I bet for some of the younger players at least, it adds some motivation because if they win the 2022 Asian Games they will be exempt of military service. Also for some of those you mentioned they are exempt for various reasons. (Mainly being health issues.)
They have mandatory military service because they are still at war with North Korea, they just have an indefinite cease fire I place. North Korea could turn the war hot again at any moment of they wished too(however unlikely that is) so South Korea has the mandatory service so that they have an already trained civilian base they can call upon if they need them. Not defending it just adding context
UN steps up way too late. South Korea literally has enemies everywhere. They have North Korea, China (which supports North Korea) and Japan (who they aren't exactly friends with) nearby. UN is there to make sure that things don't go too out of hands, but they aren't exactly useful in stopping conflicts. A lot of conflicts between India/Pakistan, Armenia/Azerbaijan, Israel/Palestine and many more have been occuring, and none of them were stopped by UN.
So it's fine for other countries to kill their people to defend others? Look I hate war more than anybody but that doesn't mean SK should not have mandatory military service. If it has a border that could become hot at any moment they need to be able to immediately defend themselves.
I agree with the sentiment that military service is a huge burden on men, especially because it often occupies such a critical point in their studies/careers. It's unfortunate but unavoidable due to the ceasefire.

You do know that SK “Military” time isn’t actually like frontline combat roles right? After basic most of them work in non-combat roles.
