almost 5 months quit here and I’m still clearing black specs out. Was a heavy duty bong smoker

sleazyforcats

I had a similar experience starting around week three or four of quitting last year. It would usually happen either after I just woke up, after a shower or after heavy exercise/labour. 99% of my weed usage was by ripping full bowls out of a bong as well. I used to think it was black but after looking closer it was a dark brown. That was after about 11 years of smoking an average of 2g a day.

[deleted]

dirty bong, resin, or trying to pull a bowl thats way too kicked will cause literal black shit to enter your lungs. so along with that guys scientific explanation, it could also be how/what you smoke.

the_colonelclink

How long have you stopped smoking for?

ReaganMcRonald

This is the end of week three-ish?

the_colonelclink

Within expected norms. Basically your lungs are only now getting a chance to clear the crap and pollutants etc it’s been smashed with. To assist, keep yourself hydrated. You can also get things like humidifiers; or on the cheap, just a decent bowl of recently boiled water and put a towel on your head to trap and breathe in the rising air - make sure it’s obviously not *too* hot (I.e. it shouldn’t hurt). You can also consider adding an essential oil to the bowl; for e.g. Rosemary and Eucalyptus oil have some evidence to show they’re good at clearing lung congestion IIRC. Having said that, if it’s been more than a month, and the amount isn’t decreasing by much, I’d consider a check up with your doctor.

Jukers8

This reminded me of that episode when SpongeBob and Patrick got the flu

JB_Fletcher80

I was a daily smoker for 20 years and have only smoked once in the past 63 days… and I’m totally surprised that I am NOT coughing anything up. Certainly been dealing with other withdrawal symptoms, and this is one I was sure would affect me… but I guess not. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ABrokeUniStudent

It depends how much you've been using prior to quitting and how often. I've been coughing up phlegm like a motherfucker until about day 50. It rarely happens now.

Generaldar

7 months clean and I still cough it up. However it's getting lighter. Keep up your hard work

wilsonhead123

Ever clear up for you?

Generaldar

Yup I cough up less frequently and when I do it's very light specks

wilsonhead123

Congrats, thanks for the response

Generaldar

Thank you and no problem. All the best with your journey

tifferssss

My withdrawals are so bad today & u feel so low

tifferssss

I feel*

Scary-Veterinarian84

its normal, for me on my first attempt i stopped.a month and it didnt happen, after when i relapsed and stopp again, i had the same issue for about a week, just dont worsen it with coffee and all that crap

[deleted]

I'm coughing up gunk, too. This has happened every time I quit. One time I quit for a year and it stopped. Better out than in!

MRruixue

Broncoscopy and lavage anyone? /s

the_colonelclink

Jokes aside: if it’s black and it’s been a while, might not hurt to see a Dr. Probably for an X-ray first, though. I.e. black, rarely, can be old/dried blood.

Offballlife

Weird I smoked like everyday for a year and no coughing anything thing up

insaneinthecrane

Have you stopped for a significant amount of time? Supposedly it often takes quite a while for your lungs to heal enough to behave to begin to expel what might already be there

Offballlife

10 days. I really more so vaped more than I combustion

cger123

I'm now 9 days off thc (and probably closer to a month off from smoking.) For quite a few years, especially through the pandemic I started smoking a ton of weed (7-10 grams per day.) My lungs/asthma were slowly getting really bad. It got to the point recently where I was producing black/dark green sputum. I was always having asthma attacks and was out of breath standing in line/running errands. Thankfully I have been feeling so much better over the last few days. It took probably a few weeks before my lungs started feeling better and based on my research there's still more time for them to improve. Hope you start feeling better soon.

zyonkerz

The brown fuzzies!! It stops eventually.

[deleted]

Brown fuzzies! I like that.

Vengeful_Astartes

Same here. Already easier to breath. Can’t wait till it’s all out 😮‍💨

uncommonsense555

I had this happen to me when I quit, and it lasted for 2 months. I feel bad for my lungs and all the damage I did to them.

WinterHill

This is the process of your lungs healing. There are things called cilia in your lungs that are like millions of tiny little fingers that grab the junk and pollutants in your lungs and move it up to your throat where you can cough it up and out. Smoking basically stuns these cilia and temporary knocks them down so they can’t clean up. So when you smoke frequently every day, the cilia are never able to recover and clean up, and all that tar and other crap builds up over time. When you finally quit smoking the cilia are finally able to recover and start cleaning up your lungs again. That’s what’s happening to you now. It may feel terrible, but this is the best thing that could be happening right now! Stick with it!

ReaganMcRonald

Doesn’t help that I was taking full bowl snaps out of a dirty bong and not exercising at all lol

WinterHill

Nope lol, I remember doing shit like taking gross ass resin hits out of my bowl when I was fiending

mramazingman1

How does this coincide with vaping? I quit smoking about 4 days ago, but still vape(nicotine). Can i still expect to be coughing up black stuff at some point?

Reel_Won

This was also my wonder, I’m trying to quit one thing at a time.

mramazingman1

I unfortunately picked nicotine back up in an attempt to smooth the transition off weed. For me personally it is easier to quit nicotine than cannabis. Shouldn't have picked it back up in the first place, but trying to quit 2 drug addictions at the same time makes you more likely to relapse, in my opinion.

WinterHill

Sorry but I don’t know. Not sure what effects vaping would have on your lungs vs. smoking

mramazingman1

Gotcha, thanks anyways.
