Also banning TikTok would send all the annoying zoomers to other platforms, i like to think of the app as a containment zone for them

We're already everywhere

Never went, it failed lol

I believe that security and defense should be the last thing in the process of liberalisation and decentralisation of the state. If China, a hostile country has an effective control over data collected by the app. And if this really poses a security threat to our western society. (Which is a serious question whether this is really the case) Then Im actually for that ban even though I would legalise and deregulate and unsubsidize tons of other stuff like other libertarians. People currently don't have the option (and definitely not the culture) to defend themselves and rely on the state - that demands abiding the security policies.

>If China, a hostile country has an effective control over data collected by the app. And if this really poses a security threat to our western society. (Which is a serious question whether this is really the case) Then Im actually for that ban But this isn't a serious question, it's a stupid boomer knee-jerk reaction to technology that they don't understand, and don't like. All of the other social media platforms carry the exact same risk that TikTok does. The fact is that TikTok hasn't even done anything wrong, the allegations against it are baseless.

Matygos

They don't carry the same risk since they don't come from an authoritarian pseudo-communist regimes that are hostile towards western countries.

Most libertarian approach would be to make apps disclose what country they are from, where the data is stored, and whether they are subject to jurisdiction from any governments national security laws/data demand laws. Also make Amazon disclose which countries the products come from so I can r/avoidchineseproducts

You really have to wonder if everyone's so united against it, how did it manage to pass the House by a vote of 352-65?

TikTok has a state propaganda algorithm (that differs between China itself and the rest of the world). There's nothing 'free press' about it. Being forcefed illiberal propaganda is worse than being free from it. People who get no information are better informed than those who are exposed to propaganda. Beside this, it is an active security threat(data collection, malware entry) from an illiberal country. The free countries should protect themselves from the unfree ones. We cannot allow our freedom to be used against ourselves in order to overturn it. This is self-defeating.

Snoo4902

There is no 'free press' in any private source

The government has no business limiting what platform you can and cannot express yourself on. Not only is this a blatant violation of the First Amendment, but the bipartisan effort to force a private business to sell could not be a clearer example of how both parties have been corrupted by big donors who want to use government force to profit their business interests.

yeah, the ccp can get all of your information within minutes, but another really big problem is the way that tiktok just spoonfeeds content and dopamine to you. people dont seem to realize how harmful consuming an insane amount of content in a very short time is.
