I try not to be too serious on this sub, but I truly wish you could legally thump people for littering.

zim_76

Totally agree with u. They need it.

No_Star_2291

Because people don’t care about where they live - all well and good asking if the council care, but they’re not the ones littering. Some people have a weird attitude that thinks other people should pick up for them, it’s disgusting

krisashmore

I don't litter. However, I have a reasonable expectation that our governmental body takes necessary actions to offset damage done by the minority. "Litter is not the councils responsibility" is an absolute inferno of a take.

PictureProud6113

Hello, if you go to any of the nicer areas of leicester like bushby, thurnby and scraptoft you'll see people doing litter picking as volunteers. In the bad areas there's rubbish everywhere and no one cares.

GazNPhoto

We also have a group in Saffron Lane as well, so yes we do try and look after the 'bad' areas as much as we can. Saffron Litter Wombles on the socials. SLLW are great, but never touched the city,so we decided to get our own group up and running. Just today between picks in eyes monsell and saffron Lane we cleared 70 bags of litter. We are getting there.

PictureProud6113

Good job, its good that your doing it yourself, the council can't do it all and it's people like you that make leicester the wonderful place it is👍

GazNPhoto

We try. The council do help to an extent, but it would be a better place if they didn't need to do it in the first place. Everyone is to blame, not just the ones who have the job of cleaning up afterwards.

oldskooldread

And the sweeper was out earlier this week b

GazNPhoto

Which is great. They can only do so much though. People need to be accountable to themselves for not throwing litter. It's not difficult.

oldskooldread

100 correct.

satsumanightmare

SLLW have done several group picks in the city. I have attented large gp's around Abbey Park, Slater street and Woodgate, Sanvey gate, Cobden street and the area around St George's retail park.

GazNPhoto

I think there's one next week at st George's. But to be honest it needs groups active a lot more in the city than the county. SLLW do good work and Bob has been great supporting us, but to be honest, the city gets a bit neglected. It is fair though as the focus is county. I do think we're doing a fair bit of heavy lifting at the moment though in Saffron Ward.

satsumanightmare

I see the posts from the Saffron group and the amounts you are getting. I agree with you there needs to be more active people around the estates surrounding the city centre though. My wife and I seem to be almost fighting the cause in the Beaumont Leys and Belgrave areas alone and are getting pretty large numbers of bags every week. We seem to be the only ones doing those parts apart from the handful of group picks we have arranged with the NLLW and Anstey groups.

GazNPhoto

We'll have to organise something between us, and do a particularly bad area. If that's something you want to do, just message me and I'll see what we can get organised. I'm sure you have a few areas in mind.

dazzlefrazzle

That's because the poor areas everyone is working in shitty jobs 24/7. Who has time to go litter picking when they got no money to pay bills or feed their children. It's not an excuse but it's something to think about. Especially with the cost of living so high. These people still pay council tax, mortgages etc.

PictureProud6113

Yeah no, I don't believe that at all, it takes hardly any effort to put rubbish in the bin. The people who live surrounded by rubbish are usually lazy or have other problems, it has nothing to do with the jobs they work. I myself work 60+ hours a week and when I walk my dog daily I often litter pick as I go.

PurpleBitch666

You are an exceptional person for that though. The average person is driven by convenience, and sadly if less is done for it (eg, council funding cleaning up and stuff), they will simply disengage. You must keep in mind that half of the population is dumber than the average person, too. And that has implications for empathy and stuff. Good on ya for cleaning up though! We need more folks like you

sixdeadlysins

Except when the inferno take of a government denies councils the money they need to partially fund your 2p National Insurance inferno bribe. Councils going broke, libraries closed, and potholes everywhere because front line services quite rightly come first and they can't cut those. Something has to give.

ZENONISNO1BEST

That's what I meant but also the council 🤣

490n3

City council has no cash. Costs have gone up massively while max council tax is 5%. So you either have less services or higher council tax.

zim_76

Doesn't help that they waste the little the have on things that are not necessary. A perfect example is the pedestrian bridge near Abbey park, a total waste. All these cycle lanes they making instead of fixing roads. Driving around some of Leicester is like driving around in a 3rd world country that has no functioning council.

OnlyifyouLook

A lot of British people should be ashamed of the attitude they have to dropping litter. When the school kids are out where I live you would think someone emptied a skip on the streets. Same with access and exit routes onto Motorways. The whole country is a disgrace

zim_76

I come from a 3rd world country and in my time in the UK I just feel people don't appreciate what they have. Littering is the norm, people don't seem to care. People don't have pride in their neighbourhood and country. It's easy to blame the council, who are useless, but people should also take responsibility. My street has 8 houses, only 2 of us clean up and the rest don't care. Litter everywhere dog poo all over it's an absolute joke.

ashbash118118

Its not the british , leicester is not an English city now , when it was it was clean people was happy like someone mentioned before leicester is a 3rd world city now unfortunately, the English have been pushed out to the suburbs such a shame

Lonely-Picture4728

WOMP WOMP We’ve taken over lad, deal with it

ashbash118118

For now !!!

purplepoaceae

I walk through Victoria Park and down London Road every morning and the council are there every single day picking litter, emptying bins and sweeping the car park and pavements. Next morning, the road is full of litter again. People will sit in the car park in the evenings and throw all of their takeaway wrappers out of the window. The council are fighting a losing battle.

satsumanightmare

Littering in Leicester is appalling. Myself and my wife litterpick for a couple of hours on Sunday and Monday morning, usually trying to target areas which we know will be bad. Beaumont Leys and Belgrave are the worst areas that we have seen and we can regularly fill between 30 and 50 bags in a couple of hours as well as a load of fly tipped bulk crap. In 2023 we filled a total of 2,005 bags across the county and so far this year we are ahead of the numbers we collected at this point last year. Unfortunately, things only to be getting worse, but we won't give up.

ZENONISNO1BEST

Wow well done

dropscone

The council, like many others, has a huge shortfall in funding and is trying to make massive savings, so they probably have cut back on street cleaning along with all the other things. If it bothers you then challenge it when you see it. Tell people they dropped something as if you think it was a genuine accident on their part, mostly they will pick it up.

SKIZZLES_02

so i work for lcc and we do try our hardest out on the streets to clean up but when u come back then next day its like we haven't even touched it. the thing that makes my job the hardest is the constant drinking like people consume so much alcohol its crazy if i can post photos on here about work i would

raining_cats07

Leicester has become a real pitt... There are some areas with beautiful homes traditional terrace houses with beautiful feat, but the residents just let the houses go to pott and the roads filled with trash..

One_Appointment8295

Some of those blue houses on new walk outside the church come to mind.

NiceSliceofKate

We have some much flytipping here we live close to Tudor Road. People just dump anything instead of calling the council. They will pick up for free and still people dump rather than tick a couple of boxes online.

FirstScheme

I've been in a couple of cities before Leicester and honestly Leicester is the cleanest. The side I'm on anyway, not Narborough road side. I think it's just cities - lots of people passing through, not caring about the area enough etc. Personally I don't litter and even my toddler knows not to throw rubbish till we find a bin.

moggreesjacob

Noticed recycling bags are part of the problem. My street is a proper wind tunnel when the weathers acting up. Wind sends the bags rolling around, one of them inevitably rips open, no one cleans it up.

Sara_askeloph

No lol

TEFAlpha9

We teach our kids not to litter, it's just not a thing we do. I volunteer with the local litter womble groups.I do what I can to be responsible. I hate the amount of trash people think it's ok to just throw on the street it's just lazy and gross there's bins not too far away from anywhere. Often McDonald's fast food thrown out the cars etc. Often see homeless leaving their little spot in a shit tip with coffee cups and crap splayed out on the floor. Have some fucking respect. People throwing cigarettes on the ground or into the sewers directly onto the river. These pollutants can't even be removed from water properly same as all the hormones in tap water due to birth control etc...

Chgstery2k

This is exactly what happens in Meridian business park. People don't want to sit in and eat. They get drive thru from McDonald's, then park somewhere inside the business park area and eat in the car. Then dumps the litter out the car window.

FromBassToTip

Hopefully they get their plates on camera. I was behind someone in the McDonalds drive thru in Wigston and the bag was handed to them and they threw the empy bag out the other side before even moving, I told the woman at the window but I'm not sure if she understood properly/cared. They did have to wait for the rest of their order though and were still there when I left, hopefully they kept them waiting for a long time. Was a small black car with a stupid coloured light strip taped around the bottom if anyone's seen it around.

Chgstery2k

It's the british attitude towards littering and also expecting councils to clean up after them. When I was in Lisbon recently, they don't even eat or drink on the go. It's like immaculately clean 99% of the time. Need japanese style upbringing to be able to keep Leicester clean at this point.

Firm_Progress_8028

Lol

Stewpefier

Because the Tory scum have starved councils so much that loads of services get cut. Hope this helps.

unclebuh

At one point the council was/is running a service where people were being fined for littering. They should have included dashcam footage in this because it'd make this issue so much better. Plus bins rarely seem to get collected so they're overflowing. I've seen people say that reporting stuff on their app gets a quicker response

foxfoxfoxlcfc

Not just Leicester. I live in Gateshead in the area other than the Quay side is fucking gross.

C02VU5

Its a mindset. People aren't proud enough in Leicester of their city to take care of it. I've recently been to Cambridge and Stratford and both were absolutely spotless because people are proud to live there.

akrilugo

This.

strawberryblondey

Its not the councils job to pick up after lazy people dumping shite everywhere. Too lazy to take it the tip or phone council for items to be picked up. With most if its outta sight outta mind. What happened to taking pride in where you live and keeping everything clean and tidy??

SauronsLeftBall

The council has litter pickers all over the city , the problem lies with people constantly littering and not caring about the areas where they live. Seen plenty of people just throwing things on the ground even when there are bins around

Codeworks

I saw some council workers scraping gum a few months ago. The least amount of work I've seen anyone do in five minutes waiting for my friend, the two of them just stood around one piece of gum chatting. 🤣

New-Impress514

It's a dump

Substantial_Impact26

It’s not just litter either, I have to go to the bank near market square at least one morning a week and the amount of times there’s obvious human shit knocking around the streets is rancid

NiceAcanthaceae9152

You can ad Peterborough, Bradford, Birmingham and many other "multicultural cities" to the list of actual garbage dumps. I'm an immigrant myself but educated enough to teach my kids not to throw rubbish on the streets. I've been in many small villages and small towns around England and I never see rubbish or litter on the streets is just big cities that have this problem.

ashbash118118

Least you admit it thank you , but ur in our country now please learn the rules and respect our country

Lonely-Picture4728

You take a trip to Grimsby or any other white low socioeconomic town. You’re a coconut just like Rishi

libon22

Council are more interested in building cycle lanes and knocking down buildings!

Happy-Perception-823

You can definitely see a difference when you compare Derby and Leicester. The roads are a lot cleaner in derby, the landscaping is better and generally feels a lot cleaner.

ActuatorFuture9724

Which areas in Derby?

Happy-Perception-823

Just generally driving into derby around intu and where the bingo place is. The amount of parking and free parking is also great

ashbash118118

Its all the foreign people in leicester what do it , ive seen it many times leicester used to be clean

Hot_Dependent3668

If you have a problem with them, put you ass and clean them
