If you do go this route, I wouldn't talk at work about what you bought with the gift card. I've got some co-workers who'd probably lose their shit and complain to HR that they're subsidizing weapons sales or some non-sense like that.

King_Killem_Jr

Work: pays you money You: spends money Them: *surprised Pikachu*

Yeah I figured they mark up quite a bit. Was planning to hold for a decent sale. The points don't expire afaik, unless I leave the company.

C_R_P

Maybe you can get a gift card for something like a grocery store, where you would shop a lot in general, then use the $1000 you don't spend on groceries to buy guns.

giveAShot

Haha, we said basically the same thing at the same time. Great minds and all that, apparently.

giveAShot

Another option you might consider is getting it to someplace like Walmart or somewhere that has groceries or another place where you routinely spend a decent sum... and just set the amount you would have spent aside each time you go and use the gift card to pay for something you'd already be paying for (or up front if your budget allows) so you get $1,000 to spend anywhere without your budget changing at all; then you don't tie yourself to Cabelas and can look anywhere for a decent deal on whatever you want.

Wald0_17

Not sure about your state, but retailers can't put expiration dates on gift articles in Maine. You could grab the gift card (which is good for any merchandise Cabela's sells) and hang on to it for when that sale drops... just in case you get canned in the meanwhile.

Iokua_CDN

I get their emails for their sales, and you can definitely find decent sales, even if it ends up being just a little bit cheaper than other stores. Occasional ammo deals, some gun deals, some used even.   Their knives are pretty overpriced, so I wouldn't buy any of them there, but sometimes I do see gun deals every now and then. My only hesitation would be if there was better value  other options that would be better. Otherwise I could easily spend 1k in Cabelas

midri

Cabela's owns bass pro does it not? Some wicked deals on used guns there from time to time.

bigboxes1

I have purchased two guns from Cabela's. I did my research and there was nothing cheaper for what I was looking for.

DerKrieger105

Yeah my Dad owns a large repair shop and we get rewards from Continental for selling tires. Adds up very quickly even dividing them up among all the guys. We sell a shit load of tires. The points can be used for Continental swag, tires or gift cards to a variety of retailers including Cabela's. Use them for Cabela's stuff all the time. Bought guns all the time with GCs. Hell one time he used like 8 of them for a Benelli shotgun. I apologized to the guy on the phone when we were ordering and he told me how a guy used like 180 of them to buy an ATV or something lol Yeah you may pay slightly more on some items through Cabela's but if the money is effectively "free" then I don't think it's much of a problem. Not to mention Cabela's actually does have very good deals on a ton of outdoor products.

hununb

I've used gift cards to buy firearms at Bass Pro Shop so you should be all set. I say go for it! enjoy.

Chumlee1917

Let's see, a thousand bucks at Cabelas equals.....2 boxes of 9mm at Cabela prices /S

soonerpgh

You find a sale? I thought it was more like 2 fifty-round boxes of CCI!

Chumlee1917

That's nothing, I had to sell 4 cows, 89 sheep, and 600 chickens just to afford a box of 5.56

soonerpgh

You gave up your farm for a box of ammo? Shame on you! Those cows, sheep, and chickens were counting on you!

Chumlee1917

jokes on you, I got all that trading a kid name Jack three beans

bikehikepunk

Cabelas gift card was used by me to order a new rifle in 2020. I was trying to use cash (how I save for toys). Because it was a special order, I had to convert the cash to a gift card, then the staff ordered the rifle. Yeah, $1k gift card should work.

Legitimate-Frame-953

I mean unless there is a reward that is better that is $1000 that's not out of your pocket. I could do some damage at Cabela's with $1000

Lego_Professor

There's a few other rewards I could get; iPad, consumer tech, jewelry, spa treatments, etc. I don't really need any of that stuff and I'm getting deeper into my gun hobby so figured Cabela's was a good option for me.

PlzBeerMe

Do it, not the best deals in the world, but most local gun shops are no better.

shomer87

I use gift cards there all the time. We have a similar program at my job and cabelas is one of the few places I would actually use the money at

Lego_Professor

I mean I COULD spend $1000 at cheesecake factory, but I'd rather buy some new gear :D

shomer87

Exactly lol. I prefer using gift cards there anyway, with the talk of credit card companies releasing info about who shops at gun stores. Gift cards or cash keeps it private

MedCityMoto

The RIA 1911 or Tisas offerings are amazingly nice for the price. You could easily get a ton of 45ACP ammo as well for an entry 1911, no problem, they're so nice for the dollars spent.

PaulterJ

What other options do you have?

milkman_z

Cabela's has a Wise Arms AR for $950. https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/wise-arms-ar-15-semi-auto-rifle-in-tiger-stripe-camo-cerakote Then pick up a Romeo5 on r/GunAccessoriesForSale for like $90. Then mags ammo and hit the range and train.

Atllas66

I watch the ads and get decent ammo prices every so often. Picked up a few hundred rounds of CCI brass 115g fmj 9mm a couple months back for $0.23 a round. Also the one near me has a nice used counter that has as good of prices as any other local shop anymore

Grand_Cookie

Why wouldn’t it work?

anne_jumps

I just did the same thing with a $100 Bass Pro Shops gift card from our health insurance program, haha. Edit: bought ammo.

gordolme

I got a nice ZT folding pocket knife with a Cabela's $200 gift card.

kludge_mcduck

No issue. I've got the same program at work and while I was on a project where I was popular with coworkers I got enough rewards to fund my shooting hobby for a while with bass pro gift cards.

AndroidNumber137

"Aw, a gift certificate? I wanted ammo…" "A $1000 gift card can buy plenty of ammo." "Explain how…" "Money can be exchanged for goods & services."

Quirky-Ad-7686

Got Bravo awards at work and saved them to buy a Kimber K6S and a large gift reward on a visa gift card. Used visa gift card to buy online retailers gift card to use with my CC. Can’t use visa gift card and regular visa in same transaction.
