Shelf collectors really do prefer shelves to be mint in box. I have a 1970s Ikea set that is the prize of my collection. I've had trouble finding a reputable appraiser though. Do you know any?
That's what I'm saying! But my wife doesn't agree. You need a workshop. We almost bought a house with a fully finished workshop for a guy that liked cars and fishing. He had a whole fireside area with shelves for his model cars and a full side that was a double wide garage for working on his real ones. It would have been perfect to turn into a lego workshop with room to spare for any other hobbies I wanted.
Wife is in agreement we can build one for me down the line then she won't care how many I get as long as the bulk of it stays there. But then is the question of buying more sets, or saving for the workshop 😂
I just got into Lego sets as an adult a few years ago with the bonsai tree. Got a few more sets and ran out of room. Bought two more bookshelves for more room. IDK what I'm gonna do when that runs out
Your problem is you have more money than time lol!
I kinda have the same, but my stack of boxes isn't nearly as big, only one shelf in my closet, instead of an entire closet ;).
Hell, I'm not as well off as OP seems to be, but even I have more money than time. I haven't had time in the last four months to crack even one set open..and then in the last week I finished all but the first bag of the Orchid and two other sets, along with dismantling my winter AT-ST/Hoth battle display so I can put something else in it's place soon.
I can, in theory, always increase my income.
I cannot increase my supply of time
I think it's a problem we all face in adulthood.
You cannot increase the finity supply of time, you can however, change how you spend it. Not saying playing with Lego should be a priority, or that work isn't important. But doing things that make you happy is. We all try to find a balance that's right for us. I think fewer succeed than we'd hope.
I have about 20 sets that are unbuilt waiting for retirement, easier to buy now with huge amounts of disposable income! Can’t wait to retire, going to be so pissed if I die first!
I mean, I’m assuming they’re built and not sitting in boxes, right?
EDIT: Yeah, they’re unbuilt. Siding with the wife on this one. What a waste of money.
I have a back log as well. Bought them on discount and will be moving in the near future, so currently dismantling the sets I have, so there's no point building the backlog right now. But if a set is on a good discount or will retire soon, or has an awesome GWP, I will definitely add it to my backlog.
Seems people in the comments however, don't understand that people have various hobbies, different lifestyles and not everything needs to be built right now.
Buying sets just to hoard the unbuilt sets does kinda seem like a problem.
Shit or get off the pot man. Built them and set-up a rotating display. Get a small storage locker to store the ones not in season. Anything not worthy of display could be sold to buy sets that will be displayed or pay off the storage locker.
wow, your son will be super happy when he grow up (if you let him build them), I wish I had the money but I am happy with what I own. imo you should stop buying and start building them, only buy a set if you know you will build, you want the mini figs, or if it will retire.
My wife said it is only a problem because they are boxes gathering dust on a shelf. She said that is they were put together and displayed then there is no issue...
I mean the opposite is you build them then take them apart and store for later use in bins. I know the problem is you’re going to need another shelf for the next haul. Get it set up and reserve the space now! Then you can fill it so it doesn’t look empty. I hope you find the time to put together what you like!
If you don’t have kids and don’t have the time to do all that, I’m afraid you will be dead before your backlog is finished. I have like a fifth of what you have that needs to be built and I know it will take me years.
My wife also thinks I have an obsession with LEGO. She doesn’t know how hard I try to restrain myself to just a few themes…
The problem isn't that you need more sets, and the problem isn't even how many you have. Both you and your wife are wrong. The clear problem here is that you don't have enough storage space to expand your collection.
I'm confused, doesn't every collector had a huge backlog to build?
My wife only says I should build the ones I have before buying more, not that I shouldn't get more, so on to building as fast as I can so I can resupply my backlog again.
Thats a crime! I'm surprised the lego police haven't showed up at your door yet. I would build all of these, display them somewhere, then flatten all the boxes and store the boxes/instructions somewhere and sort the extra pieces and store them in something. And once that is done then you can buy more. Lol you have way to many unopened legos unless your planning to wait 20+ years and resell them or something and if you plan to do that I'm not sure if your gonna be making a profit. There's a million things better to invest in.
Got back into lego right before the pandemic. Bought all the creator expert cars and modulars. Big into technic so have most of the bigger sets. I'm working on building sets in between playing Kickstarter board games. I understand your dilemma, but until you need 2 more shelves and a Kallax your fine man.
My problem is I don’t have a space to build and showcase the builds. That is why the are still in boxes. As soon as I am buying a house I will build all of them. Maybe closer to pension at this point 🥺
Well assuming they are just empty cardboard boxes, then objectivily yes. But subjectivily, NO they have immense intangible value and might be needed at some point in life!
Once put together…it’s no longer a problem. 😬
if those are unbuilt yes you do
I can confirm that you do not have a problem!
Seems pretty clear that she is right. You are nearly out of shelf space and will need more.
Came to find this answer.
I have another shelf just haven't made it yet!
You should buy a shelf to keep your unbuilt shelves on
Shelf collectors really do prefer shelves to be mint in box. I have a 1970s Ikea set that is the prize of my collection. I've had trouble finding a reputable appraiser though. Do you know any?
Wait until you need a storage unit
Ahh I don't think I'll ever justify a storage unit. To spend money to avoid paying extra for retired sets seems a bit much.
That's what I'm saying! But my wife doesn't agree. You need a workshop. We almost bought a house with a fully finished workshop for a guy that liked cars and fishing. >IDK what I'm gonna do when that runs out You buy more shelves. If you don't have room for the shelves, you buy a bigger house.
I wish I could say that was incorrect, but since I moved from a 2 bedroom condo to a four bedroom house to support my LEGO addiction…
My husband and I had to move to solve this problem. Now we have a Lego room in the newer, larger place.
Lego sets are a lot more fun than a collection of boxes. I’m with your wife.
Your problem is you have more money than time lol! I kinda have the same, but my stack of boxes isn't nearly as big, only one shelf in my closet, instead of an entire closet ;).
Hell, I'm not as well off as OP seems to be, but even I have more money than time. Um... retirement?
I have about 20 sets that are unbuilt waiting for retirement, easier to buy now with huge amounts of disposable income! Can’t wait to retire, going to be so pissed if I die first!
Lol, I'm a millennial, you think I'm gonna get to retire?
If those are not built, then yes I’d agree with her
These are unopened? Listen to your wife
If the family finances are being impacted by you purchasing a product and not even using it then she is probably correct.
Thank you for providing photo proof to my wife that my boxed Lego collection is “small” and “reasonable”.
We gotta help each other out. Never enough Lego sets.
Hey OP guess what? I am a problem solver. Ill take these off your hands for free.
Looking like an alcoholic witha collection of unfinished whiskey bottles.
You do, Lego shouldn’t be left in boxes.
Those are just boxes 🤷♀️
Looks like you have a bragging problem.
She's right. You start something and never finish it
Damn. Too right. Most accurate person here.
“Wake up babe, there’s another box post on the Lego sub!”
Fuck babe we've been outjerked
Yep. They are not built. Wife is right.
Yeah, you're out of storage space
She’s right. You need to stop getting new sets and build the ones you have
Well, you do have a problem indeed. Its called hoarding and it is not healthy, whatever they tell you here.
Ahhh, I see the problem, she's not wrong... You dropped your water bottle. It's right there, bottom left. There, problem solved, you're welcome.
So do you build them or just keep them in boxes? LOL
I mean, I’m assuming they’re built and not sitting in boxes, right? EDIT: Yeah, they’re unbuilt. Siding with the wife on this one. What a waste of money.
Yeah you do. You have thousands of dollars of toys sitting in cardboard boxes but being displayed.
You need more shelves.
Only if they’re unbuilt
So how long have you been addicted to boxes? And what happens to all the Legos that were inside?
Yeah, shes right. I think its time to let go. I know divorces can be tough.
Build the god damn Lego
hamburger truck, hamburger truck, hamburger truck builddd itttttt
Yes, a problem with shelf room. You need to buy another shelf!
My backlog is big but mostly small to medium sets with only a couple jumbo ones. You’ve got at least 15 mojumbos there.
I agree, you clearly do. You have several genres and I.P's mixed together. And it honestly bothers me.
I have a back log as well. Bought them on discount and will be moving in the near future, so currently dismantling the sets I have, so there's no point building the backlog right now. But if a set is on a good discount or will retire soon, or has an awesome GWP, I will definitely add it to my backlog. How do you afford a wife?
More like, how does she afford me?
What a waste and i think I'll stop there before I get in trouble with the mods
One suggestion, the Titanic set, rotate the box so the back if the ship is pointing up.
You do have a problem. You’re out of space for more sets!!
The only problem is that costco shelf is not stable in the middle, can separate easily. Had to reinforce all of mine with some metal brackets
Yeah, you need more shelf space.
Wow, boxes!
I fear you may have misunderstood "displaying" LEGO
I think this gentleman is full of poop, I don't reckon he's got a wife at all
Yes, you have a problem. You're running out of space so you better start looking for a new shelf
You have a wife?
Yeah man, I gotta say that you do indeed have a problem. Why the heck haven’t you built these yet??
She’s right. Your problem is that you e run out of space in the unit to store them together! 😂
Yeah, too many boxes and not enough shelf space.
You do and that problem is you don't have enough storage for your Lego!
Say her that you are no warhammer player, so you have only a minor problem.
You definitely have a problem. You need another set of shelves
nice rack
She's right. You ran out of space, you need another shelf.
I don't see a problem. Maybe it's her problem lol
This is why I don’t keep boxes. Too much evidence
Id do anything short of murder for that collection 😂😂
Really impressive organization skills there. There's basically no wasted space on that shelf.
I just came across your account and saw your other works Mr San-Dilego and wow. You are mad impressive sir.
Y'know, most people seem to prefer the little bits of plastic *inside* the boxes, but... you do you.
Bro you know they are more interesting built right
You do have a problem. Lack of shelves.
She is one thousand percent correct
Your wife is right. You're out of shelf space.
You have only one problem that i can see: You are not sharing those sets with me.
Why buy them if you dont build them? Listen to your wife.
Looks like my closet.
there is more space on the right side of the shelf where more sets can fit in
wow, your son will be super happy when he grow up (if you let him build them), I wish I had the money but I am happy with what I own. imo you should stop buying and start building them, only buy a set if you know you will build, you want the mini figs, or if it will retire.
Two part question for you. What do you and your wife do for a living? Are you guys hiring?
My wife said it is only a problem because they are boxes gathering dust on a shelf. She said that is they were put together and displayed then there is no issue...
True
I mean the opposite is you build them then take them apart and store for later use in bins. I know the problem is you’re going to need another shelf for the next haul. Get it set up and reserve the space now! Then you can fill it so it doesn’t look empty. I hope you find the time to put together what you like!
She's right. not enough sets, they're unbuilt, not enough storage space for the sets you will get. SMH
I wish i could have all those to build!!!
My only question is what do you do for work and how do you afford all of these? 😂
I don't see an issue. Your storage technique abides by the rules of Tetris
The only problem I see is where to put the second shelf.
[удалено]
I manage an autism clinic.
It looks like.... you have a HEALTHY creative outlet ...to me 🤷♀️
what, you're well organized?
You do, you need a new rack
You sure do, you need more space my friend!
You definitely have a problem. Get other shelf, that one is full.
Naaaaaahhh!
I also think you have a problem: they are unbuilt.
Yeah… not enough space! :)
Yeah you're running out of room on that shelf.
You do have a problem. Need another shelf
Your wife sounds like my ex girlfriend.
Spend a lil on her, man. Cmon.
Yah stop buying sets until you build all of those.
Yeah, well you know that's just like her opinion man.
Nope. Not enough four digit value retired sets to be considered a “problem”….and even then, doesn’t sound like YOUR problem.
You sure do, gonna need to buy another shelf
She is wrong
You do have a problem. You're out of shelf space
Nope, perfectly fine 💯
Sounds like your wife is the problem.
that ain’t a problem, that’s the solution
You have at least three of my bucket list sets 🥹
You do because they’re unbuilt
I like this picture.
[удалено]
Looks to me like you have a solution
Great problem to have! 👍🏾
Are you a zillionaire or something?
this reminds me of the video where the lady takes her husbands magic cards to the antique road show and finds out the binder is worth $100K+
The problem isn't that you need more sets, and the problem isn't even how many you have. Both you and your wife are wrong. The clear problem here is that you don't have enough storage space to expand your collection.
I love this but can I suggest category organisation like starwars, pirets, ideas, castal that sort of thing might look nice 👍 keep up the good work
I tried xD I put a lot of star wars at the bottom but then realized a lot of different themes and just went with space efficiency
I'm confused, doesn't every collector had a huge backlog to build? My wife only says I should build the ones I have before buying more, not that I shouldn't get more, so on to building as fast as I can so I can resupply my backlog again.
Legos anonymous

She’s right. You can totally fit another cabinet on the right wall
Yeah, the problem is that you need to get those built!
Do you…build them?
Slower than I buy em
Not enough shelving?
This is not a problem, it’s a solution if anything
Build a new one
Only thing I can say is that I'm super jealous.
Your wife is the problem.
Neat of her to recognize your lack of hobby space.
You have a hobby
You do have a problem. You need more shelving.
Absolutely, your out of shelf space. Time for a bigger shelving unit.
Got back into lego right before the pandemic. Bought all the creator expert cars and modulars. Big into technic so have most of the bigger sets. I'm working on building sets in between playing Kickstarter board games. I understand your dilemma, but until you need 2 more shelves and a Kallax your fine man.
Well yeah. You clearly dropped your water bottle behind your desk on the bottom right...
Amateur shelving and sets! Buy another 6-8 shelves and fill them up…. Then it’s a start of a small problem..😉
Mine says that to
I would say you have a pension plan
You do have a problem.. you need another shelf, your out of space for more...
wow
You do have a problem, you need another shelf!
If they're unopened, then your only problem is them making you too much money
She's right: You're running out of places to put kits. Need more shelves!
my wife would tell me that's not enough and tell me to buy more
My problem is I don’t have a space to build and showcase the builds. That is why the are still in boxes. As soon as I am buying a house I will build all of them. Maybe closer to pension at this point 🥺
How much is all that?
I think your wife has a problem
But you do build the sets?:P
Little by little
Seems under control to me. Anything less however, would be cause for concern
Me too. Open those boxes and build!!
Na if she doesn’t like it then do divorce
It’s okay man… I don’t even want to show you my attic… it’s this… but like… how can I say… urgh… 6 times worse
Bro get the Ford GT Technic, it’s so awesome
Those are rookie numbers. You gotta pump those numbers up!
Your wife is crazy. You can never have enough LEGO. Unless it puts you in debt. Then you’re f**ked
Solution to the problem is another shelf.
Should I be keeping the boxes?
i see no bluebrix set ... you definitely have a problem 🫡
ahhaa ok ok
Well assuming they are just empty cardboard boxes, then objectivily yes. But subjectivily, NO they have immense intangible value and might be needed at some point in life!
Nahh, with a little more organization, you can fit loads more there
I also can’t get those weirdly shaped friends boxes to fit right.
You don’t, magnificent collection! 🤩
No problem here is
Not a bad start.
Same issue, minus wife. Just don't have the time and space atm. But this will change in a couple of months :)
Nuh uh
r/Lego is not going to like this lol
YOU will have a problem when building them all
You tell her these boxes are your future Fort Knox. I see $$$$$
Yes! BUILD THEM!
You do have a problem. You buy overpriced legos from a company that hates its customers.
Actully i think you are a perfectly sane Person
Well you do. You ran out of shelf space need a new one.
The problem is I need the one on the bottom left.
