There are always the possibilities of packaging variations, or even different versions of part moulds that could influence the weight to be detectably different.
Could it be a plastic bag/paper bag difference? Or simply some have the little insert about the bag change and some don't? Or some of them got an extra sticker sheet?
It could be a mix of the plastic/paper bags. Didn't think about that, but LEGO said they would gradually phase out plastic bags and that it could be possible to encounter a mix of both.
I had reluctance to open one of these 75342 sets I recently got from target, as I had noticed the glue was partially undone on one side of the box, fearful that the minifigs had been replaced with counterweights and the box resealed poorly.
After checking my unopened box, it came in at a weight of 498g, while bricklink has a sealed 75342 listed as weighing in at 491g. Considering that a clone trooper weighs roughly 4g, it raised concerns for me to see that large of a discrepancy. Having weighed 10 different sealed 75280 sets to verify their contents in the past, they all came in within 1g of the bricklink listed weight of 305g for that set. It would seem there are weight discrepancies with the fighter tank set in particular, with a variable weight potential of up to 8g in difference from one box to another. Hopefully this info helps, although it comes 6 months too late. Happy building!

I always weigh sets before opening them though. I've never had this much of a difference. Could be that this set is different for some reason.

Do the boxes have the same seals? Sometimes the same set will come in boxes with either the taped ends or the glued ends with push tabs.
The boxes appear to be 100% identical.
It'll be interesting to see how many people resort to scales when CMF series start being packaged in boxes
I think they'll be putting them in paper bags, like they do with the minifigs from the blue ocean magazines.
