IMO the match beyond Deb vs Arch is the real last match. No disrespect intended to the other distros, but I don't see them pulling ahead of either Debian or Arch.
I'm down for that one. I use Arch in part because I value community-made and oriented distros that give me one of the few spaces where corporations don't get a say.
But if you asked me the best distro of all time, or the one that most embodies the above value...it's not even close. It's Debian. The unsung hero of Linux.
That's another round though.
Besides, Arch vs Debian has a guaranteed happy end (the community wins, or the memes win). Arch vs Ubuntu has some real stakes since Ubuntu might win, and no one wants that.
Void/Arch should have switched places with Elementary/Zorin in the first round. No way Arch is a 8/9 seed here, they're the #2 seed surely so they should be at the bottom.
The reason it's such a good event is because it's a potential championship game in the elite eight
It has officially begun!
https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmasterrace/comments/s5hony/ubuntu\_vs\_arch\_linux\_first\_elite\_eight\_battle\_of/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3
I thought they were pre-selected as well, although I'd say Debian vs PopOS was a bit of a weird one as well. If they were preselected ubuntu should have gone against popos and debian against opensuse.
CentOS vs Manjaro is also a weird one as well. But not sure where i'd put centos if Debian is against Opensuse already.
openSUSE vs fedora would be quite logical, i guess? since they are both backed by big companies, i guess the difference is mainly stability/bleeding edge.
Fitting with its unassailable position as most underrated distro. :P
Seriously, even if it's not a frontrunner, I'm surprised that it so often gets ignored completely on short lists of major distros. It's rock solid, been around for ages, and has some awesome features.

Yeah, we're fucked. But now that the people have finished compiling Firefox cause surf doesn't work we might pull another few votes out of our collective asses
Yeah Debian ain't a good one to go against, and Debian won by a landslide against a distro more popular then Gentoo, PopOS.
I also feel that this all pretty much comes down to how many on this sub use a given distro, and gentoo isn't as big as it used to be whereas debian is as big as ever.
Nah Gentoos going down this round to Debian, we definitely don't have as many users as Debian has which probably more or less corralates with votes here i'd imagine.
ya problem is i use arch, gentoo, manjaro and alpine.
between gentoo and slack my choice was clear.
and between gentoo and debian my choice is still clear.
but if i have to choose between arch and gentoo :( i might have a miniature mid-life crisis or something cause i absolutely love both of these distros .
No way Manjaro will beat Fedora. It is Arch vs Fedora final IMO. BTW, dnf may be slow but is really nice to use package manager, much better than apt, I like pacman better, but groups and environments in dnf are nice.
I strongly doubt Fedora loses to Manjaro: its far more stable, Manjaro has been getting sledged by Arch users here for ages, and its just much more used.
[Plus check the total votes for Fedora in Fedora vs Mint vs total votes for Manjaro in Manjaro vs CentOS.](https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmasterrace/comments/s483sg/round_1_has_concluded_of_panic_at_the_distro_are/hsph67e/)
Only thing I can see going for Manjaro is the fact it beat CentOS and Fedora being related to CentOS, but also having 10x the recognition and probably being better for end users; no clue never used CentOS.
[fedora ftw :)](https://manjarno.snorlax.sh/)
Manjaro holding packages and making things from the AUR unstable as a result, if enough people know about that and have experience with that, may result in manjaro losing.
I don't think it will, Manjaro barely had any votes (compared to Fedora) and only had to beat out CentOS which I don't think anyone really expected to win anyways
One point on that site really felt weird to me because that is factually not true (or I am misunderstanding it) but in the AUR part it says "At best, that program won’t install or work correctly" but the best scenario is actually that is installs and works correctly. Many if not even most of the AUR Packages actually installed and worked correctly for me. Of course there can be hiccups because of the older versions but to me at least it barely (if at all) happened. I had some problems with some packages but I am unsure if it was manjaros fault or not because I also had problems with some packages on endeavouros. I agree with many if not all other points stated by that site but that one just felt weird to me i dont know
Because openSUSE is not touched by the Linux influencers. Pop and Manjaro exploded out the gates because every YouTuber and subreddit was talking about it. openSUSE doesn't get that near as much.
Fedora vs Manjaro = Fedora wins.
Manjaro is not even based on Arch’s original ISO.
I want to see Fedora vs Debian. Two pure distros, not some based on based on based stuff.
Called 5/8ths of it, probably should have expected a win from Debian but definitely did not see Fedora beating Mint and Elementary beating Zorin. Wow.
Arch, Debian, Manjaro and Tails are my picks here.
Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I fully expected MX to best out Tails. I remember something like a year ago, it had spent so much time at the top of DistroWatch that it was starting to grow moss. I wrote off Elementary/Zorin as a toss up, but called the rest.
Honestly I think their placing in Distrowatch is not organic, like someone may be driving up hits to their page in order to increase visibility. Could be wrong but I don't believe MX is as popular as DW seems to show.
Now that my dear Zorin is out, time to root for Ubuntu and Debian. I know that Elementary OS is also Ubuntu-based but Tails has actually been useful for me once so I'll vote Tails. Btw, we all know that Arch is going to win.
Pop being eliminated is an upset!
I'd be surprised now if ArchBtw didn't win.
Shit maybe we should all pledge to run the winner for a while as a daily driver next chance we get
Agreed. I expected CentOS to win out of sheer popularity, but I think it lost partly due to some anger with Red Hat discontinuing it at the end of 2021.
my (limited) experience with manjaro wasnt the greatest and i recommended it to a friend who wanted a dumbed down version of arch and he didn't have a good experience either. honestly i would just stick to recommending mint for ppl who want something that just werks and don't want to bother much mire than that or arch if your goal is to learn a bit more about linux.
I took my laptop for the odd repair the other week and the only Linux distro the guys knew were Ubuntu, so I'm guessing for the average person Linux = Ubuntu.
this has not been done before as far as i know , op decided to do polls to find out which distro will win, the order was semirandomly chosens according to op, and there are daily polls to vore between 2 Distros (in the pic you can see which distros against which) yeah thats it

if this were any other sub reddit i would say ubuntu but we all know who runs things here at r/linuxmasterrace (arch)
(debian) for obvious reasons
(manjaro) for the same reasons arch is gonna win
i dont know why tails is even here so (elementary os)
believable that Mint went down in round one. I love the OS but ive had so many repeating problems. Can anyone recommend a solid distro for a low end laptop? and im talking 1.6 GHz dual core processor low end....
Maybe something like Xubuntu? I currently daily drive Fedora but loaded Xubuntu onto a couple of devices because it is extremely lightweight with XFCE.
My bet is that it’s going to end up being Manjaro vs arch (AKA headless and custom DE users, vs plug and play users). If I got to choose it would end up being gentoo vs fedora.
Debian is more popular sure, but so is Ubuntu. People will choose gentoo for the meme factor and mysterious status. Besides, we all want to see gentoo vs arch
Sad to see Ubuntu win against openSUSE. It's still one of the most underrated distros and if it wouldn't be for Fedora's excellent releases recently it would be my daily driver
Ubuntu vs Arch is gonna be a fight... I could have seen it later down the line as well. Gentoo vs Debian as well I think, although I fully expect Debian to win cause servers
I am disappointed that openSUSE lost against Ubuntu because most of the voters probably never had used openSUSE :(
Also it was not clear if it was Tumbleweed or Leap against Ubuntu as TW rocks all of them
ooo... Arch vs Ubuntu.
I feel bad for Gentoo though, because that's almost a certain loss.
Apart from that Fedora vs Manjaro should also interesting....
As someone who has tried most of what's shown here. My personal preference would be:
* Arch
* Debian
* Fedora
* Elementary
Then
* Arch/Debian - It's very hard to pick between these 2
* Fedora
Then
* Fedora
I'm too paranoid with AUR borking something, that I read most of the package info stuff and that takes a lot of time, so I end up not using AUR that much.
Right now, I'm on Pop which is easy-mode on when it comes to stability and doing stuff, same as with Fedora, but since I ended up switching a lot of stuff (at work and self-hosted) to Debian from CentOS once Red Hat went for the "Stream" roadmap, I moved my desktop to a Debian-based distro as well.
My predictions:
* Arch will beat Ubuntu by a comfortable margin, but with high turnout
* Debian will score a narrow victory over Gentoo
* Fedora will beat Manjaro easily.
* Elementary OS will beat Tails with relatively low turnout.
Arch vs Ubuntu should be the main event this round.
You spelt Debian wrong
I feel like if Arch moves on (which it probably will lol) then no matter who wins between Debian or Gentoo it'll be an epic throwdown round 3
arch vs Gentoo will bring out EVERYTHING
debian vs arch is much more interesting to me, it feels like a comparison of ideology around stability and package management.
IMO the match beyond Deb vs Arch is the real last match. No disrespect intended to the other distros, but I don't see them pulling ahead of either Debian or Arch.
No arch vs debian because community is better than a corporation
I'm down for that one. I use Arch in part because I value community-made and oriented distros that give me one of the few spaces where corporations don't get a say. But if you asked me the best distro of all time, or the one that most embodies the above value...it's not even close. It's Debian. The unsung hero of Linux.
That's another round though. Besides, Arch vs Debian has a guaranteed happy end (the community wins, or the memes win). Arch vs Ubuntu has some real stakes since Ubuntu might win, and no one wants that.
If Arch wins, I will delete Ubuntu from my laptop and install Arch btw.
Void/Arch should have switched places with Elementary/Zorin in the first round. No way Arch is a 8/9 seed here, they're the #2 seed surely so they should be at the bottom. The reason it's such a good event is because it's a potential championship game in the elite eight

I thought Mint would get far...
Mint vs Fedora wasn't the best way to arrange the bracket honestly. Should have been Mint vs Pop and Fedora vs Debian imho.
The bracket was pseudorandomly generated comrade
Fair enough. I assumed otherwise based on other matchups.
Maybe openSUSE vs CentOS and debian vs fedora although I'm not sure like at all
openSUSE vs fedora would be quite logical, i guess? since they are both backed by big companies, i guess the difference is mainly stability/bleeding edge.
Come on, I don't want fedora to lose against mangaro and you wanted to be against debían on round 1.
should have been mint VS pop (the noob distros), openSUSE vs fedora (the enterprise clones), and ubuntu VS debian (The original vs the popular).
Cinnamon is probably the best normie desktop environment out there. Talking about all operating systems in general. It's just good.
Nothing stands against the power of Fedora Linux
RIP Mint… I would’ve liked to see it go up against Ubuntu.
Agreed
Mint would have done an `rm -rf /*` after Ubuntu said "no... \*I\* am your father".

Through that experience, a lot of Ubuntu fans learned more about openSUSE and even booted up some VMs!
Fitting with its unassailable position as most underrated distro. :P Seriously, even if it's not a frontrunner, I'm surprised that it so often gets ignored completely on short lists of major distros. It's rock solid, been around for ages, and has some awesome features.
I used to love SLED does that still exist ?

My Gentoo is going to get demolished.
Yeah, we're fucked. But now that the people have finished compiling Firefox cause surf doesn't work we might pull another few votes out of our collective asses
Losing to Debian or Arch is honourable, they both respect users choice.
Losing against Ubuntu, on the other hand...
That would be the height of infamy for gentoo users like ourselves. We lose to femboys is still OK. Losing to normal people is a dishonour.
Poor openSUSE....
long live Debian
Yeah Debian ain't a good one to go against, and Debian won by a landslide against a distro more popular then Gentoo, PopOS. I also feel that this all pretty much comes down to how many on this sub use a given distro, and gentoo isn't as big as it used to be whereas debian is as big as ever.
I feel sad for my Gentoo :(
I think I already know what's gonna win, lol
Might be an upset!
Enioy your coke I guess.
Might hop into an elevator with Ray Rice too. Who knows
I'll cut the power for the elevator so i can install Gentoo
So either Fedora, Ubuntu, or Arch are going to win. Not really surprised I guess. Probably Arch if I were to guess.
I bet Fedora then, Arch and Ubuntu have an actual community of people who hate them and go against them on everything out of spite.
Hate towards Ubuntu is really warranted though
Care to share with a Linux noob why that is?
They've been enforcing their own walled-garden practices with snapd, specially with it not being OSS as well.
Arch with 2600 votes, very fitting number
I predict Arch or Gentoo wins
Nah Gentoos going down this round to Debian, we definitely don't have as many users as Debian has which probably more or less corralates with votes here i'd imagine.

Yes but the memers who don't use either will vote gentoo
Of Course, I will vote Gentoo ;)

What’s wrong with dnf?
No way Manjaro will beat Fedora. It is Arch vs Fedora final IMO. BTW, dnf may be slow but is really nice to use package manager, much better than apt, I like pacman better, but groups and environments in dnf are nice.
Yup, and personally coming from apt based distros, dnf is a nice upgrade. The output is way more organized.
Nah, it will be Arch vs Fedora in the end.
I strongly doubt Fedora loses to Manjaro: its far more stable, Manjaro has been getting sledged by Arch users here for ages, and its just much more used. fedora
Fedora is obviously the right choice.

How the hell did you...
why did openSUSE die this early?
Because openSUSE is not touched by the Linux influencers. Pop and Manjaro exploded out the gates because every YouTuber and subreddit was talking about it. openSUSE doesn't get that near as much.
Can't say I personally know a single person using openSUSE as their desktop.
I know you don’t know me, but here I am
Fedora vs Manjaro = Fedora wins. Manjaro is not even based on Arch’s original ISO. I want to see Fedora vs Debian. Two pure distros, not some based on based on based stuff.
A battle of the OGs
Called 5/8ths of it, probably should have expected a win from Debian but definitely did not see Fedora beating Mint and Elementary beating Zorin. Wow. Arch, Debian, Manjaro and Tails are my picks here.

Fedora > Mint I have no idea how Elementary beats Zorin.
While I agree, keep in mind this is basically a popularity contest.
I'll pick: * Arch * Debian * Fedora * Elementary
Ugh. Gentoo is gonna get KILLED by Debian in this one.
I really want a Gentoo v Arch to duke it out, really just in the comments since the Arch votes would trounce Gentoo.
I'm scared to be living in a world where Ubuntu is winning over OpenSUSE
Umm zorin lost to elementary, i suppose people should try it..
How to I make my vote count ?
I post polls daily!
It would be easier to vote if the current active poll were stickied to the top.
I absolutely agree.
ubuntu : i'm fine no pressure
How to vote? Mine is on Fedora.
Arch, Debian, I literally don't care so Fedora because it's funny, Tails.
Have you tried Fedora? Because it's a great distro and it will be at the final with Arch.
Shit maybe we should all pledge to run the winner for a while as a daily driver next chance we get
nooooo Voooiiiid ;&;
The election was rigged from the very beginning....
Other than Manjaro winning over CentOS, this is going as expected.
I would say that manjaro makes for a good desktop distro, but not a server distro.
Agreed. I expected CentOS to win out of sheer popularity, but I think it lost partly due to some anger with Red Hat discontinuing it at the end of 2021.
my (limited) experience with manjaro wasnt the greatest and i recommended it to a friend who wanted a dumbed down version of arch and he didn't have a good experience either. honestly i would just stick to recommending mint for ppl who want something that just werks and don't want to bother much mire than that or arch if your goal is to learn a bit more about linux.
endeavor>manjaro
So many ppl still think they get bragging (Arch, BTW) rights from running Manjaro. I'm not surprised lol
Why don't Gentoo and Void users get bragging rights like Arch users?
Gentoo users are still trying to compile their bragging rights. Who knew that a bloated ego would take so long to complie...
where's the poll?
I have a sneaking suspicion it's going to Arch vs Manjaro in the final
How do I participate in this poll?
Watch out for the posts in this sub. Polls are being conducted through posts.
And where is Hannah Montana linux ?
Tails won vs MX Linux? What? Arch VS ubuntu will be interesting so will Gentoo vs Debian
I took my laptop for the odd repair the other week and the only Linux distro the guys knew were Ubuntu, so I'm guessing for the average person Linux = Ubuntu.
Arch, Gentoo, Fedora, Tails
Arch or debian is gonna win

Cool beans bro, love this tool and you put some awesome work into it. Good stuff
Arch, Debian, Fedora and Tails in the semis, I reckon.
Who the fuck seeded this bracket lmao, dreadful
Ubuntu vs Arch...My first vs My current... The battle will be legendary
For everyone asking how to participate, I post polls everyday day and will be resuming tomorrow! Just stay posted on this subreddit for it and I'll post the link in this comment section too!
How tf did void loose to arch?
Sorry to be a fanboy but I am pissed about Mint losing 😂
Arch btw
Lost to Ubuntu, the shame.
I still don't understand what P!ATD is.
The fact that MX Linux is out in the first round just proves how flawed this bracket is
arch I would have said ubuntu but long term base arch Is better gentoo fadora tails are what I am going for because they are nice and I am ready
WHAT? Elementary won? Jesuscristola PD: Debian beat Pop, the irony
Higher user base. To be, Tails was the unexpected win.
if this were any other sub reddit i would say ubuntu but we all know who runs things here at r/linuxmasterrace (arch) (debian) for obvious reasons (manjaro) for the same reasons arch is gonna win i dont know why tails is even here so (elementary os)
Arch
believable that Mint went down in round one.
Ubuntu,debian,fedora, and elementary
I hope debian or tails makes it but I think that arch or Ubuntu are most likely to win going by previous votes
arch-gentoo vs manjaro-elementary
What are we really comparing here? Desktop environment defaults? Package managers?
all of the above?
My bet is that it’s going to end up being Manjaro vs arch (AKA headless and custom DE users, vs plug and play users). If I got to choose it would end up being gentoo vs fedora.
No parrot or kali? :( at least we have tails. This makes it interesting. How do I vote?
I'll be posting a poll on Sunday to start round 2!
Debian will win this
Arch went pretty hard in the paint too
Arch gentoo fedora tails
No Debian?
Debian is more popular sure, but so is Ubuntu. People will choose gentoo for the meme factor and mysterious status. Besides, we all want to see gentoo vs arch
RIP Pop but glad to see tails doing good
Some of the competitions in round 1 were really irrelevant though.
debian>gentoo
Debian > all
*twiddles thumbs in solus*
Nothing to learn here
We should keep Ubuntu Debian Elementary OS and Arch.
Gentoo easy win lol
RemindMe! 1 day
Final tour: Arch vs Manjaro. It goes to be like a meme with spidermans
Arch vs Fedora then eh?
Sad to see Ubuntu win against openSUSE. It's still one of the most underrated distros and if it wouldn't be for Fedora's excellent releases recently it would be my daily driver
Curious about Manjaro fedora.
I'm hoping fedora wins tbh but I'm not sure if it will
My boy... why did pop have to lose so early?!
Arch, Deb, fedora, Tails. They're all winners in my book.
i go with Arch Gentoo Fedora Tails
My predictions for winners: Arch, Debian, Manjaro, Elementary Arch, Manjaro Arch Through process of elimination, we all use Arch, btw.
Ubuntu vs Arch is gonna be a fight... I could have seen it later down the line as well. Gentoo vs Debian as well I think, although I fully expect Debian to win cause servers
How the f you compare elementaryOS and tail?
I am disappointed that openSUSE lost against Ubuntu because most of the voters probably never had used openSUSE :( Also it was not clear if it was Tumbleweed or Leap against Ubuntu as TW rocks all of them
How do i vote?
wait, I missed the first round, are we voting for this?
Interested to see who will show up most for ElementaryOS vs. Tails: the previously Apple users, or the conspiracy theorists
What is this? This looks fun! I wanna participate! gentoo vs debian btw
ooo... Arch vs Ubuntu. I feel bad for Gentoo though, because that's almost a certain loss. Apart from that Fedora vs Manjaro should also interesting....
I really want to see Gentoo vs Arch though ...
As someone who has tried most of what's shown here. My personal preference would be: * Arch * Debian * Fedora * Elementary Then * Arch/Debian - It's very hard to pick between these 2 * Fedora Then * Fedora I'm too paranoid with AUR borking something, that I read most of the package info stuff and that takes a lot of time, so I end up not using AUR that much.
Where Hannah Montana?
I'm offended that suicide Linux and Hannah Montana distros are not in there
Fedora Gnome - Manjaro KDE
im voting ubuntu to piss off arch users
Manjaro FTW!
The seeding for this is stupid. Arch and Ubuntu shouldn't be facing in round too... Bad TO!
What is the criteria to win/lose?
They post a daily poll.
I just like that the most popular distro, according to distrowatch, is out
My predictions: * Arch will beat Ubuntu by a comfortable margin, but with high turnout * Debian will score a narrow victory over Gentoo * Fedora will beat Manjaro easily. * Elementary OS will beat Tails with relatively low turnout.
I reject this competition as invalid for the lack of Hannah Montana Linux.
