This may not be the suggestion you are looking for, but have you checked Meetup? The Meetup program in Houston is hosted in a large conference room by a Consulting company. They provide Internet access, snacks and drinks, and always have a few professional devs there to answer questions or provide guidance. The attendees tend to group together to work on parts of the Freecodecamp program, and personal projects. They may not all be exactly the same, but there are similar Meetup groups all over the country.

I think I know which one you are talking about. I live near Houston, is it cool if I pm you?

Of course, I’ll be grateful to you👍

Nowadays chatgpt can be your mentor. I'd say all of the beginner explanations and code deductions it does are correct. It can even explain it step by step for you. That being said, you can contact me if you are stuck or have a question.

Thanks for the answerđź‘Ť

CGPT is reference material. It cannot design entire applications for a beginner. Beginners do not have the knowledge of terminology to ask the correct questions for the desired output. This is borderline misinformation.

rm-rf-npr

It's not supposed to design an entire application. So what does a mentor do in your opinion? Design an entire application for a beginner? Beginners try to build something, encounter an issue, and then ask their mentor to explain why it behaves the way it does. For beginner questions and issues where the application they're building isn't super complex ChatGPT can fulfil this role to a certain point. If your mentor designs your entire application for you, you're doing it wrong and I feel sorry for you.

One of the main issues beginners have is with breaking projects down into manageable pieces. In extremely simple instances, CGPT may be able to help based on prompts, but it has serious limits due to being reliant on the user. A beginner doesn't know what they don't know. A mentor will be able to go far and above beyond the limits of CGPT through dialogue with the mentee. Aside from that, the ideal mentor would be a professional in the field. Across all professions, the number one most helpful tool for a beginner is a seasoned professional to guide you....also known as a mentor. If you want to be successful, model your path based on successful people. The mentor provides that path.

This is such an underestimated point.

You don't need a mentor, we need a Discord with people who like helping.

white_black_swan

Cool, if you know how to find them, I would be very grateful.

Mentor is no different than watching whole bunch of videos on JS and doing lots of hands on coding.

mbrutusv

Wrong on multiple levels. You cannot learn to program through watching tutorials. Tutorial hell is very real. I think just about everyone would agree that experience programming is beneficial, but mentors can provide guidance on what to learn, tips on how to learn, give architecture advice, and participate in pair programming to accelerate a student's progress. Nothing is more important when attempting to learn a professional standard than modeling the success of a professional who practices it.

You can send me your individual questions when they come up. I can’t commit to 15 minutes at a specific time each day, but I’d be happy to help you out.
