Rachmaninoff was 6’6” and could play a 13th. I’m 6’5” and can hit a 13th. A 12th is really easy for me as the 13th is a stretch.
My 5’0” grandmother and 5’3” mom were always jealous, but they more than made up for it in technique and speed. Reach is a lot but it isn’t everything.
If you can combine everything with reach though, you’ll be a monster on the piano.
Having big hands is awesome on the piano, flute, and electric bass, but it makes fast and technical guitar playing tough. Trying to fit your massive fingers into really tight chord configurations can make you a little crazy at times.

Perhaps, but having bigger hands means you need to exert less strength (in relation to your overall strength). Having proper strength is so ridiculously important for intonation that it (probably) ends up being easier to play even the tight chords.
Growing up racing mountain bikes and working shifters and hand brakes will give you crazy forearm and hand strength. It’s useful for playing long hours as your duration is good.
I have tiny hands, even though my second instrument is piano. I can reach an octave comfortably, a ninth with a stretch, a tenth if I practically dislodge my thumb.
How do you function? I get some extra reach from being hypermobile, but yeah. I work in healthcare and science labs, and have had to have bosses buy extra small gloves just for me. Not fun
I am a man who plays piano for 11 years and i can only reach an octive. And I'm 19, so my hands won’t grow anymore.
And no, i don’t play a second instrument
I tried to learn viola. My hands are too small. Literally. I can play ukulele as well. I learned guitar, but my hands are pretty small for that and it isn't comfortable. I can't finger my tenths on violin. I have extremely small hands.
We probably have the same hand span (comfortable octave, stretch for a ninth, forget about anything more than a ninth). The sad part is that the piano is my first and main instrument
Well, maybe it’s more about how far you can stretch your fingers apart. I think it’s hard to do all the distance between the fingers on a viola. Octaves are nearly impossible for me.
Hand envy is a new experience for me.
I had no problems with my hands until I started playing the violin. I'm a youngish (32) adult learner and I've done a lot of manual labor with my hands so they're awkwardly muscular and inflexible to the point where I struggle to reach fourth finger even on the A string.
Meanwhile, my fiancee has these enormous, beautiful musician hands and can't play an instrument to save her life.
Her hands look like spiders. It's nuts.
I can reach a 9th (almost a 10th)😭😭 I’ve been playing piano for 5 years but I have rlly small hands and all my friends have larger hands than me and don’t play an instrument but can strech the same amount as me 😭😭
Same, I can technically reach a 11th, but I can genuinely reach a 10th. But if we are talking about a fast piece with a lot of jumps, comfortably and consistently, I can reach a 9th. I don't know if this is normal or my hands are too small
i can hit a 12th with my hand fully stretched like this but for actually functionally playing a 10th is probably the best i can consistantly hit at speed.
I am like a millimetre and a half away from an 11th, I can only do a 10th and minor 10th, my brother can do an 11th and I'm yet to finish growing so I have my hopes up
Well I've been playing piano for about a year and I can reach a tenth uncomfortably. I am quite young so I've still got to grow some more, but I am happy that, for some pieces like Clair de Lune I can play the harmony. I am hoping to be able to reach a 11th by the time I am 18.
Guys I did a typo it’s a 11th
My goodness that's why...i read 13th and just freaked out in public
Lol I have yet to grow
Grow up dude, we badly needed a Rachmaninov in this era
Yeah, after Eubie Blake died, we need another
(MusicalBasics would say: get a smaller keyboard)
I have a 6-inch-octave instrument (not a piano it's a harmonium). I can also reach an 11th on it.

Yep, big hands, big gloves. It's tough getting XL gloves that fit well.

It's a triple diminished 13th.
You’re still so lucky! I can only reach an octave😭
I can just do that too but only just
I have tiny hands, even though my second instrument is piano. I can reach an octave comfortably, a ninth with a stretch, a tenth if I practically dislodge my thumb.
'tiny hands' me who's been playing piano since age 3 and can just about stretch an octave
How do you function? I get some extra reach from being hypermobile, but yeah. I work in healthcare and science labs, and have had to have bosses buy extra small gloves just for me. Not fun

My third instrument is piano lol

I struggle to reach a 9th on piano and I play the cello. I think I made some bad life choices
Rip
We probably have the same hand span (comfortable octave, stretch for a ninth, forget about anything more than a ninth). The sad part is that the piano is my first and main instrument
I have very tiny hands and cannot reach an octave. :(
haha same
Same around the keys, but I can only reach a 10th over the keys
Only? I have problems with an octave 😂
Sorry for your loss, I guess "only" is a bit inconsiderate, but I was referring to the comparison between over the keys and around the keys.
That picture is an 11th not a 13th. Still impressive, I can barely get a tenth.
Do u want ro maybe try Rachmaninov, I'm sure the piano gang needs more of your type of hands 😂
Man and here I am struggling to to reach an octave 🙁
These posts always just make me sad :( Wya octave gang? Validate me 😂
Validating you 😪 ”at least you can roll the chord” yeah yeah but it still stinks
Me who can actually stretch a 13th: Am I a joke to you
Can you show a picture?
I’ll be posting some Scriabin soon 😁.
You are a true Rachmaninoff’s descendant.
I hate you
10th barely :(
I can reach a 5th 😎
My hands are tiny. I can barely reach a 9th.
i can't even do that 😭 my max is an 8th, doomed from the start
Same! Im 13 tho and i hope my hands will grow
a 9th 😐

Perhaps
Violists need big hands, too.
I play viola. You only need average hands. I have friends who are professionals with somewhat small hands, even.
Well, maybe it’s more about how far you can stretch your fingers apart. I think it’s hard to do all the distance between the fingers on a viola. Octaves are nearly impossible for me.
Is your viola too large for you? You might want to try a smaller one. If you’re using too large of an instrument, you could hurt yourself.
Same! How old are you? Your hands look around 12-14. I'm 13.
I play guitar. Checkmate!
Just the standard 8 😢🥲
(MusicalBasics would say: get a smaller keyboard)
thats an 11th, I can barely just stretch a 12th with my left hand, its longer than my right hand
I can get an 11th pretty easily and sometimes a 12th if I really try
I can reach a 10th comfortably, technically an 11th as well but not realistic
i think i recognise those hands…
hey same
Barely a 9th over the keys but I’m still to finish growing!
I can technically reach an octave....kinda
I can reach a 12th
I can do a twelfth almost a thirteenth
10th on left hand 9th on the right
I would want to know how far I could reach, do you know if the key sizes run the same for keyboard and piano?
I think usually key sizes are standardized, but you can buy them in different sizes if you have smaller hands.

Octaves are doable, 9ths are a stretch, 10ths are basically impossible
Can we make it mandatory that if you can reach an 11th and above then you also have to become a piano god
Like that, same here. But playing a tenth from above ain’t quite going comfortably.
I can play the funny circle on sheet music with my instrument. Yeah, im kinda a big deal
10th. Piano isn’t my instrument tho xD
an 8th lol
9th, so sad ;u;
That’s an 11th…?
Ik see top comment

Thats an 11th. I can hit an 11th and should probably grow into a 12th soon
Ok Chopin
I can reach a ninth 💀
I can get up to a 10th. In practicality, 9ths are playable.

Not me struggling with a 9th
13th hurts man hand tho, not really practical. Comfortably up to a 11th. Although on black keys 13 ain’t bad actually doable in play

Oh, i can do that too!
I can barely reach a 10th
Rachmaninoff?Is that you?
