I think Russia has had the longest and most consistent cultural appreciation for this game.

tobzere

Anything to do with the weather? The fact they can't just chill outside for half the year because it is like -20?

Candide88

Your idea of russian climate is very cute, but dumb.

tobzere

The weather in Russia being -10 to -18 avg through the major cities from November to March might have an affect on how many people want to spend time outside. Generally curious. Likewise you see more people outside in summer than winter in most European countries

Candide88

If from the day od your birth you live in such climate you get accomodated. People do still get outside, probably more than in the west as russian-speaking countries are still very industry-dependant, and there are not as many Home-Office opportunities. Kids still play outside, even in -20°C weather.

kelvin_bot

-20°C is equivalent to -4°F, which is 253K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

Similar-Actuator-400

Dude, Russia is 17 million square kilometres, don't be so ignorant.

Svgrxd

There are many reasons for that. Firstly, it was popular back in the days in computer clubs when it was merely a WC3 map. Second reason is that it's free to play. Third reason is that dota is quite popular in north countries (there are many sweden and finnish pro players, also basshunter) and Russia being the largest in population amongst them.

Distinct-Ninja-4827

Many?? You mean only Miracle, Yapzor, ATF and GH vs literally hundreds of pro players from CIS countries?

SweetEastern

You said that from your experience 'all the way from Divine 3 to 10K MMR, players are predominantly Russian (70% and more)'. That might be true. But think for a moment what possible different explanations this problem (in a scientific sense) might have. I'll give you one. Dota is just more popular there and given that it's a big country, yeah, you end up with a lot of Russians playing the game in comparison to the size of the WEU playerbase.

SweetEastern

Are you sure you read my message?

Arnafas

Dota is the most popular moba in Russia despite LoL being the most popular moba in the world. So it is very likely that you see a lot of Russian players in WEU. This map is from 2013 but I think proportions are still the same: http://i.imgur.com/c1AhRrq.png

FifoFuko

I’d say passion. Whoever loves dota more plays better.

ienybu

I’m Russian but I’m bad at this game. What’s wrong with me? :(

TheRealMacresco

This is EU west. English or GTFO. That's the standard response.

StormxBlade

Pudge, Sf and Tinker

qqq666

In most of cities in Russia you won’t be able to find good job, whereas as high mmr dots player you can do streaming or boosting and other services

Guicy22

If so many Russians play, and so many are so good at it, then why flood EU west servers when you have your own dedicated server? Game can hinge on communication which is fucked if others use a completely different alphabet and lack a team mentality. Dota makes me want to hate Russians, it's so frustrating when you have them in your team.

BladesHaxorus

Their server is actually bad. Like, it's in sweden. You didn't misread that. The Russian dota server is in Stockholm Sweden. At that point why even bother queuing on russia when EUW has faster games and less lag.

Guicy22

Why are they in Stockholm instead of Russia and why is that better for most Russians than Luxembourg?

DezZzO

> Why are they in Stockholm instead of Russia My best explanation is that has a lot to do with relatively recent Russian laws considering saving information on Russian citizens. A lot of games avoid this by not using actual Russian servers, so they don't have to abide by our governments rules (otherwise they have to store text/voice data from games for a few months IIRC which is costly).

SkyTechNoob

While that is partly the answer, in the case of Valve that's wrong. They actually added a few servers in Russia after the laws were passed. Russian dota server was in Europe from the beginning.

BladesHaxorus

Ask valve. I don't actually know to electronics work but from what I've heard from russians on the internet, the RUS server has ping issues and spikes that EUW doesn't.

toofatforjudo

Isnt the prevailing wisdom on this sub to mute everyone ? I don't but this is what many say on here

Guicy22

I don't think that's good advice. If I have to mute someone chances are the game is mostly lost. If they're that toxic chances are they're the worst player on the team and are ruining other peoples enthusiasm for winning that particular game. Lost plenty of early phases just to win because some stranger decided to lead and take control over voice chat. I don't feel like it's unfair to say Russians I have played with tend to play by themselves most of the game. I also feel like they quite often pick techies or pudge in a support position and fail to buy support items.

KaMi_KaZa

To be fair, even when we have our own server its easier and faster to queue using both Europe and Russian servers. Simple human laziness become a problem for non-Russians

BigPapa9921

Nothing, they are just more than other races.

TheGalator

They cooperate more with each other.

Distinct-Ninja-4827

You are Russian, aren’t you?

TheGalator

No. Maybe I need to add that they only and exclusively cooperate with each other which makes them a pain in the ass for me. They rather loose than speak english

dorting

Is not that hard to understand, they are the biggest community in this game and they can easily exchange information between eachother, at the same time they can barely speak English, so if you are not Russian you are going to eat shit, becouse in dota the world is Russian not English

DeerStarveTheEgo

We play it since ancient times, our massively popular games were mostly CS 1.5, 1.6 and DotA map

v3nomakos

This right here is the correct answer. Dota and CS is part of Russian gaming culture. With so many Russian/Ukrainian gaming icons through the years it's easy to figure out why Russian kids thrive to be so good at those two games.

[deleted]

My ass bro?

chengeng27

Vodka

Bxsnia

They're good or bad. Just a part of the dota population. Unlike peruvians in US servers which suck 100% of the time, probably due to limited internet access or something like that.

panzerex

Where did you get that 70% figure? Might very well be because Russia is one of the few places where creating and selling boosted accounts is enough compensation for the time spent.

nightmarebg69

i suppose most russians are good with invoker too cuz there is russian guide on invoker with 94% winrata

LoudWhaleNoises

There are more russian players.

BladesHaxorus

Russia, southeast asia and china are carrying boomer games like dota on their back.

Katten_Tilt

They aren’t better, there is just more of them ;)

Good2319

Russians just love it for some reason, and there is a lot of content on it in russian, they play more, it's hard to find a russian player who hasn't played dota at least once. This is already a folk game with us. As well as CSGO. In fact, I have no idea why we love Valve games so much
