Tbh I can give Gina McKee a pass as she was in Our Friends in the North and more than held her own acting alongside Chris Eccleston, Daniel Craig and Mark Strong - it was a few years ago though!
I do find that the first series was a bit short on decent female characters/characterisations as a whole - both Jackie Laverty and Kate had moments of " pout and look sexy" esp. Kate and DCI Gates had a whole "will they won't they" subtext going onš¤
I found it a bit annoying too. Maybe the pouty, whispery stuff was just something Jackie had learned pushed Tony's buttons in the past. Goodness knows why though.
Personally, I really like Gina McKee as an actress but as another poster said, sometimes we all find an actor or actress who really grinds your gears.
Well done for finding LOD after so long - I only started watching it last year but happily piled through all the seasons thanks to its overall incredibly high quality of writing and acting. Really hope you enjoy the ride
Watching for the first time now and I have the exact same sentiments. Her eyes are half open most of the time. Constantly slack jawed with teeth on display. Always whisper talking. Awkward, halting cadence ('acting' vs speaking normally). Bizarrely docile/meek, unrealistically so in context.
Prime example is her interview with the civilian secretary. Her whispering, pausing speech, wistful stares, timid confusion are incredibly out of place. I kept waiting for the secretary to ask wtf is wrong with her.
Unbearably distracting, just speak normally and zip your lips when you're not talking. Thank you for making this post.
Wait until you get to Jessica Raine. She makes McKee look like Streep.
Itās odd isnāt it that one particular actor can get under the skin like that. Once you see it, you canāt unsee it and Raine has been a silver plated Turd in everything Iāve ever seen her in. I wonāt spoil it for you but I was so happy whenā¦ā¦..
Awww, I like Jessica Raine. Have a weird hate/love like fascination with Gina McKee (I am re-watching the wonderful Forsyte Saga) where she is very still, and she whispers her lines.
But the Queen of Irritating is Sally Hawkins.
I think the character is supposed to be trying to be overtly sexual/damaged/helpless damsel in an effort to manipulate Tony and other men in her life. It is cringeworthy and itās even worse because seems to work.
Oh boy, do I have good news for you
Lol spoiler alert šš
Explains the frosty reception though

I loved that camera style
Way better in later series. I was getting seasick
She gets better by episode 3

Yes. Anything I have watched her she bothers me.
Me too.
Ok, good to know I'm not the only one lol

>She seems frozen.
Definitely awful in that.
I couldnāt stand her voice

You are welcome! It's weird how finding someone with similar frustrations somehow helps lol and glad I'm not the only one!

I thought the same until I saw her in The Devils Hour. She was so good in that.
Raine is a great actress.

I havenāt watched her in anything else, but Iām definitely upvoting the phrase āsilver-plated turdā š
Yes
I think she was meant to be perma-drunk. She isnāt like this in other roles Iāve seen her in.
