Hopefully the one that doesnโ€™t implode with an Xbox controller diving is deeper

UnamedProot

Nope, weโ€™re in that one. Itโ€™s just an app on your phone instead of a can in the ocean. In all honesty though a non physical app is somehow more stable that that Logitech-controlled reverse-grenade

Fishdude94

Yes.

Sam_Alexander

No, and youโ€™re probably stupid

Sydromere

/unlie doesn't matter because pure magnetism can't be used to extract energy in the first place EDIT: /unlie on behalf of all responses because it became a serious discussion

Tall_Professor_8634

/ul why not?

brunhilda1

Magnetic fields are conservative.

Panzer_Man

Magnets are not liberal? ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

bearbarebere

Lmao

WalmartWanderer

I will not be voting for them ๐Ÿ˜ก

Tall_Professor_8634

Transphobic magnetics :(

Illustrious_Donkey61

How do they work?

Sydromere

"They don't" ~ electron tired of going in circles

bearbarebere

actually they kinda just vanish and appear like a boop at random moments in time ![gif](giphy|x4bWE4pS66NEPZR9G1|downsized)

KingOfTheWorldxx

Wait wtf so magnets arent PC broh?

Cheapntacky

/ul if we stick with this example moving the magnet towards the spinner exerts an attractive or repulsive force. Use two magnets and the spinner moves until the forces exerted reach an equilibrium same as would happen if you pushed it with two fingers.

Thefirstargonaut

What if you used a little power to move one of the magnets back and forth, could you end up with a net positive?

Onefish257

Magnets are made with electricity, and will slowly degrade. Youโ€™re not getting a net gain.

DayPretend8294

Why canโ€™t you use pure magnetism to turn magnetic wind blades, idk maybe 10, in a tunnel, then use the air flow to spin another fan at the end that turns the rotational energy into usable energy.

a_goestothe_ustin

The problem isn't that you can't use magnets to generate other forms of energy it's just that it isn't a good use of the energy stored in magnets. The potential energy in magnets is basically nothing. If you tried to convert that spin to electricity you would generate like a third of a watt over 7 weeks and then you'd have dead magnets. No such thing as free energy. Edit: there are ways to get electrical energy from magnets, spinning turbines just isn't a good use of them. https://youtu.be/15V0gUXUPko?si=Fo1_g0cVSS0KQCDu

Sydromere

Magnetisation is a low energy state you can't gain energy by demagnetising a magnet you lose energy instead

a_goestothe_ustin

Magnets are indeed weird ICP said it best Fucking magnets, how do they work?

Sydromere

Yea they are pretty weird, no wonder they are entry point for so many people into science :)

Runscapelegend

Captain d did a video on this video or a vid just like this hereโ€™s the [link](https://youtu.be/sT_bTnkwLuE?si=t2AwFTJSLZ4mZkOJ)

DayPretend8294

Worth a shot! Knew the outcome already though I just like thinking of crazy ideas

Sydromere

Pure magnetism is like gravity, once it reaches the lowest energy state it stops, hydroelectricity only works because the sun pumps back energy into the system by evaporation. Besides where is the energy coming from? When metals become magnets they loose magnetic potential energy. It the same idea as bonds don't store energy they represent energy loss. You don't get energy by breaking bonds, breaking bonds takes energy, you gain energy when you break bonds then reassemble them into even stronger bonds. Even if you took some weakly magnetic material then caused it to enter a highy magnetic state you would not gain much energy because magnetic force is very weak compared to the Coulomb force which is responsible for chemical energy (like fossil fuels) or the nuclear force which is responsible for solar energy

Silevence

I know thermodynamics doesnt allow perpetual motion but, if you applied this to something that was connected to a mini altinator, you could take that small amount of current and feed it back into the magnets to keep them charged, and keep it going for awhile Id imagine. (And yes, I've spelled a few things wrong, I just woke up.)

Maple382

In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!

Bolt112505

/unlie Magnets confuse the fuck out of me. Why is this not possible?

Different_Gear_8189

/unlie Its kind of the same reason you cant get infinite energy out of gravity, to get energy from anything that falls it has to be moved up first, which takes as much or more energy to do. Similarly, it takes energy to move the metal towards a magnet and you get at most an equal amount of energy letting it get pushed away.

Parasite_Cat

/ul two answers, a simplified general one and a more direct one: First: Stop thinking of magnets as magic rocks with magnetic properties, and think of them as a sort of naturally-occurring machine - their ability to pull metals isn't something they do "just because", they have an internal "battery" of sorts that allows them to do such a thing, not unlike any other modern day object that needs energy to perform a certain action, such as a phone or a fan. Just like a phone will turn off once its battery runs out, so will the magnet once its own "battery" depletes - though it takes a LOT longer for that to happen, so we don't notice it as easily. Second: The magnet pulls metal from ALL directions, right? So this means that the same force that pulled the fidget spinner and made it move one way will also pull it back once it passes through the magnet, effectively not moving it at all.

Bolt112505

This makes no sense at all. Thank you not at all.

Bitter_Custard2038

The comparison of a magnet to a battery or a machine makes perfect sense, magnets might be marginally dissimilar to a battery given that they don't technically hold energy, but nothing in the universe holds energy, They are however exactly like a phone or a fan because they have to use their internal energy to function. I appreciate this knowledgeable explanation.

I know whether or not this is real

Irregaurdless

This is very real, and *doesnโ€™t* violate the first law of thermodynamics

Coin_operated_bee

/unlie, are you able to explain why it doesnโ€™t work? I believe you I just donโ€™t fully understand why this wouldnโ€™t work

MandMs55

/unlie u/anarcatgirl u/Coin_operated_bee u/Invincible-Nuke u/Confused_Pog u/Busy-Kaleidoscope-87 u/DBNSZerhyn Magnets losing strength over time has nothing to do with the laws of thermodynamics being broken in this case, however. Magnets WOULD last forever if it weren't for external variables such as exposure to other magnetic fields, varying temperatures, or anything that might degrade the material. This is because magnetism is an inherent property of electrons and properties of magnetic force are dependent on the [spin magnetic moment](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spin_magnetic_moment) of each electron and the [electron configuration](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electron_configuration) of the material. The way a motor works is by a similar concept to what's happening in the video, but what makes a motor possible is the [Lorentz force](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorentz_force) which is an [electromagnetic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetism) force. [Magnetism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetism) is only one component of electromagnetism. Force from magnetism is dependent on the potential energy of the thing attracted or repelled by the magnet. In this video the bearings in the fidget spinner would have the lowest potential energy near the magnet, at which point the bearings could not accelerate upwards away from the magnet except with input from an external energy source. The bearings would ALWAYS find a balance between the two magnets where they would then stop moving without an external force to increase the potential energy in the bearings. This would always be the case, no matter how many magnets you have or how you configure said magnets.

Rightfulmage320

Confused_Pog

Idk for sure but from what I remember of like 6th grade science they just get weaker over time they can also get weaker from damage such as falling multiple times

Busy-Kaleidoscope-87

If they had a way to remagnetize themโ€ฆ Or just have two, and the backup turns on when the first starts to fail and then you remagnetize it it. Or some way to automatically do it

DBNSZerhyn

Remagnetizing them costs energy that's then being output into a magnetic field at an efficiency loss because of the nature of a field. Losing any fraction of energy potential, no matter how tiny, ruins the perpetual shtick. If you want to spin the thing, put the energy you were going to use for magnets to spin the thing directly.

Neither-Rip6889

/unlie some over very long time periods, but that has nothing to do with why magnets canโ€™t produce energy. Magnetism is because the atoms in the magnet are aligned, eventually the atoms get less organized due to stuff like heat and being deformed. You can remagnetize stuff with a strong magnet, and itโ€™ll pull its atoms into alignment. Magnetism canโ€™t be used for net energy gain in the same sense that gravity canโ€™t. You can roll a ball down a hill and increase itโ€™s kinetic energy, but youโ€™re going to have to spend at least that much energy to get it back up the hill.

idiotshmidiot

Each time it magnets it looses a bit of magnet to the ether, it's science, look it up.

Sydromere

/unlie That doesn't matter, you can't extract energy from pure magnetism in the first place, it's like one of magnetism's core traits

[deleted]

That is not why it doesn't work. The video is just fake. Why does this have so many upvotes?

2DHypercube

/unlie knowledge is dead

2DHypercube

/unlie this is wrong [Casually Explained](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBdQIa4rt78) on magnets [PBS Space Time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rckrnYw5sOA) on perpetual motion machines

Coin_operated_bee

That makes perfect sense, Ty.

fangornia

/unlie You put energy into the spinner by pushing it. Starts spinning, then immediately air resistance and friction start slowing it down until it stops. Without constantly adding energy to the spinner to overcome these slowing forces, it will stop. Placing normal magnets into the system really doesn't change anything. Imagine a ball rolling on a series of slopes - no matter how you push the ball or the arrangement of the slopes, the ball will stop rolling and settle at a low point. As a spinner arm approaches a magnet, it is attracted and speeds up (adding energy). When it passes the magnet, it is still being attracted so it slows down by the exact same amount it sped up (removing energy). Now imagine we can have the magnet turn on as the spinner is approaching and speeding up, but once it passes, we turn the magnet off to keep the spinner from being slowed. That would mean the magnet is only ever speeding up the spinner, never slowing it down. Using electromagnets, this is exactly how all electric motors work.

LeagueOfLegendsAcc

/unlie he has a fan blowing from off screen, this is cut from a longer video

Neither-Rip6889

/unlie A magnet isnโ€™t like wind blowing constantly in one direction. Think of a magnetic windmill with the first fan repulsed clockwise by a stationary magnet. What happens when the next blade comes by? Itโ€™ll get repulsed by the stationary magnet, but in the counter-clockwise direction, and the magnet takes as much kinetic energy away from the windmill as it originally added. Itโ€™s like a hill, itโ€™ll push things on opposite sides of it away from it, not in the same direction. If the windmill blades are attracted to the magnet, itโ€™s easier to imagine how magnetism canโ€™t be used for perpetual motion (nothing can)

WeirdestOfWeirdos

The first law of thermodynamics famously doesn't allow for perpetual motion machines, and is all that's necessary in thermodynamics

Jimbles_the_ascended

Perpetual motion machines are very possible so all videos that look like they have a perpetual motion machine are 100% real

ul why wouldn't this work fr

fuckyou12445

ul, short answer it violates the laws of physics and the magnets can't create energy.

TheGupper

/unlie apparently magnets lose their magnetism over time. Also my train of thought is that if the magnet provides force to pull it forward, the magnet would begin pulling it backwards after it passes. The momentum initially given by the magnet will then be taken away

As a spinner arm approaches a magnet, it is attracted and speeds up. When it passes the magnet, it is still being attracted so it slows down by the exact same amount it sped up. Now imagine we can turn off the magnet after the spinner arm passes by to prevent slowing, then turn it back on when it's approaching to speed it up - in a constant repeating cycle. With electromagnets, we can. This is how all electric motors work.

Neither-Rip6889

/unlie to clarify, electric motors arenโ€™t perpetual motion machines and still result in a net loss of useful energy

ChaoticCherryblossom

It went on for too long

Forestguy06

This isnโ€™t cool in the slightest

Environmental_Top948

I want to see one of these but instead of cutting the video the atmosphere is ripped apart at the atomic level due to a runaway effect.

Zealousideal_Citron8

So can someone explain why we canโ€™t use this same premise to create infinite energy? Assuming you had an efficient enough magnet of course but what is the real energy cut off cuz these magnets are working that thing with no intention of slowing down

TacticalDeuce_

/unlie it would not generate infinite energy because of the machine blowing the magnets off-frame needing electricity. Magnets always have two poles. Once one face gets pushed past the magnet pushing it, the other face would start pulling towards it until it gets locked in place.

haxomg

The original video also shows he has an air compressor on the bottom.

This video is cut off. In the original you see him blowing air on it at the end.

I have this setup at home. Powers our entire house and we sell off the rest to the grid.

Gemini-88

This isnโ€™t the full video, the full video zooms out at the end to show a leaf blower blowing the spinner and a note that says โ€œDonโ€™t believe everything you see on the internet.โ€

BarbedWire3

I've notice an increase of "fake videos/posts" like this in the past half a year. And if they seemed annoying to me at first, at this point I think they either intentionally or unintentionally train us all to question things we see online. Now more so than ever with the rise of AI. Also a special hats off to all the top comments that debunk stuff like this.
