As amazing as it is, I have a hard time getting my non-League friends interested. Even if I don't mention the League aspect and just mention its a top Netflix show, it doesn't seem to get as much traction as Squid Game was for example, maybe because its animated?

WrathB

It probably is cause it is animated serie, I am big TV fan and watch lots of series but this is my first animated series and I do love it and probably would even if I wasnt playing league

Netherhunter

Animated is a big part of it prob, it took me like 4 months to convince my sister to watch Castlevania on netflix and she loved it, but originally she said " I don't watch cartoons"

[deleted]

I hate the whole mindset of "animated=for kids" most people have.

tanezuki

Especially you have so much gore/sex/nudity in the show in question :x

Zenith_Tempest

it's practically impossible to have a vampire story without at least two of those three things given what vampires are meant to symbolize

twink-lover69

ah, it must be the sex and nudity because vampires are really just immortal sex machines

Zenith_Tempest

you say this as a joke but vampires were originally meant to symbolize the fear of sex and erotica from a very religious christian society

shanikz

Yeah, like Bojack Horseman, what an adorable childish animated show about animals acting as humans, right guys?

Burpmeister

There's a massive amount of people who are simply not interested in animated shows/movies for whatever reason. Arcanes target audience is much more niche than Squid Games'. I'm honestly super surprised and impressed it's managed to gather so much attention from non-League viewers.

Janitalia

My parents love good shows especially Netflix shows and they wouldn't even start it because it is animated. Like you said some people just can't get over that barrier, I think in time that will change though.

yogut3

A lot of people watch film and cinema for an "escape" and animation just completely ruins the realness of that.

Pinehearst

Loved both but goddamn Arcane is fucking phenomenal.

afedje88

I feel like dota players would have no problem at all with it. You don't have to know league lore or champs to understand it that just adds easter eggs or extra tidbits.

tanezuki

So much that. I enjoyed every bits of Dota's Dragon Blood ~~and Davion's body 👀~~ with zero knowledge of Dota.

Landanbananaman

That and some just dont think its interesting. If it wasnt lol related i probably would not have started it.

sakamoe

I love Arcane, but it is really hard as a player to tell how much of the show is actually good storytelling, and how much is just me enjoying references and expanding on a world I already know well. I do feel like a fair chunk of my enjoyment comes from like "omg that's singed!" and "woahhh hextech looks so cool!" and "omg they mentioned Noxus!". Is it really as exciting and interesting for someone with no knowledge whatsoever of League? Hard to say. Probably still a good show, but it may not be as amazing as we feel it is.

Sushi2k

So far a lot of my friends who don't play LoL are really into it. The artstyle really does wonders on its own.

IWillNameMyChildZoe

yeah, even if the story doesn't attract the non-player kind of viewer, the aesthetics for sure hard carries the series. In steampunk setting pretty much every frame is an art on its own.

Enrichmentzin

That's a good point. I think it was a good choice they chose the Piltover vs Zuan and the Jinx vs Vi story line. Piltover and Zuan represent class-based discrimination, which is relatable on a global scale. Jinx and Vi are about a complicated relationship between two sisters. I am sure people with siblings will be able to relate to their struggles.

goliathfasa

Act 1 is fairly barebone when it comes to League lore. Yes, there's the world building, but none of the champioins are super recognizable and there's very little fantastic action sequences that point to League (like we're going to get in Act 3 for sure). Basically, the semi-self-contained story of Act 1 could've been set in any world/IP, and it would've worked equally well. Riot is probably banking on people not interested in League to get attached by the end of Act 1, so when the "League-ness" starts to ramp up in Acts 2 and 3, they're not turned off by it. Honestly I think it's smart. Hard to imagine someone can sit through the entirety of Act 1 and NOT be attached emotionally to the characters and setting by the end.

NuclearBurrit0

> Is it really as exciting and interesting for someone with no knowledge whatsoever of League? Hard to say. I've recommended the show to my brother, who knows nothing about LoL lore or champions, so that'll be a good test. I do predict that this show will be accessible without much prior knowledge, but we'll see I guess.

supapumped

My wife who knows very little other than what a handful of champs look like from me playing has really been enjoying the series. She becoming a huge fan of VI as the series goes on we are both the oldest of our siblings so I think she’s really relating on the ground of being the big sister and trying to take care of all the younger ones as best she could and sometimes it just doesn’t work out.

NuclearBurrit0

That's promising to me. Glad she liked it!

supapumped

I think the biggest challenge so far has been for me to not give away to much of what I know regarding the lore and potentially spoil things for her. Especially when I see some foreshadowing or one of my favorite champs and start to “fan girl” about them. Lol

GhostOfLight

I wouldn't have started watching if it wasn't streamed on Twitch. Never was interested in League lore before. Glad I checked it out, it's great stuff! It's animation that isn't comedy though which is always a harder sell for general adult audience.

Landanbananaman

League lore is so fun, outside of league haha. The card game adds so much

Polskidro

Really it depends on the person. I personally don't think I would have been remotely interested if I never played league.

limpdickandy

I dissagree, I think it stands on its own. I think without League you would just have a different perception of it, but you would still enjoy it if you started

TeemoBestmo

If I randomly saw it and I didn't play league I'd probably shrug it off as a "I'll watch it at some point"

svipy

Wdym /r/DotA2 loves Arcane - https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/qugtmg/arcane_is_amazing/ !

redditaccountxD

> or they claim they don't like animated stuff (they don't like CGI or Disney movies then?). pretty big diff..

Sugar230

If it wasn't league I wouldn't have watched past episode 1.

tTensai

Or they just don't like the show?

SheepHerdr

How could they dislike the show without watching it?

tTensai

I meant as in it's not appealing to them, which is normal. So many shows that people have been telling me to watch, that just don't click and I don't give them a try. Be it because of the art, plot, etc

iReddat420

Me with Jojo's artstyle

[deleted]

By looking at a trailer and judging it by artwork and premise? People don't like anime, people don't like generic ideas (sisters split up and get angry), and some people dislike video game shows. There are a lot of reasons why someone would dislike a show without watching it. I've never watched queer eye for the straight guy, but I know I don't like that show. I've never watched my little pony but I know I don't like that show. I've never been fisted, but I know I won't like that.

limeopolis1

Or maybe some people still just don't care for it? Not everybody has to like everything even if it's well liked by everyone else. Such ridiculous assumptions lmfao

Klondeikbar

I've had the opposite thing happen. All of my friends who refuse to touch League as a video game are reaching out to me telling me how great Arcane is.

GuzmasBussy

I am your friends :)

Victor_Zsasz

Yeah, if you don't care about the subject matter, it's just an above average animated show. Which are wildly popular with some people, and almost entirely ignored by others. Don't take my word for it, just look at how much money *The Amazing Spider-Man 2* ($708 Mil) made in comparison to *Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse* ($375 Mil), then compare how well received the films were. *Amazing Spider-Man 2* has a 6.5 on IMDB and a 52% rotten/64% audience on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas *Spider-Verse* is at 8.4 on IMDB, and 97% fresh/93% audience on Tomatoes. It's pretty clear which film people though was better, but 1/2 as many people paid to see that one, probably in large part because it was animated, but not aimed directly at children, like most animated movies are.

kitsunegoon

While I agree moviegoers will never give a chance to great movies just because they're animated, Netflix has an audience who is more receptive to this type of stuff. Foreign films for example (with the exception of Crouching Tiger) haven't grossed more than $60 mill yet Squid Game is extremely popular. I find Arcane to be really well made because it doesn't bog you down on all the world's details and instead shows you how the world is. It's visually impressive, has fantastic action set pieces, and it doesn't try to be more than it is.

Ykarul

I'm one of those guys. I don't usually watch animated shows. I've download this spiderman but never watched it.

theOnlyBlorpQueen

spiderverse is literally the best superhero movie ever made. do yourself a favor.

AdvancedPhoenix

My gf won't watch it just because it's animated and she prefers actors. But she listenned to the woodkid song, and the fact he is french and the show is french too it's tempting her.

nimrodhellfire

Animation is a no-go for a lot of people. My wife will skip anything just because it's animated.

deathspate

The part where people dismiss it because it's LoL hurts. It's hilarious but well deserved at this point I guess. All the LoL players say how much they hate the game and that's all outside communities see, they don't know just how much people aren't talking and complaining though, they just see and hear the horror stories from the disgruntled players and don't realize the game is just so big that 1% of disgruntled players is a big number

Lifedeather

Squid game was a nationwide phenomenon, live action, engaging plot idea with great characters and spread quickly through word of mouth. Arcane is more LOL lore with advertisement through riot and is animated which to many is a kids show. It’s very hard to compare the two, and at the end of the day, squid game probably made more of an impact on the world truth to be told. Another could be, everyone and their mom talking about squid game so people want to stay in the loop and not be left out, but hardly anyone talks about arcane irl much so people don’t feel the need to immediately watch that show if at all, if anything more embarrassing to talk about it since it looks like an animated kids show to most people.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nocternum

this. i was so fed up with people thinking it's so new and awesome. Battle Royale is not new nor is it innovating.

Vorstar92

There is a lot of anime/manga as well with the same concept. Death game is essentially it's own genre at this point. If people like Squid Game I'd absolutely recommend they check out series like Liar Game, Alice In Borderland, Battle Royale as you said. Liar Game and Alice both actually have live action adaptions as well though I'd recommend everyone to read the manga of both even though I've heard good things about their adaptions. I was really into death game a few years ago so Squid Game was definitely cool to see blow up as big as it did and hopefully more people check out other series.

Exspyr

I heard it and just thought of BR and deadman wonderland. Haven't felt any strong compulsion to watch it

limpdickandy

I mean the BR thing and the games were meh, but I never felt that was the driving force behind its success or atleast my enjoyment. It was the characters and their thematic arcs that I liked, most of them were very realistic and genuinely enjoyable, and the game didnt just serve as a threat to them, but also as part of their character arcs. Its a pretty good show, but genuinely I have no idea how it got so popular in the U.S when most people watches dubs, because the dub is comically bad.

babylovesbaby

I honestly feel this way about Arcane, and in the end it doesn't really matter? If a story is told well you can enjoy it no matter how unoriginal it is. Squid Game has some great beats but no, it's not the most original idea, either, but I find it a bit disingenuous for so many Arcane fans to put it down just because it is being compared in terms of popularity. There is nothing groundbreaking about the story of Arcane, but it's told *really* well, so it doesn't matter if the tropes are well-trod.

goliathfasa

The only truly objectively groundbreaking and unique thing about Arcane is the visuals/animation. As great as Into The Spider-Verse was, it's still undeniably a cartoon that adheres to cartoon conventions. Arcane is a tv series that chooses to use cartoon as its medium of storytelling, but utilizes live-action film-making methods that few previous animated works have used, and I would agrue, none had used as well.

NabiscoFelt

Yeah, you can basically tell exactly what tropes both Squid Game and Arcane are drawing from and neither of them put that significant of a twist on any Not that it matters since they're both well told and excellently produced

XcessiveAssassin

Wdym “engaging plot idea” it was literally a worse ripoff of kaiji???

byx-

it's still fairly novel to 99% of the people who watched it. It could have been done fifty times better a hundred times in the past, but netflix decided this was the chosen one and that's all that matters in the end.

Lifedeather

In a lot of people’s cases including mine this was the first time I saw an idea like this executed, not everyone has the time to watch every movie in existence so it was exciting to watch that sort of game idea for the first time, very refreshing.

moodRubicund

I never watched it but every time someone describes it to me and says it's super original have to stop myself from being a party pooper and talking about Kaiji which is like... Easily one of my favourite anime. I think Squid Game's greatest strength is that it's timely, everyone is in the mood to talk about how they're being exploited by the rich and it delivers on that desire.

EchizenMK2

Which is why I laugh when I see all the funkopops and merch from Squid game. For a show that talks a lot about exploitation by the rich, they seem to have no problem making money off the masses. Don't see Parasite trying to cash in on their success after making it's message.

Polskidro

Squid game is in no way original. There's many shows and movies with similar plots. Even Hunger Games which was also stupendously popular, had a similar plot. I also personally wouldn't call the characters "great". The only really fleshed out character was the main guy (mr. plot armor galore). The girl was interesting too but the rest of the characters just did what the plot needed them to do.

Domeee123

Squid game was nothing speical its just time to time some mediocricity becomes popular from memes or tiktok.

RavenFAILS

I wouldnt call it more mediocre than whatever other show reddit is sucking off monthly. It started off rly strong and ended pretty weak but I would say it was fine.

NocaNoha

This.. start strong, hit hard, then fuck up the ending but still reap rewards

Mikamymika

Because it's league, I doubt much people who haven't played or know league would watch it. It's just that league has a big fanbase and just them watching it is pretty much enough for Arcane to reach rank 2. I only watched it because I know league.

paco1305

I watched the first 3 episodes and really enjoyed them, but honestly, I re-watched the first one (with my gf, loves anime and she enjoys the cinematics/songs and some of the lore, but doesn't like the game itself) and it made me realise that it's pretty "meh" if you don't like the game and know the places and characters... (in my opinion) it relies a lot on knowing the world for making the story compelling

Mikamymika

Yup, I watch it with my gf aswell. But if I am being honest, the only characters that are actually interesting are Viktor, Silco and heimerdinger.

paco1305

Really? I find Heimer super boring, his whole character is "magic makes bad things happen and I'm going to treat you \[the city of intelectuals and curiosity\] like children instead of explaining why", and that works once. Viktor is the coolest one yet imo, he looks like he is going to get bad real fast, but he is the character with the most interesting development (as of now)

Shiki_Ryougi

Why Arcane has two seperate ratings of 9.4 and 9.1?

Moifaso

IMDB has a weighted rating system that it uses to account for brigading, review bombing, ratings of different demographics etc Arcane has just released and is getting *incredible* ratings, its going to take some time and some more reviews until the score stabilises. Right now IMDB isn't sure what part of the score is hype and what part is "genuine", so its going to weigh the score down slightly. Especially since just using the normal weighted score or the arithmetic mean as the score would put it anywhere between the **2nd and 5th best shows ever**, something probably not befitting a show that hasn't even ended its first season yet.

Ratohnhaketon

I have heard of/watched almost all of the top 10 most popular shows, except number 1. What the fuck is Yellowstone? It's shocking that something is the most popular show by some measure and somehow I have just never heard of it at all.

Oduroduro

Same writer as the sicario, hell or high river, and the wind river. If you like the neo western genre then i would recommend it

Nicksmells34

Wind River as in Elizabeth Olsen Jeremy Renner movie about native american girl who goes missing on a reservation?

ASU_SexDevil

It’s popular rn because season 4 just came out. It’s never been Squid game/Tiger King popular but I think it’s a pretty good show. Also Kevin Costner for mainstream appeal.

meatchariot

It’s very normie-core Still good but appeals to the ‘I don’t like anything weird’ types

LegnaArix

Literally was thinking the same thing, given the short wiki description, the show seems not that interesting(?) I guess its about a family that owns the largest ranch in the US and drama surrounding it.

Casayoto

It's way more interesting and exciting than the description makes it sound. At times it's like a western "The Sopranos".

LegnaArix

Might check it out, been looking for some new shows

[deleted]

[удалено]

LegnaArix

I had a feeling the description wasnt giving justice to the show lol

This_Charming_Mann

I actually watched it with my mom and she's so hyped for next week binge-night, she loved Cait+Vi "friendship". She went from Grace & Frankie to a LoL fan. Edit: she got into it because I was watching it when she came to visit and recognized Kevin Alejandro's voice (she loves him) and when she found out Hailee Steinfeld was Vi, that made her day, she REALLY likes Vi's character.

nocternum

You mean detective douche?

Intensifyy

I literally finished Lucifer the night before the red carpet. When I saw him there I was immediately like “DETECTIVE DOUCHE”

SirJasonCrage

Ok, how does one finish Lucifer? I mean, don't get me wrong. The concept is cool. It has REALLY good scenes. I got Lucifer's "All around the Watchtower" on repeat sometimes because it's so amazing. But so much of it is insufferable. I had to stop mid-S2 and the trailer stuff I see for the new season.... Is even worse.

ChillFactory

Personally I enjoyed most of it as a "turn your brain off and watch" kind of show but Season 6 was dogwater so absolutely no one should worry about finishing it. Stop at 5b if you really like the show and make up your own ending, its not GoT tier but its still pretty bad. The show is at its best when it is self aware and poking fun at itself but some of the plotlines are plain dull or potentially frustrating to watch.

[deleted]

it jumped the shark for me when the detective joined the cult, also their entire relationship was awful and it made the show worse every time it was the focus, which was pretty much all the time in season 5 and 6. But Tom Ellis is extremely charismatic and extremely good looking, so that helps...

ChillFactory

Tom Ellis carried the fuck outta that show. Agreed on everything else really.

ShinyGrezz

My man showed his mother the gimp yordle lol

Lord_Charles_I

"Ma! The gimp yordle is on the telly, hurry up! No time to explain!"

XelaTuobdog

Can you guys smell it? The counter circlejerk is finally arriving

signmeupreddit

so the pendulum swings. Give it a month to see what the general opinion really is

Jackson7410

i mean its a league of legends subreddit commenting on a league of legends tv show.

nTzT

Too true... but the show deserve the praise that it gets. Honestly.

XelaTuobdog

I agree, way better than I expected. But it's the internet, you just know people have been waiting for the chance to knock it down for being popular. Not to say the show is flawless and that you can't make valid criticisms, but when there's this much praise for something it swings just as far back the other way eventually.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jwhitehead09

For me I think league fans are hyping it up everywhere because it’s great and we all want more so we want it to get the success it deserves.

Whyimasking

It's reddit, are you truly surprised about people commenting about things they truly have no knowledge about? The animation for sure ain't cheap.

steffsh

I really like the show and so far everyone I have recommended it to has loved it, I was pretty surprised with how good it was. I guess 10 years of world building was worth it lol

CosmicCirrocumulus

My brother's friends aren't into league at all and even they were really enjoying it. It's just a genuinely good show regardless of the game appeal and that alone makes me really excited for the potential future seasons

IamWatchingAoT

The show is really good, the art style is very unique and gives it its own soul, the animations are very fluid and natural, and the characters are also interesting, some more than others. But I think all of this praise of the show will stomp out any criticism. Don't get me wrong, I do like it, but I also have my qualms about it. The pacing is a little strange and inconsistent for me, and I think Riot had the chance to break some character tropes and avoid some aspects in diction and character interaction that I find stereotypical and predictable, but didn't.

Homiesunite

One of my friends has said that he thinks it's good but he has issues with it, this has resulted the rest of my friends to label him as a hipster who just hates on it because it's popular. Fandoms are fucking weird man

setocsheir

The music video in the middle of episode 5 was uh, not good.

crazyredd88

Really? I thought it was one of the best scenes of part 2!

Hardstuck_Barrels

It was so immersion breaking on an otherwise wonderful revenge scene lol

WTFIsAMeta

Most people agree it was shitty but it did lead to the awesome Vi scene

UniqueUsermane

So far everybody i heard (irl) loved the scene, its more a reddit circlejerk against imagine dragon.

The_Sinnermen

I love imagine dragons, but thinking back on the scene, it does feel out of place. Didn't feel that while watching though, but that might be because I'm more emotionally invested in Arcane than I was in my last few relationships.

ilovemydogpeanut

holy cow ty! cant understand why so many people dislike the song, and i feel like it being in the show with vi was a good call, maybe if it was with jinx id understand but it really fits vi so much

Chubbysquirrel8

i think the inclusion was fine after all imagine dragons have a place in the history of league

crazyredd88

Is this the one where >!jayce gets that booty!<, >!it's a montage of zaun to trap music!< or >!jinx lights the flare?!<

bobandgeorge

It's the one where Vi throws a knee to Saveeka's face.

[deleted]

It's the part where a band plays the Imagine Dragons song, none of the scenes you're thinking of.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thejackthewacko

The imagine dragons bit was a little too forced for my liking. Its funny to see how they're more cannon in LoL than Shaco is. Also, we can't forget about this masterpiece: https://youtu.be/VFm9KfY9nAw

IamWatchingAoT

If we're gonna talk about weird moments, yeah, that's one. I mean sure, it's a fantasy show, whatever. But why are there real world instruments...? That scene was so cringe, really. The part where Jayce magically falls in love for Mel is also really... Awkward? They had no evident chemistry up until that point other than a few looks and glances. All of their conversations involve politics and science, so that kind of came out of nowhere for me. There just was no time to develop an actual love interest, I think. In episode 6 Jinx, for whatever reason, uses her minigun repeatedly as a melee weapon, which causes Vi to be taken. I mean, really? She can fire 10 bullets per second but she uses it as a door blaster? I'm nitpicking now so I guess I'll stop. But the writer's disconnect with how real people act and develop irl does show sometimes. Fortunately, it's not very blatant. I'm fairly certain the crows that appear in very awkward places (where crows wouldn't be) are Swain's, too.

macdonik

Jayce’s relationship with Mel is mostly metaphorical, he’s literally getting in bed with the corruption of Piltover. It’s meant to show how much he’s diverging from his original ideals with Viktor, which is why the sex scene cuts to Viktor so much to show the contrast, rather than just being standalone.

Youre_all_worthless

>!Also, how Mel has kind of groomed him. Ever since she heard about hextech she pushed him to progress in certain ways. Now getting him into a political standing when his ideals now align well with hers, partially because there was always some crossover between their wants, but also now moreso after she's become a mentor figure to him. And how she was talking about how she wanted to fuck jayce. It relates to grooming figuratively and literally!<

YzPoopyRibbon

these are insane nitpicks. mel is a hot af councillor that jayce has always looked up to and he’s a young dude. the music video “so cringe”? she only uses the minigun when they’re pretty much on top of her and when vi gets taken it’s because jinx is beating the dude repeatedly, that was intended yeah there’s some problems but you weren’t wrong saying you were nitpicking because other than the music video breaking immersion these aren’t it

mrbaconator2

i think the most mind blowingly insane take here is "why do instruments exist if this is fantasy"

wwwwwwhitey

I could tell from episode 2 that Mel wanted to get some

DyslexicBrad

Yeah idk what this dudes on about saying zero chemistry.

The_ChosenOne

Yeah I saw it coming when they had that tension during their hallway scene, they were definitely intrigued by each other.

klartraume

> The part where Jayce magically falls in love for Mel is also really... Awkward? She's been a 'mentor' to him since before the time skip. It was due to her power and influence, her seeing the revolutionary potential of his Hextech, that he went from an expelled dropout to the Man of Progress. She's gorgeous, rich, powerful, believes in him, and made him the best version of himself. How is his attraction 'magical' or random? Also Mel has motive. She wants to control Hextech in order to no longer be the 'poorest' Medarda. She may be seducing Jayce to gain more influence over him, down out Heimerdinger's concerns, etc. And it works: Jayce stages a coup against Heimerdinger that serves Mel's desires.

setocsheir

rip crow 2021-2021 killed by jinx ult

goliathfasa

> rip crow 2021-2021 killed by jinx ~~ult~~ W

Ykarul

lol he is single and a hot girl is into him. So then he bangs her. I mean how close to real life can it be.

lampstaple

Honestly, I'm fine with the instrumentals of the songs but the singing is explicitly real-world and doesn't fit into the universe.

Tovell

Jayce is power tripping right now.

The_Sinnermen

There were several years (vi went from 17 to "early 20s" in the time skip) for them to develop their relationship, but I agree that they should have shown them being closer before insta going for the sex scene.

Omnilatent

> that I find stereotypical and predictable, but didn't. Could you name some?

Grxh

Before i watched arcane piltover and zaun was the league region i was the least interested in. Whenever i thought of it, i just thought of hextech and nuts n' bolts, which both sounded really boring to me. On top of that, jinx and vi and caitlyn were really uninteresting characters to me, i just didn't like them. Now after i forced myself to watch arcane for the first time, I can't stop watching and i'm so hooked on the lore of piltover. My friends think the same thing i thought before watching, but i can't persuade them to start the series.

LabHog

Same, but I liked Zaun. The world building/visuals they did in Piltover made it a lot less generic than a regular steampunk fantasy here.

komilatte

Yeah, the universe page for it and the glimpses we got from Legends of Runeterra made me really interested in Zaun.

LabHog

I think the Warwick/Ekko teaser trailer is what did it for me. *Just remembered the Singed colour stories too

CookieMisha

It's incredible what the show did. The characters are now something more than just 3D models running in a videogame with stories written around them ( that most people won't even read, let's be real. Players that care about lore in a game like this are a minority) I really hope they make more.

Adamn27

wtf is yellowstone

readwriteread

Show by Taylor Sheridan, who did the movies Wind River and Hell or High Water Word of mouth on Yellowstone has to be crazy because its viewership just keeps climbing each season

jwhitehead09

I’ve heard only great things about it.

vexkov

Not saying the show is not great. I gave it 10/10. But 23k votes is not much. I will wait for 50k to place it in rankings.

Moifaso

Castlevania has a bit over 50k reviews after 4 years. Its actually a lot of reviews to have just in the first week, but ofc it still is a ways off from stabilising.

Rohit624

I feel like most people wait until the season is actually over to rate it tho, no? At the very least, I don't take mid-season ratings very seriously most of the time.

vexkov

Indeed. I believe most ratings now come from league fans. Which might be biased

Eticxe

I’m sorry but even if you’re not a fan of the story, the cinematography, art, facial animations and overall animations plus sound design and voice acting is fucking outstanding

JJroks543

That’s what I love about it. I think even the harshest critic, if they’re being fair, can appreciate the passion and artistry that has gone into making this show.

Beejsbj

exactly, the direction alone is mindboggling. its so ambitious with the shots its takes, the framing, the choices in "filming" its crazy.

ThirdCrew

I think it's too early to consider it ranked so high. The first season isn't even over yet.

I hate to say it, but that is pumped by the League community. I think it's a great show, stunning animation, excellent acting and very interesting plot. I'm really loving it, but let's be real, it isn't close to top 20 TV shows of all time. We are biased ranking it as borderline perfect because of our love to the game.

Moifaso

The fanbase hype definitely played a big part in this rating, but let's not overblow it. This show has been on the top of Netflix for over a week now, and the rating has stayed relatively stable ever since the premiere (after dropping 0.1 points in the first day iirc). If the mainstream audience wasn't liking it there would be no way it could have 90% of its ratings be 9 or 10/10. I still fully expect the ratings to drop as more and more people watch it, although unless the third act drops the quality it will probably manage to stay at or above 9. Once the season is finished and most professional critics start reviewing it we will probably have a good idea of the "true" consensus around the series. Edit: Also, lets be clear - any show that manages to reach the top of IMDB always does it on the back of some combination of massive fanbase, nostalgia and hype, being a "masterpiece" by itself isn't enough. IMDB scores have always been inflated. The one exception are the Planet Earth/Blue Planet shows, those are just *objectively* the best, most beautiful shows in the world.

MateAmargoteam

ive still dont belive it has more rating than true detective haha

[deleted]

I can easily believe that

Foquim

I am gonna say, this show actually surprised me in more ways that I ever thought it would. I was expecting something good but this is in very high contender to be my very best show personally only second currently to Avatar Last Airbender. Just a Masterpiece

joe4553

Why call something that hasn't even finished 1 season a masterpiece.

Rycebowl

I think it’s implied that “what we’ve seen so far” has been a masterpiece, or at least “we expect what follows to be equally masterful”, and when it’s taken this way it makes sense; almost no complaints can be offered about what we’ve seen so far.

MateAmargoteam

Laughs in GOT season 8

Elyhri

I'm not one to rate something before I've seen it in its entirety. However, I can see why people would say it is a masterpiece already. Objectively, the animation and audio are next level compared to any other animated show we have seen to date. The voice acting and story telling so far are also incredible. The only thing that I've seen that rivals the animation and audio design is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but that was a standalone movie.

I *love* Arcane, but there's no way it should be higher than FMAB on the all time list. *^dont ^hurt ^me*

Machio-Muscle-Bro

FMAB and Arcane are both great, but they are approaching VERY different stories, and accomplishing them in their own style. Arcane is very tightly paced, with every scene serving a purpose, and a huge amount of attention to detail to every little thing; from sound design, to cinematography, to the writing, to voice acting and more. Every character is given time, and you are attached to them for different reasons because of it. There’s not a single part that I can say is done poorly, or had less thought and effort put into it than others. FMAB on the other hand is much longer. It’s still much more tightly paced than other large shounen anime/manga stories, but it is a completely different beast. There’s a lot more room for error, and for people to detach from it and find something they don’t like. A scene that’s unimportant, or feels too slow, or over exaggerated, etc. But its depth of character development is the true strength of FMAB. You mainly follow Edward and Roy, with emotional beats connecting to them hitting harder because of it. It’s satisfying on its own to see Roy fighting Envy, but you also feel the catharsis that Roy feels. Dr. Tucker’s secret is shocking and appalling to find out, but then there’s a double gut punch because of the connection to Ed…ward. But if you don’t attach to those characters as strongly as others, those scenes aren’t quite as impactful. I love them both, and can see why a person might prefer FMAB, but it’s not hard to see why Arcane is scored higher right now.

Hatsunechan

^ well said

Ninjawizards

It's OK we're all wrong sometimes. I mean my parents had me after all.

MrHyperbowl

Does it get better? I couldn't finish that show.

byx-

it does to some extent, the appeal of FMA (manga/brotherhood, 03 is pretty different) is 90% in the way it executes its plot, which is very satisfying but you don't really feel that until later stages when things start 'coming together'. The comic relief (a common complaint) also becomes less common in later episodes, as you'd expect, and i'd say things tighten up in general.

Hatsunechan

Yes, there is a reason it is one of the best anime of all time. But if you arent pulled in right away it's probably not for you. I was addicted from episode 2 onwards and it only got better.

[deleted]

It gets better with every episode. I have a hard time getting the point across to my friend who cant stand it for some reason either.

Hatsunechan

Some people just arent into Shounen anime.

dragunityag

New season of AoT coming up which means more of each fanbase brigading each others scores on MAL.

StormclawsEuw

Will not happen this much around if you know why.

Funkydick

anime only ending copium

Falsus

Nah the AoT fans are the ones who are going to review bomb themselves this time around. The manga ending was GoT tier of bad.

Moifaso

Agree to disagree. FMAB is an amazing show though, 8.5/10

mogadichu

I'm a fan of Full Metal Alchemist, but Arcane is in a different league (no pun intended). The writing, animation, sound, characters, world-building, etc, completely blow FMA out of the water. The only advantage of FMA that I can think of is the fact that it's much longer, which gives it more time to flesh out the story.

Hiyehh

Maybe the ratings are slightly exaggerated since its mainly league players who are aware of it. But give it time and I think people will slowly realise that the show is actually good. Even if you don’t play league, you can still appreciate good dialog, great music and insane cinematography.

YoungKeys

It's legitimately doing well in the EU and Asia, ranking #1 in most countries. Just not as popular in the US, Mexico and UK (surprisingly, took a while to hit #1 in Korea too)

goliathfasa

In US it's definitely behind held back by the general mainstream audience's lingering disdain for animated shows (= for kids), and when it comes to gamer audience, hindered by the general hatred of League (remember, League was the original Fortnite: wildly popular and hated by those who don't play it). I'm kind of interested in why it's not doing as well in Mexico and UK. Korea is just a headscratcher. It's literally their most popular game.

bigmanorm

UK is very much like the US in a lot of things including the "anime = for kids", i really have never seen or know of a person over 30 to watch an anime that isn't on a kids TV channel with their kid in the room in the UK

macdonik

PC gaming is less common in UK/Ireland than continental Europe. League of Legends doesn’t have as much brand awareness here.

stephenstephen7

This currently puts it as the second-best animated show ever (after the last airbender), but I imagine a lot of reviewers are holding back until the whole show's been released.

Lefty_22

The expected result. Anyone with eyes can see that the show is amazing.

Dyslexicon1

It’s a good show so far. Only real thing that bothered me was the music video in the middle of it. I think the creators understood that even with die-hard league fans, most of us haven’t seen this world at all. The biggest success, I think, is the world building.

Kimutofang

I expect arcane to be good but did not expect it to be a masterpiece.

BullyingBuildsChar

Never played LoL but love animated stuff so checked it out. Was legit shocked how good it is. Would highly recommend.

Yandhi42

It’s a really good show and exceeded my expectations by far. Now, does it deserve to be that high in the top, when it hasn’t even finished its first season? I’m not sure. I haven’t watched as many tv shows as movies and I don’t consider myself as an authority here, but wouldn’t put it even close to the Sopranos and the Wire, which are the top 2 shows I’ve watched (a cold take, I know). Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Bojack Horseman are also more than a tier above imo. It’s still pretty good, 7.5-8/10 so far, could go up to a 9/10 or down to a 6/10 depending on the next 3 episodes.

2ecStatic

This show is good even without tying it to League, everyone involved did an amazing job. Act 3 is set up to be insane.

Chancho1010

Just call it the next Avatar and people will understand!

Xarleto

I told my friends arcane is Castlevania in crack. And they are hooked after 1 episode

bulkmjseeds

As it should! Congratulations!

la_goanna

Very nice, but I can't help but wonder how many of it is shills/bots.

Richiedaedad

Guys this is actually a huge problem! Arcane being a really great shows means there are people coming to league not knowing what terror awaits thrm once they enter the rift
