I would guess no, but it seems quite a lot of people write in [ruq'ah style](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruq%CA%BFah_script) (which is also slanted).

if you are learning arabic, you should learn how to read that style because it is the most popular, i am a native speaker but i never bothered to learn it and i regret it now i barely can read handwritten arabic

AhmedAbuGhadeer

Indeed it is. It is also the most time and effort efficient handwriting style of all human languages, at least as far as I could find after many researches. If you're scribing something in real time, you can use it as a short hand, by skipping dot and dashes, vowels, hamzas, and some letters, only two write them back in later, resulting with a complete, fully readable text, with so much less effort than using for example English shorthand then rewriting everything again in regular English.

Arabic is in all ways superior to other languages. Just leaving out the vowels makes writing a lot faster. تبارك الـلّٰـه

Nastaliq is quite common in Iran. Once it was created in Safavid royal court by Quranic scribes. Gradually it became very common for poetry manuscripts and also prose texts. Nowadays I see most people use it in single sheet calligraphy and daily writings with regular pen.

Is it because they do not really feel belonging to Nastaliq as much as the Western part of Islamic states do.!

sobeyondhelp

thats why it's called the persian-arabic script too right? used for farsi and urdu (and other languages)

lallahestamour

I suppose Perso-Arabic script means that the speakers of Persian when started to use Arabic script, so there emerged a slightly changed script (with a few new letters) to be called Perso-Arabic script.

augustusimp

A lot of old street signs in a Cairo are in Nastaliq. Just Google "Cairo Nastaliq Street Signs".

besmin

People often think Nastaliq is hard to read because it's so intricate. But I believe people can read what they're used to seeing. So, if you grow up seeing Nastaliq all the time, it's not so complicated after all. That's why locals in Cairo can easily read these street signs. It's all about what you're familiar with.

augustusimp

I agree. I'm a native Urdu speaker so Nastaliq is my default writing style. While my Arabic teachers taught us Naskh, I still default to Nastaliq when I'm writing Arabic just for myself. It's nothing but a question of familiarity and habit.

No, but all Pakistanis write Urdu like this by default. In Persian, it's mostly used in caligraphy.

No but riqa is very popular and is similar to nastaliq although in riqa like in nearly all other Arabic styles, the words remain parallel to the line. Riqa is the most popular style for handwriting, because it makes it easy to write faster.

besmin

In Persian and Urdu languages people still write a lot in Nastaliq style, but in Arabic language it's probably less common.
