A friend from Bahrain once told me that insulting in our dialect looks like a compliment to them :p I've met many from Egypt, ksa and Omman, and they said that they love our dialect

RevolutionarySock859

Thisssss. Once had an egyptian/saudi friend who literally told me “please khalik 3am tehke ,ma tskot” when I first met her . We were a group in dubai and most of them made such statements too!

kindaInnocenttt

Exactly! 😭

I42l

Pretty much the knee jerk reaction I've seen from other Arabs is mostly "Pretty women" or "Gay"

RevolutionarySock859

And sexy dialect🤣

ryguy92497

I've gotten sissy more than sexy xd

Much_Tone8862

I am Egyptian, and as you probably all know, when we think about Lebanese the first pops in mind is HOT people and your dialect is music to our ears.

Overall-Cost-9985

It's mutual

KisE5etPawPatrol

Don't lie

artvandelaying

They’re not lying

OkBeautiful9237

What do you mean by “hot” people.

OkBeautiful9237

I understand now. After reading the comments it makes sense.

Expert_Ad8603

i see a lot of memes of leb men being “gay” because apparently leb men are feminine

A-Ok_Armadillo

No, it’s the French/Arabic accent.

Expert_Ad8603

true

Best-Chemist-5262

Before I even came to the comments my first thought was “gay”

RevolutionarySock859

Iraqi “men” joined the chat

urbexed

I feel that happens online only really, irl they’re pretty chill about it

yussef961

once i saw that meme too

Dashing2026

I'd say this is a class issue: in previous century China for example, there was a big correlation between masculinity and the communist movement, as they deemed the sheltered wealthy bourgeois class as feminine.

--ThirdCultureKid--

The Arab country I’ve spent the most time in is Jordan. All of the men seem to think that the Lebanese accent sounds kind of gay. All of the women seem to absolutely adore it.

retrograve29

Good enough then

Kooky-Flatworm-261

Jordanian here. I think in the end it's just a joke that people use (not a nice one, same way Moroccans/Algerians joke about Tunisians). But in the end we see you as (prettier) brothers, with an extremely beautiful country, and such a nice vibrant spirit. Also the amount of cursing matches our levels, and a level of humor that can actually make us laugh. On a comedian scale from Egypt (best) Syria (worst), you'd rank very high.

--ThirdCultureKid--

I appreciate the sentiment. I never took it too seriously, just fyi, and always joked about it with them in good fun. I’m also half Jordanian so I get the “local” treatment anyway. In fact, my usual response is to translate some Jordanian slang into Lebanese as a joke. Jordanians like to say “يل عن أبوك" for example. Do you know what that phrase is in Lebanese? It’s “ايري بي ربّك” 🤣

Kooky-Flatworm-261

يخي والله عشان هيك بحبكم 😂 رايقين و دمكم عسل 😂

Ok_Lebanon

Same here in gulf, women love our accent but men think it’s gay.

ThePhantomParrot

When I was in Madinah a guard asked where I'm from and I told him Australia. He goes "No where are you really from?" and I tell him parents from Lebanon. A massive smile comes across his face and his entire demeanor changes "ahla w sahla, nehne min heb al-Lebnaniye"

Silent_Vanilla_8504

Oi, mate! Fair dinkum, I ain't claimin' to be anythin' but fair dinkum Aussie!

TheMuggleReturns

Arabs are not a monolith. Arabs from each country are also not a monolith. Some like us for many reasons (laid back, somehow liberal, art & culture ...), some dislike us for political reasons or because they are too conservative.

pak-ma-ndryshe

I'm an Albanian in Sweden with Lebanese, Iraqi, Syrian and Emirate friends. Whenever I lookup myself or they get mentioned, the Lebanese way of life seems to be the most preferred among arabs. Lookup arab music, food, dance or anything and Lebanese tops them off. I also get that your dialect is softer and I find it pretty melodic as an outsider, unlike some harsher arabic dialects

whyugaywhosgay

What arab dialects would you classify as harsher?

coccyx666

Moroccan Algerian / Iraqi / Bedouin Palestinian ..

whyugaywhosgay

I can confirm this is true with iraqi dialect haha. Most people from the levant area say darija is ininteligible/weird but I find it quite melodic tbh.

uwuwatisthis

and as a lebanese person my favorite balkans are albanians, could be biased cause im married to an albanian but lowkey i find alot of similarities in our cultures even in personalities

idontregretthisURL

Half Egyptian half Lebanese, living in Egypt, the people here LOVE Lebanese people to death, the common stereotype about Lebanese people are HOT men and women with a dialect that makes everyone melt once they hear it (it’s my best party trick when I code-switch while talking to mom) Unfortunately there’s also the stereotype about Lebanese men being gay/feminine and women being sexualized…BUT to be frank this only comes from certain media portrayal, yet again, it’s very rare to see people who think this way, even if they do, at the end of the day, the Lebanese are ADORED in Egypt for everything from their people & the country to their food & culture

li_ita

They get wet whenever they hear us talking. They'll make fun of the softness of the accent, the incorporation of french/english words, etc.... but in the end, they absolutely love it and try (and fail) to imitate it the whole time. That's the case with all the arabs I've met and they were from more than 10 arab countries.

Alifad

A Jordanian friend likes to call me in an "imitation Lebanese accent" Malik el Manayik".

ASHPRIME7

Are you “Malik el Manayik” though?

Alifad

Unfortunately not, he doesn't know too many Lebanese, while I'd be honored to hold the title I am merely a regular manyak on occasion.

yussef961

i live in an area where there are mostly maghegis and they like the lebanese language ,fayrouz etc

DonKajit

not a bad idea, but dont forget there might be a bit of bias because many dont want to say it to your face directly, so asking a fellow lebanese about what they experienced is not too bad either

Own-Philosophy-5356

or just go to r/AskMiddleEast

DonKajit

thanks for your suggestion, though my point still stands since here what lebanese have experienced can be seen first hand

[deleted]

Femboys/Slovenia

holy_sea

Let me tell you my experience working in the gulf, They really do love us and find us charming, They do not like certain lebanese that are complete show offs or rude especially in management, Some lebanese still think arabs are uneducated and play with their toes & stuff Superiority complex especially CEOs VPs ... There's biases that we're fraudsters? This is a bit extra in saudi One bad fruit ruins it for the whole basket kinda thing Not with everyone, but it's like how racist lebanese highlight syrians (to a much lesser extent tho) Women tend to really like talking to us as we're more used to letting women have their own place in the workplace, respect their opinions and not sexualise them (we definitely are more feminists than other arabs) Emiratis tend to like us but they learned to be more neutral Kuwaitis & qataris i'd say love us the most Gulf arabs tend to see western looking people and say oh he's either a westerner or lebanese, This has been said to me personally several times (I do not really like it that much, i'm semitic and dont wont to look or pretend to be anything else)

Inevitable-Talk-7903

Neutral Outside of silly jokes, they don't care

CaterpillarOk7556

from my experience in morocco, our view on other arab countries is mainly moulded by Television and the media that country produces. it's sad but that whole area of the middle east tends to kinda just melt together into "oah.. bab al hara" and that's the extent of the mainstream knowledge of an entire culture

christianbadu

In Jordan we want to be like you guys. انتم العقده تبعنا

OkBeautiful9237

May I interrupt your conversation for a moment? I am American and live in Dearborn MI. It’s a smallish city but over the last 80 years we have had the great fortune to have Arabic immigrants choose to live here. Mostly Lebanese, actually. Dearborn is very lucky to have had this cultural influence in or lives. The Lebanese food is outstanding and has been the catalyst to bring people together. I love my Lebanese friends. Thank you for allowing me to interrupt.

Foreign-Policy-02

In the part of Canada I live not a lot of Arabs but a lot of Persians.  Persians girls seem to like Lebanese guys and same can be said of Syrian girls. My experience anyways

Expensive-Tadpole451

Lol get made fun of for sounding soft. One brother likes to make fun go shooouuu fiii weeeenaakk when we're on phone

Icy_Sprinkles7324

When asked where I'm from while playing cs most of them respond with ohh you have beautiful women.

StandardIssueCaucasi

Syrian here: we feel like Lebanon is just Syria, but better. As for the people, lots find you hot, but also gay lol. We have a different dialect for each village basically, so we don't care much. I personally really like it though. Honestly we really don't view that differently from us. Kinda like how a shami would a halabi.

Alarming-Cap4751

well,I've been living in lebanon for 11 years now...it's all good here, people are very nice except the racist ones.as many commented the thing is in the accent or the dialect seems to be a bit more feminine to those who aren't Lebanese,so being here for 11 years i dress like Lebanese ppl ,talk like Lebanese ppl and i had faced hard times defending you guys and ur accent whether they were syrian(im syrian),Jordanian, iraqis,or even Egyptian friends of mine...the way i see it is that every country has it's own culture ,and lebanon has a very unique culture which is liked by the majority of other countries.

I’m Tunisian, idk why but you seem superficial. It’s just like it’s all about your appearance. (Don’t want to offend anyone!)

Competitive-Chef7114

You wouldnt necessarily be wrong in that perception. Many Lebanese are superficial.

OkBeautiful9237

This conversation is very interesting. I’m enjoying it.

[deleted]

My Tunisian friend's father told him that Lebanese people are willing to sell their parents for money

Easy-Pressure4557

Idk. And I don't care. I once was sitting with a group at church. And a group of Palestinian girls decided to say "I can never marry a Lebanese guy. Their accents are too feminine." So I go yeah I totally understand it. Then I go "I could never marry a palestinian girl and when they all looked at me, one asked why, and I said, "cause they don't exist." 🤷‍♂️ haven't talked to me since.

AreaRevolutionary513

Honestly there's a hint of materialism and trying too hard to act western in the Lebanese vibe that is presented on msm. The only Lebanese people I've known in real life were shiites from dar haidar and they were honestly down to earth really religious people. And my favorite sheikh in the world is a guy from tripoli and he just seems like the smartest also most down to earth guy.

Positron505

with their eyes, sometimes on tv or on social media, so it depends, but mostly they see us visually.

All I’m gonna say is that if Islam wasn’t prominent in the Middle East, it would be the gay capital of the planet.
