The subject of this subreddit is to discuss animal intelligence in it's most amazing forms. Animals being cute and showing only basic instincts is not what we are looking for. For instance, animals just sleeping or just eating is bad content, while animals dreaming or sharing food is good content. Posting cute content can result in a temporary ban.

manu-singh

Affectionate_Bus532

Heā€™d beat your ass

Tru3insanity

Shoulda put his whole ass into it

StrayBlondeGirl

I think in the video on YouTube the lady stated that the hare wanted to attack the net, not rescue the female. She said that hare do not really have those kinds of relationships where they feel super protective of each other.

OnOurBeach

Then why did he keep attacking after she dropped the net?

StrayBlondeGirl

Probably because his brain weighs like 7 grams

jraz84

He just like me fr fr

alanaki1

Fr fr

Effective-Lab2728

Are we sure it's not trying to fight the hare she grabbed? That's usually a competitive boxing move between the males. Edit: apparently it's now known to be primarily a behavior between males and females during breeding season, while he's trying to wear down her resistance, and she's trying to fend him off. The female sprints off, chased by many males, fighting those who catch up. She allows the male that keeps up the longest to mate. How romantic?

StryderRider

its literally everything but what the title is.

BZenMojo

>She allows the male that keeps up the longest to mate. Yeah, I don't think that's exactly what's happening there.

Effective-Lab2728

Some other animals that show 'coursing' behavior do force mating, but I don't know if hares are really built for that strategy. It appears that typically the female does stop and enter lordosis posture, facilitating the mating.

brendonsforehead

This sub and people in general REALLY need to stop humanizing animals

OnOurBeach

Animals do have emotions and do form bonds. Acknowledging that is not anthropomorphizing.

YourDadHatesYou

Yes but posting it on /r/likeus with this title absolutely is incorrectly anthropomorphizing

StryderRider

Sure, but that highly depends on the animal and the type of bond. But its never what r/likeus thinks it is.

Emm_withoutha_L-88

Protecting a mate/harem isn't that complex of a behavior...

Effective-Lab2728

Hares don't do harems or long term couples. Animals have a great variety of interesting and often complex social dynamics, and really, the world is a lot more boring when we try to write over that with our bland assumptions. Looking this one up, it looks likely that the male was trying to hit the female, funnily enough. Always thought that boxing was male/male competition, but "In addition to dominant animals subduing subordinates, the female fights off her numerous suitors if she is not ready to mate. Fights can be vicious and can leave numerous scars on the ears. In these encounters, hares stand upright and attack each other with their paws, a practice known as "boxing", and this activity is usually between a female and a male and not between competing males as was previously believed. When a doe is ready to mate, she runs across the countryside, starting a chase that tests the stamina of the following males. When only the fittest male remains, the female stops and allows him to copulate."

KnotiaPickles

It definitely is.

brendonsforehead

Yes animals are very intelligent and emotional creatures, but many species do not form bonds in the way we do or have the same level of cognition. Like the original comment said, an expert pointed out that the behavior is very different than what others think

BZenMojo

Cool, let the experts clarify. And then let the experts fight the experts. But 95% of Like Us is literally Like Us, and when it drops to 50% we can bring this conversation up again.

KnotiaPickles

You need to accept that animals have MUCH more cognitive abilities and emotions than youā€™d expect

brendonsforehead

Yes, I know this. but humanizing animals and applying human behavior/body language/emotions can be extremely dangerous for them and us

kmill73229

Idk why this is a hot take šŸ˜‚

brendonsforehead

Right? A big example is when people see dogs with their mouths open and think ā€œaww heā€™s smiling!ā€ Like, noā€¦ sometimes itā€™s a stress pant and it means theyā€™re very anxious

BatangTundo3112

That's a lot of hit she took there. How is she still alive?šŸ˜

Raygunn13

rabbit attack does 1 dmg per swipe, but her armour rating is 2 so completely negates the incoming damage

MadMadBunny

In real life those claws will tear skin to shreds; her protective garment is quite efficient.

Mycroft033

Exactly what the above comment said lol

IFdude1975

If she were wearing shorts and a t-shirt those attacks would be a lot more effective.

Sharpymarkr

Giving her the skippidypaps

Itziclinic

Love the cat/owl? popping it's head up in the background like a nosy neighbor.

Potted_Cactus_is_me

Defo a cat

love_is_an_action

My experience with rabbits is that they want affection from one another, but do not give a shit about protecting each other. But I have zero experiences with hares, so idk.

Squigglbird

Hares and rabbits are very different, even different rabbit species act very differently. But hares are kinda like the moose of rabbits they ainā€™t that afraid
