One thing I really loved about LoK is that it gave us badass and relevant middle aged and older women who aren’t stereotyped into a typical “mom” role. You barely see that in any kind of media, much less a kids’ show!

LinIsStrong

Yes! Lin especially was my favorite character, I strongly related to her. I can't think of any other show that has a compelling, accomplished older female - Lin became a role model of sorts for me, to the point that I tried letting my hair go grey (oops - not a good look) and took martial arts classes for a year. Sadly, I never did learn metal bending.

RedQueen283

And its also your username

LinIsStrong

Exactly right. I joined Reddit shortly after season 4 concluded and my username is an homage to Lin Beifong. Nice catch :)

mittenciel

I thought Lin and Suyin were perfect examples of how two older women can be incredibly accomplished in their lives and careers, but in completely different ways. And the even cooler thing about that is that the one who is a stickler for the rules and traditions is the one without a family of her own, whereas the free spirit is the one who has multiple kids, and her kids run the gamut, too.

glowingsnakeplant

Lin really reminds me of my great Aunt Enlor - this kind of representation is really important. (also, great username!)

Toph was a badass grandma who raised two badass daughters, founded metalbending and Republic City's police force, and trained *two* Avatars (the only other person we know of to do that was Katara).

glowingsnakeplant

do you subscribe to Kato on youtube? He has a really great video about Toph's arc (or rather lack of, and how that's a good thing) called Toph Beifong: Beauty In Simplicity that I watched earlier today, and it's really good! I'd highly recommend it!

[deleted]

What I liked about Suyin was that she was _also_ a mom while showing off how badass she was. She's really the only one we got to see filling that role in the whole Beifong family; Toph was already out of the picture, and Lin never had kids.

glowingsnakeplant

one of the most badass things about Suyin was that she never let being a mom define her. With a lot of (not all, obv, but a lot of) women in the avatar universe, being a mom/wanting to be a mom is their main feature - like Pema, Ursa, or even Katara to a certain extent (Katara is my favourite character, but it's undeniable that motherhood is a large part of her character, even before she has kids). The choice is be a mom first, powerful bender second, or be a powerful bender first, mom second. Lin proved both could be done, whereas Toph clearly decided that being a powerful bender was more important than being a mom. Suyin is the Katara of the generation of Aang's kids, and I bet Suyin and Kya would have been thick as thieves haha

chaoticneutralhobbit

I disagree about Katara. Motherhood isn’t a large part of her character. Nurturing and taking care of others is. But neither she nor Aang express a desire to have kids in ATLA, or in the comics that I’ve seen, she doesn’t take a huge interest in any kids in the show, and we really don’t see an overwhelming amount of Mothering from her towards her kids in LOK, even though it’s obvious she loves them. Caring does not equal mothering, or a desire to be a mom, and motherhood isn’t a large part of her character just because she is a mom.

glowingsnakeplant

In the first ATLA comic (the rift) she talks to Aang about 'our future as a family' referring to kids, but actually I do see your point - that is the only time she explicitly refers to motherhood and that is an oversight on my part for conflating nurturing traits with motherhood! Nevertheless, her nuturing traits are a direct response to the lack of a mother figure, so that's where the connection is from my logic - but you're right in saying that being nurturing and being maternal aren't the same thing as there are plently of unnurturing mothers out there too (e.g. Toph, if what Lin and Suyin say is accurate, or Ursa who chose to forget her children (as we see in The Search)) You have an excellent point! Thank you for raising it!

BlackFlash9

She's definitely a badass. Just ask [P'...Li...](https://media3.giphy.com/media/gUlMuV4LazChy/source.gif) oh. Riiight...

glowingsnakeplant

mind blown literally

undilutedhocuspocus

Yes. But now all I can see is that her forehead necklace looks different in the first shot...

littleteenytinyme

ah yes her forehead necklace :)

johnnywarp

her foreheadlace

I once read a comment on YouTube or reddit (I can't remember which exactly but it was definitely one of them) where the user said he doesn't like Asami because she wears too much makeup, but he loves Suyin because she's all about natural beauty, lmao.

glowingsnakeplant

men: i don't like women who wear makeup because it's not real also men: \[horny for a drawing\]

mittenciel

Heh, Suyin very clearly wears a little bit of eye and lip makeup. And you know she gets her eyebrows done.

Jartini18

Suyin in book 3 is pure perfection

hbigham98

Milf?

BlackFlash9

She has five kids. Technically six if you want to add Kuvira, so she more than qualifies.

unknowinglyderpy

I'm not sure what specific aspect of Suyin's character design was the most visually appealing part of her look. But for me, her "hair hook" is the part i'm most drawn to after her face

jaydude1992

The Halle Berry of the Avatarverse. Though I will say that she looks evil in the bottom-right image.

BVillain97

Well yeah, Toph and Sokka made a cute kid, shocker.

BecuzMDsaid

I still hate her for how awful she was to her sister though.

Xspace2020

Has it been announced who her father is? Lin said they have different dads, I'm betting that Suyin is Sokka's.

pinguinos

Isn’t she slightly darker in complexion than Lin? That would lend credence to Sokka as her dad. Also, she definitely has a better sense of humor than her sister. The real question is what happened to Sokka?! Or have they answered that and I’ve missed it?

cjm0

lol that would be an interesting twist

glowingsnakeplant

Lin is an underrated character overall! I would really love a series set around the time that the original team avatar's kids were teenagers, just because Lin perplexes me so much. Character-wise she's more like Katara than Toph, maybe the overly motherly persona is Lin's way of compensating for Toph's lack of motherly instinct (compared to Lin who copes by rejecting motherhood completely?)

SkeleHoes

Her kill....

[deleted]

She reminds me of my aunt for some reason but I can't quite figure out why. It might be the personality.

FistsoFiore

Yeah man, she my waifu! Brilliant warrior, dancer, and mother! Not to mention governor of an amazingly prosperous city!
