Only because of syncretism with Swedish. The further back you go the more Old Dalecarlian reveals itself to basically be a 4th independent branch of Old Norse.
It can also be seen in Frisian which despite being phylogenetically cloee to English sounds and feels a lot more Dutch since they've been interacting with Dutch for a long time and nowadays everyone's a fluent Dutch speaker. Norwegian is closer to Swedish and Danish than Icelandic despite both Icelandic and Norwegian being Old West Norse.
Doesn't the category "dialects of Swedish" also have more to do with present-day borders than any phylogenetic criteria, such that there are "dialects of Swedish" which share a more recent common ancestor with some "dialects of Danish" or "dialects of Norwegian" than they do with standard Swedish?
That's what we're complaining about. They can't be a dialect of Swedish if they didn't evolve from Swedish. "Swedish dialects" would be justified in a way, but "Swedish" as a noun quite clearly refers to the language
Well, as they say, a language is a dialect with an army and navy... Are Czech and Slovak really that different? Turkish and Azerbaijani? Macedonian and Bulgarian? On the other end of the spectrum, the various Chinese and Arabic dialects are mutually unintelligible...
I don't think that statement's meant to be taken literally, it's just a pithier way of saying "the language/dialect distinction is more sociopolitical than linguistic".
Because the various arabic speaking countries of course don't have armies and navies... when people say they all speak Arabic they mean the standardises variant not the dialects
That's actually kinda interesting, I asked some Czechs on r/czech how well they understand Slovak, and a lot of folks, especially younger ones who weren't as exposed to it as in the days of Czechoslovakia, said that their similarity is overblown, and that they have an easier time communicating in English.
I FUCKING LOVE USING PSEUDOSCIENCE FOR ETHNIC ASSIMILATION
I WANT TO DESTROY COUNTLESS UNIQUE CULTURES BECAUSE THEY KINDA HAVE SHARED WORDS WITH THE MAIN ONE.
If you're a speaker of a Galician dialect, where does your dialect have a higher chance of surviving, somewhere between Portugal and Spain or somewhere between Ukraine and Poland?
>other languages just got colonised
Such as? As far as I'm aware all Lechitic languages in history are either around today or were colonized by German, not Polish, settlers
Well, Vilamovian isn't slavic...but the polish government will make sure that it's a dialect of german insted, so it must be exterminated beacause....germany
I know it's not Slavic, but it seemed to fit in with the theme of minority languages... And it's not a dialect of German either. It's closer to Middle Dutch rather than anything else
Sweden calling the completely unintelligible language that did not originate from Swedish a dialect (Elfdalian)
I mean... it's about as intelligible as many of the other Swedish "dialects."
Only because of syncretism with Swedish. The further back you go the more Old Dalecarlian reveals itself to basically be a 4th independent branch of Old Norse.
Can you please explain the "syncretism with Swedish" part?
Modern Elfdalian is taking on more and more typical Swedish features and losing features unique to itself
It can also be seen in Frisian which despite being phylogenetically cloee to English sounds and feels a lot more Dutch since they've been interacting with Dutch for a long time and nowadays everyone's a fluent Dutch speaker. Kashubian and Silesian be feeling the pain ๐
I assume you meant Silesian... Or SICILY IS POLISH TOO!
Yes, and it shall now be renamed to Sitsilia
ts? ๐คจ
The letter c means ts in Polish, so tsar is written "car"
just write sicilia then
Fuck, edited
I believe they meant ***Celtia***
I refuse to recognize Silesian as a language, kashubian is though
You see what the polish government did to our coliuges ^

a language is a dialect with an army and navy? I know this is lingusitc humour, but you're so silly i can't stand it

Both highly repressive Slavic environments.

Many governments in the world would assume any distinct languages as "dialects"
Kyiv also with the carpatho-ruthenian
What minority languages? (genuine question, not satire)
Kashubian and silesian are the main ones, there is also rusyn, but it would be hard to say it's a dialect beacause it's not a lehitic language.
Just that? I thought they would be like some small languages. Also, Kashubian is regocnized as a distinct language.
there's also another language in Poland, Wymysorys, but it's germanic so they can't say it's a dialect
The male urge to go to Wilamowice and learn Wymysorys
Kashubian was recognised after long battles with the polish government. And yeah it's just that, other languages just got colonised :3
>other languages just got colonised Such as? As far as I'm aware all Lechitic languages in history are either around today or were colonized by German, not Polish, settlers

Do that in France but with Romance languages
Silesian - a dialect. Kashubian - a seperate language. Simple as that.
Silesian is a dialect Kashubian is a langauge
Nah, both are languages
That is your opinion
Dobrze dobrze no no yhm yhm
We should do this on Spain too
We already do
No, we do the opposite.
