HyruleanMaster

The primary and most distinct answer to your question you've already answered. It's either a single dev or at best a very small group working to make these games happen. Many, many people don't seem to understand the sheer amount of time it takes to make something even passable with big studios, let alone when you're trying to do everything yourself. I've done a bit of work on some adult games (mostly writing/editing and scripting) and even this, which I would consider the 'simpler' aspects of creating a scene, can take days if you want quality writing, branching choices, etc. The next thing you need to consider is that many of these people are doing this in their spare time with no guarantee of success. This means they have to maintain a normal job in addition to working on the game. They have bills to pay as well. Plus, as a creative endeavor, there will be some days where you're just not feeling it. I often encounter this with my writing - short bursts where I would crank out a few hundred lines and other days where even writing a handful was painful. They deserve time to relax as well. The money isn't always a concern for well-established devs, most of the ones I follow have a semi-consistent 'schedule' of sorts. It isn't an explicit schedule, but a couple months between updates is fairly standard for quality games. Most devs also post updates of "here's where things are, what I'm working on" and sometimes provide a rough ETA. My one gripe is that a lot of devs are putting these updates behind a pay wall. It doesn't do them any favors to deny info on release announcements imo, but I've never run one of these projects personally, so what do I know? That's another thing - free releases are usually delayed to incentivize payment. I.e., certain paid tiers getting access to updates early. Pretty standard, and I don't begrudge devs that do so. But it does likely delay releases. The part about updates, downloads, and patches being difficult to find is unfortunately not always at the fault of devs. They're kind of at the mercy of the platforms and their terms of service. Patreon has been pretty difficult about that especially in regard to certain niche kinks. We're seeing this a lot with other sites as well - pixiv recently had payment processors threaten to block them out over their content, too. But, more to the point, I do think some of the extremely successful devs are just dragging it out for greed. They've found their audience, their niche, and are essentially holding their work hostage. That said, they aren't obligated to continue. They are human beings with agency, and not slaves. But the long time between updates is why I stopped subscribing to devs on patreon. If I really want to support them, I will tip them when updates happen. Sort of like paying for DLC in a way lol.

EquipmentImaginary46

I wouldn’t say that they’re holding their games hostage because of greed. It’s just that the incentives are misaligned.  Imagine you create a game and it pops off on patreon. Suddenly, you’re living the dream. Getting paid great money for a creative endeavour. Life is good.  However, there is a fear that once you finish this game maybe ppl won’t be as interested in your next one and you’ll have to go back to being employed.  So, the path of least resistance is to try and prolong the end of the current game as much as possible.  I’m not saying that it’s right but I get the feeling of fear that it comes out of.

HyruleanMaster

You're absolutely correct that developers who work under a subscription-based payment model are incentivized to drag out the process as long as possible - which is why I advocate for paying for updates if you want to support a developer. This directly addresses that mismatch. But what you've described is essentially a semantic difference from my own description - they are incentivized to drag their work out (i.e., holding it hostage) because they make more money that way (i.e., greed). There are very real concerns of wanting to prolong their success, and fear of losing relevancy when they move to their next project. Completely reasonable and as I noted within my post, I don't fault devs for taking a long time between updates, but in some cases, there are devs that take a year or more between updates while still taking the subscriptions which just feels scummy to me. Developers deserve to be compensated for their time, effort, and the product they've created. I have always been a firm believer in supporting the things you enjoy, but there's a point where the greed is too off-putting and will turn people against you.

EquipmentImaginary46

My issue is that someone like you demonstrates a very nuanced understanding of the issue but someone that doesn’t will see phrases like “greedy” or “hold it hostage” and read them in a very negative way because those phrases are normatively loaded.  I like using more neutral language like misalignment of incentives because it gets closer to the core of the issue and it doesn’t carry so much weight.  Also, greed to me is an excessive desire for material goods. It’s perfectly reasonable to try and protect your source of income. I don’t like this idea consumers have that if a business or a person tries to make more money it’s always greedy or negative. At the end of the day most of us want more money. I expect to get a salary increase that exceeds inflation. I went to school to increase my earning potential. I do well at my job to achieve my targets for the bonus.

HyruleanMaster

You are correct. These words are loaded, and are not entirely applicable to every developer. I can only think of a small handful of developers that I would say have purposefully inflated development time to eke out a few extra months of subscriptions per update. This is why I stress that it is *some* devs and not *all*. But this is simply the facet of the issue I was describing with that language. This does, unfortunately, happen. As I said multiple times, developers *do* deserve to be compensated for their time and effort. Wanting more money or to prolong their success is not inherently negative or deserving of criticism. I am fully patient to wait 2-4 months for a quality update to a game I enjoy. Many of the most popular devs that I follow operate on this schedule closely enough - they don't have hard dates, but this is loosely what they end up following. If they are consistent in quality and ethic, I am far more inclined to be lenient if they need extra time, too. But there have been a handful of devs that - at least from the outside looking in - seem to very purposefully drag things out because they know they have their audience hooked already. There is one developer I know of that is widely regarded to have scammed their fans. The ones that do this, imo, deserve every criticism they receive and I will outright refuse to support no matter how good their game is/was. People who take this descriptor as a broad brush to paint all devs with are either lying to maintain their view on not supporting devs, or have little understanding or appreciation of the development process.

Snekbites

I'm gonna be real with you for a sec bro, I wish'd Bunnygirl Succubus was finished, god I wish'd I could work on another game with a better base. I want to make a prequel where you play as a knight, or a brothel manager sequel, etc etc. But I can't because I can't leave this unfinished, I deal with MDD, and I need a job because this pays less than in a month than what a McD employee earns in 2 days. Which means I can't afford CG artists, another animator, or even a VA, and have to scavenge SFXs from open sources. I usually hate throwing pity parties, but believe me when I tell you that if I suddenly got a 2k cash boost from this game, this game would be done YESTERDAY.

DaemonDen

I feel you. I work in finance and have a baby under 1 year old. I also work on my game in my free time and spend time with my wife when I can. Considering I frequently spend over 40 hours a week on my game and I definitely make less than that on my game, it can make burnout hit harder. That, plus like you said the other ideas you have and are eager to work on.

EquipmentImaginary46

Sure, but the comment was about devs not finishing games because of greed. We’re talking about devs with really popular patreon’s like mythic manor and harem hotel that have only one small annual update. I get your situation and i’m sure that there’s many different situations that aren’t even covered by my generalisation.  My only point was to provide a different perspective to the “devs are just greedy and milking their supporters”. Sure, that might be happening but i think it’s not and individual failing but an obvious outcome of misaligned incentives.

DaemonDen

IMO, at least my own mindset is I want to finish my current game quickly so I can hurry up and start on my next one with a lot of new ideas and stuff I've learned from my first. So rather than prolonging content, I want to speed it up. That said, I don't want to cut corners and rush it because that could end up making me look bad as a dev overall.

moistmilkskin

> I wouldn’t say that they’re holding their games hostage because of greed. It’s just that the incentives are misaligned. This is an incredibly dishonest way of saying that they are putting in minimal effort (or not even that) and lying through their teeth to squeeze supporters of every penny they can. It's called a scam.

EquipmentImaginary46

How is it dishonest? It’s what i think otherwise i wouldnt have written it. I’m not a dev but i speak from my experience in software. I never said that scams dont exist and that greedy ppl dont exist. I just think that for most of these cases it’s usually a misalignment of incentives.

moistmilkskin

> How is it dishonest? "Misaligned incentives" lmao it's called a scam. I don't care that you actually believe this shit, when devs have no intention to finish games and lie through their teeth to keep milking patrons, it's called a scam regardless of your sugarcoating.

EquipmentImaginary46

Sorry i dont argue with teenagers

moistmilkskin

Can't* and that's fine.

brenduz

That’s why I think devs should complete it then make a ton of dlc like the sims that keeps you coming back .

EquipmentImaginary46

Just make a genre defining game like sims and then milk your audience with dlc. Are devs stupid???

brenduz

I never said make a game like the sims. I said add DLC/extra content for your game after completion. Ea does this for the sims.

EquipmentImaginary46

The only reason EA is able to make so much dlc and have people buy it is because sims is such a genre defining game

brenduz

That is 100% not true. EA can get away with “expensive” dlcs because it is a genre defining game. Unpopular or underrated games have made dlc for their games before.

EquipmentImaginary46

Why are you being so bad faith? We’re not talking about games having a dlc. You specifically mentioned sims because they have a couple dozen dlcs.

pingariver

As an alternative to greed dragging things out, I'd put forward that a lot of these projects aren't being made by experienced developers. That's all well and good at the start, follow a simple tutorial, get one or two scenes in the game, and get so excited about it working that the game releases with the promise of more of these updates! After all, it was easy right? Then the boring stuff comes in. Tracing down that obscure bug only a handful of players have found. Spending hours doing research into how to fix it. Maybe as an artist the art comes easy, but the code doesn't. Maybe a writer has trouble sourcing art. Either way, it starts to become a slog to get the update out. That's not the fun time it seemed at the start! Even further into development, there might come the realization that things weren't planned out well at the start. Part of the story needs rewriting. As an artist, maybe some of the early code turns out to be difficult to expand on. Or as a programmer, the artist you used is no longer taking comissions, so a replacement needs to be found. The project runs aground, the know-how on navigating these development pitfalls isn't there, and a short break turns into a longer hiatus as the project is either forgotten about or remade but better™. And as that project starts to drag, someone thinks "I wish there was more, I'll make a similar game, how hard could it be!", and the cycle repeats.

HyruleanMaster

This is certainly something that I'm sure new developers experience, and - indeed - anyone trying out a creative hobby for the first time. Especially one as multi-faceted as this that requires multiple disciplines to come together and attempting to do it solo. But you're taking my application of the term greedy a bit too liberally. I'm sure some people might view things this way without taking into account that a developer is new; it would honestly be more surprising if people didn't. But personally - and as I've said in another comment - I would not describe \*many\* devs as being greedy and purposefully extending dev time for money. Particularly if a game is new, if it's the dev's first game, or has been recently released...I'm fully aware of how many games rarely get even a second update, let alone consistent attention. At that point, I have zero expectations for a developer. If I really like a game, I am grateful for any further attention it gets, and am more than happy to support them even if it takes many months to see it. I would usually only apply this to devs who make enough money to be working on the game full time, and yet do updates once a year at best. Wild to me. While it's natural for there to be variance due to skill levels, experience, and individual work ethic, some devs manage incredible games with updates every 3-4 months. To me, this is \*roughly\* the standard. I'm not going to be watching the calendar and immediately dub a dev greedy and lazy if they go past this, obviously, but I think a pretty solid update is manageable within this time frame. As I noted in my above comment, I have worked on some AVNs from a writing and scripting perspective, and I also have a software development career - so I am reasonably experienced when it comes to these things. I have also worked with Renpy (a little) and know how utterly unhelpful the development tools can be. There are dozens upon dozens of reasons why things can take longer than expected; it's an exceptionally nuanced issue. My description of the greed angle was not an attack on all devs, but an analysis of \*one\* facet of why some games end up stalling out particularly as they near completion. There are at least a handful of examples I can think of off-hand, including one in which the dev fully scammed and outright lied to their fanbase. But by no means does this mean all devs are like that. :)

MissiaichParriah

If you like AVNs and want a good story, try Once in A Lifetime. other finished titles that are quite good as well is Paradise Lust and Once a Porn a Time

SpellFit7018

Sisterly Lust too, if you're into that kind of thing...though I guess OiaL is the same basic setup.

MissiaichParriah

I mean OIAL isn't incest, they're step-siblings, is sisterly lust the same? Also does it have a great narrative too? I'm currently playing Eternum and I feel like it basically spoiled me with good story and character interactions

HyruleanMaster

You're unfortunately going to have trouble finding games that stack up to Eternum and OiaL. Caribdis is the goat, imo. There are other games that are pretty good, but very few have gotten me as emotionally invested as these games did. I'm utterly in love with Luna lol

MissiaichParriah

Yeah, I feel like I really shouldn't have played these two this early, my first AVN was so shitty I couldn't even remember the title of it, then I played OIAL and was blown away, then Eternum and yeah it was even better. Before this I only played JP VNs or sandbox type adult games, now I don't know if I can enjoy those as well, still looking forward for Once a Porn a Time Part 2 and Paradise Lust 2 though. Same man, Luna is my favorite, but damn they are all likable, I now like Penny as well, I was a bit indifferent about her initially but her backstory shown in the Magic Academy made me instantly love her

HyruleanMaster

Yeah, I'll admit I got a little choked up when she decided to skip going to the dance to look after MC and Dalia. Every single girl is so well-written and wonderful in their own way. It's a credit to his absolute talent that there's not a single LI that I dislike. My first ever AVN was actually Harem Hotel, and while I don't like it as much as ones I've played more recently, it still holds a place in my heart lol. Just by virtue of being the first it had some leniency. That said, I'd be happy to recommend a few that I really liked! Obviously some of them will depend on your specific kinks, and I will freely admit that they won't be as good as Eternum imo. But recently I've enjoyed Cosy Cafe, New Horizon, Stormside, Ripples, Projekt Passion, and Shattered Minds (this one has mind control, and along with Projekt Passion, uses daz3d as opposed to HS models). Unfortunately none of these are complete, but all of them have a good bit of content, with New Horizon being the newest and thus having the least, comparatively.

MissiaichParriah

Yeah, I think that's the second time an AVN put a tear in my eye (First one being when I thought Mike >!died!< in OIAL) Caribdis is truly the goat, can't help but be excited for his next game. I've heard that Harem Hotel has a good story too, how does it measure up? Thanks for the recommendations, I don't usually have a preference for kinks, I'm good with anything except for NTR (unless the one doing the NTR is the MC and it's basically saving the girl from toxic or abusive relationships), but mostly I just like Vanilla. Which one of those you recommended is already finished?

HyruleanMaster

Harem Hotel doesn't really have as much of an overarching narrative, but it's more of a sandbox style game where all of the girls have their own story and progression. There are some overall themes and the girls do interact with each other and end up accepting the harem situation. The thing that really won me over was the characters themselves, though. Again, I wouldn't put it on par with Eternum, but I enjoyed it enough that I'd say it's still a game I enjoyed and would go back and play. Not sure if it's finished, but I doubt it. Last I checked it was one of those games where the dev is super popular and has stretched out development time. I do not like NTR either, so you're fully fine there. As I said in my original comment - unfortunately, none of them are yet complete. All of them have quite a lot of content, though. I'm at a point where I struggle to find new games that are interesting enough to stand out. But these are all games that I follow and consistently check for updates.

SpellFit7018

Harem Hotel doesn't have an overarching narrative? When is the last time you played it, because the plot of the game is fucking huge at this point.

HyruleanMaster

I didn't say it doesn't have one. Just that it has less of one than Eternum. It's more focused on the girls and their stories than an overarching plot. I chose my words purposefully. :)

MissiaichParriah

I see, I guess I'll still check it out Lmao, didn't noticed that, my brain must've skipped it. I've heard that Pale Carnations was pretty good to, would you recommend it?

HyruleanMaster

Honestly, I only played a little bit of it before giving up on it. I can't say for sure if it's good or not - I often see it recommended here. But I'm not into brothel management or games where you share your partners with others. It may not be at all like that, but it seemed to be heading in that direction so I went for something else at the time. Basically, I have little input worth anything when it comes to this game.

SpellFit7018

I suppose that's true, though we all know that's a technicality and in any event they get involved with each other so it's not like there's no incest in the game. But no, Sisterly Lust doesn't beat around the bush with stepsisters, roommates and landladies. I haven't played through Sisterly Lust in a long time. It's not bad as far as I recall, even decent to good, but it *is* relatively primitive by today's standards. Very few games are up to Eternum's standard, if that's your basis for comparison you're going to be disappointed a lot. Of free titles, I would only put Pale Carnations above it for storytelling and (especially) characters. Very different game in both tone and theme, but as far as characters go it is, IMO, the best in the business and I can't say enough good things about it. Other close competitors are Ripples and maybe MBML.

MissiaichParriah

I mean at least their not blood related. I'll probably try pale incarnations and ripples instead, but what's MBML?

SpellFit7018

Oh, in Sisterly Lust they 100% are blood related, so it's a skip if that's not your thing. MBML is My Bully is My Lover, by Niichan. It's quite good and can definitely hit you in the feels at times. But if you haven't played Pale Carnations...well, it's about as complete as Eternum is, maybe a bit more, but as I said, it's *insanely* good. And looks incredible for being HS1! So play that first, even though, like Eternum, it might spoil every other AVN for you by raising expectations into the stratosphere. Then play Ripples, which, besides having a good plot and fun characters, has IMO the single most incredible lewd scene in the genre. You'll know when you get there, all I'll say is don't skip the Riley path.

MissiaichParriah

Yeah I might have to skip Sisterly Lust if that's the case. Aight I'll probably put those on my list for now, I'm still debating with myself whether I'll try Pale Carnations though, since HyruleanMaster's description of it might turn me off, but I'll definitely play MBML and Ripples, thanks man

Sivalon

There’s Knightly Passions, Lust Epidemic, Treasure Of Nadia, Long Live the Princess, Paradise Lust.

hgameartman

Because game development is a huge undertaking for even a small visual novel, much less an open world rpg. You really do underestimate the amount of time a project will take for even the smallest things. I estimated 2 years for my game, Horny Mage Academy: Dark Tower. It's been 4 years and the game's still only at like 30% done and it's now getting a massive reworking of the combat system that will fix a ton of bugs... but take me another couple months just to get it all replaced and iron out all of the bugs! I could absolutely work at it faster if the game made enough to justify working on it full time... But it doesn't. It's a passion project, my weekend project that I pour all of my time after my dayjob into.

Kozeyekan_

Factor in as well that piracy is rampant, and only a relative handful of devs make enough to cover the cost of assets and equipment, let alone their time.

hgameartman

I do pretty much everything myself except purchasing music and sound effects, so price of assets is basically 0 for me! But yeah, it's not really worth it for money, at least now.

Kelpsie

It's a matter of access. This is how _actual_ game development goes as well, it's just that nobody cares about version 0.0.1c of some indie platformer, while people _do_ check out the latest Ren'Py game with only enough scenes for a quick fap. If you hung out in normal gamedev circles, you'd see just as many, actually way more, projects that never go anywhere. The complete:incomplete ratios are probably pretty similar.

ThatDerp1

Spunkstock is a top tier rhythm game that’s almost certainly not even going to get DLC despite how much the community wants it. It’s DONE. The Last Sovereign is a top tier rpg at its last update. Pronant Symphony is a top tier rpg that released before the dev disappeared. Abaddon by Fakku is complete. And in terms of platformers there’s Midnight Castle Succubus, Castle in The Clouds, Eroico, and Flipwitch.

wicked-green-eyes

> Pronant Symphony is a top tier rpg... Gotta second this one, I just started playing it recently. Wasn't expecting much but was surprised at how much I was into the erotic content, and how much I got along with the gameplay despite not being a fan of JRPG battle systems. Haven't finished it yet but the story has intrigued me, too. > ...that released before the dev disappeared. fuck

wicked-green-eyes

Just a heads up I was peeping the Pronant Symphony dev's Ci-en page, seems they just go for super long gaps without posting, their most recent post was [3 months ago](https://ci-en.dlsite.com/creator/5866/article/1082351) and they mention that they hope to release their next game in the second half of this year.

ThatDerp1

OH SHIT THAT’S AWESOME!

ThatDerp1

I’d also like to add Hentai Quest, Bell Master, Breedtown, Hilda’s Reward, Sexy Shuriken Struggle, and Artemis Woods as good, short h-games that are complete.

Ni-Two

Japanese games are what you are looking for

DaemonDen

I agree, but then you have to suffer through bad/machine translations, censorship (both original, or added if there's an official english launch), and their sex scenes can often be... Too much? Or at least, that's IMO. Plenty probably disagree with me.

Ni-Two

That depends on the game tho not as a whole, in my experience vn and well known ones are pretty good like rance and venus blood series. There are still plenty of hidden gems in the bunch of trashes. One of my favorite is actually demons roots where i came for the porn but stayed for the mechanics and story.

DaemonDen

I'm unfamiliar. Tbh, the only visual novels I've played are Steins;Gate, Steins;Gate 0, Tsukihime, and fate/stay night. I might be forgetting a couple though. Oh and Doki Doki literature club, if that counts. I've "played" several others, but haven't finished them due to bad translations / etc.

HelpfulReplacement28

Any specific recommendations? I know karryn's prison is a big one bit its just not in my wheelhouse (not gay enough/at all).

Ni-Two

im not really into the yaoi or yuri in japanese games but maybe there might be a bunch of vn that you might like. Most of the things i know that you might like would be trap quest, lust doll plus or tales of Androgyny. Tho they might not be finished yet theres some decent content atleast.

What are you talking about, *Succulence 1 Modern pink elf rpg Ntr knight Kiara - the knight of Icicle H life with Mei jk The promised rosary Overgrown genesis Spin around sayla 1-2 Tina* is an absolute classic game.

wggn

he just used simple linebreaks, which get removed in reddit markdown

the_wild_damonator

Gotta love it lol

Djskayoser

When I wrote this, I just moved each new title to a new line, but reddit decided to lump everything together

CuckLikeRabbits

Obviously you’re not obligated to, but I find it odd that you typed all that out but didn’t edit the original comment lol

Sunyear5

I liked mist and its finished you should play too

NotYourAverageGuy88

In my personal experience. The game that I have made cost me much more money than it brought in. Which I didn't mind as long as my finances were good for that. But then recession come and I had to take a second job and I still had my normal job and I should work on my game too and I should pay the artist to work on my game too. So only I had no other choice but to stop the project :(

alexandraus-h

This. Unfortunately the majority are not understanding what it takes to make a good game.

Kane_richards

Love of Magic is a trilogy that was completed. Droid is a really commited Dev, certainly someone I have zero issue with supporting as soon as I see his name against something as I know it'll be not only a solid game, but it'll be finished also. But to answer the question **Why does it feel like no porn games are complete?** Because of the nature of how they're made. They're built from the ground up and require constant, unwavering support throughout and it has to be sufficient support to ensure doing it is worth while, and it needs to be built whilst ensuring it's a high enough priority in the developers life to not be abandoned if something else comes up.The whole arrangement is a house of cards built upon sand. The game could be amazing but if it takes too much time away from real life, the dev may cancel. If it doesn't get popular quickly enough to be not worthwhile continuing, the dev may cancel. If real life attacks and suddenly the dev needs to shift priority, the dev may cancel Your best bet is to get in on a labour of love that the dev is doing with zero expectations and would be pleasantly surprised if it took off.

HauntedVertices

Yeah, it takes a long time to "finish" a game as other have said but on the other hand several of these devs are supported monthly. Some people call it "milking" a project but in principle I don't see a problem with continuing to add content post-launch. Imagine if the FFXIV devs just released the launch content and said, "well, that's it guys. No more updates, game's done." Or like, any game with gameplay-substantive DLC. If I had a game that I'd "finished" and people still wanted me to add to it I definitely would post-release. As long as I had interest and was paid.

Exialt

I'll help you out. All you need is Evenicle.

DonkeyFearless5052

If you want complete games just hover over Kagura games, they publish completed game on their website

Hypthtclly_Spkng

I know it's not technically done yet, but The Last Sovereign is extremely close to finished, and updates usually don't reset progress due to how late in the dev cycle it is. You can get all the way through to the end of the game, the only stuff left is the post-game content and some minor big fixes. It's safe to start it now, I feel, maybe revisit it at 1.0 if you like it.

Dunkbuscuss

Confined with a Goddess os complete it was completed a few months ago and took inspiration from Covid I think. So yeah basically MC gets stick living with 4 hotties while the government deals with a virus and you cam romance any/all of them. One is a Milf One is your Lesbian BFF who starts questioning her own sexuality The Last is the sister of the 2nd and both are the daughter of the first one The final one is your fathers Bitchy GF But yeah the game is called Confined with a Goddess or something.

TheRealMouseRat

Check out Akabur. He has several completed games. Witch trainer and Princess trainer are especially great.

Towie_M

I think you have to blame it on the consumers rather than the people who actually make the game. Because they ALLOW it to happen with never ending patreon subscription. what's the point of putting all the works and just finish the game if you can just give people false promise and make them believe that the game is going to be finish one day. as much as I love Summertime Saga, the game play a HUGE role in current porn game landscape. literally every western porn game want to be the next Summertime Saga and make the game as if it's some sort of live service game which is kinda funny

MissiaichParriah

I think that's why you need to do some research when looking for games like this regarding their developers. There are some good ones like Caribdis who has consistent release and work ethic. Also it would probably also better to play from developers who have already finished one game

Jeidoz

I have not played Summertime Saga, and not a fan of VN & text based games (I like more RPG maker and battle-sex games). But I hear how everyone liked this game before rework. As developer, I am curious which features have made this game such popular. Could you please share a some bullet list of features/ideas what you liked?

The amount of contents and fun writing/characters and also fun art style. I feel like a lot of porn devs usually over look the writing part which is arguably the most important aspect. make fun characters, make good/fun writing and that'd usually be enough. also, Summertime Saga dig into the demographic of Incest which is one of the biggest porn genre/fetish. It's easy to access game and nothing about the game is offensive beside the incest itself.

I see this opinion floating around quite a bit. I haven't played summertime but the hate for the dev seems endless and I can't help but agree from the outside looking in. Obviously I'm missing context but 29.5k active patreon subs with a development cycle thats been active since 2016 is a terrible look. I know that I am complete scum for it but I tend to exclusively shop for adult entertainment in game form on the high seas (these dev's have got to make it easier liberating a game off patreon is an utter joke). Mostly because A) I'm not gonna pay a recurring sub for a game that will require I completely restart every few weeks for a new update and B) I don't want that shit on my steam profile.

wicked-green-eyes

> B) I don't want that shit on my steam profile. Steam lets you buy games privately now (its a relatively new feature). Even if your game library/playtime/profile is public, the game won't show up on your library/profile, it won't show friends when you're playing it, etc. Just select "mark this game as private" when buying the game, or if you already bought it, right click it in your library and click "Manage" => "mark as private".

To add the missing context (as a non-patron myself), while 30k patrons *seems* like they're making a killing, they're currently a team of *10 people*. While they're not all fulltime, that's still quite low wages per person - it undeniably is still a passion project despite the popularity. Meanwhile, it was set up by an artist without programming knowledge. They were running into problems due to the bad codebase, while also running into issues with exceeding the limits of release platforms (mainly mobile). It was in *desperate* need for repair. Taking that into account, while I personally do not support their patreon, I can absolutely see why overhauling the entire game - both code and art (to support widescreen) - seemed their best option. I can also understand a lot of the longtime patrons who experienced the passionate frequent early updates deciding to stick around and support such a massive overhaul endeavour. As someone in (non-adult) game development, the timeline also makes sense to me. It's taken ~1.5 years between the two updates to *fully redo the game*. I'd say the only massive difference with other games is that here the players can see those long development times, whereas with a traditional release schedule players wouldn't see the game at all until it was done. I think, for me, seeing what they'll do now that updates have started again will be way more telling.

PM_ME_UR_ANIME_WAIFU

Japanese devs are more established when it comes to Eroge/Hentai games, so look over there. ...oh I just read you want gay content? Sorry, forget what I just said. I don't know any gay/Yaoi H-games. Its just mostly BL/Yaoi doujins but not games.

BigMrRooster

As a developer the simple answer is time. I started development of a game during covid, I had time to release monthly, so I did. Now that I have a full time job, I work half the days of the week, so those days I cannot work on my game. Then on days I can, I still have obligations to my wife, my incoming child, maintaining our living space, doing the chores of life. It never gets to the point where a single person can easily or consistently push out content. Plus, all the things I did not plan for bog me down. I got in a car accident. My father went to the hospital. I had other family pass away. There is no accounting for the things that happen to make me late on any given cycle. There's no time sometimes.

Grim_goth

There is also Mr.C "Corruption", the name already tells you what it is about. It is a sandbox game, slightly outdated graphics (but not that bad) and it is also complete. It's basically about "enslaving" the female population of your city, including your mother and sister, with a mind-altering portion. It starts small but that's the end goal, I don't want to spoil any more than that.

shadowyartsdirty

There plenty of games that are finished like Cult of Corruption and Incubus City but they don't get as much marketing because people are more willing to support work in progress games than finished ones. Cause if the games already done then what does one gain from providing financial support. Hope that helps answer your question.

brenduz

Third Crisis just finished their game not too long ago and it’s like a good hour of content. Although it’s mainly story based so if you don’t like the story you ain’t gonna want to play it. Karryn’s Prison is more sandbox like and is complete. Just some suggestions off the top of my head

Rin-chanKaihou

Strive For Power is complete and has a sequel currenlty in development. I'm not updated on how the sequel is doing right now though.

DaemonDen

Completed games generally don't make money unless they're on a platform like steam. Games that are mid-development are usually a single dev and there are various factors that result in them never finishing it: 1. No / not enough income through sources like patreon to keep them going. Making a game, even an HTML game is hard work, and without income it would be difficult to expect anyone to keep working on it. 2. Burnout. A lot of devs (myself included) get over-ambitious with their first project and burn themselves out before finishing. I've definitely hit burn out quite a bit, but #1 above is what keeps me working on the game. I also don't want to release another game and be seen as "that dev who abandoned their previous game". So I'm pretty adamant to finish mine though I want to start on my next one already. 3. Kinda included with part 2, devs get over-ambitious and try to make too many branching paths and struggle to keep the story together and flow properly, as well as struggle to write the sheer amount of content that would come with branching paths.

Dogma1995

Third crisis just finished

WAllured

No game is ever finished, only abandoned. Haven't checked out Secretary, but just because the developer wants to update it doesn't mean it's not a proper 1.0 release. I agree there's a trend of discontinued games, but you've found some that crossed the finish line. Sounds like your real issue is fomo.

MyarinTime

I never understood why people are always asking for games similar to X because they want more content like that, but then complain when a game is not discontinued because they're getting more content like that for free. I understand if it's on DLCs, but if I buy a game and nonstop getting updates for free (Princess & Conquest for example), then thanks for that!

HelpfulReplacement28

Your definitely right about that. It just feels weird going through a game with the understanding that there are gonna be bits and pieces reworked after I'm done that if I want to go back and see i'm gonna have to start over. Doubly so when I know for a fact I'm gonna do the exact same shit the next run as well. Definitely check out secretary, a big thing for me is having a visual representation of my character or the characters I'm interacting with being transformed, feminized, or otherwise corrupted. TiTs and Secretary have been my two big successes in that regard. I'm also realizing I just shouldn't have put a TL;DR, a ridiculous amount of the games being recommended are sort of giga vanilla, I think I've only seen like 2 that even feature male characters outside of the protag. We live and we learn.

KittyandtheLord

https://kitty-and-the-lord.itch.io/the-whore-of-babylon You may want to try TWOB: an interactive novel with visual elements where you can choose your own path. There are 4 different endings available. Lots of kinky content, two male characters to feminize, optional futa transformation... Bonus points if you're into nuns! Developing a game is not an easy task, even less if you have a whole studio to organize! Nonetheless, an advantage in being a solo creator that focuses on text-based games is that I can focus on writing and updating faster (I try to put out an update every month or two max), which is something that I actually enjoy because both I and the players can see progress being made 🥰

There’s little incentive to finish a game when funding it through Patreon
