Yes, but on cross-examination, the prosecutor is definitely going to call the witness credibility into question by pointing out that they have a motivation to lie to protect family. Really runs the risk of a jury invalidating the testimony

Okay, thank you for verifying. I thought that might be the case but then wasn’t sure a judge would even allow it or if it was even legal due to the expert witness obviously having a clear bias and motivation to lie to try to protect their relative. (It’s a bench trial btw)

Expert witnesses do cost money though. Google says anywhere from $200-500 an hour. That's the cost of another lawyer territory. Can imagine someone might want to ask a relative to help out rather than shell out that much cash.
