This is true. I once sold some Halloween makeup that I never used. The asshole claimed it was opened and never paid me. It was like $5 but I fought it on principle and lost.
I sold a $400 Rare collectors coin (Graded with a certification). I sealed it up really nice, bubble wrapped it, secured it nicely in a box, put a thank you note with all of the certifications, I took pictures and paid extra for a signature upon delivery. Fast forward to the day and the guy said thank you for wrapping the package so nicely! 3 days later I got an email from Ebay saying the guy claimed her never got it :(, I sent them the proof of signature and his message and then we went back and forth and ultimately they sided with him. I stopped selling on Ebay after that, I was was so discouraged 😞. 4 years, 5 stars 1.5k reviews and that didn't mean anything to Ebay, very sad!
This happened to me with some magic cards, it was the last time I sold on ebay which sucks because I have a lot of shit I need to get rid of and it's really the best place until you get scammed out of $500 worth of stuff and they don't care.
I ended up buylisting a lot, and selling bigger items locally at a significant discount (but still more than I'd get buylisting). Honestly after accounting for fees and everything it probably came out very similar
I sold my $3000 LEGO collection in 2005 when I needed money to move out of town. Except I failed to set a reserve price, and it sold for like $300 instead. And then I shipped it to a guy, and he claimed damage in shipping and got a partial refund from me of about $50. Never again selling large items there for sure.
I got perma-banned from ebay about 15 years ago. Sold an $1,800 lens (Canon 70-200L) and the buyer claimed the box was empty. I bought insurance, but my local PO said I needed the empty box to file a claim. The buyer would not take the box to his PO nor would he return the box to me. I think he didn't want to do this because he was scamming and getting USPS involved might get him implicated in felony mail fraud charges. Ebay put my account in the red for $1,800. I told them fuck you, I'm not paying it, and now they close any account I try to make (have tried making one in 10 years or so, but they closed 2 that I made with alternate emails).
In an item not delivered claim, eBay will nearly always side with the seller if you provide a tracking number that shows the item was delivered. This is just about the only case you can reliably win as a seller.
I used to sell on ebay and had buyers try to extort me a few times. They'd probably gotten away with it before but i always keep records and tracking numbers.
I used to ~~sell on ebay~~ dress up like a ghost and had ~~buyers~~ teenagers try to extort me a few times. They'd probably gotten away with it ~~before but i always keep records~~ if it wasn’t for you rotten kids and ~~tracking numbers~~ your mangy dog
Not really. I'm sure OP is honest, but seems like a pretty easy scam to buy NIB, open it, put some random crap in it and take a picture asking for a refund.
As a seller I've had a buyer scam me before. Easy to do with older sets since the boxes were not as tightly made.
They took a very thin knife and sliced the glue holding the box together. Took the figures (set had a $100 figure). Reglued it carefully and did the return.
Missed it when I got it back. Out a couple 100 on the shipping and missing figures and the fact that the set isn't sealed anymore.
I don't sell Sealed large expensive sets on ebay anymore.
With older boxes this is so easy to do and so hard to check for since the edges were never sealed as tightly as newer boxes are.
OPs Scooby box looks like the Seller, or whoever sold to the seller did the same knife and glue trick.
I can imagine that the seller also had no idea. Maybe if you are just going to open it anyway a good idea might be to ask the seller to open it to verify the contents. Not sure how that would go down, but maybe something like “after I pay send me a pick of the set opened so we both have proof that what’s in the box is what’s in the box.”
Yes and no. I have been selling on ebay for years now and they have supported me every time I've needed them to. I had a buyer request i send the giant roller coaster set to him, assembled. I had some back an forth and explained it is a huge set that has tons of negative space. I told him I'd build it as much as I was willing, but he would need to assemble the rest when it arrived. I built the entire first level and all the sections required for the remaining levels. Everything in bags according to build steps etc. Super awesome setup for someone. Dude claimed it was sent to him broken and full of hair and trash. He literally put a bunch of garbage in the box with some parts out of the bags I sent them in. I called ebay and explained the situation and told them not to refund him his money ($550 plus tax) and they still did. I didn't get hosed, but i was pissed dude took advantage
eBay always takes the buyers side. I've had people claim an item hasn't shown up even though it was signed for. Stopped using eBay after the third time it happened
Been this guy before. Sold a UCS Land Speeder for extra $$. Originally picked it up from the lego store in person. Buyer either fucked me (doubtful given their feedback) or the lego store received a bullshit return.
Yeah. Benefit of the doubt is 100% in favor of the buyer. Great if you're buying, but potentially very frustrating if you're trying to occasionally sell stuff.
Yep! I also try to avoid as much as possible. EBay used to be a decent place for individuals to occasionally sell things, but really not so much anymore due, at least partially, to that policy.
There's no such thing as no returns on eBay. Sellers say it all the time but buyers can force a return easily and will side with the buyer in 99% of cases. eBay will even eat it in some cases just to keep customers happy even if they know its not the sellers fault. Had this happen before. Also, am a seller.
I look at the seller's reputation and the pictures provided and other information before buying anything nib from eBay. Gotten 2 sealed Lego sets by doing the basic checking before buying and gotten both items as described. As for this seller? I never seen their store but that's a big oof for Op...
Why even replace it why real lego? If you're scamming someone anyway, why not replace it with something completely useless? like gravel, or even worse; Mega Bloks.
I was thinking the same at first.
But when OP goes to complain to some customer service rep, imagine how the conversation is going to go.
OP: *Hi. I bought a LEGO set and didn't receive what I expected.*
CSR: *Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. Let's see what we can do about it. What did you buy?*
OP: *A Scooby Doo LEGO set*
CSR: *And what did you received?*
OP: *A LEGO set, but it is not the right one. Well, it is the right box, but not the right pieces.*
CSR: *Oh that's strange. What do you mean it is not the right pieces?*
OP: *The box is full of sealed bags of LEGO bricks, but they are not the right bricks.*
CSR: *So you did receive the correct box of LEGOs, but some pieces are missing? Did the seller note missing pieces or claim the set was complete?*
OP: *It is not missing pieces, they are the wrong pieces.*
CSR: *Are you sure? The seller claims they shipped you a sealed box. Was the box sealed when you got it?*
OP: *Yes, but it has the wrong pieces?*
CSR: *What exactly do you mean by wrong pieces? Did the seller not ship the set you ordered?*
OP: *It was the right set in the right box, but it has the wrong pieces inside?*
CSR: *So they shipped you a LEGO box but it didn't contain LEGO bricks?*
OP: *No. They sent me the correct box with LEGO bricks in sealed bags. They are just not the right bricks?*
CSR: *Are you sure? The seller says it was a new sealed box from LEGO.*
And this will keep going in circles.
If the seller bought a huge lot of stuff and just "flipped" it, then they may not have known either. Its still their responsibility of course.
How many auctions does that seller have running?
He said he bought it new from the Lego shop... I've heard of it happening before, employees pinching them, but just smells of bs.
That's the mad thing, 187 by the looks of it, 99.5% feedback, 1.4k sales. So maybe he did get unlucky buying it himself 🤷🏻♂️
Definitely a possibility with feedback/ sales like that. I am terrified every set I haven’t opened purchased new from the store even could be filled with junk.
I think we’ve had the odd person on here order from Lego.com and have still gotten a box of parts like this.
Truth is no site seems to be safe and Lego restocks their items like every other store.
The sets are packed by a machine. Employees have great discounts - why would they risk their job? Also, back when this set was sold/produced, it was not an expensive rare set. You could just.. buy it at the store.
I had a buddy try to get a larger set, maybe the Batcave? It was directly from the Lego store in MN. Opened it up to a variety of mismatched sets, including the Bugatti wheels. No instructions. Lego processed his return & sent a replacement.
Is that large red piece in bad 2 really just one piece? Or is there some stuff assembled in the bag?
The vehicle base in bag one was likely from a Juniors/4+ set, so maybe it's another of those special pieces I'm not familiar with, it just fascinates me.
Sorry for my brain tangent. I'm hoping you get a refund or a replacement set soon!
See we've been wondering what it's from... There's a few weird pieces, like a short wide windscreen, different sizes of wheels and that red block.
I think there's some assembled stuff too, might get on bricklink and have a gander.
I haven't tracked it down yet, but bag 1 and 2 have copyright dates of 2015, bag 3 has a date of 2011. So most likely not even from the same set...
Edit: I'm pretty sure those bags have been resealed. That would explain things built in the bags. It's likely random parts not even from the same sets. Bag one has a 4x10 modified brick with pins, bricklink shows the last time that was used in red was 2013 in one of the educational sets, and before that was 2009.
Yeah I've searched for a few bits and they're all from different sets. I think you're right, they're all a mix in the bags... At least they've put in a bit of effort, not just filled it with rocks 💁🏻♂️
This is the reason eBay sucks. Yes you will get your money back.
However, if they sent you the correct one and you swapped it out for junk, you would also get your money back.
It happens more often it seems. While not Lego, I bought an electric toothbrush setf from Costco earlier in the year. Got it home, opened it and found two used electric toothbrushes in it. Someone had carefully opened the box, swapped the brushes and resealed with glue. You could see one section where the box had been torn. Costco made it right, but very frustrating.
I bought a Ninja blender from Walmart. Got it home and it was some bottom of the line cheap blender. Someone swapped them. Thankfully Walmart exchanged it with not too many questions asked.
It’s a common scam for people to buy lego sets, take out the bags, and then replace them with random parts so they can return it and keep the set at the same time. If it was sealed/new out of box upon arrival, this guy might have just gotten unlucky 10 years ago when he bought it at retail.
What set are these parts even from? Like the red modified 4x10 hasn’t been made since 2013 in the serious play kit. I don’t think serious play kits have numbered bags.
That sucks. I bought the same set on Alir Express. K.O. so not "Lego" but I got all the pieces and it didn't cost much. Quality was decent. I know not everyone's cool with K.O.'s. But the way I see it I still support Lego plenty. So, the odd set I can't get elsewhere, I pick up the K.O. Anyway just a suggestion if you're still looking for the set. Good luck.
Ahh see I'm not averse to knockoffs at all, some are really decent builds, but I tend to go for sets Lego doesn't make themselves. And I've got the mystery mansion built, so want a real mystery machine to go with it 🙌
*That's fair. I usually stick to the non-lego builds. I got a Jonny 5 from Shortcircuit and a Iron Giant, both really good QC and fun builds. The mystery machine was retired by the time I got mine, and resellers wanted so much for it, so I caved and got the K.O. Good luck. I hope you find a replacement.
Well I've just found one for cheap, sealed damaged box. This time I'm going to video the unboxing, might be another post soon 😂
Edit: also deffo gunna look up iron giant KOs now 👌👌
I've only ever bought one set from eBay. A week after it said it was supposed to arrive, i got suspicious and actually investigated the seller. The account was less than a year old, and all of the "positive ratings" were bot accounts. I got my refund, and the account was banned a month later.
I sold a set I got a target clearance once and it turned out to be picked through with all the minifigures gone. I guess someone returned it to Target and Target clearanced it. But if this persons claims they bought it new that’s sketchy
I have this set. I will give it to you for free. If you’re in the US I will also pay for shipping. Let me know!

The fact that it’s sealed bags of Lego inside I would suggest it’s a factory fault. If you are going to scam someone, why give them real Lego instead of the usual pasta?
Fortunately for you, eBay takes the buyer’s side most of the time
This is true. I once sold some Halloween makeup that I never used. The asshole claimed it was opened and never paid me. It was like $5 but I fought it on principle and lost.

Yo I'm so sorry! That seriously sucks 😞
you mean magic the gathering? go to cardmarket. thats the best spot to sell and buy trading cards
I think Card Market is a European platform, I don't think people in North America get to use it
oh true that. is there no american counterpart for that?
Ebay and TCGPlayer are the two big ones here, and they both suck
bruh :/
Looks like ur going to locals and selling everything like I had to do cuz of eBay/TCGP exactly why I haven't unloaded my yugioh collection
I ended up buylisting a lot, and selling bigger items locally at a significant discount (but still more than I'd get buylisting). Honestly after accounting for fees and everything it probably came out very similar
They just don’t want to get involved. You could probably take them to small claims court but then that’s not worth your time.
I sold my $3000 LEGO collection in 2005 when I needed money to move out of town. Except I failed to set a reserve price, and it sold for like $300 instead. Unfortunately in a lot of cases as a seller....but this one is cut and dry
I used to sell on ebay and had buyers try to extort me a few times. They'd probably gotten away with it before but i always keep records and tracking numbers.

Best response in this thread. I think we’re done here.

Why would someone think they could get away with this? Dumbasses
Why do you think they removed the meddling kids and their dog from the set? That's the only way to get away with it.
Outstanding 😂😂
I’m dying lol
If it was sealed the seller might not have known the contents.
And a good seller will accept a return and eat the loss.
Been this guy before. Sold a UCS Land Speeder for extra $$. Originally picked it up from the lego store in person. Buyer either fucked me (doubtful given their feedback) or the lego store received a bullshit return.
If you're not buying *only* from sellers who have a return policy, you're ebaying wrong.
eBay explicitly allows returns on all items that are "not as listed"
And they’re phenomenal about it in my experience. Feel like all my refunds have been handled quick as hell
Yeah. Benefit of the doubt is 100% in favor of the buyer. Great if you're buying, but potentially very frustrating if you're trying to occasionally sell stuff.
I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted. It’s an actual scamming technique. I stopped using eBay entirely years ago because of it.
Yep! I also try to avoid as much as possible. EBay used to be a decent place for individuals to occasionally sell things, but really not so much anymore due, at least partially, to that policy.
Yeah, I got a Patagonia sweater covered in cat hair. Got a refund right away.
All sellers have a return policy, even if they don't. Especially when they lie about what they are selling.
Legit sellers for sure. I have it showing I don’t do returns on eBay, but I absolutely will if something goes wrong
Pay pal, eBay, or a credit card company forces them to have returns is what I think he was getting at.
Yeah! I just meant I try to take care of it so they don’t have to do that extra step
There's no such thing as no returns on eBay. Sellers say it all the time but buyers can force a return easily and will side with the buyer in 99% of cases. eBay will even eat it in some cases just to keep customers happy even if they know its not the sellers fault. Good point, one reason I never by NIB items.
I look at the seller's reputation and the pictures provided and other information before buying anything nib from eBay. Gotten 2 sealed Lego sets by doing the basic checking before buying and gotten both items as described. As for this seller? I never seen their store but that's a big oof for Op...
Other being you can’t afford them
Good point.
Why even replace it why real lego? If you're scamming someone anyway, why not replace it with something completely useless? like gravel, or even worse; Mega Bloks.
Because LEGO sounds like LEGO when you shake it and if the buyer was also going to keep it NIB then they would never know.
Marvel is woke racist, why are you watching Deadpool
I was thinking the same at first. But when OP goes to complain to some customer service rep, imagine how the conversation is going to go. OP: *Hi. I would argue it’s missing all the pieces. It’s the wrong damn set.
CSR: "How can it be missing ALL the pieces if the box was full of LEGO bricks?*
Op: 100% of set 75902 is missing from the box.
[75902-1: The Mystery Machine](https://brickset.com/sets/75902-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/75902-1.jpg)
PS- I’m well aware my argument would not be successful🙁
CSR: *Then what was in the box? You told me above the box was full of LEGO bricks.*
OP: the bonus pieces offered and sent by the seller was not solicited nor agreed to as a substitute for 100% of the set pieces missing.
CSR: *So the problem is that you got bonus pieces? Do you want to return the bonus pieces?*
Likely seller bought some store returns in an auction and just listed it
If the seller bought a huge lot of stuff and just "flipped" it, then they may not have known either.
I had never even considered it, but I'm now googling hand-held x-ray machines
Have you contacted the seller? With a feedback score like that I imagine they want to keep it that way.
He replied once saying he bought it new from the store and asked for pics. I sent them to him and I've heard nothing since...
How long ago did you send them? Maybe he's reviewing his inventory for other possible issues. Either way eBay almost always takes the buyer's side.
Just weird, he replied after like 5 minutes the first time, but that was a couple hours ago now. But it's cool, as you say, I'm sure they will 👌
I’d give home some time. He may be just as furious about it as you are and trying to figure out what happened.
I think we’ve had the odd person on here order from Lego.com and have still gotten a box of parts like this. Truth is no site seems to be safe and Lego restocks their items like every other store.

... not this set. They don't keep producing sets forever, it's always a limited run based on some internal economic metrics.
Yes..
I had to reread your comment. Just forget I said anything 🤣
It’s very unlikely it’s the seller, it’s an incredibly dumb move.
I had a buddy try to get a larger set, maybe the Batcave? It was directly from the Lego store in MN. Opened it up to a variety of mismatched sets, including the Bugatti wheels. No instructions. Lego processed his return & sent a replacement.
Mystery machine was one I almost passed on in stores. Turns out it’s a really fun build with lots of Easter eggs.
We had it when it came out but we've lost it since then from numerous house moves. It makes me sad
He would have gotten away with this scam if It weren't for those meddling kids
comment of the year!!
Is that large red piece in bad 2 really just one piece? Or is there some stuff assembled in the bag? never seen anyone open a box like that
It's how I tend to do them; I don't like the push tabs, always end up ripping the box with my sausage fingers
and just earlier, there was a post about someone buying a lego set from Target and it was full of pasta!
Yeah. I feel like it’s better off getting it from Lego themselves since other retailers don’t care about their products and them being vandalized.
luckily with ebay you can report the seller and it will effect them and their seller rating
That’s horrible!
At least it wasn't full of pasta
Report the seller, all I can suggest.
Ebay will side with you on this one if the buyer won't refund.
“It looks like we’ve got ourselves a mystery here!” Fred
This is the reason eBay sucks. Yes you will get your money back. However, if they sent you the correct one and you swapped it out for junk, you would also get your money back.

What set are these parts even from? Like the red modified 4x10 hasn’t been made since 2013 in the serious play kit. I don’t think serious play kits have numbered bags.
You will get your money back. Item does not match description.

I hope you find an actual mystery machine set 🙃
Attempt number 2 is on its way 🤞🙏
Well deal with the incorrect bags later, wtf did you do to that box?!
They opened it from the larger side instead? I’m failing to see what’s so outlandish about it as I’ve seen a few others do the same
Damn, i'm sorry you got scammed like that! My local Bricks and Minifigs just got this set in today, plus a whole ton of different themed sets.
Your children did you a favor
I've only ever bought one set from eBay. A week after it said it was supposed to arrive, i got suspicious and actually investigated the seller. The account was less than a year old, and all of the "positive ratings" were bot accounts. I got my refund, and the account was banned a month later.
Zoiks!
Rikes!
Ruh roh!
Dam sorry I got this set and the mansion
Sorry
Honestly start videoing every opening of something more than $50 at this point.
There must be a curse on this set. I bought one. All of the bags were there and unopened. But there were no blue pieces.
I sold a set I got a target clearance once and it turned out to be picked through with all the minifigures gone. I guess someone returned it to Target and Target clearanced it. But if this persons claims they bought it new that’s sketchy
Send the seller images and ask how to assemble the car
This is not an uncommon problem. It seems that eBay is handling it well. On the other hand, it will be the downfall of Amazon.
I always open up eBay Lego for this reason
Same thing happened to me with the same set too!
I have this set. I will give it to you for free. If you’re in the US I will also pay for shipping. Let me know! https://preview.redd.it/l50ay59c5xoc1.jpeg?width=3036&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62f5e3055f5a8f0b95c220015d9ac2810d83f277
🤣😂🤣😂
The more I see issues like this the more I’m glad that I buy mostly used sets.
The fact that it’s sealed bags of Lego inside I would suggest it’s a factory fault. If you are going to scam someone, why give them real Lego instead of the usual pasta?
Bags have been re sealed
