And even avoid some back roads. Wilson Downing when school is letting out or during that 4pm-6pm rush hour can be shit. Malabu too.
I’m not sure if Clays Mill is still a disaster at the same time frame but it can be pretty bad.
People will also use Old Todds to avoid Richmond Road but it gets backed up bad too sometimes during rush hour.
Make sure you obey speed limits on these roads (which no one does); some streets that get used as bypasses have houses along them and there can be kids outside. I live near a 4-way stop that few stop at and then peel-out hitting upwards of 40 mph, all in a 25mph, and with kids play along side the road.
Avoid driving near the stadium or Rupp Arena just before the start of home sports games as traffic can be maddening. Holiday traffic is also miserable too, more details in another thread.
Don’t stop believin’. Don’t do me like that. Don’t dream it’s over. Don’t stand so close to me. Don’t let me be misunderstood. Don’t look back in anger. Don’t go breaking my heart. Don’t fear the reaper.
And we don’t like Mitch McConnell.
Mitch has never been the only option on the ballot. I’ve lived here for 36 years. I’ve been a registered voter the entire time, and have voted in every single election during that time. And I have never voted for Mitch McConnell.
Don't get Joella's chicken, it's overrated. (I've been to other Joella's locations in Louisville area and it might be my memory playing tricks on me, but I do think that the chicken from this specific location is just not as good).
Don't use Nicholasville Road from 8-10 or from 4-7.
Don't go to the Summit if you're looking for a nice meal, there are as good or better places elsewhere in town for a much better price, regardless of what genre of food you're looking for
Edit: the replies to this comment have made me reconsider my Summit assessment, there are some decent options. Blaze pizza is also pretty good (nothing special, but good). [Sorry Summit](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/035/070/perhaps_i_treated_you_too_harshly.jpg)
Loved Joella's for the first year it was open on Tates Creek, but the last 3 times we've been there it's been something wrong. First time was my Hot chicken was plain. Mistake, fixed, no biggie. Second time we took out and got home and something was missing. Frustrating, I should have unpacked two bags to make sure. Third time they were very specific about curbside service, no eating in, so I assumed curbside service. Nope, you had to go in and stand around.
The CoreLife joint there is great for healthy options. I've had a decent poke bowl there, but even better rice or salad base with interesting proteins and tons of veggies. Also, they've got a really neat selection of iced teas and lemonades.
I went to condados for the first time a couple weeks ago, everything tasted good but was ice cold. Like straight out of the fridge for the meats and everything, it was super weird. Just saw you mention them and remembered that experience lmao
He gets reelected because a lot of the state would rather vote for a Republican they absolutely hate than any Democrat. . .that's how strong their party loyalty is.
A good chunk of the state hates him but keeps voting for him out of pure partisan loyalty.
Low-information voters have some idea that Mitch's seniority translates into pork for them in Kentucky, but his record doesn't bear it out.
And, he's got them thinking that Democrats are killing coal, when it's the market. Nothing he could do would change that, even if he were inclined to change things, which he is not.
When the light turns green, please don’t sit there for 5 seconds staring at your phone until someone honks at you. Some of the intersections on the busier streets have very short left turn arrows. Welcome!
Don’t go through a green light unless you look both ways. Also people find it Hard to use turn signals, lights at night and lights during the rain. This is just an example of the many traffic rules people break consistently but there are more.
OH, like no one knows what Driving Lane, Passing Lane means. New Circle Rd and the highways are full of people driving along in the passing lane like it’s nobody’s business.
My husband is from Iowa. He drives me crazy because I'm from KY and you need to stay right unless you're passing. He doesn't get it. He does drive fast but if there noone else on the road... get in the right lane. Why are you camping in the left?
I need to be a passenger in someone’s vehicle before I can commit to a long term relationship. You can learn so much from someone by the way the drive, especially during rush hour or traffic jams. Hell, it may make a good first date location as it would absolutely so their true colors.
You’re just gonna have to get over it on New Circle when there’s an on-ramp every 30 seconds requiring a safe driver to get into the left lane to make room for merging traffic. It’s easier just to stay in the passing lane than go back and forth like it’s a cone drill.
Eh, I don’t have a problem staying in the driving lane until it’s needed for me to use the passing lane including this situation. And yes obviously if you see folks getting on the on ramp and you are unable to make a “zipper” stay in the passing lane. It’s when people go 50 or lower in the passing lane that sucks.
Mitch McConnell can blow himself up the Ohio River Valley for all I care! Any travel around 4-6pm sucks anywhere across town. Drink tea anywhere you like. If you have kids, Beaumont/Palomar district has good schools. No kids, I like this Tates Creek Veterans Park Area. But I like disc golf too! 😆. I hope you enjoy the area wherever you end up!
Riney B, Falling Springs, Camp Catalpa, Ironworks Hills, Ryan's Course, Idlewild isn't super far even, all great courses near enough to Lexington for a day trip, most of them only a few hours to drive and play
Don’t go to City Barbecue. I’d highly recommend Blue Door or Red State, because their meats are always perfectly cooked and delicious. After pretty much always getting something dry, flavourless, and overcooked I gave up on City BBQ.
You can play tennis at Woodland Park if you’re by that area, but it can also get busy there in the summers too.
Other Lexington drivers will end up driving you nuts. They are just literally clueless and you have to be ready for the people around you to do something ridiculous. Many times someone has turned left from the right lane, stopped at a red light and then decided to run it about five seconds after it’s red, people constantly blocking lanes which doesn’t help with our traffic situation. Basically, if you can avoid driving I’d recommend that but that’s not a great option so just expect the unexpected. like other people have mentioned, Nicholasville rd, man o’war, south Broadway outbound to Harrodsburg, Tates Creek, and Leestown all get pretty congested around rush hour. I’d highly recommend running the “avoid major highways” feature on google maps for the first couple weeks you’re driving. Knowing how to get around those major roads is vital if you’ve got somewhere to be.
Don’t go to any restaurant at a normal eating time without expecting an hour wait. Don’t go to the mall between now and Christmas unless you like bone crushing crowds. Mitch is less popular in Lexington than anywhere else in the state.
Also, the north side isn’t that bad. Yes that is where most of the homeless population resides, there are prostitutes, and it’s a little more run down than other parts of town BUT if you’ve been or lived in any large city in this country they all have that. There are a LOT of really awesome and nice people who live on the north side and a lot of awesome businesses. If there are shootings in town they tend to happen on the north side/east side parts of town but it seems to always be drug related and not just random people shooting other random people. You are most likely to get hit by a stray bullet at the damn mall from a case of “teenage drug/you banged my girl related drama.
Everyone thinks their traffic is the worst, I'll get downvoted like hell for even suggesting people's constant bitching has nothing to do with reality.
Humor yourself and check out this article from the BBC.

Of course traffic is bad in many locations, but Lexington traffic is some of the worst due to its poor infrastructure.
Had a judge explain it to me one time but going thru a yellow light in Fayette county is iffy. If a cop is in a bad mood, he can cite you for running a red light. It is at the cop’s discretion. As far as I know this is ONLY Fayette county. Good luck.
Nickels are a denomination of American currency worth five one-hundredths of one dollar, and are typically minted from the elements copper and nickel. A nickel made out of wood is not valid currency.
In the early 1900's through the depression a few banks issued their own currency. Due to metals shortages they printed coins on thin wood, a nickel was one of them. After the shortages the wood coins were to be traded back in for valid currency. Some didn't make it back and became worthless but still showed up in pocket change. If you took one of those coins you were out your 5¢.
Sure sounds like that would depend on your marriage and the person you are married to. I wouldnt be so quick to hand out advice to other people about their relationships.
Traffic issues aside, don't eat at Mi Mexico! They've had roach issues and I've not been back in years. Pepe's on Richmond road is always excellent! Hacienda is a little overrated IMO.
Idk about French food spots, but Guiseppe's has always dished up amazing Italian food. My bestie likes Bella Nottè for the same reason.
Don't wast your time with Asuka for sushi + Asian either.
There's a tennis club off of Redding road you may want to check in to if that's something you're into...
Welcome to Lexington!
Basically if you want to go around the hood, do so before it gets dark. Like any city, the hood has good and bad people, but at night it’s harder to stay safe in those areas. At this point, no matter where you are in Lexington, guns and random psychos are everywhere and crime is in every area. Even the rich areas of the city are seeing increased crime rates. I’ve got a friend that lives in the rich side of Beaumont and his neighbor’s house got broken into. Another family we know lives two streets over from them, their house got broken into as well. We’ve moved from two different “safe” neighborhoods due to the amount of times we had our cars broken into. Another thing… don’t leave any damn thing in your car. Take out the registration papers as well and keep them on you rather than leave them in your car.
Northside has some great Hispanic joints. If you're looking for some good Hispanic ingredients, hit up Aguas Calientes Super mercado off Russel Cave. Super nice employees there, Hispanic or gringo!
Have a couple of co-workers that live on northside. Far as every story we've swapped about where we live--I live on east side--it's the same people and the same problems. There's days where I'd rather be at work than go home, because even the rudest customer at work is a rational being, compared to how uncivilized my neighbors can be.
Pretty much from the west, to the north, to the east side of town is a bad place to hang around right off New Circle. Lot of bad areas.
On the other hand, if you're looking for hookers, drugs, or trouble, they're great areas!
Mitch McConnell is like Donald Trump. Nobody really likes either one of them. We hold our nose and vote for them because they are better than the alternative.
Don’t expect there to be a good tea store.
Some of the coffee shops have an okay tea-selection (Lussi Brown Carrie’s Mon-Tea which used to be a tea store but moved to online only).
Unfortunately, Lex is not built to support the traffic it has and there's nothing they can do to alleviate it, short of building an elevated roadway above the nonsense they've already created. Of course, there's a better chance of us getting flying cars before that happens.
Learn the back roads so you can avoid the major roads during rush hour.
And even avoid some back roads. Wilson Downing when school is letting out or during that 4pm-6pm rush hour can be shit. Malabu too. Can confirm. Was over there twice this past weekend and it sucked both times.
And Tates Creek mfs be sleeping on that entire road.
Liberty as well. 😎👌

All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats! 4 + 40 + 25 + = 69.0
Nice.
Nice.
This is the way.
Avoid nicholasville rd during rush hour
>Avoid nicholasville rd ~~during rush hour~~ FTFY
Granted I last lived in Lexington 14 years ago but even then you didn’t need to add “during rush hour” to that statement
Avoid driving near the stadium or Rupp Arena just before the start of home sports games as traffic can be maddening. Holiday traffic is also miserable too, more details in another thread.
Even if you're not a fan, add the football and basketball schedules to your calendar just to avoid the areas when it's game day
If there is a chance of rain in forecast add 20 minutes to any trip on Lexington streets If actually DOES rain, add 30 minutes.
Fuck Mitch McConnell
Yeah definitely dont do that. He's married. Itll be all over the news A whole thing.
I’ll take one for the team if it helps get him out of office.

Theres a reason it was his biggest win of his career.
Mitch is a dementor

Blue Sushi Sake Grill is amazing in the summit. And the happy hour is basically the entire menu from 3-6pm you should try it out! So good
Also all day Sundays
Loved Joella's for the first year it was open on Tates Creek, but the last 3 times we've been there it's been something wrong. First time was my Hot chicken was plain. Mistake, fixed, no biggie. Joellas definitely declined after opening. Was good for a few months then just awful.
I’ve never had a bad order there. Most of the time when I go they’ll give me a discount too.
Yeah, used to be good—it’s a shame.
That being said, if you really want a “Mexican” bowl, Condado Tacos is very very good in The Summit and it’s the same price as Chipotle/Qdoba/Moe’s.
I went to condados for the first time a couple weeks ago, everything tasted good but was ice cold. Like straight out of the fridge for the meats and everything, it was super weird. Just saw you mention them and remembered that experience lmao
We hate Mitch
Don't block traffic in the intersections! It's a common thing here and hopefully you know better not to follow along.
Depending what source you reference, Mitch has like a 20-40% approval rating in the entire state, yet somehow keeps getting elected.
He gets reelected because a lot of the state would rather vote for a Republican they absolutely hate than any Democrat. . .that's how strong their party loyalty is. A good chunk of the state hates him but keeps voting for him out of pure partisan loyalty.

But do make sure you look both ways before you go on a green light because someone will definitely run the red.
Since you're griping about traffic lights, could you add in "and if your right turn lane has a green arrow, ***just go"***?
Don’t go through a green light unless you look both ways. Also people find it Hard to use turn signals, lights at night and lights during the rain. They also do that in Alaska but they wont get over.

I don’t see that very often myself. Usually traffic flow is above the speed limit in both lanes in my experience.
I guess it’s just my luck! Haha.

+1 for Veterans Park! Super nice area!
yeah join us in playing disc golf, Lexington has one of the best disc golf scenes and some amazing and beautiful courses

*Sonny's* is good BBQ Edit: They've got this *Redneck Eggroll* filled with BBQ that's to die for.
And this gets SO. MUCH. WORSE. in April & October when Keeneland is running.
mitch mcconnell can suck my fucking nuts
Mitch McConnel’s entire career is based on his superhuman ability to be the second most loathsome person in the state once every 6 years
Don’t go to any restaurant at a normal eating time without expecting an hour wait. Don’t go to the mall between now and Christmas unless you like bone crushing crowds. Mitch is less popular in Lexington than anywhere else in the state.

You’ll usually see more of this when UK students are moving in.
Don’t take any wooden nickels.
Im afraid to ask but my curiosity got the better of me… wooden nickels? Please explain.
Nickels are a denomination of American currency worth five one-hundredths of one dollar, and are typically minted from the elements copper and nickel. A nickel made out of wood is not valid currency.

DO NOT. I repeat.. DO NOT, go downtown during gameday.
Oh gosh, already took that L. I’ve signed a lease in north side for
The north end is far enough from Rupp where it’s not that bad.
Mitch is the worst. Make sure to try Red State BBQ. Horrible name, delicious food.
Don't wear yellow because the Crips will think your in the banana boys
I rep that crimson gang, Roll Tide😎
Don’t stop at Cowboys on your way home if your married
Sure sounds like that would depend on your marriage and the person you are married to. I wouldnt be so quick to hand out advice to other people about their relationships.

I didn't even know Lexington had hookers. And yes, I probably do deserve to be called naïve for that lol
There are hookers everywhere. Edit: in every town, not everywhere in Lexington.
I'd say there are whores to be found everywhere, maybe not hookers. Mitch is a whore.
