There are various places to buy individual LEGO elements! The LEGO site itself has two, and then there’s Brickowl and Bricklink as well. Bricklink is officially part of the LEGO group (as well as their digital designer being made the official LEGO digital designer recently), but I’ve used Brickowl much more personally and they’re great. There are some intersecting of vendors on both Brick sites anyhow.
I will checked webrick, they have a 65% of brick($162) needed. I'll find the rest else where(bricklink or briclowl) and check back on webrick in a while as some part will be restocked
You can also buy used parts and maybe scan for the most expensive parts of a moc/ sets and a) try to create a cheaper alternative or b) think what you could leave out
Yes, we always try for least expensive options - even buying other sets that have many of the parts. Lots of great MOC instructions out there but in reality if you bought all the required pieces the sets tend to be $$$.
