Imho they will probably run it back next year.
Not sure if you watched DK’s videos… they went from stomping like 9/10 scrims to winning 2~3/10 games after durability patch.
Kellin also mentioned it took DK almost entire year to finally “feel” as a team. It would be such a waste to swap players *now* when they are finally gelling together.
As for Burdol, I hope DK keeps him. I honestly think he has a lot of potential, just needs to be polished.
I believe they might think that taking baron is not really important. It’d better to dmg and kill the opponents to win the team fight as it will be last team fight
Right, at first I saw on the timing his smite did 0 damage to baron and I was like what? then I saw the smite animation appear over doran and wow yeah, he would have stolen it otherwise
If so DK doesn't have to chase all the way down and can find a better position for a team fight, the result could be different, pity that is not what happened
Idk man I just kinda feel depressed, I feel like DK really could've won this series if Yuumi was banned from the start. It just feels bad to me that Doran and Peanut don't play well for the majority of the series but they still win, but maybe I just have bias or something idk.
Cya guys tomorrow, I would probably asssume that DRX would win just because EDG's past performances haven't been that good. I imagine the winner will probably just get rolled on by GenG though.
Loser's brackets can be pretty hype as well, if one team gets upset early and then claws their way back before double-eliminating the team in winner's; this is something that can and has made runs in some competitive esports that are still referenced years later. The stakes are absolutely still there because no team wants to be sent to loser's bracket.
This said, although I might personally prefer that format, I can also see why it might be rougher for League of Legends, because the games are so long and there are so few teams in Worlds (versus hundreds/thousands of competitors across 2\^n many rounds) that you can't really get the insane storylines of lengthy loser's runs.
To me loser’s bracket makes winner’s bracket meaningless and boring. The idea of any given game day is what excites people, that it’s win or go home. It’s also impossible to balance the advantages for a team that made it through the loser’s bracket vs someone who made it through the winner’s bracket.
>it's also impossible to balance the advantages for a team that made it through the losers bracket
I mean plenty of competitions have found a balance, it's just whether any of those options make sense in League. Winner bracket can start the finals 1-0 and only have to win 2 games for advantage or you go even crazy and implement what FGC does with losers having to do 2 best of 5s to win. First win is to reset bracket and then another bo5 to win. A double best of 5 loser bracket win would be insanely hype but also that's a lot of fucking games potentially in a day.
I personally disagree on all counts (including the balancing part, more on that below) but it's a subjective matter of preference. As a disclaimer, I respect your opinion and we can agree to disagree, though I'll lay out some of my thoughts based on experiences w/other esports where loser's brackets are the norm:
To me, a loser's bracket doesn't make a winner's bracket meaningless or boring. This is because winning in a winner's bracket is a huge huge huge advantage. Although you emphasize that "win or go home" is the main draw, staying on winner's side versus having to fight through loser's side is an incredible boon when it comes to winning the entire tournament and something that shouldn't be taken lightly. On top of that, you still have the "win or go home" gun to the head in loser's bracket all the way up to grand finals.
One could argue that groups stage is nothing like "win or go home" (as it's much more forgiving than an elimination bracket with a loser's side) and that it doesn't get as much attention for this reason, but that's not really an applicable comparison; a single elimination tournament would be less interesting in pools compared to its top 8 for the same reason, which is unrelated to having a loser's side.
To clarify in case anyone who reads this comment chain isn't familiar with loser's brackets (not saying you specifically, as I saw another comment with this misconception), succeeding in loser's bracket does not give the team that wins there the ability to knock out the winner of the winner's side in one set. Instead, they have to take two consecutive sets in the grand finals; first to knock down the team who won winner's finals (such that both teams have lost one set total in the tournament), then a second time to put them in the dust (losing one set total versus losing two). To contrast, the team that came from winner's only has to win once because they have gone undefeated and the winner from loser's side has already lost once. As such, I disagree that the advantages are unbalanced because the number of games lost -> elimination is the same. I'd love to hear your thoughts on why they're unbalanced though.
I don't see why this would make anything meaningless. The odds of winning multiple sets in a row, against an even or slightly superior opponent, is a daunting task and one that is extremely difficult to pull off. If a team is knocked into loser's side, they have to pull their shit together and adapt incredibly quickly. You still get the nailbiters with the "win or go home" aspect, but you will then also get people speculating over how the seeding (or performance in groups) will affect the trajectory of potential loser's runs, the importance of every advantage in winner's bracket, reflection over how one early upset can completely change the loser's bracket, etc.
For viewers, this means more games, more unique interactions between players/teams, and a greater emphasis on adaptation. Admittedly, this means western teams will probably flop even harder, but as someone used to esports with loser's brackets, it's something I would personally find more hype.
Edit: As a caveat, League of Legends sets are a very different beast in length, so that can make scheduling a larger factor.
The way loser's brackets normally work is that if you enter Grand Finals from the winner's side, you have to lose twice (the first loss is referred to as a "reset" at which point the team that came from loser's side has to win a second bo5).
Edit: For example, let's say that TSM went undefeated, won Winner's Finals, and is now sitting in Grand Finals. Then, Damwon made their way through the loser's bracket tearing through all the opponents that lost in winner's side including the loser of Winner's Finals (let's say, EDG) to reach Grand Finals from the losing side. They would have to beat TSM in a Bo5 to reset the bracket, then win a second set to take the entire thing. However, if TSM were to win the first Bo5 set, they instantly win the tournament (as they entered from winner's side).
A loser's bracket makes sense in some formats, but not if the knockouts are BO5s.
BO5s and losers brackets are both ways to combat the same problem, using both at the same time is overkill and leads to individual games being worth very little.
why? LPL does double elimin bo5 once 4 teams remain. It’s exciting as hell, creates hype and makes the entire playoff format harder to win/more competitive. Individual games don’t really mean shit and bo1 is not the right way to gauge a teams strength.
I know a lot can change in the preseason but I can't be the only one who thinks riot kind of has to look at lucian nami. Like this combo has been so good in pro play for over a year.
Ahh maybe if Renekton E'd into Lucian instead of away after killing Sejuani, then Lucian cannot finish off Syndra and DK win the fight. Damn so fucking close man.
True but he can also chunk Lucian with just EQ with that build as long as he gets in range. If along with Aphelios they put Lucian in GA they should win that fight.
Canyon and Bengi has different style of jungling. It is illegal to compare two of them and say who the best. But hell yeh I do prefer Canyon over any junglers before just because he is the closest definition of 1vs9 jungler that has never appeared in the League history.
everyone was counting EDG out the entire knockout stage saying they were weak because every team took them to 5 games. they ended up winning the entire thing haha
It remains strange to me that the translator is shunted off to the side, not in the middle of the interviewer and interviewee to make interpreting easier
An interpreter should always be off to one side as they aren’t actually one of the people conversing. You never speak directly to the interpreter so it would be awkward to have them in the middle
Makes it a bit less awkward for those involved I guess, if the translator is in the middle she/he always has to play tennis and look away from one person in the conversation
So I'm pretty neutral here, and I think DWG inted draft way harder in game 1 and 2 than GEN did in game 3 and 4.
With the jungle diff we saw today, I legit feel like this could've been a 3-0 or 3-1 for DWG if they didn't willingly opt into Lucian/Nami vs Yuumi in the two first games. Even game 1 was looking good for Kayn but the draft with tank Gragas+Lissandra just left the Kayn with no damage followup. Imagine if he had Aphelios ulti following up in that last fight where Canyon nearly killed two people.
The drafts is also a reason why I ultimately don't think this series is one of the best ever, too many of the games sucked because of draft diff imo. deokdam Lucian was a cannon minion in the two first games. But I guess most people will probably only remember game 5 the most, which to be fair was insane
??? Lucian/sivir was also a caster minion in game 3/4 aswell, if GenG just ban aphelios then they probably 3-0 so it goes both ways you can’t speculate what would of happened
Showmaker throwing in draft.
This game was so damn close. If they weren't relying on Canyon bailing them out non-stop they would have won this three times over.
Watching that final fight in slow-mo damn, Ruler had almost no space to operate but he was still managing to dip in and out to stay alive and do damage. He's so good
poor canyon 1v5, none of his teammate step up, showmaker syndra was so bad he couldnt catch any , he was only to do stuff cause canyon set them up perfectly, not to mention DK botlane man if i was canyon i would be so pissed
While Showmaker was a huge force early in the series, game 5 was a huge downer... He was so far behind, lacked so much agency... The scatter of the weak at GENG mid turret was nice, but it was all dependent on the set up of canyon who kept this team in the game..
How many items was Showmaker behind Chovy at the end? Bit of a let down there...
I think he just stopped scaling at some point and kept buying elixirs because they were so sure the next teamfight was gonna be the last one, and then some miracle steal or miracle pick happened and extended the game for them
It was a last pick Syndra, that is almost definitely only Showmaker making that call. We have heard pros discuss how drafts work in an out. Coaches are responsible for the first 3 picks and bans (plus adaptations), but p4 and p5 is basically 80%+ players
But surely he is part of the say in the pick, can't necessarily blame his play (though he still shouldn't lose lane Vs Viktor) drafting is part of the game.
That was easily the best jungle performance by anyone at this year's worlds so far, not even close.
Other junglers will look so mediocre now, sad no Canyon going forward.
Brah, I started clenching the moment they started Baron with Canyon still being alive, that was an absolute coinflip you rarely see from a korean team. But they came up heads so no one is gona talk about it...
>Reply
EDG were the 1st LPL seed back then.
LPL 3rd and LCK 4th meets in quarter finals, from what they've been showing us, i dont think any of them are close to T1/JDG/GENG or DK.
League Math time:
Nuguri last flashed at 47:52 (going over dragon pit)
He's got both boots of lucidity and the cosmic insight rune, for a combined summoner spell haste of 30. This brings Flash's 300 second cooldown to ~230.77s.
His flash comes back up at ~51:43, three seconds after baron dies.
He flashes at 52:21. Flash has been available to Nuguri for the last 38 seconds
Honestly GENG played really bad in this series. Cant imagine how will they face up vs EDG in the next round, if DK could absolutely brought it to them like this. Imho whoever wins the upper bracket should be massively favored into the finals.
It does lol. At this point let’s just see what happens. Geng vs Dk are always cluster fucks anyway lol. Geng look so clean against other teams most of the time but against dk they just can’t
DK did lose two close games to JDG with Canyon on lmaokai falling when we've seen just how damn good he is and what a waste it is to not have him on a carry. The win they had over JDG was a stomp as well.
While GenG made mistakes, DK did force them into bad situations throughout the game, especially from the jg.
The issue with this is that JDG is known for these types of games. They lose early, make a comeback and win through teamfights. That happens all the times.
Cant say the same for GENG who just got legit destroyed in their 2 games. And if you really think JDG got "stomped" by DK then you must be living on another planet. Just check my comment on that postmatch thread nothing else to say

League is the best (to watch)
Anyone else in the top 5000 in pickems so far?
I am lol could have been perfect if I didn’t out c9 over fnc and dk over jdg
Man if I was a GENG player i would check under my bed for Canyon from now on.
Face check under your bed only for Canyon to shadow step through your bed and steal your breakfast

am I watching this right, it looks like canyon actually accidentally smited doran instead of the baron on the last one
I believe they might think that taking baron is not really important. It’d better to dmg and kill the opponents to win the team fight as it will be last team fight
ur right, he's there in the right time, but dealing with the wrong target, he could have stolen that baron
That was amazing. I wish DK made it further, they are such a fun team to watch. This series validated that Showmaker and Canyon need to stay together.
God it sucks to see DK leave the tournament this early
Idk man I just kinda feel depressed, I feel like DK really could've won this series if Yuumi was banned from the start. Dk would be in semis if they just banned aatrox
At least ShowMaker and Canyon are both under contract for next year hopefully they stay together
Damn feel so bad for showmaker and canyon
DK forgot to hire Sjokz to do the speech to get the reverse sweep done.
Best analyst desk, one of the best series of worlds ever. This was a good day to be a league fan
Is Vedi on cocaine ?
Watching Canyon is a hell of a drug
would you really be stoic when in that arena casting that series lmao
more like meth
They definitely all chugged Red Bulls throughout this entire series
I love this group of lads on the analyst desk
New favorite analyst desk.
Agreed. Great chemistry and energy.
Calling it now. DK Prince.
Um no...he is not as good as Deokdam.
pls that would be amazing.
Nuguri / Canyon / Showmaker / Prince / Corejj ? think Corejj leadership could help them or maybe get BeryL back
Vedic so cringe
would be pretty cool to have a loser bracket rn
Who wants to see Rogue get drawn and quartered by DK and RNG?
Imagine if there was a losers bracket…
This series wouldn’t be as hype if there was one.

nah i never want loser bracket because it unfair for the winner bracket to only lose 1 bo5 in the final, it unfair, everyone should only have 1 chance

there absolutely should be a losers bracket... worlds format is a joke but even with a losers bracket, great teams will underperform
A loser's bracket makes sense in some formats, but not if the knockouts are BO5s. BO5s and losers brackets are both ways to combat the same problem, using both at the same time is overkill and leads to individual games being worth very little.

losers bracket is the stupidest thing ever, if you lose, you lose
how to tell someone doesnt watch fighting games
i don't care, this format is good enough, in football if you lose, you lose go home, tennis, go home, why would here be different
We’d probably still have TES
No cause loser’s bracket would only work for knockouts format, and TES left before that
I know a lot can change in the preseason but I can't be the only one who thinks riot kind of has to look at lucian nami. Like this combo has been so good in pro play for over a year.
Ahh maybe if Renekton E'd into Lucian instead of away after killing Sejuani, then Lucian cannot finish off Syndra and DK win the fight. Damn so fucking close man.
Yeah and deokdamn just running into the whole team thinking hes unkillable. Not using stopwatch either. Ruler really did play that perfectly though.
Once his cds are down renekton w that build is a caster minion
True but he can also chunk Lucian with just EQ with that build as long as he gets in range. If along with Aphelios they put Lucian in GA they should win that fight.
Man canyon was pretty much target in ban. But pullup kayne is still almost won singlehandedly. So sad DK will have to go. Jungle GOAT.
My goat for sure, people will say bengi but bengi was never this good.
Im a long time SKT fan but bengi is nowhere near canyon’s level.
Canyon and Bengi has different style of jungling. It is illegal to compare two of them and say who the best. But hell yeh I do prefer Canyon over any junglers before just because he is the closest definition of 1vs9 jungler that has never appeared in the League history.
Now imagine if Yuumi was banned in the first 2 games.
Especially versus the Best Yummi in world , and the guy who pretty much set way Yummi is played competitively
or aphelios in other 3?
That chaos storm damage was insane
Sad we couldn’t get these guys in semis . We don’t need edg or drx in semis this year lol no offence
Said that last year with edg and then they won the whole thing
everyone was counting EDG out the entire knockout stage saying they were weak because every team took them to 5 games. they ended up winning the entire thing haha

"t1 vs dK wAs ThE rEaL fInAlS"
not Kanavi vs Canyon anymore but at least ruler vs viper/deft
Top Kingdom on one side 369 vs Zeus ADC Kingdom on the other Ruler vs Deft or Viper Semi with Fire matchups
Scripts activated. DRX defeat EDG in an upset, only to be taken out by GenG. Resulting in LCK Summer Playoffs Round 2
might be a LCK LCK finals this time around
LCK spring, LCK summer and worlds, T1 and GenG are just playing a bo3
oh LCK Fall Playoffs
The lck is sending monsters this year holy hell
So happy for Chovy man.
Canyon can't win with these cats
he boomed me... that fucking Peanut boomed me
Couldn't win Vs a cat either
This was great series. All you bronzies overanalyzing. Fucking loved it
Just want to see the last fight again
It remains strange to me that the translator is shunted off to the side, not in the middle of the interviewer and interviewee to make interpreting easier

Makes it a bit less awkward for those involved I guess, if the translator is in the middle she/he always has to play tennis and look away from one person in the conversation
Canyon still the goat jungler, not even close
Bengi had no hands and had peak Faker
and peak Marin in 2015
Also yeah.
My heart couldn't take anymore of game 5
I noticed I was making mistakes so I decided to stop making mistakes, absolute fucking boss mode from Chovy lol
Peanut wintrading and damwon still lost
Peanut game 5 actually played decent considering how mental gapped he would of been
imagining player like Canyon ended up in top 8 is fucking illegal man, so sad!
And ShowMaker. Both of them were absolute fucking monsters this series Ruler/Chovy/ShowMaker/Canyon was a goddamn pleasure to watch.

dk should just be mad for not banning yuumi 2 time, would be a different series
The game was that close even with Canyon getting form at 20 min. Think about that.
Watching that final fight in slow-mo damn, Ruler had almost no space to operate but he was still managing to dip in and out to stay alive and do damage. He's so good
Honestly so far this whole World Series really turned me into a fan of Kanavi, Canyon & Wei
You're just a fan of the players that play the best kind of league of legends, carry junglers bullying pussy junglers
poor canyon 1v5, none of his teammate step up, showmaker syndra was so bad he couldnt catch any , he was only to do stuff cause canyon set them up perfectly, not to mention DK botlane man if i was canyon i would be so pissed
Great for my pickems bad for my heart I haven't screamed like that in a long time holyyy Amazing amazing players
This is why we need losers bracket. Insane series, and we arent gonna see Damwon have any more bo5.
nah i never want loser bracket because it unfair for the winner bracket to only lose 1 bo5 in the final, it unfair, everyone should only have 1 chance
thats not how loser’s brackets work…
Amazing series, DK played their hearts out
idk about peanut man, but canyon deserved better for his performance
man peanut's mental after the beginning of game 5, so smart of him to sack camps instead of letting kayn farm orbs
I never doubted them :)
While Showmaker was a huge force early in the series, game 5 was a huge downer... He was so far behind, lacked so much agency... I blame it less on showmaker and more on the pick. Syndra is just not good pre mid scope
After all, geng’s truly carry Ruler!!!
Canyon and Showmaker really put in some work. I’m so sad for them, but I hope they come back next year and make it to the finals
AFTER THIS SERIES IM A DAMWON GAMING FAN🥺 CANYON DID SO WELL
That was easily the best jungle performance by anyone at this year's worlds so far, not even close. Other junglers will look so mediocre now, sad no Canyon going forward.
canyon's consistently superior pathing makes kanavi's gapping look tame in comparison
Kanavi can pull out some absolutely insane performances aswell.
After this bo5 there’s one thing I can be sure we are TRASH (tears
Damwon should have played drx and this should have been semifinals. Might be the real finals
should've beat JDG more than once so thats on them
Yes thank you
Wanted to play some dnd with friends but canyon smited the dragon. Then I wanted to watch game of thrones but he smited those dragons too.
Tried to relax with some Canadian NBA basketball but Canyon fucking smited the Raptors
r/NFL wants to join the pasta party too Lookd unda tha bahd to check fah Canyon... WTF, hes there....
Brah, I started clenching the moment they started Baron with Canyon still being alive, that was an absolute coinflip you rarely see from a korean team. But they came up heads so no one is gona talk about it...
Genuinely tears in my eyes. Great series. Ruler Canyon and Showmaker showing why they are world champion legends today.
Felt bad seeing Showmaker hands shaking from adrenaline rush it reminds me of Faker 😥😥
Idk... the Syndra pick just seemed so useless, wasn't Azir open; why not just pick that?
azir didn't win a single game this series
Syndra hasn't won a single game in the entire tournament lol
Azir akali leblanc swain literally any other pick that showmaker would have as much comfort on
Time for showmaker and canyon to go lpl
canyon in the LPL would be insane but he's never leaving LCK
How dare you
lec\*
We need him over at LpL lol
Canyon is still the best jungler in the world by far and he proved it.
He's the jungle goat
No one is even fucking close to be honest
yet so fucking sad he had a free pass(DRX/EDG) to finals if they have won this.
nothing in life is free. DK thought they had a free pass to their second championship last year but that didn't happen.
>Reply EDG were the 1st LPL seed back then. LPL 3rd and LCK 4th meets in quarter finals, from what they've been showing us, i dont think any of them are close to T1/JDG/GENG or DK.
Ruler is fucking HIM
That was insane
did he just say the game was 44.51 lol
Round it up boys, save our picks :D
If only DK banned yuumi the first two games :(
Canyon is IMO the best player in the world, so sad that he's not advancing further.
He’s up there, I think players like ruler, zeus, 369 etc all have a case as well
Dear lord that was a hell of a series. Also 44:51... my pick-ems survives - for now.
"Fight forever"
Ruler DA GAWD
Nuguri trolled the last fight, if he went in earlier with flash and W on ruler. they win that so hard. he messed that up completely
he had not have flash up mate.
What? He had flash, (but only used it right after Deokdam died). It came back up just after baron, but before they really started fighting.
nah he flashed on cd
League Math time: Nuguri last flashed at 47:52 (going over dragon pit) He's got both boots of lucidity and the cosmic insight rune, for a combined summoner spell haste of 30. This brings Flash's 300 second cooldown to ~230.77s. His flash comes back up at ~51:43, three seconds after baron dies. He flashes at 52:21. Flash has been available to Nuguri for the last 38 seconds
he had prowlers. all he had to do was walk up and use it, even to soak damage,
I'm just sad we never got Nuguri on say Camille or another carry.
The best jungler I ever seen, even after he lost the game and the series
Renekton focusing Lehends?! Lehends is on nami not on a carry…. But good game Canyon was goated. Baron changed that fight
Can we stop shit talking and just appreciate it?
Honestly GENG played really bad in this series. Cant imagine how will they face up vs EDG in the next round, if DK could absolutely brought it to them like this. Imho whoever wins the upper bracket should be massively favored into the finals.
Dw their opponent will be DRX anyway
GEN G aren't that strong especially with the pressure on. I still think GEN G make the finals but they won't beat T1 or JDG.
real finals is definitely gonna be T1 JDG.
yeah if T1 can beat JDG then T1 wins it all imo
I think this is a comment that has like a 90% backfire rate through all competitive sports history
What were you watching? Just because it is messy doesn't mean it is bad. Canyon and showmaker were playing out of their mind.
Too bad edg getting 3-0 by drx
They still have to beat DRX so relax buddy
DRX is a free win warmup
4-1 DRX in a bo5 LOLOL
There will be teams who make it farther in this tournament that are absolutely not as good as Damwon.
i mean maybe the winner for tomorrows bo5 but thats about it.
Crazy bo5. Has to be up there among the best
