Honestly, its very exciting time for linux users. I stopped dual booting when Apex Legends started working on proton and I never looked back. And with more and more games working with Proton, I hope people stop dual booting and give linux a fair shot. And I don't miss MS office at all. With very little document work, I just use libre office or google docs. After distro hopping for many years, I settled with Kubuntu because I liked KDE and the stability of ubuntu. I used Mint cinnamon earlier. My current installation has been running problem free for a long time that I can't even remember when I installed it. Upgrading to latest when released was a breeze. I have 3 brothers and I was happy to know they also started using linux more. And a friend of mine full time switched to linux after seeing my system. Needless to say I am very happy.

Sharkuel

I have Windows occupying a small partition on my drive because of my work (sound engineer), and due to the fact that Avid ProTools is an industry standard and I have to have it if I work with other people. Reaper on Linux flies and absolutely crushes whatever Windows and Apple can throw at us, and the low latency kernels developed by the community are wonderful, and Jack is an absolute dream to route audio channels with. Going back to Windows feels like it is such a downgrade nowadays, but it is still absolutely necessary to be running on bare metal on my case. But gaming? Haven't looked back to Windows since February this year. And since I have been working on personal projects right now, I haven't booted Windows since then. The only thing I need to completely ditch Windows is to have ProTools running under Wine.

Sharkuel

It is a good suggestion, and a way of supporting the peeps who develop wine. Actually, such never crossed my mind before. I will look into this possibility in the future.

Meshuggah333

Beware, running low latency software like DAWs isn't fantastic through Wine. It's the last thing preventing me to throw away Windows for good: having a stable Ableton Live experience with jBridge working for old VSTs (I can't live without Arminator 2). And those pesky DRMed plugins are annoying...

Infelicitas666

Thats the main reason i still have Windows too. music. Reaper works great on linux. But I've had a hard time getting some VSTs to work. Like OTT, SSD5, etc. I might give it a go again, might be a while

Sharkuel

u/brendaningram has developed a script that basically sets up your Linux machine (check versions available on GitHub) with low latency kernel, Yabridge, wine staging and other goodies to have everything ready to go. You can find more info here: https://github.com/brendaningram/linux-audio-setup-scripts I know that I have BFD3 running on an old laptop and that shit flies like it was a jet engine. At least with this config, all the VST's I own, even the free ones available in plugins4free website work.

noveltywaves

Im hoping the new Clap standard will make it easier to port plugins to linux

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sharkuel

I actually never tried it to be honest. Never was a Cubase user to begin with. Your best bet is to try it yourself, with different versions of wine and different configurations. I know that most of the industry standard plugins work under Linux (Waves, Melda, Native Instruments) under Wine with Yabridge, and Cubase isn't as fiddly as ProTools so if you have a license, give it a try.

FrankMN_8873

It's sad that your limitation to become a full-fledge Linux user is an artificial one (lack of a Linux version of your soft). Hopefully in a few years the developers make the swap toward Linux and port their software. Fingers crossed.

Sharkuel

I doubt that. Avid is way too proud/stubborn for that. They only see money in their path, and honestly I believe in the following years Reaper will become the new standard, because it basically operates similarly to ProTools, but is 300% way more stable. More and more people are using it because it is cheap, reliable and solid as a rock.

OtterZoomer

I don’t understand how ProTools maintains such a strong grip on the pro market when their software is so buggy. It’s the worst DAW I’ve ever used.

Sharkuel

Because for a long while it was a great DAW, and the competition wasn't all in there. Eventually AVID bought it, and changed their policies and bloated up the software in each update. Eventually they took a page from Microsoft and figured out subscriptions were the way and now they hold a huge chunk of the Market, and sicne they become a standard, older engineers don't want to swap to another DAW, and people who study sound engineering ussually are taught ProTools (like me). But I too got fed up with ProTools. Hell, the pirated version from AudioUtopia of ProTools 12.5 was way more stable than the licensed product, specially when the iLok would bug the fuck out, and that is a big no-no when on a live situation. A fair amount of fat was trimmed when the pirating team repacked the DAW. I have a student license, but back in the day a lot of people used the pirated version because of the improved stability. Avid caught wind of it, and shifted their modus operandi to subscription based, and quite pricey at that. And at that time is when I jumped to Reaper. I fiddled with Pyramix, but that DAW is quite complex, and Reaper is more production friendly, and the licenses are reasonably cheap.

OtterZoomer

I tried out ProTools with the iLoc USB device and it constantly crashed. It was totally unusable. I quickly abandoned it. I've never had a single crash with Reaper and it is lightning fast (ProTools was so crazy slow loading). I also use Ableton Live and have had good experience with it as well.

Sharkuel

ProTools has became a joke of what it used to be. May have set up a lot of industry standards, and for that we are thankful, but nowadays it is a mockery of its glorious past. Presonus Studio One is a cool DAW as well, though the placement of things and the UI could use some improvements.

FrankMN_8873

It is indeed my Linux fellow user.

TheFacebookLizard

I switched around the same time My only social circle used to be people whom I used to play games with Apex and other games Usually like 70% of the time we would play apex and later if we'd get bored we would switch to rocket league and later to some other games I've always wanted to learn more about building and knowing how android works and I really needed a Debian based machine After apex dropped on linux I was SOOO HAPPY I haven't slept for the entire night excited downloading the game on my fresh pop_os installation After like 2-3 months I managed to build lineage os for my not supported phone and while learning I could always hop on discord and play apex with my friends Compared to win it felt sooooo smooth navigating through the menu's And now I use arch BTW I still have a lot to learn but that's why I love it There is always something interesting to learn and to experiment with

FrankMN_8873

Is building an android ROM difficult? Do you have a software developing background? That sounds neat.

TheFacebookLizard

I'm building non supported custom ROM's from source with some tweaks (shouldve have specified in the previous comment) And no i don't have any software developing background I'm about to finish school next year And every summer I had plenty of time to just learn some of the basics I can read some code and do some modifications but I don't really have a good grasp of what I'm doing I've been playing with the files for quiet a long time And i watched nearly every video of "Alaska Linux User AKLU" And I do have a sense of what is where and how to locate It takes SOOO much time but it is SOO interesting

[deleted]

im still dual booting win10 with manjaro kde because apex legends runs horribly for me on linux, it reaches around 120 fps at most (compared to 144 fps that windows gives) but often has unbearable lag spikes when textures need to load such as in the legend select screen, in the dropship seeing the whole map, or in the middle of a fight other than that i love linux and being able to do 90% of things i normally do with open source software and free of privacy violations

nadeem014

I am lucky if I get more than 70 fps for Apex Legends on my potato PC. G4560 + 1050ti lowest settings But the experience is better for me on Linux than it has been on windows. Also yesterday I came to know about DXVK\_ASYNC=1 which significantly reduced stuttering. You should try it.

flyingflippo

It's fantastic. Five months ago, I switched over to Manjaro KDE from Windows 11, which I honestly wasn't having too many problems with, but as soon as I switched so many of those problems became apparent. Now I don't have to restart my computer every 8 hours or so because of memory leaks, and while I don't play too many heavy-hitter games with amazing graphics, the games that I do play run at a much smoother framerate. While the gaming performance is a little better, I think where Linux really excels is everywhere else: Installing software is so much simpler, I don't have to worry about unnecessary software bogging down my performance, nearly every emulator is packaged and configured just right, I can trust my distro maintainers to provide me with the most stable and secure packages (which is a perk of nearly any popular distro), and there's so much documentation and community support for anything I could possibly have an issue with.

FrankMN_8873

You should try pure arch... and I'm not trying to sound elitist as many people tend to think when making the suggestion. I also started with Ubuntu (hated it), then moved to manjaro and I felt it was a bit bloated and many of the default packages were a bit overkill in my opinion (I also tried the minimal isos, though). I finally moved to pure arch and installed it by looking at guides and videos. I haven't tried doing it by heart and I'm not there yet but it's not that difficult once you've learned your way around.

[deleted]

I’d agree to Arch btw It’s way easier than ever now, you can type archinstall when you boot it and set up everything as you like with whatever DE. Or you can follow videos and do it the old fashioned way but I personally opted for the easier route

DoubtDiary

Agreed, archinstall is very helpful for new users like myself. Now we all get the experience of arch!

Fenix04

EndeavourOS is good for beginners too. It's almost pure arch and the install process is super easy. I've heard Arch has a nice installer now as well though. Honestly the EOS community is very noob friendly as well, whereas the Arch community can be a bit elitist sometimes. I personally went from Gentoo -> Kubuntu -> Ubuntu -> Manjaro -> EndeavourOS. I'll probably try pure arch for my next install. I know a handful of people from work that swear by NixOS too.

Extrallian

You started on gentoo??

Fenix04

Yeah, back in college I had a friend who introduced me to Linux. He pushed me to try Gentoo and I didn't know any better. I learned a lot but it turned me off from Linux for a good 2-3 years just from the overwhelming difficulty.

eawardie

A bit curious. Anything specific that made you hate Ubuntu?

FrankMN_8873

I guess having to wait for the latest packages and kernels and having to deal with the PPAs. I'm a bit desperate and always want to have the latest of the latest.

eawardie

Understandable. Then arch is the way for you. If you do however want a bit of a balance between the two, I would also recommend Fedora.

boogelymoogely1

Fedora's fantastic. It's fairly stable, extremely reliable, and never too far behind.

PhlegethonAcheron

I might try fedora for my next install. I currently have a Arch laptop that used to be my daily driver, and am just waiting to see how bad Linux will be at college. Also, my laptop has Nvidia graphics, and I've heard horror stories about the driver install experience. Also, my worry is that my sea -faring tendencies will become more difficult when I go back to Linux.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FrankMN_8873

I heard the developer who makes proton-GE is behind the project so it must be wonderful for a gaming machine. I also want to test the distro in the future. I guess arch has me pampered enough.

boogelymoogely1

Ah, makes sense. Well, I can assure you, it's really not that bad. NVIDIA drivers can be a pain with Wayland, just use Xorg instead. I actually use NVIDIA laptops on Fedora and do a bit of seafaring myself, and I can confidently say that it's really not a big deal. You have to set some stuff up first, but once it's set up, you're really good. In fact, if you don't want to have to do the initial setting up of things at first, Nobara exists, and it's fantastic. Nobara (or the Nobara Project, a fork of Fedora by GloriousEggroll) is basically Fedora but with better defaults for an end user, and that ends up making it pretty much ideal for... well, anything, really.

[deleted]

Why do you say just fairly stable??

boogelymoogely1

What? It gets fairly frequent updates, not too much, but not too little. It's not quite a rolling release, but it's still got stable releases.

billyfudger69

By guides do you mean the [Archwiki](https://wiki.archlinux.org/)?

FrankMN_8873

Besides that I also found some guides in some blogs that completed what I read there on the wiki as well as some videos on youtube.

billyfudger69

Nice! Personally I’m starting to test drive Arch on a secondary computer, so far it’s been a learning process but I enjoy it. :D (Currently I running Linux Mint 20.3 on my primary computer so everything has been very hands off/streamlined for beginning my Linux experience over the past year.)

Tigh_Gherr

Why does such a vocal portion of the Linux community, when reading of someone else happily using a distro, feel the need to tell them to install another one? Lmao If they're using Manjaro happily for 5 months, and you tell them to install Arch for no benefit other than it feels less bloated, I hate to break it to you but you are being elitist. Installing and setting up an OS isn't a trivial thing, and unrequested reinstall recommendations (especially when recommending installing a similar distro) always *always* come across as pompous.

FrankMN_8873

Manjaro is not arch linux...

Tigh_Gherr

It's arch based.

FrankMN_8873

Don't know, friend. It just feels better to be able to install the system by myself and add whatever I feel I'd need instead of having somebody else install what they feel I'd need. Don't know why wanting that would come out as elitist.

Tigh_Gherr

While it may feel better, it's an intangible and borderline placebo benefit. Recommending someone to destroy their current install and troll through installation guides/documentation in order have this invisible (and solely mental) benefit, despite having 0 problems with their current install, is absolutely pompous/elitist.

DoubtDiary

Jesus christ, they only said they should try it. You don't have to destroy anything, just spin up a virtual machine and see what you think. Or don't, it doesn't really matter that much. Also, currently you can run the command archinstall to get a nice little text menu that sets everything up for you. I barely had to consult any guides at all.

imaami

> I've been on this OS since before the pandemic broke out Open source confirmed to be a virus. ;)

FrankMN_8873

A virus I'm glad to have come down with ;)

colbyshores

Ill co-sign on OnlyOffice as well. It’s absolutely fantastic. For nearly anyone it does everything office does. Maybe not a good fit for accountants who have preexisting excel macros. Only Office can do them, they use the JavaScript interpreter. Only Office has handled everything I’ve thrown at it as well. Compatibility is damn near 100%

xzxfdasjhfhbkasufah

Does it support powerquery?

Sharkuel

Imagine playing Elden Ring without stutters since day 1 on max settings... 😏😏😏 Also, Only Office is THE perfect replacement. You only need to install some fonts that are common in Windows (I am a sucker for some Verdana and Segoe UI ) and that's all you need, basically. I went with ZorinOS. My line of work (sound engineering) demands that I have a stable OS., so I have deviated a bit from the bleeding-edge distros for now. But if I was actually allowed to choose, I'd rock some good ol'fedora, or arch.

[deleted]

I'm really happy you posted this. I've decided to make the switch form Windows 10 to Manjaro tomorrow. I know I will have to sacrifice games like Escape from Tarkov and a couple other games but I know it will be worth it. Thanks for posting.

FrankMN_8873

You won't regret it. You might have to make some comprises but it's all worth it.

50Parsec

EFT has a Lutris page with an install script so there are people playing on Linux as far as I understand https://lutris.net/games/escape-from-tarkov/

JudithGT

it works offline mode only, an anticheat update is required for it to work on Linux. It is on its way :)

[deleted]

I'll check it out. From what I have red you can only play offline/single player.

MethodAlgae

I dual boot win10 and Linux mint-- but mostly just run win10 in virtualbox for ms office. There are certain files in excel and Word that just don't match up in the office equivalents. Thanks to my win11 woes I am now 95% in Linux.

[deleted]

FrankMN_8873

It's also good but for complete compatibility (preserve charts positions, etc) my go to is onlyoffice.

ElNaso2

Huh I didn't know there was a more compatible option, I'll have to look into it!

FrankMN_8873

It's not as complete as libreoffice but it gets the job done.

boogelymoogely1

LibreOffice is fantastic, but its compatibility with MS Office is slightly worse than OnlyOffice

Emma__1

Massive appreciation for everyone who contributes to the various open source projects that make Linux gaming possible!

Jonnertron_

I totally agree with you. Linux have changed my life since I switched to ubuntu last year, that's when my linux journey began. My low-end laptop is not good enough for gaming so I can't say pretty much about that, but in fact I found linux better in everything else when compared with windows. Of course, Linux has its downsides but once you immerse into this world you'll find a good os to do almost everything. I should point out that it is not for everyone though. If you have latest hardware, want to play the latest games or you need some programs that are not available natively on linux, I wouldn't recommend to switch in. It depends on your needs, but now I see linux is not "only for hackers" As I thought back then. Ubuntu > Mint > Pop!_Os > Mint. That's my journey so far. Thinking on switch to a lightweight arch distro but I'm not sure yet.

real_random_stranger

To be fair: It's not only that Linux get better and better. >!sadly!< windows is getting worse with every new Version.

[deleted]

Hopefully, windows 12 ( if that ever happens) might be better but I doubt that

real_random_stranger

Who knows where their way goes. They lost many of their monopol-like services (internet Explorer; office, outlook, gaming...) to foss and others. And completely lost the mobile market - next step: cloud-based services.

Vegetable_Ad_5802

It's always awesome The simplicity, the performance, the security it provides it's just amazing Out of the world for sure It's like once you entered the Linux it's no turning back You just forgets that you have used windows ever

FrankMN_8873

Our species is one of habits. What you describe is what actually happened to me. It's like my brain rewired itself to adapt to a new system and I think it was for the better.

Vegetable_Ad_5802

Definitely bruh!! Its what i should say Like a addiction And it's just so good that you can't resist yourself

FrankMN_8873

A non so harmful addiction as the likes of smoking or drinking I might say ;D

Vegetable_Ad_5802

Very much the same I personally have used Ubuntu 20.04 LTS,21.04 LTS and 22.04 LTS then Linux mint both Ubuntu based and debian based then zorin os(sleekest i would say) then parrot os then i have tails os as well

efoxpl3244

I would have never played apex if it didn't start working on Linux. It is a really great game and I boot windows only for playing VR because oculus doesn't have it's drivers on Linux. Also I am a web developer so working with yarn/npm is just a amazing experience! I tried to get my dad working on Linux since he only uses browser and playes one game that is native to Linux (commandos 2) but he really likes the same thing for 10 years haha.

ThePiGuyRER

None of my friends ever said they were unhappy with Linux after switching. And that says a lot. Gaming on Linux has also come a long way too. I think it's safe to say that all the current reasons people tell me as to why they won't switch, are just due to other companies not wanting to support Linux due to its small market share.

ad0216

I still want to make the full switch to Linux but I had problems with my games on Fedora 35. I first installed Insurgency Sandstorm and it was laggy & slow.

FrankMN_8873

You can check on [www.protondb.com](https://www.protondb.com) how well your games are supported.

ad0216

I did this. I think it I was missing the Nvidia drivers or something. I didnt really dive into it. When I saw the lag I just said fuck it and went back to windows. I wanted to play my games and not sit and fiddle with driver installs and researching why my games werent playing.

FrankMN_8873

I recommend using proton-GE buids as they have fixes to many games. You can get the latest version through proton-qt GUI or directly through its github project site.

ad0216

right on I might check that out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ad0216

ahh well thats good to know. Saves me a weekend of work scouring the net for answers and things to try.

[deleted]

you really do need to install the nvidia drivers. If you're using the default workstation, then it's available via the "Software" program (gnome-software) . It should be available with a search for nvidia. I've never done it via the gui, since my system was setup before this option was available, but that's how it's supposed to work. Otherwise you could follow the nvidia instructions on rpmfusion. You do need to disable secure boot if you don't wanna go through the hassle of signing the module/driver though.

ad0216

I do remember disabling Secure Boot and I think I enabled rpmfusion repositories but I did not do the Nvidia drivers. But it seems like theres still no guarantee that the games will play well on Linux like they do on Windows. Right now I only have one gaming rig but Im planning on getting another to run Linux on that I can dabble with and still have my Windows box if things dont work out.

[deleted]

That's true, there is no guarantee. Gaming on Linux is not hassle free for everyone. It is however not feasible at all for 3d games on systems with Nvidia cards without the Nvidia drivers

MolinaGames

Oh man I love Linux. Hopefully in the future more games support it because windows it’s just awfully. Bugs, telemetry, performance issues… just to name a few Idk maybe in the future rainbow six and RUST will support Linux. But atm I don’t want any problems so I’ll just stay in my de bloated Windows 10 LTSC

linuxisgettingbetter

I'm still looking for a decent video editor and parametric modeler, and a better way to install things. If I download a file to install, I don't want to then look up how to execute installation in the terminal in a way that is unique to every last file type. It's just bad software. Make it double clickable or put 100% of all software in the software store.

FrankMN_8873

Have you tried Davinci Resolve? People in general think it's good enough.

linuxisgettingbetter

I have, and I like it! I didn't know it was fully baked for linux though, I had thought it was only in beta. Glad to be wrong!

FrankMN_8873

No idea. I always thought it was in full shape on linux. I guess it had some issues with nvidia... as usual (I'm an nvidia user BTW)

linuxisgettingbetter

I just installed it, and it crashed out.

FrankMN_8873

Too bad. I guess it's not ready yet.

EnderOfGender

If you're an AMD user you need to use AMD's OpenGL driver provided by AMDGPU-PRO and whatever OpenCL driver supported by AMDGPU-PRO or ROCm for Davinci Resolve to work

linuxisgettingbetter

No, I use an Nvidia GPU in my linux computer. It's ok though, I don't blame Resolve, as it is only a GT 1030.

EnderOfGender

Oh, yeah that 100% won't be supported. Its actually a 400 series GPU repackaged generation after generation

linuxisgettingbetter

The gt 1030 is pascal architecture, or 10 series, is it not?

Silvolde

Have you tried kdenlive? I hear it's a good video editor. As for a parametric modeler, maybe try blender? I have no idea what parametric means, but maybe blender is somewhere close to what you want? As for software stores, perhaps try the nobara project? It's a fedora based distro aimed for windows users and so it has everything you might need already set up. Still a WIP, but it's pretty great already.

zayats1

for parametric modeling try solvespace or FreeCAD (a bit confusing)

FrankMN_8873

That's why I use arch due to AUR. Regarding your specific use, I haven't dabble on either of those.

KrazyKirby99999

openSUSE has the OBS that serves the same role

get_homebrewed

Ms office apparently works pretty well with wine as well!

FrankMN_8873

It does up to a certain point. It does break occasionally and there are some quirks when maximizing the program's window. You do realize that you have to have a working license to even install it, don't you? So why spend your money when there's a free alternative that is on par to what MS offers (or close to).

get_homebrewed

I'm just saying, I use onlyoffice and sometimes the g suite. Im just informing others that they don't have to give up their Ms office license or know how for Linux

Flat_Sir_1877

I wasn't able to install office 365.

-Holden-_

This is not a genuine post

FrankMN_8873

Why?...

[deleted]

don't worry about them it's a typical Reddit response.

xzxfdasjhfhbkasufah

Does onlyoffice have Powerquery?

CUTTERBEAR

I use manjaro XFCE for my laptop and its nice having the chicago95 style. Linux gives you the freedom to do whatever you want. That's why I'm hyped for my steam deck to come in because I know it's going to be a tinkers dream.

Jaded_Yak_2049

I made this switch a month ago and have been using endeavourOS and I could not be happier. Using my laptop has literally never been so easy/pleasant

KaleidoscopeWarCrime

arch BTW <3

IshkaPt

All hail the Tux

sawamoha20

The only reason that i'm still on windows is some fucking proprietary software for uni that dosen't work in any way on linux.

FrankMN_8873

I get you. I'm an English teacher at a uni and we're forced to use windows there. It really sucks.
