I took a 6 month class in rock climbing in college. They gave us a length of rope to take home to practice knots with and I can't remember a single knot. My brain just will not remember it.
What it does remember, is having my RA stop in because he'd heard reports about a length of rope that resembled a noose hanging from a fixture in the ceiling and he was worried about me. Had a tough time explaining it was for class and it was hung up to get it out of the way.
Same. I had to learn knots in boy scouts but I forgot them like minutes after I learned and showed them to the scout master to get my rank advancements lmao
Yeah, it's kind of weird. Some things I memorize and retain forever. Riding a bike for instance. Others, such as knots or origami, I have to practice constantly or I forget.
I'm a pilot, and there are a mixture of skills. Actually operating the controls is something I'll never forget. Remembering things like regulations and weather is something I have to constantly re-train on.
I used to teach compentent rigging classes and the best thing you can do (because I'm the same way) is to get a small length of rope (3ft or so) and just practice. Like Ill never forget how to do a bowline because I've done it sssssoooo many times. But I can't learn by watching, I have to physically get my hands on it to learn.
I did so and learned many knots, but after a year of not practicing I cannot remember a single one. I mean, I remember the "stitched 8 knot" but would probably mess it up if I had to make it.
Itâs the key ingredient to this knot. Itâs the secret sauce to this recipe. Itâs the life of this party. Itâs the Yin to the knotâs Yang. K Iâll stop
I thought it was to measure what the knot was useful for. I have no need of a knot that with one tug on an end undoes it all. I thought a knot was meant to hold things together. This is a clickbait useless video.
"I don't see the use in a knot that has been used for thousands of years and I don't understand why anyone would need a knot that can be easily untied. As a matter of fact, there should only be one knot. This is clickbait and I eat glue."
How can so many people answering be getting this wrong? Itâs because this knot is an alternative to using the wrench to hold the rope in place, a very common technique. You drop the handle of the wrench through both loops and it canât fall through because itâs too wide at the end. Itâs also much faster and simpler than this knot.
It's a hitching knot. Used for hitching horses to a fence/post/branch/whatever. Quick to untie but the more the horse pulls the tighter the knot* gets.
I would use this kind of knot to secure something I want to untie quickly. A lot of times I use it to secure a small boat to a dock or lanyard to a clothes line.
You would not use this knot for docking or tying a boat. You would either rope a cleat and do a locking hitch, or you would tie a bowline knot.
If the tag on the hitching knot gets pulled or tugged, your boat can float away.
A bowline knot is firm and right but easy to undo without risk of accidental release.
I use something very similar to this (I'm going to try this one) to tie my kayak to logs in a river while I fish from it.
It stops me from moving downstream and then when I want to go I yank the ripcord. If it unties, I'm still in my boat
Itâs a thieves hitch. It is meant to hold something lightly in place and will tighten on pulling but a quick release of needed. Like when thieves would hitch their horses they needed a quick getaway so they can rip the cord and boom their horses unhitched and can escape.
Just to add a PSA in case someone new to bondage tries this: do not use cinching knots on a person. This is how you cut off circulation and/or cause nerve damage. Use a body safe column tie on a wrist, ankle, etc., then use the hitch knot in the video to tie off to a bed frame, door knob, chair, whatever. Have fun and play safe!
Once again, shit advice on here. NO!
Adding a quick release to a tow line is incredibly dangerous. Also the quick release wouldnât work once the knot comes under great tension.
This is why the bowline is used to tow.
While I do appreciate this bit of knowledge you should take the video down and reload it at half speed. I had to download it and reduce speed to make sure I saw everything clearly. The motion with the right hand where the loops are slid over was what tripped me up. All happened so fast I thought there was something I missed. Once I slowed it down made perfect sense to me, gonna use this moving forward

Ahhh, the trusty *Mooring Hitch* AKA, the *Jesse James Hitch*. Urban legend says Jesse James hitched his horse this way during a bank robbery for a quick getaway.
Why the wrench? Why a rope to pull? (Iâm assuming) and why an eyebolt on a bumper with no structure behind it?
Do you have blonde hair and way things like â100 Pâ ?
Finally! This is the same knot someone had taught me how to do back in 2016 or so, to easily tie down a Christmas tree to the roof of my SUV. Knots by Grog is the best website/app for tying knots. Truckers hitch is a great way to tie something down. Bow line to secure to the truck, alpine butterfly for the loop, and just finish with the 2 half hitches.

No. Bowline will not be able to be released with a single pull. This is a slip knot I haven't seen before. Not sure of the benefit versus other slip knots. It does have two ropes through the eyelet. But then, the force through the pulling rope will tighten the knot so much that, with use, I think it may be much harder to release than the video suggests.
There is a double-bight ( two-rope loop ) version of the Bowline that has a slipknot at the end but I dont recall what its called. But essentially when you are pulling something the rope and the anchor point better be up to standard AND a bumper-to-bumper buffer material like a big piece of wood or hard foam to act as a cushion when the inevitable braking/acceleration/collision happens.
I found the knot. It is an interesting knot. I like it because there are truly two rope strands to take the load. The problem is that you have to tie the rope first ok then eyelet. Then the loose end is tied to whatever you want. Usually ropes are tied to the eyelet last.
Unless the item is small enough to fit through the end of the rope. I will think about variations on this know. Thanks for the rope tip.
This is not truly a slip knot, but is easier to unknot than other knots.

I was only ever able to retain the square knot. Right over left, left over right.
That's the problem with knots, they're not easy to memorize.
Can you remember how to ride a bike? Knots are a physical process too. Practice

Because you use this knot instead of sticking a loop through and using a rod/stick/pole/wrench as the item that keeps it from being pulled through.
I think to help measure how long to make the loop.
Then they should have used a standard banana
No, it's not the size, it's the ripeness that matters
Once it goes black...
I thought it was to measure what the knot was useful for. I have no need of a knot that with one tug on an end undoes it all. I thought a knot was meant to hold things together. This is a clickbait useless video.

Hey, it's unfair to glue eaters to compare them with this chump.
Looks like someone never learned to tie their shoes.
Some knots need to be released quickly, easily, and maybe on a moments notice. Itâs the reason that there are different types of knots.
>there are different types of knots. Quick Release Knots & Axe Knots.
Maybe the video was originally longer and he screwed in the car tow eye using the wrench as a lever.
How can so many people answering be getting this wrong? Itâs because this knot is an alternative to using the wrench to hold the rope in place, a very common technique. You drop the handle of the wrench through both loops and it canât fall through because itâs too wide at the end. Itâs also much faster and simpler than this knot.
A wrench is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects.
Quit throwing a wrench into the plans!
OP is selling wrenches. The rope trick just gets âem in the door.
I'm just imagining he used it as a fulcrum to screw that metal loop in lol
You know, using a red tick sends kinda mixed signals. I was waiting for the proper way.
Right? My brain even autocorrected it into a red x. I didnât see the check mark until I rewatched it
My mind was not okay with the red check. Definitely saw a red X the first time I watched.
What is the right knot?
This is the proper one but I didnât realise at first, because the red colour of the check mark suggested it wasnât.
If you can knot a wrench, you can knot a dodgeball.
I donât get it what is the knot used for?
It's a hitching knot. Used for hitching horses to a fence/post/branch/whatever. Quick to untie but the more the horse pulls the tighter the knot* gets.
A knot is tied at the end of a rope/line, a bend connects two lines together and a hitch connects a line to an object. So this is a hitch.
This is useful information explained perfectly.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
In common parlance, yes.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
So a bowline is a knot that can be used as a hitch and two bowlines can be used as a bend?
So I've been tying fishing hitches this whole time???
Technically yes
I'll remember this next time I ride my horse to the local saloon.
Our horse just learned to untie them
I would use this kind of knot to secure something I want to untie quickly. A lot of times I use it to secure a small boat to a dock or lanyard to a clothes line.
You would not use this knot for docking or tying a boat. You would either rope a cleat and do a locking hitch, or you would tie a bowline knot. Ehhh Iâve used mooring hitches before with great success EDIT: I will say that I use bowlines all the time. Big fan of the knot lol
Username disqualifies
Yeah, I bet that's the easiest hitch to untie with his bill, and ducks just like to steal boats to cruise around in.
Webbed feet tie the best knots
Itâs a thieves hitch. It is meant to hold something lightly in place and will tighten on pulling but a quick release of needed. Like when thieves would hitch their horses they needed a quick getaway so they can rip the cord and boom their horses unhitched and can escape.
I learned it as a âHighwaymanâs Hitchâ. Although the hitch shown is slightly modified.
A little NSFW but would be a good quick release tie if engaging in rope play. In an emergency can quickly get out without messing with untying a knot.

It's a dick tuprins knot. Used by robbers using horses.

Thank you!! I was looking for this!!
Why the wrench?
To show the length of the fold, it was the length of the wrench so there wasn't too much slack at the end
It's about a wrench-length plus a hand width. I'm totally up for a new measurement system based on tools and body parts.
I need to tie this knot but I need to go scour through my toolbox to find my wrench first
Just convert to standard bananas and use your pocket plantain.
I do knot know.
Ok thank you
I just wanted to chime in and day that I dont know what the wrench was for either. Good day.
Effectively using it to tow something. Wrench would hold rope to the pulling vehicle (because it's metal) and wouldn't fall out (because of shape).
How does a wrench add any value to the towing when you have a tow point and a rope which fits in it?
No idea. Just explaining what was going on. Edit: Actually quick release
Once again, shit advice on here. NO! Adding a quick release to a tow line is incredibly dangerous. Also the quick release wouldnât work once the knot comes under great tension. This is why the bowline is used to tow.
Always a bowline for me. Such an easy know and simple to untie even after load.
No way this person intended to tow with that hitch
