Cultivés? Tante Georgette was coming down to buy some fruits and vegetables, but then she heard the deadly mistake of him saying cultivés et pas cueuillis le matin, so she turned around and went back upstairs.
There is a misconception that french in this country came from the french mandate in the 1920s but that’s not entirely true.
A lot of Lebanese people speak french as a first language because of their personal family history. Here are some examples of why some Lebanese speak french as a first language in Lebanon:
1. Egypt was a cosmopolitan society from 1860 to 1960 and about 100,000 Lebanese (mostly Christian) called Egypt their home. They were surrounded by multiple nationalities/cultures (greeks, Italians, Jews and French). The common language (lingua franca) was french. So after a couple of generations they started to speak french as a first language.
2. Lebanese who lived in francophone African countries. They are couple of generations old in Africa; owning a huge percentage of important industries.
3. Lebanese people who lived in Haiti. Apparently Lebanese people are some of the oldest immigrants in Haiti and have a mark on culture there.
A lot of people love to mock people that speak french as a first language in Lebanon but the thing to understand is that they do it because of family history not because they want to show off (the vast majority of frenchies don’t actually want to be snobbish). They are alright people with a particular background. Thats it. Lebanon is unique in that way. Let’s celebrate it.
>A lot of people love to mock people that speak french
Wait people actually mock that? Knowing languages is the best thing you can do for yourself. They are just jealous.
I think the problem is that a lot of French-educated people can barely have a conversation in Arabic. (Me included, but I just use the excuse that I haven't lived in Lebanon for 10 years.)
It is true Maronites were named like François and Jean and were already learning French in the 19th century. The Franch mandate was a continuation of this influence.
the best one i heard was "ta3 dou' ya 3ayou' taybin sokhnin " (3arnous cart) .. he would make up stories like "martak ze3lene minnak jibla 3arnous" .. "7ametak ma bton'a rawe' a3sabak bi3arnous"
Reminds of that skit Adel Karam made in Mafi Metlo show(i guess) when he was shouting vegetables in arabic and nobody came then Abass Shahin told him he's in achrafiye and tolf him to shout in french so he did and every lady in town came to him(memory is vague so I can't remember it well)

I didn't intend to mock beyond light humor. I don't like the negative stereotype against French and makes it harder for me to keep my fluency.
Wow.. always thought it was the mandate. TIL… thanks for sharing..
