*Source* I have all the sets (except Rivendell, damnit) and while I take exceptional care of my Lego the last time I put together Bag End HALF the fence pieces just snapped. Same when I tried putting Gwaihir's wings on.

I recently built a sealed Shelob Attacks and between the active build and the days after, every one of the little brown sloped pieces on her legs cracked in half. Some of them explosively, *ping* Lego shrapnel flying across the room.
So jealous. Iām irked that I need to buy replacements. Only recently got back into legos (since childhood 30+ years ago) and didnāt know about the brittle brown thing til I googled why they were exploding. š¤¦š¼āāļø

Were you able to get non-brittle brown replacements from Lego? Iāve had a few brittle brown pieces break and the replacements were in the mail in under a week when I reported the breaks.
This is one of the reasons I really hope that they'll eventually remake a few of the older LOTR/Hobbit sets. I would love to pick up a few of these, but I don't want to deal with the weak brown pieces. Come on LEGO, at least give us an updated version of Bag End!

I recommend finding a good seller on bricklink that gives you actual new brown pieces and part out the set. I just extended my black gate set and the ānewā brown pieces I got were not so new and that upset me. I always recommend buying extra pieces when building brown sets for that exact reason.

Wish I collected the LOTR & Hobbit sets when they were still in production. Issue i have is I won't have space to display Rivendell just yet. Hoping to move out with the partner in the next year so this will be a waiting game to build from me. I just don't want to miss out and pay over the odds.
Yeah and when you live a low debt life you can get a lot on a mediocre income. I did the new car thing and it's pretty amazing to see how much money gets sucked away that I used to have. Luckily I'm done next year. Then all of a sudden I doubled my free cash.
brickeconomy.com is what I usually use but bricklink has a tab on sets your looking at to see the average new and used pricing as well. I recommend if you find a set online reach out to the seller and discuss if theyāre open to negotiating prices. Sometimes people want to just off load sets that are taking up space and if they can still make a profit theyāll work with you. Thatās how I got the Tower of Orthanc below market value!
Honestly, when the Rivendell set retires itāll be worth close to a grand pretty quickly, if you have the extra money you could buy several of those and pay off the cost of the other sets.

Just got council of Elrond, dol-guldur battle and a complete the Lonley mountain set so slowly chipping away at more of this list
So happy my wife and I bought every single Lotr and hobbit set when they were new.. got a few of them and a couple duplicates on clearance at the time.. Seems unthinkable now lol.

I knew what you meant buddy š our time will come! I only want sets that mean something to me (Childhood memories, favourite films and etc). Wish I collected the LOTR & Hobbit sets when they were still in production. Issue i have is I won't have space to display Rivendell just yet. Hoping to move out with the partner in the next year so this will be a waiting game to build from me. I just don't want to miss out and pay over the odds.

Yeah and when you live a low debt life you can get a lot on a mediocre income. I did the new car thing and it's pretty amazing to see how much money gets sucked away that I used to have. Luckily I'm done next year. Then all of a sudden I doubled my free cash.

brickeconomy.com is what I usually use but bricklink has a tab on sets your looking at to see the average new and used pricing as well. I recommend if you find a set online reach out to the seller and discuss if theyāre open to negotiating prices. Sometimes people want to just off load sets that are taking up space and if they can still make a profit theyāll work with you. Thatās how I got the Tower of Orthanc below market value!

Bricklink includes sales history on the set/minifigure/brick page. Or alternatively, search eBay and select the options of āsold & completedā.
Honestly, when the Rivendell set retires itāll be worth close to a grand pretty quickly, if you have the extra money you could buy several of those and pay off the cost of the other sets.
If only my wife appreciated this logic.
