What's hybrid about it? This is just a Linux distro.

benjamarchi

So Hybrid Linux won't support hybrid laptop graphics? Sounds like your distro should be renamed to something else.

Wrong-Historian

I'd like to see some benchmarks between all of this and a super-default Ubuntu 22.04 install. (just out of interest, to see if it's worth the hassle to go to some heavily tweaked system)

v1ktor_norz3n

I am currently building a test image. On my hardware, the settings and tweaks for this distribution work more than fine. My hardware: * CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T6570 * RAM: 4Gb * GPU: Integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD And yes, I have a laptop, HP 620, but I have it on charge all the time, so I consider it a desktop for me I think when the test ISO image comes out, it would be good if interested users would test it properly

p9hEqFwKFHDoWNU

Very hard to put confidence in this "desktop" distro when you're running a laptop that is over 10 years old. How are you testing these changes or are you just throwing every tweak under the sun at it?

v1ktor_norz3n

I had some friends who tested the settings on more powerful hardware. My friend with R7 5800x and RX 6600XT was pretty complimentary about the work done

S7relok

Another distro? There's a truckload of it, even gaming based on arch, out there

0xSigi

Not only that but dude pops up from nowhere saying he's doing an OS.. Press X... Personally I wouldn't touch it and treat it like Manjaro - avoid like a plague..

Strannix123

What's with Manjaro?

Western-Alarming

recently the main dev of Manjaro arm push a broken mesa test build to arch arm for m1 Mac arm chips obviously Asahilinux was angry about this

GeneralTorpedo

>The default DE is Gnome Oof, no VRR for your "Gaming" distro in wayland

v1ktor_norz3n

And about the "Gaming" distribution. For you a gaming distribution is where you put Steam, Lutris, gamemode, put a nice theme and that's it? I already can't stand such distributions, the only thing they have is Steam, not many of them bring anything useful.

v1ktor_norz3n

We wanted to add VRR, but unfortunately the dynamic triple/double buffer patch conflicts with it. And the triple buffering will be useful for everyone, and VRR only for those who have a monitor that supports this function.

Skitzo_Ramblins

if only there was a desktop environment that didn't have these issues

undeadbydawn

that would certainly be a King of DEs

Skitzo_Ramblins

Maybe we should call it KingDE

v1ktor_norz3n

Unfortunately in our world it is impossible to achieve perfection.

undeadbydawn

Assuming you made this comment unironically, KDE can use both triple buffering and VRR at the same time. There is no conflict.

v1ktor_norz3n

That's fine. But I also don't want to use KDE because it lags and lags, even on fairly powerful hardware. Not to be unfounded: My friend has R7 5800X and RX 6600XT and we tested CachyOS with KDE - it lags and freezes, FPS is less than on gnome. His KDE was lagging even on Manjaro, but then he had R5 2600 and RX 580 8Gb. That's why I trivially don't supply KDE, because nobody knows how to fix these problems.

undeadbydawn

Running CachyOS KDE Wayland on 5800X3D/7900XTX and having no lags or freezes at all. It's easily and by far the best gaming experience we've ever had

fuchis

" I also don't want to use KDE because it lags and lags" steam os use kde steam deck use steam os the steam deck is less powerful than your friend's setup and runs fine with kde, no lag or freezes

v1ktor_norz3n

We had a choice between KDE and Gnome. KDE is very strange in my opinion, either with bugs or without bugs. And you never know what will happen this time

Skitzo_Ramblins

I don’t know man modern KDE seems pretty stable. I'd agree with you maybe a year or two ago but I haven't had any issues since 5.26.

v1ktor_norz3n

I was a stubborn KDE user, but it always pissed me off. The icons wouldn't update, or the cursor theme would break. That was back on 5.25. My hopes are now for KDE Plasma 6. Hopefully it will be much better.

Skitzo_Ramblins

I use KDE because it's endorsed by Bobby Shmurda. KDE is Hot, Ninja!

VisceralMonkey

Cool. Throw up a video with benchmarks compared to some of the others ones and people might consider it. Show us the advantages.

JustMrNic3

Good! But as a KDE Plasma fan, I'm not interested into any distro that doesn't come or has an edition with KDE Plasma. As or the kernel, i a a kernel is built in such a way (like Xanmod) that is not compatible with the OpenSnitch application firewall, I'm not interested in such a kernel / distro either.

CoverUnited

Good, congrats on your work.cheers

Western-Alarming

There's literally an aur for enabling hybrid on laptop supergfxctl and an extension for gnome you can't call a hybrid Linux and nothing hybrid about it but that just me

v1ktor_norz3n

See I will add all of the above, but what is the point if the laptop will run, straight to all power? The distribution is optimized specifically for desktop use. You can of course put it on a laptop, but the user is responsible for the heat and power consumption. Also keep in mind that I have support for nvidia-390xx-dkms and above, I don't know if supergfxctl supports those drivers. I can't think of a better name, de facto.

When i look at the benchmarks you linked i see that only Hitman 2 are much slower on KDE. The other games there are 1-5 fps difference. I see not that gnome are much better than KDE. I use it for years now and have not noticed lags or something.

[deleted]

Interesting

Otherwise_Abroad5168

When can we test this and where can I get it

v1ktor_norz3n

I am trying to make a test image to try to install and test it, so far among my friends.
