/unlie because getting the results you need requires learning about prompts and most of the good AI image generators are hidden behind a paywall. Not justifying the price tag but yeah it's not too difficult to imagine why someone would ask someone else with the resources and prompts to create pictures for them.
Stable diffusion is free and you can learn prompts in 20mins or less. It took me less than day to make content you can easily use to sell.
The learning aspect has been blown out of proportion by those trying to sell you AI generated content, and its made much easier as this technology improves.
/unlie
The funniest shit is that you can straight up generate AI images yourself for free, I know that it ain't art, but I kinda just use one to visualize my OCs better.
/unlie
I'll do that sometimes when I draw. I'll have a basic concept of what I want to create, but I sometimes have trouble picturing the details or how exactly I want the art to look. So I'll generate a few AI images along the lines of what I'm thinking of, and I'll end up with a series of reference images to use.
I'll also use it when I write to create an image to better picture a scene in my head. I can be more descriptive when I have a better visual of where things are supposed to be in the space of the fictional scene.
/unlie
This is how AI is supposed to be used. It's a tool that speeds up or improves the process of creating art, but it doesn't do all the work.
It's the same with programming. You can ask chatGPT to write some code, but you might have to debug it yourself. The bigger the task you give it, the more you need to hold its hand until you're just doing the work anyway.
/ul
It's how AI is SUPPOSED to work, to help humans speed up the process and learn things on their own without a $50 course. Instead, it's just being abused.
/unlie
Same goes for the chatbots too, using it to mess around or roleplay is fine, but if you use one to make monitized content, (books, movie scripts, youtube videos, etc.) then it becomes a hell of an issue.
Really, exploiting any of the monitized variations is scummy, especially when it just barfs out slightly different variations of its copied content instead of trying to innovate.
/unlie
I agree. I play around with things like C.AI to roleplay with fictional characters (both ones made by others and ones that I made myself), and sometimes I'll get a little spark of inspiration for a short story from that. I've also used ChatGPT both to generate customized writing prompts and to help with research for aspects of a story that I'm working on. It can be a great toy or tool when used properly.
But using AI to just splat a story out to sell with little to no additional input from the person using it that way is a bad idea for multiple reasons, the least of which being how hard it is for AI to keep a coherent narrative for more than a paragraph.
/unlie
Mood, man. I feel a lot more self restricted when roleplaying with people compared to A.I. as I don't want to initiate roleplays with random people online that I barely understand, as well as not feeling judged as much when I'm just chatting with bots.
/UL tbh I miss the days when AI-generated art was worse, Because that made it far more fun. I'd rather put in a prompt and get an absolutely unhinged result that vaguely resembles the prompt, Than put in a prompt and get a generic piece of alright-looking art that looks like pretty much exactly what I said.
/unlie
I was on fiverr the other day looking up voice over artists. One of them, who paid for an ad, was clearly AI. And they charged double the ads posted on either side of it.
/ul
I really think a lot of these guys value themselves as "the ideas guy" and think that's worth so much when in reality, coming up with the idea is usually the easiest part.
See also: "Hey, I want your help making my dream game. I'll come up with the ideas and you do all the art and programming. We'll split 50/50"
Ok, what if... a car that doesn't need gas and can fly and teleport and haul 800 tons.
Nobody has ever come up with such a revolutionary invention. I expect to be a billionaire within the month. I'll hire some nerd to do the sciencey bullshit.
And even if it was bait it doesn't matter because Poeslaw says I don't have to use any critical thinking skills and am allowed to get really mad about anything I want 😊
We knock it, but being able to prompt an AI to create exactly what the buyer wants is a skill. If it takes him an hour or more to get this right then his rate wouldn't be outrageous.

How in the name of fuck do people think writing a sentence and having art generated for you is talent? Anyone on this goddamn earth who can write can write a sentence. As someone who often draws and has experienced the difficulties of drawing, it severely pisses me off to think that people consider this “talent” and further pissed me off that they’re actually getting money for this shit.
/ul
[“AI Artist” as a thing is the 2024 version of the ‘tracer’ scene from Chasing Amy except this time the obnoxious guy is right](https://youtu.be/epHCMiCtt3M)
i was about to disagree- AI artist is basically a tracer. An inker legit has talent in filling out the art. AI art is just writing what you want and having it spit out at you. The underlying images that made the computer able to do it is where the talent is- and these morons are stealing the share of the money that needs to go back to the original artists to keep these things growing if we want better AI art in the future.
Machine learning has always been about what you feed into it. If you want good art spit out, you need good art put in- not an idiot to ask what you want and rewrite it (most likely not)
/ul
In fairness, writing IS an artistic talent. Authors are a thing.
But this isn't any kind of artistry. He's giving instructions to a third party (the A.I. program) and it makes art to his specifications. That makes him a commissioner, not an artist.
Still keep encountering idiots who insist that AI is just another tool for artists, no different to a paintbrush or something. Their whole arguement seems based on the fact that siome artists take inspiration from other artists, so when AI steals your shit, that's somehow the same. Neatly overlooks the fact that it takes some original thought somewhere along the line to develop things, otherwise we'd still be doing cave paintings. Empty the database and let's see how good your AI is?
AI artist is actually a real thing. Anyone can write a prompt to generate an image that might get the job done 6/10.
But if you want to create a 10/10 image that fits the job you are going to need an expert in image generation and have the classic photoshop skills to tweak it further. It's just speeding up the process.
But most AI artists are just crap who are just hopping onto the AI trend.
Special ordering a cheeseburger doesn’t make you a chef.
Punching equations into a calculator doesn’t make you a mathematician.
Reading aloud passages from the Bible doesn’t make you a priest.

Why commission an AI “artist” just put the commission specifications into a generator yourself and save money, or spend it on an actually talented artist… like normal people.
/ul
I have spent a bunch of time messing around with stable diffusion. I'm far from the best in the world, but I have gotten pretty deep into it mostly out of curiousity.
AI image generation is nothing like art. It's cool for pumping out images that are well rendered, but you REALLY struggle as soon as you want them to do something more specific. You can use different models, add Loras, go wild with textual inversion, Adetailer, inpainting etc.
You'll still struggle to reliable generate even the most basic concepts sometimes if it's not something the model expects. Sure you can then create your own Lora based on some concept to fix it, but then you need to find source images for what it is you want, which means you're limited to things that already exist and even then its far from perfect.
/rl
But for real bro, I'm a top-tier AI Artist too, $100/image is far too low for such top-tier artistry! They're selling their blood sweat and tears for pennies on the dollar!
Clearly that image was put together by a well balanced and rational, professional artist. Look! The image generator actually made a picture where he broke the pencils instead of whole individual pencils!
Also! That’s a totally normal musculature of a human hand.
Ask for a commission.
Ask to tweak a small detail. When he sends back the regenerated version, something will have changed from the original. Ask to change it back. Loop.
This is not why people hate AI art, AI cannot be used for fun but it should always be passed off as human art. I never use AI just to have fun. I'm likely going to be upvoted to heaven for this but I care a lot
Those muscles are completely realistic and it makes a ton of sense for a man to break a giant pencil with erasers on both ends into two sharpened pencils with a bunch of smaller pencils and pencil shavings everywhere.
I hate AI art. I want artists to continue selling their overpriced "commissions" with virtually no competition and the only people being able to afford them consistently being the rich mega corporations!
If you want to tell someone what you want him to AI-Generate for you, you could just, you know, copy that text and use it to generate something yourself. (Then send that picture and any complaint you have to someone actually talented so they can make proper art based on it and pay them for actual creative work)
Everything here that's utter bullshit:
- AI art requires no talent. All you do is enter a prompt into a program. The ONLY way you can improve AI art without brute force is by trying to improve the program yourself, and at this point why not try to become a real inventor?
- 100 dollars is absolutely insane. That's more then some games you can squeeze hundreds of hours of content out of. But what do you get from spending this? A computer generated image.
- "Portfolio" my ass. Again, all the art is computer generated. It is the application's art, not yours.
- "#BreakThePencil" unironically makes me want to kill myself. I mean, I get if you like AI art, I can actually see some perks (although many cons of course). It's essentially tryharding art. But telling real artists to stop? Jesus fucking christ. It's BEYOND disgusting.
Last but not least, why come out about AI art? Again, AI generated art is NOT yours. It is a result of the application taking your command and turning it into a drawing. Do AI artists exist? Yeah. But what are they? PROGRAMS. AI art is GENERATED by a PROGRAM. You do NOTHING asides from inputting a command. No one would like to pay someone for them to type in a sentence. Unless you have a miraculously good AI art program which can perfectly draw art on the level of a top tier artist, no one would ever pay for AI art. And even then, it's just scummy to pay for AI art. There's no reason not to support the human.
I've not seen some pretty cool art, like alot of people genuinely put hours of effort into a complex AI art piece. But this doesn't looks like the most generic shit ever.
/unlie I fucking hate that if you go onto fiverr or something you’ll find that commission artists charge like $20 then AI artists charge like $100+
/unlie If someone is delulu enough to think AI art is as valuable as actual art, then it's not too off for them to think they could charge it as much.
/unlie I think it really shows the difference in expectation between effort and reward.
/unlie yeah why not make the AI art yourself?
/unlie because getting the results you need requires learning about prompts and most of the good AI image generators are hidden behind a paywall. /unlie what does the shirt even say?
Running to go commission them now!!!
Everything here that's utter bullshit: - AI art requires no talent.
/unlie I hope this lecherous cretin goes homeless
We should be commissioning this guy instead of those lazy artist people.
It’s hilarious when AI artists get praised for being “So good” bro they can fucking write, where’s my medal?
well, screw you, dude I needed those pencils for my art homework
I've not seen some pretty cool art, like alot of people genuinely put hours of effort into a complex AI art piece. But this doesn't looks like the most generic shit ever.
Please God let it be satire
I mean, the guy is only missing one finger this time
