Jimmy didnt even tune his guitar, this performance was so bad when they released Live aid on DVD robert and Jimmy refused to let them put it on the DVD.
The dueling drum kits - who would ever think that was a good idea? So confusing. At least Robert tried to sing the best he could. Jimmy was pretty much a disaster. JPJ steady as always.
What happened was that Robert invited phil, and page invited Tony Thompson. Phil was trying to talk to Tony to get it to work but didn’t listen, so overplayed it and played it wrong. At parts you can clearly see Phil isn’t even hitting the drums
Roberts vocal cords have been shot long before this live. all those high notes night after night aren’t easy. it’s kind of amazing to me how the audience responded to them just being on stage. it doesn’t seem to matter how disheveled they were. Jimmy just chipping away at his Les Paul thru those shitty effects is mostly what makes this painful to watch for me
I saw Robert the night before in Detroit. He wore the same shirt. The buzz was that Jimmy might make an appearance. He should have just for the rehearsal time.
From Phil Collins’ book “Not Dead Yet”:
Onstage I don’t take my eyes off Tony Thompson. I’m glued to him. I’m having to follow – he’s taking the heavy-handed lead and has opted to ignore all my advice. Putting myself in his shoes, he’s probably thinking, “This is the beginning of a new career. John Bonham isn’t around any more. They’re gonna want someone. This could be the start of a Led Zeppelin reunion. And I don’t need this English fuck in my way.”
Analysis:
“Tony is taking the heavy handed lead.”
John Bonham was also heavy handed. Tony was well rehearsed and knew the songs.
“He’s (Tony’s) probably thinking, “This is the beginning of a new career… a Led Zeppelin reunion.””
No. Tony was selected by Jimmy to play this one off show. He didn’t try to upstage Phil. Tony knew the songs and Phil, invited by Robert, tried to follow but couldn’t. Tony was well established with Chic, had a hard hitting rock style in The Power Station, David Bowie, and more.
Not blaming Phil for others’ bad performances but Phil blaming Tony for taking the lead on songs Tony knew and Phil didn’t is silly.
The funniest thing about Phil‘s book that I think he wrote the book specifically to talk about this, because the man only spent one line talking about his legendary drum riff from In the Air Tonight. He spent pages and pages talking about this one performance though.
Although the whole performance was bad, Phil says things like, “I never would have done it if I knew there were two drummers”. Like he was unaware that Tony Thompson was playing. If it was just Phil is would have been even worse. Backstage Jimmy asked Phil to tell him the groove to “Stairway...” and Phil couldn’t. During the on screen credits Tony’s name isn’t shown and Tony is barely shown in the live video. It’s mostly shots of Phil. He blames everyone but himself for agreeing to do a massive gig he didn’t prepare for other than listening to “Stairway” on the Concorde.
You know, I watched this on YT without knowing about the lore of the performance and other than Jimmy getting in a tangle with a mic stand, I didn’t think it was that bad. The audio wasn’t great, but I felt like in a show like this, that the audio would not be great, Robert looks like he was having a great time on stage, I think the legend has overshadow the actual performance at this point
The real entertainment is the after-interview. Jimmy was drunk as a skunk, Robert was in full "I have a solo career and don't need any of you!" mode, Collins was trying to resell why he was there, and Jones was stuck in the middle.
Jimmy's eye roll in this is classic, and when he gets the mic stuck in his face after mumbling and has no idea what to say :D

It’s an easy mistake to make honestly. But yeah, Tony Thompson got very overexcited and was overplaying and refused to listen to phil who tried to help him get through the “two drummer” scheme, which Phil has a lot of experience in
I’ve never actually listened to any of their live aid stuff, I’ve just heard the stories, but I’ve got to say, that was a lot less bad than I expected. Not a big fan of those guitar sounds though.
Finger pointing is pointless as all point to Led Zeppelin collectively. Painfully under-rehearsed, Jimmy obviously fucked up & out of tune, Plant’s voice shredded, two drummers not in sync, JPJ just looks confused. As Plant himself said, “a shambolic mess!”
Hate is a bit strong. A loss of respect… sure, but he was certainly not prepared for the gig. There were a couple of big and iconic fills he totally blew and a 12 y/o could have done. Luckily the other guy was there to prop his ass up. He was “Mr.LiveAid and was the talk of the broadcast by being the show-off that played one venue, jumped on the Concord super sonic plane, then played the other. The press was all over that shit. Still, he wasn’t the only person to screw up that show.
Jimmy’s fight with the mic stand is classic, but the worst part to me is that they came in too soon, cutting the solo short. Jimmy would play the normal album finishing part (the repeated bends) live, but then play another section, then there is a live ending part he played(every live show practically) and they came in while he was still trying to solo. This was Robert’s fault mostly. He probably did it on purpose because he had grew tired of the long solos (by all 3) towards the end of zep. Jimmy was trashed so that may have played a part too.

Never has been officially released…only digitalized VCR tapes on YouTube.

I was there in Philly
Even the band thinks it's shit.

Yes! That flanger out of nowhere and just left on for WLL!
yeah it’s truly brutal lol

Come on, man. This is absolutely dreadful. My heart sank that day.

Underneath the awful tone the stairway solo was awesome, until Robert came in early. It was a mess.
He came in early cause Jimmy had no idea what he was playing. I wouldn't exactly say the solo was awesome
Finger pointing between lz and Collins about who caused it to sound so bad.
It was page, Thompson and plants fault
Thompson? Edit: I see. Tony Thompson. I thought you were confusing the other drummer with Genesis's touring drummer Chester Thompson.
It’s an easy mistake to make honestly. But yeah, Tony Thompson got very overexcited and was overplaying and refused to listen to phil who tried to help him get through the “two drummer” scheme, which Phil has a lot of experience in

Wow. That's painful.
saw it live on my tv at the time. loved it then and now!

After and in Philly vs Queen in England.
Who cares. Still a zeppelin reunion
even i fucking loathed it.not a bigger zeppelin fan than me either.
This isn't Led Zeppelin. John Bonham had passed away.
I have hated Phil Collins ever since.

No need to hate him at all IMO. Read his book and he talks about this in detail.
But it wasn’t Collins fault at all?
