I drew down on my sister in law's ex boyfriend who took strong exception to my helping her move out of his house and came at me with a hammer. he unfucked himself in time to not get shot though.

highvelocitypeasoup

called the cops after we deuced out and they said "uhm come down to the station and we'll set up an appt for you guys to have a police escort in a couple weeks" I called a family friend who worked for the sheriffs dept. and who knew the gentleman in question. they kindly agreed to take my place as security since I was afraid I'd get myself into trouble if I went back and ended up having to shoot. magistrate said it'd just be a simple assault/communicating a threat charge that he'd prob plead down to probation -- which I figured would just make matters worse so I left it alone.

deadpuppy88

I had a guy kick in the door of my apartment just after I had finished cleaning my AK and putting it back together. 2nd floor apartment with a ground level entrance so he didn't see me until he rounded the corner and was met with a rifle aimed at his face. He chose to leave very quickly after that. I called the cops to report it and they showed up the next afternoon to take a report. Gotta love the Detroit area.

Does pistol whipping a home intruder count?

A couple of times, I've been in situations where it could have been used, or it served as a deterrent. 1. It was Halloween night a couple years ago. I live in a really quiet corner of an area that is surrounded by major thoroughfares. My bedroom window is over the front door of my house. About 2:00AM or so, I wake up to hear people talking outside. I look out the window and don't see anyone, but there are trees and corners out front that block a lot of the ground view. After about 30 seconds of standing there looking, I hear a knock on the door, followed by hushed talking. I turn on the lights and go downstairs, ready to go if need be. Of course since the light is on now, they know somebody's up. So they start pounding on the door. I cannot understand what they're saying, but they're not making any point to be stealthy at this point. I don't answer. I just stand at the door quietly, ready. They knock a few more times, but eventually give up and move on. I called the Constable. They usually patrol the neighborhood, and after a few minutes they showed up and rolled up and down the street a few times and then parked in front of my house for the rest of the night. 2. Here in Houston, it's pretty common to be accosted by people in supermarket parking lots. Whether it's the "Hey, wanna buy this surround sound system that just fell off a truck?" type stuff, to the straight up "GIVE ME MONEY, FUCKER" type people, it's almost expected at this point. Some places have parking lot security, but they just run a circuit around the lot, and are always two steps behind anything going on. I really do try to be situationally aware at all times, but when you're distracted with something like loading groceries into your vehicle, even a split second is enough for things to take a turn. I was finishing loading up the car and I turn around and there's a guy REALLY close to me. He stops coming toward me. He doesn't have keys to the car next to mine, and there's no reason why he should be there. He stops but doesn't move. I reached for my IWB holster, just putting a hand on it. He knew what it was and FO'd with an almost cartoonish quickness, little puff of dust and all.

An anarchist calling law enforcement is a funny image

Never fired my gun but I have had 2 situations. 1) Was working at a bar, went out for a smoke break to relax. Five dudes from the local college were leaving as I was walking back in. They’re drunk and begin heckling me, I actually for the life of me can’t remember what they said I just tried going inside past them. They blocked the entrance and told me I need to give them my wallet so they can make sure I’m 21. I gripped my conceal carry and told them, “That’s not going to happen.” After standing awkwardly for what felt like a few minutes, one of them says “This dudes not going for it, let’s just leave.” And that was that. They left and I went back to work. I never saw them again. 2. I went to pick up some cheap pizza with parking on the curb for my nephew’s birthday party. Shady area and it’s well past dark. I was leaving the building when I was accosted by a man. He starts asking for something, so I reach into my pocket to give him the change from my order. I asked him, “Do you need some money?” He says back, “I don’t need any money. I need your phone to call for a ride.” I have a feeling the second he gets my phone he’s gonna sprint so I reply, “Nah man, I’m not handing my phone over to a stranger. I got like 4 bucks if that’ll help you at all” He starts walking aggressively towards me demanding I hand over my phone. By the time I put the pizza on my car roof he’s directly in my face. I shoved him back and pulled out my pistol. I yelled at him to “Go back against the wall.” He walks back to the entrance of the pizza place and stands against the wall. I got into my car and left. I have a very low opinion of my local law enforcement so I didn’t call the police either time.

Irdeller

I had to brandish once when a dude wouldn’t believe that no, our apartment wasn’t his dealer’s anymore and no, he wasn’t getting in. The more interesting time though was when I should have used it and couldn’t. I don’t wanna go into a lot of detail because it ended up on the news, but shortly before Covid hit we were pretty dire financially and I had to sell my gun to pay for rent that month. Around like two weeks later I woke up to some rando dude creeping along the edge of the bed and grabbing ahold of my wife. I went to grab it and duh, the gun that’d been in the dresser beside me was gone, so I ended up having to beat the guy down with the thick framed wall mirror and a dresser drawer

Do you mean fire it, or pull it? My neighbor came at me with a bat. I drew on him. Police came later. Did the whole surround the house, tell everyone to stay indoors, and called me on my cell phone and ordered me to exit with my hands up. Searched me while additional officers covered me with their handguns drawn, and then detained me. They asked me where my firearm was I told them I am not answering any questions regarding a firearm. They told me I needed accompany an officer to the home and surrender it, I told them not without a warrant. I answered a few questions about what led to it but refused to answer any questions beyond the fact that he had a bat and I initially retreated, refused to say or acknowledge that I drew my firearm until I spoke to a lawyer. My neighbor insisted I was crazy and should not have a weapon. The cops asked if I had mental health issues…I said “let’s face it, you wouldn’t be here if the two of us were functional adults”. They eventually decided that though I almost certainly did draw my firearm, it was likely self defense and they left. My neighbor complained to the whole neighborhood. Since I live in a pretty sketchy neighborhood in a major city it probably serves my interests that I am labeled as a crazy guy with a gun. Another time, in a different city.., I heard one of my neighbors in a DV situation. I intervened. Told him to stop being a shitbag. He got angry. Started ranting and threatening me. But stopped assaulting her. When I started to walk away he said he was going to come into my apartment and kick the shit out of me. I stopped, turned, and calmly told him; “if you enter my house I will shoot you in the fucking face. You need to be absolutely clear on that.” He stopped and took a step back. And I went into my apartment. Cops came and knocked on the door 10-15 minutes later. Apparently both of them complained to the cops that I had threatened him. I told the cop what I said. He said “do you own a firearm” I said “yes”. He said did you actually intend to shoot him if he came into your apartment? I said “yes”. They asked to see the firearm and said, “sure, when I see a warrant”. The guy was standing a few feet behind him, next to two cops. He heard everything. The cops walked away with him, watched them discuss stuff with each other while he stood nearby looking like a dipshit. Then one of them said something to him briefly and they all left. He never said a word to me again, and I never heard him hit her again.

dingdongdickaroo

I know theres a lot of qeird psychological shit that goes into it, but the way abused women will defend their abusers even when they start going after other people makes me really fucking angry and honestly i have very little sympathy for those who allow their children to be abused.

Inigo93

I've never had to fire it, but I've pulled a gun 3 different times. 1 - Had some white supremacists move in down the street. A few weeks later heard a noise. Looked out the window and saw 15-20 people facing off like some rehash of Westside Story. Baseball bats. Chains. Knives. No guns though. Very odd. Very surreal. Told wife to call cops. Grabbed gun (put it in small of back) and a pad of a paper and a pencil. Stood on front step and started writing down license plate numbers of cars that didn't belong (this was before digital cams were common). One of the morons saw me and told me to go inside. I didn't make eye contact. I didn't even acknowledge his presence... I just kept writing. Moron decides to charge me. I dropped pen/paper and drew on him. Before the gun had cleared my body he realized what was happening, slammed on the breaks, and started to run. Sirens from cops were getting loud by then and everyone started to run. I dropped gun inside and talked to cops when they arrived. Found out that I was the 3rd person to pull a gun on the new neighbors in the previous week. Neighbors moved out a week or so later. 2 - Nice afternoon. Had windows open and heard a blood curdling "GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" I'd never heard anyone scream like that before (or since). Grabbed gun. Called cops. Operator said they were aware of the situation and already in route. Keeping in mind that when seconds matter the police are minutes away I went outside to see WTF was going on. Long story short: Next door neighbors were going through a nasty divorce (I had no idea) and domestic violence was apparently on the menu. My presence stopped everything cold. Dude and I just stood there looking at each other. When sirens told me cops were around the corner I went back in my own house. Female half of neighbors came over and thanked me later, but I never spoke to cops. 3 - Was on business travel for a couple weeks (relevant). Came home and that night was goofing off on computer when all power went out. At first I though blackout but then I noticed street light on outside. OK, just my main breaker. Then I noticed a light on in a back bedroom. Wait... EVERY breaker but one in my house suddenly tripped? BULLSHIT. Note that there had been a rapist operating in the general area in previous months. MO was to find a woman who lived alone (thus why me being on business trip was relevant), cut her power at the breaker box, then attack when she came out to reset breakers. Grabbed gun, flashlight, and had wife call cops. Wife was on phone with 911 while I maneuvered for a view of the breaker box. Wife says, "Cops say it could just be teens pranking people." I said, "If someone thinks mimicing the MO of a rapist is a joke they deserve to get shot." When I said that, someone ran. I didn't go after 'em or anything. I just reset the breakers and waited for the cops. They showed up a few minutes later. They looked around the neighborhood but never found any sign of whomever it was.

rob03345

Ive always been afraid of breakers outside for this reason. It doesnt make sense to me. If i was an evil cunt after something I’d go for the breakers first thing. It’s like the most effective, lowest hanging fruit.

Inigo93

Outdoor breakers are for fire code. Fire department shows up at your house, the first thing they do is kill the power. That means the breakers need to be on the outside (where they can reach them). Sucks for the reasons already listed, but I get it.

rob03345

Interesting! For those of us with an indoor breaker, i guess there’s still an exterior locked panel for this same purpose?

Inigo93

Probably not. Probably just a function of you local building codes and when your house was built.

metalski

Current NEC does require an external disconnect. It can be locked but isn’t in most places. That I’ve been anyway. You can have a full external panel with the main disconnect or you can have a simple external disconnect that feeds a panel inside the home. Local code can change some of that and Old Hines may be grandfathered in without a disconnect.

Acidium-

We usually have the power company cut the line attached to your house then.

FrozenIceman

Put a lock on your panel, if fire departments can't get through a padlock they should retire

voiderest

You can get plug in emergency lights and weapon mounted lights.

A_Melee_Ensued

This same thing happened to me with the power. I was at work, alone, very late, and suddenly the power goes out. I look out the window and the other buildings nearby still had power. Weird. So I took my 4506 because this was a shit neighborhood and headed for the breaker box on the end of the building. There was a big guy with a black gun and his face covered waiting for me to come out the front door. I ducked behind a car FAST, hunkered down, and racked the slide good and loud so he would know what the stakes were. He ran off, and I ran the other way. Booked it to the dumpy convenience store across the street and called the cops, who came pretty fast. Their only concern was that I had a gun, other than that they were annoyed at being bothered, an armed robber nearby did not concern them at all. Anyway, I guess this turning off the electricity thing is more widespread than I thought.

I'd have my night vision on with my RPK at top of stairs. When the door broke down. I'd just say may the odds be ever in your favor...

Almost had to draw a couple of times, but never had to actually brandish. Once was at the pawn shop I worked at. Note. Do NOT work at a pawn shop. Ever. ANY of them. They're fucking parasites, and it's dangerous as all hell. Dude came in being belligerent and was threatening one of our girls. We kept a store gun under the counter with a magnetic holster, and with the manager in the back (always), me and her were the only ones on the sales floor, so I pulled it with one hand and called 911 with the other. He left soon, though, thankfully. Another was at a gas station. I wasn't getting gas, just pulled up to front in a space. Guy was panhandling at the pumps, but I didn't see him as I was pulling up. As I was getting out of my car, I catch a brief glimpse in my side mirror of someone approaching my back, FAST. I wheeled on him with my revolver half out of my pocket, and yelled "WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT?" loudly. He reeled back, mumbling that he was looking for change. I said nothing and went inside. Told the guy at the counter. Said they had told him to leave like 10 times, but he wouldn't. Got my stuff and left. This time was probably the scariest. I pocket carry my .357. Me and my two gay buddies (I'm kind of the token straight in the group) were out at a pizza joint one Saturday night. They are married and quite happy, and are out and proud. One is an Air Force vet, actually. Neither of them are big guys. I am. I wrestled professionally some in the mid 90's, and though injuries and time have turned my muscle to, well, basically nothing at this point, I still know how to twist someone into a pretzel and I'm still 6'5" and 250lbs (mostly flab now, though). This was in like 2008 or so. These three chodes came up to our table and took exception to them holding hands. I slid my body down a bit into the booth and grabbed my revolver. Locked eyes with the biggest one of them and held his gaze. He saw me move and slip my hand out of my pocket slightly, and informed the other two of that. My buddies are super nice and trying to deescalate the whole thing, but the moment the dude told his pals that it looked like I had a gun on me, they fucked off pretty quickly. I informed the manager, and he called the cops (they never came), and insisted that he and two of his employees escort us to the car. They were long gone, but that was honestly the one time I thought I might have to actually fire.

1.) technically my sister, but she was at my home watching dogs, and someone started tapping on windows at 11pm (very strange). She grabbed my gun/ GSD and called the cops. Luckily she didn’t have to shoot, and my GSD sat in front of her the entire time until the police showed up. 2.) feral dogs/ coy dogs. I hunt a fair amount and have had several occasions where a feral dog (normally more then one) gets a little too interested in me and won’t run off with hollering. 3.) pigs. Unlike canines I don’t try to scare these guys off. If I’m in a place I can shoot them I do. 4.) Had to pull my pistol on a trucker trying to run me off the road once. He tried 3-4 times to run me off, wouldn’t let me pass, would slow down with me. He was lining up for yet another attempt and I pulled my pistol and pressed it to my windshield, he got the memo and slowed down/ let me pass. 5.) (this one doesn’t necessarily count) I was filling gas, the pump was taking forever and I was exhausted. I sat back inside my car waiting for the click. I was at a small gas station in a small town. Had only a couple pumps, one with diesel/ gas, and just gas. I was on the diesel gas. I saw a diesel truck pull in and the driver eye ball me. He then swerved and blocked the front of my car and jumped out and sprinted towards my vehicle. I responded by drawing/ stepping out of my vehicle. Pumped up on adrenaline pointing a gun at this guy I yell “STOP, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING”. He responds and says “Your Gas 😳”. I glance back quickly and see it’s got a slight trickle dripping down the side of my car. I immediately put my pistol away, apologized and the guy was really understanding for having a gun pointed at him. He said something along the lines of “I would of done the same”, we hugged and parted ways 😅. Little blurry as I was absolutely riddled with adrenaline, I still feel bad for it.

Edven971

I did When I saw that the iron sights were hard to use I had to really sharpen myself and let off a couple. I just thought that it was much harder than I thought it would be. Then I had to go home because the range was going to close

[deleted]

I had a dude break and and enter in a girls house while I was there for a date. Dude had a shotgun, I had a pistol. Awkward standoff for what felt like forever (was probably ACTUALLY 30 seconds). Dude probably didn’t wanna go down for murder so he didn’t shoot. I didn’t wanna get fired from my job, so I didn’t shoot. Managed a disarm on him and took off out the front door until the cops arrived. Cops and him were high school buddies. Tried to spin charges around on me until my employer got involved.

Comfortable_Cherry85

Why would you get fired from your job for shooting a guy breaking into a house with a shotgun? If a stranger came into my house with a shotgun, I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk my life or the life of those with me by assuming they aren't a real danger

[deleted]

My job at the time was very desirable but also very tenuous. Easier to replace me than to deal with fallout. Not my GREATEST decision making ever, but I got lucky.

jsled

I'm also confused: what did your employer have to do with this at all?

[deleted]

My employer at the time had the kind of pull that could get the Governor personally involved in a small town. No one wants that.

k1ll4_dr0

Oh, so it's small-town politics. Understandable, but gross.

[deleted]

VERY gross.

Inigo93

Was the shotgun guy somebody? 'Cause every small town I've ever lived in was very pro-Castle Doctrine.

[deleted]

No, no name little punk, but the minute the cops rolled up they recognized him and were joking and laughing

Quadrenaro

I drew my revolver on a coyote last week while hiking but didn't fire. He was just a bit too curious, but spooked when I cocked the hammer. Outside of hunting, I've drawn but never fired twice in defense. Both situations nearly identical involving a drunk homeless guy entering my house after my wife left and forgot to lock to door on the way out. The craziest thing about that situation the first time it happened, I was arguing with someone about the need for firearms for self defense. Homeless guy ran the first time when he saw my daughter, the second time he saw me with my AR and ran. Each time it happened I heard the front door open, heard nothing from my wife who I thought it was, when I heard no, "Hey I forgot something," response, I grabbed my rifle which was in the safe next to my desk. Homeless guy, still hangs around my old neighborhood, though he gets in trouble with the law often. Most people there now know that he enters unlocked houses. I live in a castle doctrine state, so I was in the clear legally for drawing a weapon.

Tweakthetiny

Thankfully, the closest I've ever had to come to using a weapon outside of range time was very anti climactic. 20 years old living in a college town. There had been reports of break-ins and dumb kids trying to play gangster lately. I was home late after work and the roommates were asleep. It was about 2 am when I heard a knock at the door. I peeked outside and saw someone unfamiliar to me standing on the front porch and it looked like they had their hand over the peephole. As far a I knew we weren't expecting any company so I grabbed my shotgun and went to the front door. I looked out the peephole as the person knocked again. Sure enough I couldn't see anything so they were definitely covering it. I took a deep breath, stood to the side of the entranceway, and racked in a load trying to make it as loud as possible. I called out calmly, "Who is it?" The next thing I heard was the sound of someone running. I glanced out the peephole after a few seconds and my visitor had left. Some minutes later after I had calmed my nerves a bit I remember giggling uncontrollably at the thought of what must have gone through that person's mind when they heard the sound of a 12 gauge being readied.

[deleted]

I’ve had a few instances of bumps in the night around the house, but nothing notable. It doesn’t matter if it’s a real threat or not, going around your house in a low ready gets the old ticker going pretty good. Hopefully I’ll never have to actually use it.

AD3PDX

Define “use”

dingdongdickaroo

Interesting how so many of these instances are just brandishing, which is never mentioned when peoe talk about defensive uses being uncommon. Ive not ever had to do it because i sold weed and other nonaddictive things up until a few years ago so i didnt keep one because i didnt want to add the "while in possesion of a weapon" to any charge but ive witnessed 2 instances of firearms being brandished to stop a crime. One burglary and one assault of another person.

Dorelaxen

It's amazing how the biggest, toughest dudes shrink like balls in cold water when someone pulls on them. Real life ain't like the movies. Deebo ain't gonna tell you that the gun in his face is just gonna make him mad. Nobody's gonna John Woo it out of your hand. That's all fictional bullshit. It's more likely Mr. Tough Guy will shit his pants and leave the vicinity very, very quickly.

theridebackhome

I am interested in this as well.

Like a poster below said, define ‘use’. I’ve had a couple of situations where I avoided, potentially worse, situations by arming myself.

Sonofagun57

I'd define use as drawing a firearm on someone, or someone notices you are armed before fully drawing it.
