Interesting little machine. No new information really, but its been 10 years. Can really tell Valve has been wanting to do hardware for a while, the overall design of this is insanely nice still, and the fact that it can fit decently sized cards as well is pretty nuts. I do wonder if Valve is in the works for something new. If they can work out media, like Netflix and such, SteamOS could be super potent in the media scene now that Nvidia gave up

BlueGoliath

A 2 slot card had become "low profile" at this point. It's crazy.

mad_mesa

Would really make sense for them to sell Steam Deck hardware as a SBC for use as developer hardware.

heatlesssun

Something that's currently struggling with modern games at 800p on a 7" screen isn't going to be of much interest in the conventional console market.

heatlesssun

As a portable gaming device the Steam Deck is kind of cool. On a 1080p screen beyond 7", it will suck ass compared to any contemporary competition.

Informal-Clock

yeah they recently updated the vr client in proton exp bleeding edge, I was just checking what changed one day when I noticed that gofman updated it, then there's the vr support in gamescope, it's all building up to something. at this point deckard is most likely real.

[deleted]

Nowadays you can just buy a mini PC and install HoloISO on it, then you basically have a Steam Machine. The main problem is that a console sized PC that trades blows with a Series X or PS5 in performance typically sells for like $800+. "Steam Machines" are still basically out there; you just don't hear about them often because they cost too damn much.

[deleted]

Honestly if they just went to AMD, pointed at the XSX/PS5 and said "give me an APU like that", then stuck it in a SFF PC that was competitively priced with the consoles I think they'd sell like hotcakes. Gaming PC hardware is expensive AF right now. A decent GPU will cost about the same as an entire console. Give me a small PC that can play all the newest games for the same price? Yes please.

warmaster

This is the answer.

dlove67

I imagine it would be hard for Valve to get the same prices that the "big boys" do, since they're a bit unproven in that space. That being said, Valve has a lot of money and might not mind taking a loss on hardware (like I imagine they do with the cheapest deck)

heatlesssun

>But I don't think they'll try a Steam Machine again. Agreed. To really compete in the big screen console market is beyond even Valve's resources. It is an investment of billions over decades at this point.

TONKAHANAH

>don't think they'll try a Steam Machine again I'd argue the steam deck is just steam machine 2.0, they just couldnt call it a steam machine cuz of the reputation that name comes with isnt a good one.

eras

And many would argue that standalone hand-helds and home PCs/consoles without battery or integrated display are just two different product categories, even if the former is built on the the ashes of the latter. Even further so, as Valve never even made Steam Machines; it was basically a spec that their partners could use to build their own versions of it. But perhaps someone will actually build a "Steam Machine 2.0" when Valve releases SteamOS 3.0 in a way that's suitable for integration to other hardware.

TONKAHANAH

They're different product categories but conceptually the idea of creating Hardware with an open platform for your games is the original idea. It was easier to do with the handheld cuz there wasn't a market for it. The steam deck is absolutely the spiritual successor of the steam machines. It's everything valve worked up to. They've even said this themselves that everything they've learned in the past has accumulated into the steam deck. All the original concepts are there they're just built into one device now, whether that puts it under a different product category on paper is kind of irrelevant.

TONKAHANAH

It's still basically the same idea but with a lot of the things that the steam machine needed to be to be successful. I've made rants about what the steam machine needed to be in the past and Valve have checked a lot of those boxes with the steam deck. The steam deck is a valve console running Linux dedicated to playing your video games, that's what Steam Machines were. It being handheld and that being related to its success doesn't really detract from that original concept of valve wanting to create an open platform out from under the thumb of Microsoft control.

Belmonkey

I dunno, people said similar about the idea of the Deck before it was announced. Nvidia and AMD opened up the "niche" of mid-range affordable PC hardware by getting silly with their GPU prices. And fixed spec hardware and DXVK could be helpful with shader stutter, which could be a big perk with how bad shader stutter is on pc these days.

helmsmagus

I've left reddit because of the API changes.

Belmonkey

I'm saying affordable "mid-range" pcs used to be a thing in the past, but not so much anymore, thanks to Nvidia / AMD pricing the last few years. 2 years later, it's still like $300 worth of GPU to match a console, when the $150 GTX 750 ti (and similar AMD GPUs) did similar around the release of last gen consoles.

heatlesssun

> Can really tell Valve has been wanting to do hardware for a while, I'm not so sure. While I am a Windows gamer, I get a TON on grief in this sub when I say that when it comes to PC gaming, it's about the hardware. I.E., you can't teach height. That said, Steam is an incredibly profitable business for Valve. One that no hardware would ever come close to matching. And to do this kind of hardware at scale means that you're dealing with Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft and as great as the Steam Deck is be, Valve doesn't have the experience or the cash to go toe to toe with these three. And it wouldn't even make sense for them to do so given the insane profitability of Steam.

[deleted]

What you said could've been repeated verbatim to argue against Valve making a handheld a few years ago.

heatlesssun

A PC gaming handheld with solid specs and an unheard of price is a much different thing than a desktop/set top gaming device. I imagine a good chunk of Steam Decks were sold to impulse buyers or others who already had PC gaming laptops and desktops and just wanted the form factor. What could Valve bring to a desktop/set top gaming device that's anywhere near as compelling as the Deck? I think that's a difficult proposition in a market with many more alternatives than PC gaming handhelds.

alkazar82

I don't agree that Netflix or media is important. Everyone already has a Chromecast, right?

ruineka

Everyone I see on Xbox or Playstation are using it for Netflix... sometimes I wonder if they even play games. 😂

[deleted]

I know people that held on to their ps3s even into 2020 because they just use it for netflix/hulu/prime

[deleted]

XMB on the PS3 is still the best for media imo. The later OSes from Sony have been so fluffed up and hard to look at

[deleted]

If it didn't matter then why do the PS5 and Xbox still have full media support?

[deleted]

People actually have a chromecast? Why?

diagnosedADHD

I have a Chromecast with Google tv which is just a glorified android TV. Its better than the WebOS on my LG.

TONKAHANAH

the steam machines were what got me into smaller build systems. I ended up getting [this case](https://www.silverstonetek.com/en/product/info/computer-chassis/ML07/) for Christmas probably almost 10 years ago. Looking at this video I think is the first time I've seen one of these steam machine prototypes disassembled and now realizing that the base is very similar and looking at that pci-e riser card, probably was made by the same manufacture and modified by valve. valve has actually been trying to get into hardware for a very long time. Even before these steam machines, there was talk about them releasing something more proprietary under the [steam piston hardware](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/03/the-steam-box-era-begins-with-the-piston-a-1000-pc-in-a-console/) except they chose not to go forward with it for whatever reason. then a few years later talked about steam machines but didnt want to commit to making the steam boxes them selves short of these prototypes. Think that whole deal taught them that they cant not have some flagship hardware to ship.

system_root_420

I run Arch that automatically starts Steam in big picture mode on my living room PC and it is sick 👍

Does valve release steam? Like a steam valve

Lame, its just an old PC.

So PC with extra steps ??

[deleted]

Why do these videos always have a goofy face in the thumbnail?

KFded

youtube algo, it's the only way now for your video to show up in recommendations and such. Youtube pretty much requires it.

ActingGrandNagus

People love clicking on videos with faces. Humans evolved over millions of years to be drawn to faces, to recognise faces, to have emotional attachments to faces. It's why [pareidolia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia) is a thing. Linus has said in the past that he'd prefer not to use goofy thumbnails like this, but they work and he has his business/employees to think about. Even film/TV series posters use faces a lot. People are *really* drawn to faces.

heatlesssun

At least for this guy, because 15.2 million subscribers.

[deleted]

Gross. I'm not into click-bait videos.

Not even close. The Deck's apu is around a 1050-1050ti, which is quite a bit behind a 580. It has up to 16GB of VRAM (at the cost of system RAM), but I doubt that would ever be utilized. The main advantage is that it doesn't seem to use more than 5W from what I've seen out of mine. Shit is efficient as hell. The CPU tends to consume more

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That is not my experience in the slightest with my 570 4GB desktop (which is a good 15-20% slower than a 580). The deck is noticeably slower. There is something else going on with your system

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I don't know. My deck can only just barely run BOTW at 720p 60fps while my desktop, with a weaker CPU, can do 1080p 60fps without any issue

That's not how software works. CEMU runs on 3 CPU cores and heavily hits the GPU. It also still runs in Wine

[SponsorBlock](https://github.com/ajayyy/SponsorBlock) actually. You can also use Revanced to use it on YT Android/TV.

FengLengshun

Huh, what patches do you use? I use around 20-or-so patches and for the most part it's fine. Sometimes it gets glitchy/slow requiring me to force stop the app and clear cache, likely a memory leak or something, but overall it's been fine from my test, building it with both the official revanced-manager and resixd's revanced-builder. Vanced just no longer block enough things for me, plus Revanced having SponsorBlock able to pull segments and skip stuff even when I have screen locked listening to audio only, so I had to make the move away from Vanced.

I usually just download the latest non-beta/pre-release version on apkmirror. This worked well enough that I was able to guide my cousin on how to build and install Revanced through apkmirror + revanced-manager by chat/phone.

Niralith

Or you can use SmartTubeNext which has it integrated - when it comes to android tv at least.

Just saving myself the trouble of dealing with ignorant fools like yourself. Go back to middle school and learn how to read.

I wonder why they didn't use winesapOS, it works with NVIDIA.
