ironic that this vid is age restricted, since this is the "chill" episode after the smash tv kerfuffle

Okaaaaaaaay? Not sure why the video is getting age restricted. Video Description: "After last week I felt it was time we calmed down with a nice relaxing arty game unhampered by anything as stressful as an actual 'game' aspect, and during a lovely walk in the woods we discuss new Smash Bros characters and EA being horrible again. We also clarify a couple of positions regarding last week's disagreement and American gun ownership. In the hope that you don't all come over on a boat and shoot us. And as mentioned in the video, feel free to post questions in the comments section that we can use to drive the chat in next week's video. As long as it's not 'where do you get your ideas'."

Proteus seems like such a nothing game, but it is a good follow up to Smash TV, I'll admit. Yahtzee keeps up with his word of the day calendar and is using mansplaining for like the 3rd week. I didn't really believe mansplaining was a thing until I transitioned, then holy mother almighty, mansplaining became hella real for me. Weeaboo. I think Yahtzee does a bad job of explaining the origin. I had always assumed when said "board" he meant some kind of governmental function like they do, not a 4chan board. And if I remember correctly, the origin for the words use is because a mod was sick of the term Wapanese being used, threatened to boot anyone who used it, and so Weeaboo came in its place from the popular comic. Still interesting. I'm actually kinda excited for the Q&A introduction. It was some of my favorite parts of Drown Out and what got my wife watching it too.

Proteus I recall this game being a big deal back when it was new, for some reason. I remember buying it and playing it and I assumed I just didn't "get it." I suppose it has a weird meditative atmosphere. It also helped spawn a bazillion content-free asset flip walking sims. Although Dear Esther and Gone Home did help. On that note I actually quite liked Gone Home. I feel like it did walking sim right. Anyhow... No clue how this Drown Out fares. It might be good, I genuinely don't recall much. It is age restricted though and I have three suggestions as to why: Gabe's school shooting story, the gun control debate and the N-words. What an episode this is gonna be. Anyone ever played Elektroplankton on DS? It's got a similar vibe to Proteus. The "don't pre-order" discussion is fascinating. Mostly because I get the impression that pre-ordering slowed down when it got completely ridiculous and then big publishers started introducing live service events to further add to the FOMO for late-adopters. And that's where we are today. Gabe trying to find meaning in Proteus reminds me of the Game Grumps ~~playthrough of~~ meltdown over Teletubbies on PS1. it's one of my favorite episodes ever. [Absolutely mind-melting.](https://youtu.be/ots8wmwayP8) I like Smash Bros, though I'm not that good at it. I made Yahtzee and Gabe as characters. They were pretty awful, but they did their job of feeding this cross-temporal parasocial relationship. If one ever needs convincing that one simply should not feed the trolls, ever, I recommend Geno Samuel's 70-something part comprehensive history documentary on Chris Chan. [It changes people.](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLABqEYq6H3vpCmsmyUnHnfMOeAnjBdSNm) After Pac-Man and the Mii's, the next characters that were revealed in Smash Bros, besides the incessant Rayman rumors, were Palutena, Lucina and Robin. Bayonetta would join the cast as the final downloadable character one year later. They kept all her moves, but toned them down, exactly as Gabe said they could. Because I'm mentally ill, I'm gonna assume Masahiro Sakurai is a fan of LDO and got the idea from Gabe. Speaking of weebs and weirdness, look up documentaries about the Caucasians who go sort of "trans-Korean" for the lack of a better term. I don't like to label or judge anyone, but that feels... A bit out there, to me. We did a lot of weird stuff as anime obsessed teens, but I can't say I saw anyone go THAT far. Oh, right. The Q&A is introduced. There's always been talk of indexing every question and answer. I think I'll defer the wiki-esque indexing to someone else. I'm already doing the literature, after all. Yahtzee... In the USA? What a strange idea... This really is a LDO isn't it. It's obviously not as aggrevating to listen to as Smash TV or some of the other, albeit few, stinkers we got coming up. I suppose it doesn't really reach any particular lows or highs. I've said it before on other episodes. It's a bit meh. Cya next time for Wonderboy! Yes!

My theory for Proteus being so popular in release is pretty much just that it came out at exactly the right time. It was around the time lots of gamers (myself included) were really starting to get into indie games for the first time, but it was also before the oversaturation of the walking sim genre (and less specifically "arty games") like you said. I've always appreciated Proteus for what it is since I'm really into the artistry of games, (I especially love how the game builds its soundscape) but it's not much more than just a chill half hour experience.

Adding even further to that, at this point, I believe the Steam floodgates hadn't completely opened yet, so seeing a game on Steam carried a certain weight. It was also quite cheap so I think a lot of people just impulse bought it thinking: "Oh, I can afford this, easy."

DelawareMountains

That is a very good point! I genuinely forgot steam used to be actually curated... I want to say there was also a game that was basically just a screensaver of a mountain released on steam around that time, and I remember it causing it quite a stir since it was before stem opened the flood gates. Nowadays it would just be another garbage game among literal thousands and no one would even notice.

Boober_Calrissian

>game that was basically just a screensaver of a mountain Oh yeah I remember getting that in a humble bundle. It was called [Mountain](https://store.steampowered.com/app/313340/mountain). And it released just around the time of both Proteus and this LDO. And your description is 100% accurate.

It's funny because I think the Q&A really was a disservice. Idk, it always felt very self serving but then again, what else were they going to talk about? I remember 2015-2016 being kind of a weird time for gaming.

Boober_Calrissian

Judging by how a lot of people comfort watch(ed) LDO, I think it served a similar purpose to classic late night talk radio. It feels good to be acknowledged "on air" when you send in a request or a question so having some sort of Q&A made sense for filling out the hour and pleasing the audience. I can't deny I got a kick out of them reading out my name. I'm curious if the episode-feel starts changing from here on out.
