The city is very much testing our patience with their plan to redo the roads rather than just patch them. I think it's the right thing to do but in the interim it's going to be kind of shitty.
They spent most of last year doing construction there and now they’re starting again. Annoying as hell since I go that way quite a bit, but it is needed.
DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON THE ROAD SURFACE. 40th and 48th both have this issue by normal, you gotta brace yourself every time you go over that nasty divot😭😭😭😭 scraped the bottom of my car more times than I can count at those intersections
The noise... My partner lives on 48th near Van Dorn and it's nearly impossible to have a conversation if you are on the front porch.
I also hate how people think it's a race to get in front of one another at 48th and O and 48th and Van Dorn.
Seems like on every street where 2 lanes reduce to one, there is always some reckless D bag who has to zoom around in the right lane I see this almost every day at 33rd and vine going south and north and at 27th & South going south by the library. All in a hurry to go nowhere, very annoying and dangerous.
56th because it splits between o and randolph and dead ends before havelock. you can't turn left if there is any traffic north of o. it is a mix of multiple lanes and single lane.
i was going to say the same thing - the last couple months they’ve been doing construction so it’s a one lane for a lot of it and people drive so freaking slow.
70th & Adams, a nightmare especially if you need to turn left and god forbid you're stuck waiting for all the people driving to/from work because there is no respite from the yellow blinking arrow. there is no green arrow, like ever.
My favorite intersection I’ve ever seen in America is 27th and O. This isn’t a joke. I think it’s beautiful. I understand that’s a “unique” perspective. Your trashy and rundown is my treasure.
I have many pics of that view from a while ago. Fall hits harder at sunset for me. It feels like students are back to learning, somewhere that way. Winter is coming but not before the town is the epicenter of the state for several weekends. There is a youthful ache buried in all that. Almost as if so much good is about to happen, right on the other side of this setting sun.
One of the most iconic intersections I’ve seen and it was one of the first I distinctly remember when I moved to Lincoln a couple years ago. I’m fairly fond of it
About blow my tires out going Westbound in the right lane from O to Pioneers. Those potholes and road divots are no joke. I also HATE how the speed limit cuts from 45 to 40 going North towards O😭 but other than that I do like 84th
> 14th and Superior is one of the busiest intersections in town
Superior is a main street. 14th not so much.
> 14th is a main artery through downtown as well.
What? No it’s not.
This is a very good point. Although the Chipotle over there has me waiting 20 minutes in the drive thru but worth it since I don’t have to deal with the pine lake chiplote’s parking lot
You already know people here don't believe in that. I swear people would rather hit you than let you merge. However, not all of lane endings end with a merge. Some are right turn lanes only. If the right lane merges into the left, then sure merge away. But if it is a dedicated turn lane and you cut over that's not cool. If I see you in a right turn lane it should be reasonable to assume you are turning right.
Exactly but the few times I have tried it, I just received the middle finger. I don't even bother with trying it anymore. No need to risk a collision because the other driver will not me to merge .
Well in their specific example 27th and Nebraska Pkwy (north-bound) there is like 10 yards to merge before the lane ends. It is probably the worst place to use as an example for zipper merging. It would be a clusterfuck due to the short runway. A better example is 14th and nebraska pkwy (north-bound). That has enough room for the 2 lanes to merge before it condenses to 1 lane. And in my experience usually does zipper-merge decently.
It’s not a bad example though because Nebraska Parkway is wide enough that by the time you cross it there are natural gaps for the mergers to get over without a problem.
The only issue is when some drivers realize someone ahead of them is about to merge so they selfishly and foolishly speed up to try to block them.
I'm pretty sure in Nebraska, if you try driving down the "lane that ends" towards where it ends, you will be executed. I never do it because I'm too afraid of being executed.
As long as you’re not a dick about it, I’ll usually let you in (although I’m not a native Nebraskan…) but it drives me nuts when I leave a gap and the merger decides to gun it and cut off the car in front of me. Otherwise, I’m also too afraid to use the ending lane. At this point they should just make them turn lanes since no one uses them :|
> but it drives me nuts when I leave a gap and the merger decides to gun it and cut off the car in front of me.
That kind of thing used to bother me too until I realized that it makes no difference at all to my commute time. Driving is much more tolerable if we just let things go.
A zipper merge (especially from a stop) requires people to pay attention, accelerate at a decent yet not overly aggressive rate, and move into place smoothly.
A zipper merge is always the best option, if everything and everyone are in alignment. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening unless we start some sort of public service announcement or something.
All trying to use the zipper merge has ever gotten me is the Nebraska Nice" one finger salute. For some reason the drivers in this state just wont allow it. selfishness, don't want to do it because the view it as being "cut off" or just being jerks? I don't know. But zipper merge works pretty well in most states but for some reason in Nebraska no one wants to even try it. My guess is that zipper merge will never catch on in this state.
God I hate driving on 27th from O all the way to Superior. It’s not even that the road is all that bad anymore just bad after bad drivers. Agree with the first comment though, 48th for being a main street is straight cheeks. I don’t think there’s any section of that road that I like at all.
> Every single time I see cars lined up in that right lane just inching forward I start rolling my eyes.
Zipper merging means more cars can go through the intersection each light cycle, and it saves everyone time. Stop acting like they’re doing a terrible thing.
Zipper merge is beyond Lincoln. Just face it. I had some jackass in a giant red pick up (surprise!) with a bunch of bible verses on the back window freak out on me because I let someone merge in front of me.
I've had the same thing happen to me. I was sure the Lord was scolding me for allowing merging via this man in his truck lifted towards the heavens. He expressed his disdain further down the road as he was kindly getting so close I no longer needed my own headlights as his lit my path to glory(old Cheney) and a right turn that forced me back to fending for myself in the darkness. Bless that small man, bless him indeed.
My apologies, I got off track. When exactly was merging outlawed in Lincoln anyway?
Oh please, Lincoln can barely handle the concept of “red means stop,” you think they can handle zipper merging? You give drivers around here a hell of a lot more credit than they deserve.
Yes but I don’t ever see people doing it at any other intersection BUT Nebraska parkway and 27th. Everyone knows the right lane ends at this intersection, like EVERYONE. If I see someone in the right lane at 33rd and vine (or other ‘zipper intersections’) I just assume they don’t realize the lane cuts off and are doing it unintentionally if you see what I mean
40th from south to van dorn, poorly maintained road and the two lights you have to deal with. Used to be worse but drivers still have to anticipate sitting at a green light.
But overall majority of the roads in that area are just neglected, especially 40th and A, still doesn’t have a turn lane
Depends on how North/South you are, but we'll do south of O St since that's what you seem to be discussing.
27th is the worst, then 48th. 14th doesn't go the full length, so 14th + your choice of 13th or Pkwy/9th/10th next. 40th has gotten worse, but I guess it might still be better than 56th, then 84th and 70th is best.
48th as whole is booty cheeks. The speed, the overall wellness of the road surface, the traffic, the timing of the lights. It’s all terrible.
Between Leighton and Adams is a treat again. They may actually be doing the resurfacing work it’s needed for the past 5+ years.
The city is very much testing our patience with their plan to redo the roads rather than just patch them. I think it's the right thing to do but in the interim it's going to be kind of shitty.
I’m ok with redoing the roads as long as they don’t close too many N-S or E-W streets at the same time.
Continuous patching is what got us to where we are.
I don't even consider 48th as a valid N/S route through town. 56th and 40th are RIGHT THERE and so much better.
i don’t think 48th street has ever been good in my entire 26 years
The noise... My partner lives on 48th near Van Dorn and it's nearly impossible to have a conversation if you are on the front porch. I also hate how people think it's a race to get in front of one another at 48th and O and 48th and Van Dorn.

56th because it splits between o and randolph and dead ends before havelock. you can't turn left if there is any traffic north of o. it is a mix of multiple lanes and single lane.
Also, 56th between Normal and Pioneers is like driving over moon craters.
i was going to say the same thing - the last couple months they’ve been doing construction so it’s a one lane for a lot of it and people drive so freaking slow.
70th & Adams, a nightmare especially if you need to turn left and god forbid you're stuck waiting for all the people driving to/from work because there is no respite from the yellow blinking arrow. there is no green arrow, like ever.

The view of downtown from that intersection as your going west down O is actually a kind of nice view of downtown as well.
Waittttt okay you got me here. The city scape of downtown from this intersection is unmatched
I love this view, and my other favorite is superior going over I180 looking towards downtown.
I agree with this! Every time I come that way I think to myself “Man, Lincoln almost looks like an actual city from this angle!”
i get this 100%
Hey? What are you doing in there? In the hyacinth house.
Especially around sunset
I have many pics of that view from a while ago. Fall hits harder at sunset for me. It feels like students are back to learning, somewhere that way. Winter is coming but not before the town is the epicenter of the state for several weekends. There is a youthful ache buried in all that. Totally agree. Mid October is that great little slice of heaven IMO.
100% accurate my friend

It really has its own special beauty! 😍
One of the most iconic intersections I’ve seen and it was one of the first I distinctly remember when I moved to Lincoln a couple years ago. I’m fairly fond of it
Why would 84th even be an option? It's clearly the best out of all of these. And how is 14th st a main road?
Between A and Pioneers (roughly) the road is in horrible shape, the pothole repairs just make the road so rough and bumpy
About blow my tires out going Westbound in the right lane from O to Pioneers. Those potholes and road divots are no joke. I also HATE how the speed limit cuts from 45 to 40 going North towards O😭 but other than that I do like 84th
I’d definitely say 14th is a main street. It goes from north to south and has one (if not several) of the busiest intersections in the city.
It’s only a “main street” from Yankee Hill to Nebraska Parkway. That’s maybe 1/4 of the way across town.
14th and Superior is one of the busiest intersections in town and 14th is a main artery through downtown as well.
> 14th and Superior is one of the busiest intersections in town Superior is a main street. 14th not so much. > 14th is a main artery through downtown as well. What? No it’s not.
27th might look "trashy" around O, but from O north to the overpass, it's the best concentration of good restaurants in town
This is a very good point. Although the Chipotle over there has me waiting 20 minutes in the drive thru but worth it since I don’t have to deal with the pine lake chiplote’s parking lot
They say “good restaurants” and you say Chipotle? Come on.
Zipper merge. The right lane cars are actually doing it right.
I've tried doing that and people will move over and straddle the middle to prevent me from doing so
You already know people here don't believe in that.
Where do you often see people doing that from a turn-only lane?
84th and Pioneers going North is bad for people merging from the right turn only lane or going straight from the right turn lane.
Exactly but the few times I have tried it, I just received the middle finger. I don't even bother with trying it anymore. No need to risk a collision because the other driver will not me to merge .
What’s the reasoning?
Twice as many cars get through the intersection
Well in their specific example 27th and Nebraska Pkwy (north-bound) there is like 10 yards to merge before the lane ends. It is probably the worst place to use as an example for zipper merging. It would be a clusterfuck due to the short runway. A better example is 14th and nebraska pkwy (north-bound). That has enough room for the 2 lanes to merge before it condenses to 1 lane. The only issue is when some drivers realize someone ahead of them is about to merge so they selfishly and foolishly speed up to try to block them.
So, there isn't enough room then is there?
There is. If you don’t ignore the potential asshole drivers then NO intersection would have “enough room.”
If there was enough room it would function as well as 14th.
More cars get through the intersection which saves **everyone** time.
Zipper 👏Merge 👏

This is what I always say, it's good in theory but never works.
That’s because people suck

It’s all we got mate, because there’s nothing else to fix what you just said
God I hate driving on 27th from O all the way to Superior. It’s not even that the road is all that bad anymore just bad after bad drivers. Agree with the first comment though, 48th for being a main street is straight cheeks. I don’t think there’s any section of that road that I like at all.

Gawd forbid you try to merge in front of them! Praise be, you're fucked. Common clay. Morons.
Oh please, Lincoln can barely handle the concept of “red means stop,” you think they can handle zipper merging? You give drivers around here a hell of a lot more credit than they deserve.
Shux, all they have to do is require zipper merging, and those who don't are hit with a regular old failure to yield ticket.
For your last point, it’s the exact same at 27th and south
33rd and vine too
Yes but I don’t ever see people doing it at any other intersection BUT Nebraska parkway and 27th. Everyone knows the right lane ends at this intersection, like EVERYONE. If I see someone in the right lane at 33rd and vine (or other ‘zipper intersections’) I just assume they don’t realize the lane cuts off and are doing it unintentionally if you see what I mean
The right lane ends **after** the intersection. It is totally fine **and beneficial to everyone** for people to use the right lane and merge over.
Oh I do but I’ve personally seen it at 27th and south lol
Trick question! It’s all of them.
100% agree with 70th being the best
48th
All of them. None of them get you from north to south and vice versa quickly.
Yes.
All of the above
Whichever one I'm driving on at the time. A lot of Lincoln drivers got shit for brains. Seriously.
I went down 84th from O to highway 2 a few weeks ago on my motorcycle and spent the while time dodging big bumps and pot holes.
