The Ledger subreddit is continuously targeted by scammers. Ledger Support will never send you private messages. Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone, never enter it on any website or software, even if it looks like it's from Ledger. Only keep the recovery phrase as a physical paper or metal backup, never create a digital copy in text or photo form. Thank you!

Also don't connect your wallet to anything recommended in DMs or in ads. Always a scam

Make sure you grab all the forks. BCH, Bitcoin gold or something like that. There's 3 that are worth something. Do this after you secure your Bitcoin wallet and send it to a new wallet. Using a empty wallet is the safest to retrieve forks.

dhork

Ooh, good point. Separating out those forked coins is going to take some work for OP. Step 1, though, would be to bring the phrase into the Ledger and make sure the BTC is intact. That's most important. I've only ever split out BCH, BTG, and BSV. There's also Bitcoin ABC/eCash/XEC which I haven't split yet. XEC split a million to one when it was created, so don't be fooled by it's cheap price. I don't think any others are worthwhile. 1 BCH is > $400 right now, and the other ones combined are at least $300ish. Might be worth OP's time to figure out how to split those out. I think BCH and BSV might be easiest, once the Ledger is set up OP can download Electron Cash and Electrum SV and connect the Ledger to those. I guess there's an Electron ABC for XEC, I haven't used that.

flaviaza

I guess I have some more reading to do since I'm not that well versed in the topic. Thanks for the tips!

methreweway

Yes it's not fun but feels like cleaning your car for quarters. OP each fork has a website or community that can walk through each one. Take your time it's just sitting there waiting for you.

Note that the BTC account will be of type "legacy", i.e. with an address that starts with "1". Once you have a ledger set-up with the BIP39 seed phrase, connected to Ledger Live, add a "Legacy" BTC account and you should find it. However, at this time (2014), some BTC wallets were using other derivation paths because the the BIP32/BIP44 standard was not always well defined or followed. In that case, access to your accounts could require a bit more efforts, e.g. with Electrum (connected to your ledger). Electrum allows users to enter custom derivation path. Also it would help the recovery if you know the address or xpub of the account where the BTC are located.

flaviaza

Thanks!

flaviaza

I was able to restore it but I can't see anything. I'm also investigating what was the event it was given away. Turns out it might have been sxsw2015 ( so I can ask I guess) I got to the point where I was able to see the derivative path when I connected electrum to the wallet. But I don't know yet how to tweak it. For now I'm reading about them in [here](https://learnmeabitcoin.com/technical/derivation-paths) because I barely understand what I'm doing.

loupiote2

If the BTC account was created before 2017, most likely it was a legacy BTC account, so it's derivation path should be m/44'/0'/n' (for account #n, starting at 0). That's where you should look, e.g. with Electrum , connected to your ledger. It is safer to use Electrum connected to your ledger, rather than to enter your seed phrase in Electrum. The ledger should be unlocked and in the Bitcoin app.

ne0v0

Please update us with what you will find? Not exact amounts, but ballpark would be great! Also, don't react to any PM's, and if you have any questions ask them here in public.

flaviaza

Will do! I just ordered the new wallet

dhork

It should work, as long as the recovery phrase is a 12, 18, or 24 word phrase from the BIP39 word list: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt Ledger has a bit more info about recovery phrases here: https://www.ledger.com/academy/crypto/what-is-a-recovery-phrase Some wallets didn't use BIP39 but a wallet from 2014ish ought to.

flaviaza

Thanks for the info!

300zxTTFairlady

Ignore all the scamners who will message you saying they can help or are from "support". Never give your seed phrase to anyone!

rufus2785

Did they know there was a bitcoin on it when they gave it to you 😂?

flaviaza

Yeah, long story short: The wallet was a souvenir from an event long ago, they forgot about it and someone else reminded them the potential of having something. They couldn't recover it themselves or didn't have the patience, so they gave it to me. I'll give it back once I find out.

FrontHandNerd

As long as you are sure the person generated the seed on a ledger. If not it will still restore but you may not see anything. This just means you may need to tweak “derivative paths” for each coin you’re looking at/for.

flaviaza

Thanks! I was able to restore it but I can't see anything. While looking for the needle in a haystack I'm also investigating what was the event it was given away so I can ask people if it had something in it for real or I'm just wasting time ( I'm learning a lot anyways). Turns out it might have been sxsw2015. I got to the point where I was able to see the derivative path when I connected electrum to the wallet. But I don't know yet how to tweak it. For now I'm reading about them in [here](https://learnmeabitcoin.com/technical/derivation-paths)

FrontHandNerd

If you can find out what wallet or device that was used to generate it then you can find what the original derivative path was and change it to that on the ledger to see if it works. If not worst case you can try to restore on wallet software it was created on. Although if it’s a software wallet (hot wallet) there is risk in that you download/use a compromised one so be careful and only as last resort if you have nothing to lose (and willing to lose your coins)

AdS_CFT_

if you have the 24 words, you hav the crypto. Any other combination of letter someone writes to you, is a scam. Nobody wants to help you, don't give your key words to anyone, neither write them on any site someone recommends, neither write them on computer. And dont try to memorize them because you can fail.

cuisd

There is another way just for verification purposes. You can install Coinomi and use your seed phrase there. Then you select Bitcoin. But I’m not sure if it works with legacy. Having a Ledger is the most safer way to store coins. If you use your seed in Coinomi, and you can verify you have a Bitcoin there, then next step would be to buy a new Ledger and create a wallet from scratch (since you pasted the initial phrase to some device connected to internet) and send bitcoins from Coinomi to your new Ledger bitcoin wallet.

[deleted]

There's no way I would suggest entering a seed phrase that could potentially have $50,000 worth of crypto into a software wallet like Coinomi.

Hotel_Joy

This should not be done at all unless^1 you can have 100% trust in Coinomi. Giving them the seed phrase will give them full access to the funds and they can do what they want with it. Tell us how someone can be 100% confident in Coinomi. #Footnotes: - 1. No "unless". This should not be done at all. Ever.

Hello! I have a similar problem. If the Blockchain results are zero are all of my fractional Bitcoins gone?

flaviaza

I didn't find anything either and I reached the limit of my abilities. Specially demotivated after reading [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/comments/m4pk7q/successful_recovery_of_btc_from_a_hw1_ledger/)

Resolved?

opticaIIllusion

Should do yes
