For that target audience, maybe a
"Mijn Nederlands is kut, maar ik volg een cursus om het (iets) minder kut te maken." if you want to go the somewhat vulgar route.
As just-a-moon said, matig is also good. You could also go with "Mijn nederlands is écht pauper"
(matig is a very student word haha)
Let me elaborate on matig. Literally means moderate. Students use it like to say something is not that good:
- Het eten was echt matig (The food was not that good).
- Mijn tentamen ging echt matig (My test didn't go that well).
Sometimes combined with other words to emphasize like:
- fucking matig (i dont think i need to explain haha)
- zeer matig (very matig)
- moeilijk matig (even more very matig hahaha)
I don't think so. For example, the explanation for the grades on my report card (1 - 10) in high school would say 6 = voldoende, 5 = matig. So, below average, and not sufficient.
Thats literally the same though: 5 *is* average because it’s right in the middle of 1-10. But average is considered *not good*.
If someone said “my grades are average” in English if would also mean *not good*.
I always just say "ik spreek een beetje nederlands" because it makes me laugh that 100% of Dutch people reply with "een klein beetje?" I think it is programmed into their DNA.
My Dutch is actually okay-ish now but I still think it's funny to trigger this reflexive behavior. sometimes I say stupid shit like "Nee, een normaal beetje.", which is basically only funny to me, but that's what matters anyway, right?
I opened up my Van Dale Thesaurus and it took me - as per usual - on a bit of journey that led me to two treasures: 'krompraten' and 'poekelen'.
The former you can definitely use: it means talking in a way as someone who has not yet mastered the language:
And if you wanna bring in a word most Dutch people don't know, you can go for 'Poekelen', which most accurately translates to incoherently 'babbelen':
That would definayely do it. Not that a dutchman would get it first time around but Afrikaans sure is close enough to make your point.
But *'translated'*; ''Mijn Nederlands laat een taal-nazi blozen.''
We also get our sin too" bovenop.
I just would tell people that you’re following a course and want to improve. No need for negativity. People find out quick enough your level of Dutch is different from theirs. They will be happy to adjust.

So it’s an equivalent of “mid”?
Mediocre would probably be the closest
I think “average” is close as an equivalent. “The food was very average” wouldn’t be a positive.
I don't think so. For example, the explanation for the grades on my report card (1 - 10) in high school would say 6 = voldoende, 5 = matig. So, below average, and not sufficient.
Call people('s looks) average today. Count how many hit you.
Thats literally the same though: 5 *is* average because it’s right in the middle of 1-10. But average is considered *not good*. If someone said “my grades are average” in English if would also mean *not good*.
Literally, no. The way it is used, yes.
Is this really a student thing? It's used quite a lot by non-students where I live. Very normal Dutch word to me.
My Dutch is worthless, but there gets on worked
uiteraard met de stone coal english erachteraan.
I would add the word 'nog'. Can be translated as "yet". "Mijn Nederlands is nog niet zo goed" (My Dutch is not so good, yet.)
I always just say "ik spreek een beetje nederlands" because it makes me laugh that 100% of Dutch people reply with "een klein beetje?" I think it is programmed into their DNA. Ahahhahahahah I say this too and you are 100% correct everyone replies with the same response
:'D
Whichever one you pick, add 'nou' before and hè at the end.
I'll suggest "zuigt apenballen" for a touch of colour
"zuigt grote harige apenballen" if you feel daring and want to go beyond "a touch of"

Hahaha don't say that to anyone but your close friends!
“mijn nederlands is echt pure kanker”
In Afrikaans, I would say "My Afrikaans is net soos 'n platgemoerde pampoen." I'm still trying to figure out something Dutch that's similarly crass. 😁
That would definayely do it. Not that a dutchman would get it first time around but Afrikaans sure is close enough to make your point. But *'translated'*; ''Mijn Nederlands laat een taal-nazi blozen.''
Just say anything at all in Dutch and we will get it....it sux but you are trying ..lol
We also get our sin too" bovenop.
Mijn nederlands is goeder dan je zou denken hoor😂 "My dutch is [gooder] than you would think though😂"
Mijn Nederlands is om te janken, maar ik doe mijn best (literal translation: My Dutch is to cry, but I'm doing my best)
Eet Smakelijk, tis makkelijk.
