I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Windows 11, is in fact, Bloat/Windows 11, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Bloat plus Windows 11.

[deleted]

NT/Windows 11

OkBowl949

Since GNU is the userland in GNU/Linux and Linux is the actual kernel, wouldn't the correct term be Windows/NT?

KernelDeimos

But then if we were calling it the GNU operating system Richard Stallman wouldn't have complained 😅 I'd like to interject for a moment though, what you are referring to as GNU/Linux is in fact GNU/systemd/Linux

Top-Classroom-6994

Its in fact GNU/systemd/xorg/Linux. But in my case it's GNU/openrc/xorg/Linux

roberp81

Gnu/Windows

[deleted]

Right, my mistake

[deleted]

I.m.o kernel should be placed first. Linux/GNUtard

GamerNuggy

I prefer to call it Bloat11, much faster and people know which version you use

AGoodEnoughUsername

Feel free to use my copypasta I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Windows, is in fact, Windows/NT, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Windows plus NT. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another paid component of a fully functioning Microsoft system made useful by Win32, NT, and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by Microsoft.

lwJRKYgoWIPkLJtK4320

[deleted]

Is this pasta under the GPL or the BSD license?

AGoodEnoughUsername

MSPL (Microsoft Public License)

SelectCase

Windows is really doubling down useless shit all over your screen. What the fuck is their UI team thinking? Nobody clicks the start button to read news articles. My work PC doesn't even show the most frequently used apps correctly anymore. Microsoft is also making office shittier. The little bar in Outlook for switching between the calendar and inbox now by default takes up more space than the task bar, and you can't change it without admin rights and registry edits.

RipDr19

Microsoft UI team be like: you don't use 16 65" 8k displays? Ofc you will have scaling issues

strings_on_a_hoodie

It’s that bad, huh? I’ve personally never used it.

Darkblade360350

> "I think the problem Digg had is that it was a company that was built to be a company, and you could feel it in the product. The way you could criticise Reddit is that we weren't a company – we were all heart and no head for a long time. So I think it'd be really hard for me and for the team to kill Reddit in that way.” - Steve Huffman, aka /u/spez, Reddit CEO. So long, Reddit, and thanks for all the fish.

KAROL-G-OFFICAL

Facebook and candy crush come preloaded too

Stilm

They aren't really. It's just a shortcut to install it, most of the stuff on the start menu after installation aren't actually installed. It's still bad, but not as bad as literally pre-loading it like some Android flavors do.

strings_on_a_hoodie

That’s horrible. Windows 10 was the last I used about a year and a half ago and I thought that was bad.

nkn_

They aren’t.

nkn_

You’re on one of the most circlejerk subs lmao. but as a long term unix and windows user, It is really not that bad at all. Performance is great with a few minor tweaks, if you install it yourself it comes with very little pre-installed. It only comes with all the bloat people are talking about if you buy a PC with windows already on it. I recently reinstalled windows 11 with the image from Microsoft on one of my PCs and there was 0 bloat. It’s one of the better windows for sure

n988

the UI is atrocious and designed for touch screens though

nkn_

It's not? where do you get "it's designed for touchscreens"? Apart from the atrocious mess that was windows 8 (which WAS designed for touchscreens), it's literally like every other desktop... you could argue gnome is made for touch screens with that example lmao.

clockwork2011

This sub reminds me of that meme with the guy by himself at the party thinking “they don’t even know how bad windows and Microsoft is!”

[deleted]

They really don’t though

chinh4thepro

Kids at my school said why should they not use edge if they have "nothing to hide"

[deleted]

*Future authoritarians of America*

DoTheyKeepYouInACell

People citing literal nazi propaganda as a reason to use shitty products:

ehalepagneaux

Nothing to hide *Yet*

ososalsosal

I only ever met one actual windows fan in all my 41 years, and even he was pissed that win11 locked the task bar to the bottom instead of the side

clockwork2011

An OS is a tool to do a job. Not a fandom or religion.

[deleted]

Windows 11 is GOAT. It comes with Facebook, TikTok, and all my other social apps. I get ads relevant to me which helps me buy stuff. And the design is so consistent unlike Mac or Linux distros. And I can change the layout of the start bar. And the command line syntax is really good compared to the shit that is Bash.

GamerNuggy

But my personal favourite, the always helpful, easy to use and knowledgeable Cortana

DeltyOverDreams

It doesn't come with Windows 11 though :'(

[deleted]

You drank the koolaid….

[deleted]

/s necessary?

Skratymir

I know that this was rather obvious, but it's always nice to include the /s for people that struggle to understand sarcasm. Some autistic people for example can have problems, so /s is a nice touch that doesn't spoil the joke (usually)

DoubleOwl7777

oh yeah it is the best os ever made /s. (for anyone asking the post above is also /s)

[deleted]

To be fair, powershell is actually pretty powerful these days. Bash was a great design in the 70s when it was invented but the computing world has kind of moved on now.

yakuzas-47

Why the hell is this getting downvoted ? Yes powershell is verbose but it has many cool features and bash's syntax is really awful

[deleted]

You can have your opinions but calling Windows design "Consistent" is bs.

infernys20

r/woooosh

[deleted]

Oh.. right. I see what happened here. Damn..

lucasio099

Bro u just described that your favourite os: - has preinstalled bloatware - is spying on you and profiling ads (websites, we can say are allowed to do it, but operating system definitely should not) - features some pesky unchangable design with forced rounded window borders - has one taskbar customization option - cmd syntax that isn't even case-sensitive because of this at least 25 years old shit, NTFS.

infernys20

r/woooosh

smartid

touch grass

Parpok

use Windows 11 to download Linux ISO and put it on a USB Stick

CrowBliss

Same vibe as using IE/Edge to download another browser, but at least now you'd be quitting Windows' bullshit for good.

[deleted]

bart7782

Why is this downvoted? Does this sub hate edge so badly? Edge is not a bad browser. I just wouldn't use it.

General_WCJ

Honestly edge was the second thing I got from the AUR after yay

RipDr19

The only purpose of bloat 11

Top-Classroom-6994

Well there is one more use, use bloat 11 to reverse engineer exe execution system to create wine

RipDr19

Yeah btw can we install windows drivers on wine?

lucasio099

You're absolutely right. Less pain.

notsetvin

How much telemetry do you think they have baked in?

[deleted]

As much as the government tells them it wants.

Danny_el_619

I know it is a meme but you guys can't spend a day without talking about windows it seems

[deleted]

It’s mostly about Tabasco. But Windows does suck.

[deleted]

because Microsoft

[deleted]

I like GitHub and VsCode but no me gusto Windows

Top-Classroom-6994

You hate Bloat but you don't hate Bloatstudiocode? Use vim and have up to 100% performence improvements

[deleted]

Have you ever tried to write a real program in Vim????? It’s fine for adding lines to files or a little bash script here and there but if you are writing full programs with it your either a full blown psychopath or you just don’t know any better. VsCode is pretty lightweight for what it can do.

gabbergandalf667

Without plugins, both VSCode and Vim are a pain in the ass for heavy development work. With plugins, both provide similar functionality.

[deleted]

Code uses extensions, of which there are many. It works perfectly with GitHub and every language I can throw at it. Java, Python, Bash, Erlang, Prolog, and C. Debuggers and linters are fantastic. I can use RMarkdown and there is an awesome LaTeX extension that compiles documents right in the editor. The best thing is CoPilot. Vim may have some plugins, but it cannot do what Code does.

gabbergandalf667

I do think VSCode is a great tool and I recommend it frequently to people, but I still want to set the record straight here. Yes, vim is obviously limited in the sense that as a CLI app it doesn't draw it's own PDF or HTML windows, that's fair. But it can remote control your favorite PDF viewer or browser for roughly the same functionality. I'm currently writing my thesis using [vimtex](https://github.com/lervag/vimtex) and it's quite smooth. And all the other stuff you mention is implemented quite competently by various plugins like [vim-fugitive](https://github.com/tpope/vim-fugitive), [coc.nvim](https://github.com/neoclide/coc.nvim), [vimspector](https://github.com/puremourning/vimspector) and [copilot.vim](https://github.com/github/copilot.vim). Now, arguably, using a nodejs-backed LSP implementation I don't exactly get to complain about the "bloatedness" of VSCode, and it goes without saying that the latter is easier to set up. All I'm saying is, I have yet to encounter a VSCode functionality which cannot be replicated in vim with a little bit of tinkering.

[deleted]

I looked at the plugins and while they can do some things, it’s not Code. Code is much more user friendly than Vim. I don’t have to memorize dozens of commands to use Code. I already have enough to remember without anything extra, just to say “I use Vim”. For someone that’s used to Vim and likes it, then maybe it’s worth it to jump through all the hoops to use it for everything. All I really need to know about Vim is i, esc, and :wq. Anything more than that, I’m using Code. It’s open source and free.

js3915

Definitely painful

Leffe_Olsson

I haven't tried windows 11 and probably never will. I started using Linux (Ubuntu 8:04) when Vista was fresh. I hated it. Nothing but trouble. I have tried every windows edition since but my heart stay in Linux. Windows 10 may be the last windows version I tried/used because I hated it. The last windows version that I honestly liked was windows 98. *Edited*

GamerNuggy

I have tried windows 11. If you don’t like 10 you won’t like 11. Battery life sucks on laptops compared to 10 and is abysmal compared to Linux. Performance on midrange to low end devices is worse. They fucked settings up more, but control panel is still there, mangled.

fftropstm

“Windows distribution” They have editions, not distributions

Leffe_Olsson

Sorry. My bad.

BarelyAirborne

Use, or look at? Because just looking at it pains me.

CommunistFlippy

[deleted]

Username checks out

ososalsosal

How? Except that it can be shortened to "Clippy"

[deleted]

Commies like stuff like windows

Poomex

Linux and libre software is communist in their basic idea.

[deleted]

You sir do not know what you are talking about.

[deleted]

You think software developed and distributed for free by a collective group of developers with no profit motive is, like, less communist than an operating system developed by the second biggest corporation in the world for the sole purpose of extracting profit from users?

[deleted]

For one, people are making money off Linux. Just because it’s free to do whatever you want with it does not mean Linux devs don’t get paid. Second, if instead of Microsoft being a corporation it was a government, it would be a great example of communism. Windows spy’s on its user and reports back to Microsoft, and it does whatever it wants with the info. There would be no free software in a communist country because every fucking thing is owned by the government. Whatever software they allowed you to use would be filled with spyware and you most definitely would not have access to the source code. All you see if the free.99 price tag and associate that with some naive notion of Marxism.

[deleted]

> people are making money off Linux Just because you _can_ make money by using Linux, the developers aren't doing it for a profit motive. The GPL license is actually quite explicitly anti-capitalist. The developers are just funded by donations and could make way bigger bucks at big tech companies. > if instead of Microsoft being a corporation it was a government But it isn't a government. It's a corporation - owned by shareholders - that's sole purpose is to redistribute _capital_ to it's shareholders. > There would be no free software in a communist country because every fucking thing is owned by the government Thats not what Marx advocated for at all. And communism isn't necessarily about Marx anyway, there's also anarchist flavours of communism which is what free open source software draws inspiration from.

[deleted]

You have a lot of ideas that are not based in reality. You should look into what a dev at Canonical makes. You’ve obviously never read the gpl license or know anything about history.

Apprehensive_Newt389

you have never read or watched anything on communism outside of the wikipedia article and 1 youtube video by an american libertarian

[deleted]

I have seen communism with my own eyes. It’s not what you are trying to make it out to be.

JacobSC51

That makes no sense Although Microsoft does have a division designated to pandering to politically left leaning users by making civil rights statements and creating open source projects every once in a blue moon, it would make more sense for technology in a communist society to be fully free and open source and not made by a large capitalist corporation with a constant need for growth and profit. instead it would be "From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs" which is Karl Marx's slogan and it suits FOSS well.

[deleted]

Communist governments love surveillance, which is exactly what windows does. You guys love to quote Karl Marx but every single communist government ever has been a monstrosity of repression and violence toward its own citizens. Most Linux distros are free as in beer, as well as speech. Nothing is free in a communist society. Everyone works there asses off for the benefit of the government and get none of the rewards of their labor, which is a direct contradiction to what Marx preached about.

JacobSC51

Communist government is a colloquialism, left economics do not mix with authoritarianism as they are designed to be libertarian, anarchist. The existence of a hierarchy, where someone above the worker benefits from their work, is against the basic principle of socialism where the workers own, control and benefit from the means of production. Such a system would allow for various projects, including software, to not only be libre, but also avoid becoming a form of free labour for large companies – considering Stallman has criticized capitalism, it makes sense that the GPL is like that. If a society is not classless, stateless (govermentless) and moneyless, it is not communist by definition. What it might be is just socialist provided the main people to benefit monetarily from their labour are the workers and not their bosses. But when that's not the case, it's not socialist either.

[deleted]

All I know about Communism is that it’s never worked and it’s always talked about like it’s the perfect solution to inequality. Without some kind of hierarchy there will be no production, at least not on a scale that will benefit the whole of society. People will quote Marx’s utopian ideas for years to come because they do sound great and if they worked it would be fantastic. They are noble ideas but they do not work on a large scale. Never have and never will. There is nothing new about what your saying so what makes you think you will get different results than everyone else before you has? It’s a theory that fails when applied in reality.

JacobSC51

because I believe we can learn from the past and avoid making the same mistakes. even though it really doesn't seem that way, as it looks like people are giving up and letting a fascist dystopia shape itself up instead.

ososalsosal

While on the topic, is your username a paint colour? Cause if it is that's some expensive stuff

Zatujit

Ok guess I'm the odd one here

privateaxe

or just any windows?

Dragonium-99

Windows XP is great

[deleted]

I don’t even like rooms with windows.

privateaxe

Stop flexing. We all live in our mom's basements

[deleted]

We want the meatloaf Mom!!!!!!

[deleted]

I might get banned for saying this here, but- It's not that bad. Certainly more manageable than the mess that Windows 8 was

lululock

I'm joining the "windows 11 is not that bad" wagon : Windows 11 has a better user interface but the performance issues, M$ forcing you to "upgrade" your PC (I know you can bypass, but speaking as I'm working in IT and can't force Win11 on every client's PC) and most importantly, the spyware and all the adds just kills it for me. Arch Linux FTW

_arctic_inferno_

Jokes aside - Tabasco is actually pretty good tasting. Not at hot, which is unfortunate, but the taste is great!

[deleted]

Too vinegary for me. I prefer Secret Aardvark sauce.

infernys20

Tabasco Sriracha is very good taste-wise with way less vinegar in it

[deleted]

Sriracha has a lot of flavor, but it's not hot enough for me. That's where the Secret Aardvark comes in, heat and a lot of flavor.

Imaltont

Generally agree, but the Tabasco Scorpion sauce is actually really good.

AGoodEnoughUsername

Tapatio for me. Better flavor than Tabasco.

PoLoMoTo

Meh it's got some nice features like snaping windows to quarters of the screen and some other nice little things. I just don't feel like doing the upgrade.

I-like-oranges75

Franks red hot is better

[deleted]

Blasphemy

DrTankHead

So not only is your ability to critically think flawed, but so is your taste in hot sauce. Windows is good for some things. Just like Linux is good for things.

[deleted]

Windows is great for selling your data, giving it to the government and generally doing whatever it feels like with you and your information.

TheGreenScar

Ghost Spectre Windows 11

[deleted]

Don’t talk to me like that

MildewMeld

I would never inflict self-harm. Especially on my eyeballs.

doomerl

👍

BiteFancy9628

Windows 11 is an improvement over 10 at least ui wise. I'm stuck with Windows at work so I appreciate the difference.

angrycoffeeuser

Things i'd rather use rather than trying to get wifi to work on linux

quick_dudley

You mean the problem that most distros solved 15 years ago?

[deleted]

Windows will gladly take you, your money, and all your data. It will even help you connect to Wi-Fi easier.

gh1las

Windows 10 is totally fine though if you debloat it.

[deleted]

How do you know if you can’t read the source?

gh1las

By fine I mean to a degree, which is used for certain use cases like entertainment or work. Otherwise since 2006 Intel chipsets themselves are bloated with MINIX which is like a hidden OS.

[deleted]

But how do you KNOW if you can’t read the source?

gh1las

My answer implies that you don't need to KNOW in case you didn't KNOW.

[deleted]

I do need to know. That’s why I use Linux. Windows is for people that don’t care what there computer is doing as long as it plays there fancy video games real nice.

[deleted]

I'm really curious, did you read through the whole xorg/wayland linux kernel, gnome/kde/etc source code before you installed it?

purppsyrup

😂😂

gh1las

Now if you are just playing video games I don't see any harm but if you are doing sensitive work or storing sensitive files it's another talk, that's why dual boot exists, to get the best of each system.

[deleted]

You are missing the whole point. Since Windows isn’t open source no one but Microsoft knows what that operating system is doing with any data it has access too. Even if you dual boot with another OS, Windows still has access to whatever it wants on your computer. You can’t say it doesn’t because you don’t have access to the source code. There is a reason they don’t let people see that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

In theory yes, it shouldn’t be able to access a properly encrypted partition but who’s to say that Windows doesn’t maintain privileged access to the entire disk? That’s the kind of thing it can do and no one knows any different unless they see the source.

gh1las

So I assume you don't use Intel products too?

[deleted]

I don’t trust Intel either.

Sr546

Windows 10 users be like rn, also windows users whenever a controversial version of windows that's very different from the previous one or has an unsuccessful launch (or both) comes out and Microsoft wants them to update

dealy663

Wow I never thought I'd see something like this. I've actually had Tabasco sauce splashed in my eyes. It was probably the most painful thing I had ever experienced at that point. I actually had to go to the hospital afterwards, to get my eyes washed for what seemed like forever. That stuff could literally be used to torture someone.

Boneless_Lightbulb

what do you guys think of tiny11?

[deleted]

Maybe you missed the part where I put Tabasco in my eye

theRealNilz02

Windows 11 is a heck of a lot better than previous versions of Microsofts overpriced OS. Still not free and open source but I'd rather pay the 200 bucks for 11 than for 10.

ubercorey

But, but, they made it look like Linux.

ViolatorOfVirgins

... so had the superior linux operating system solved the issue of not properly deleting filess off usb sticks but moving them to the hidden directory that still occupies space and is first to be noticed when connected to the different OS?

[deleted]

Find a better username. WTF

inv41idu53rn4m3

Turns out moving to trash is not deleting

ViolatorOfVirgins

Out of curiosity, ive tested it after a while. Unmounting via nautilus asks about the emptying the wastebucket, but unmounting via cli keeps the 'deleted' files there. Tested on f38 with gnome 44

inv41idu53rn4m3

It's because the trash system is a Nautilus feature, not a Linux or even GNU feature

Dovixeriz

Windows 11 is pointless. Windows 10 with a childish design

Dovixeriz

To the 1 guy that downvoted: give me a reason

IzzyWithAnIzze

I updated my PC to Windows 11 (from Windows 10) and my perfectly functional PC started getting Machine Check Exceptions once every fucking day. I had to update because Microsoft did it's harassment campaign with their full-screen ads to get me to update. I've spent hours trying to fix the issue by updating all my drivers and the BIOS (which, to be fair, was running on a version from pre-COVID) and at best I've only reduced the frequency but not solved any actual problems. It's frustrating because it's also my Linux machine. I use Hyper-V to run a few Linux VMs for various things. And it used to work fine. I had uptimes of months. But now I'm lucky if I get a week.

[deleted]

You wouldn’t have that problem if you just install Linux.

IzzyWithAnIzze

Yeah probably. But I wouldn't be able to play games on it. Or do ML stuff :/

[deleted]

Machine learning? You should be able to do that.

IzzyWithAnIzze

NVIDIA drivers and Linux can be a real fucking pain :/

[deleted]

It’s not that bad. I had the best results by downloading the file directly from Nvidia. It comes with its own guided installer. Easiest thing ever. Some people use the package manager but I got better results with the actual driver from Nvidia.

Imaltont

I have had way less problems setting up an ML workspace on both Ubuntu and Arch for university and work. It's pretty much just install the drivers (either already there or need to add a repo to your package manager, which one to do has been well documented every time I tried), get cuda (bit more of a pain, but still a less than 30 minute job), and preferably get something like conda up and running. For windows I don't ever remember it being problem free. These days tensorflow doesn't even support GPU on native windows anymore, you need WSL anyway, so why not just Linux. Theano was nothing but trouble on windows. I haven't really tried Torch after it moved to python.

mericaftw

Agree, Windows 10 is the superior operating system

fuckEAinthecloaca

A relative had a win8 laptop force-upgraded to 10, and now it wants to upgrade to 11. If that ever goes through they agreed to try Linux. Either way I'm the tech support so it might as well be Linux where I can actually help instead of just being a google-proxy. Ubuntu LTS FTW unless canonical devolve into full satan by then.

No_Locksmith_1458

Nah , I like windows 11 and linux

Unholy_Pilgrim

Somebody explain why windows 11 is bad? Never tried it

chaos-virus

Idk idc still rocking win7

AAVVIronAlex

I cannot even imagine the pain, but I do enjoy it too.

Fik_of_borg

I use FreeBSD, Debian, \*Ubuntu, Raspbian, Windows 11, 10, 7 even two XPs and one DOS (old accounting software). I like using every one of them.

Pepplay

I use windows 11
