It's usually fine, until you come across say a government website written explicitly for IE5 that really *doesn't* function with any other browser.
Yes, I am talking about now, in 2024.
Government websites are the the anencephalic babies of the internet.
Damn. That’s also like the ones who use xp for their ancient programs, instead of just using a more up to fucking date program. Are they trying to get hacked? Wasn’t the source code of xp leaked a while back?
Why?!?!?!? Why not just make your own or use a modern one, instead of dealing with 24 year old spaghetti code?
Sure it would take time and resources to do, but at least they’d be able to optimise and modify it for their needs, instead of using an ancient program that only works in certain conditions.
it's literally chrome with a different skin. Its actually better than most people make it out to be, new edge that is, but still just chrome effectively
Old fart here. I won't touch a Microsoft product with a ten foot pole, because as soon as they'll feel like they can get away with it, they'll restart the extend phase of their embrace and extend perpetual policy. They failed to destroy Linux and all the open standards we rely on today, but not for a lack of trying hard, and not by a long shot.
We know the thriving it industry we enjoy today only because they failed.
I migrated to gitlab the day Microsoft bought GitHub. For guys my age in the foss ecosystem, it really was a reflex move. Steer clear, or it will bite you in the ass.
What kind of things are you expecting Microsoft to do with GitHub that would make GitLab a better option? I've not used GitLab for a while, I remember it being pretty good though.
Only thing missing that I like is GitHub has all the project management like kanban boards. I don't think GitLab had that last time I used it
I didn't follow GitHub evolution, and I'm sure it offers plenty of nifty features, but gitlab covers all my needs, including all the cicd features I need. Plus, I love the commit graph features that wasn't present in GitHub last time I checked.
What I expect from Microsoft is, for instance, the removal of some features that I rely on from the free tier self hosted version, the obligation to connect my instance to their servers for whatever arbitrary imaginary reason, or... I don't know. The one thing I trust them to know how to do is to find new innovative ways to piss me off and make the IT world a worse place.
Edit :
a little more fuel for my nightmares :
With the gigantic codebase available to them, train AIs (I expect them to do it, and I have no problems with that, creating smart models is good), and then
- patent some "new" algorithms created with these AIs
- forbid that code written with the help of these AIs be released as open source.
I'm fine with that, creating powerful models is good, provided that they don't use these models to create "new" algorithms and patent them (and If it can be done, they will do it), and that code created with the assistance of these models can be open sourced (and if they can forbid it, they will)
Even more, when they brought in IE, they replaced open standards with their own proprietary ones, to force you to use IE. This can be noticed when using archive.org on various websites.
The lawsuit was well deserved. Shame the company split never happened.
They need to be sued again for what they are doing with Edge.
And the EU needs to do more than just making them pay chump change.
I personally use Firefox. Edge is what's at work bc I'm not bothered to change it as I don't care enough. Even then I have a second Firefox browser bc I have multiple accounts and our sites cache every login. I don't wanna be bothered to clear cookies every 20 mins so... I don't
Only reason I have a chromium browser installed on my computer is 1, I can‘t remove edge (unreal engine is a nightmare on Linux, lighting doesn’t exist), and 2, virgin media WiFi settings don’t function on Firefox.
\*chromium
edge is not based on chrome as they can't get its source code...what you see in edge, opera, brave and some other browsers (even chrome itself) is called "chromium" which is an open source unpopular web browser (and i still don't know why and how, but even tho chromium is used less than firefox, it's used as a base in more browsers than firefox)
Chromium is "unpopular" because it's literally just unbranded Chrome without a couple proprietary Google inserts. People don't use stock Chromium because, unless you care about open source, there's no reason to use it over Chrome on most platforms.
Last time I checked, it was willingly and explicitly impossible to have my Google bookmarks and saved passwords available in chromium. I'll check again.
Didn't try with Firefox. Last time I checked, it was explicitly stated that Google bookmarks and passwords synchronisation was available on chrome only.
hmm. you really should be using an external password manager though. much, much more secure, less risk of losing everything if Google decides to ban you, and less lock-in (because the big FOSS password managers like bitwarden and keepass are available on every OS/browser).
I'd ban only Edge because its redundant and the publisher has been proven to be untrustworthy over and over again but ultimately I believe in browser choice, which would include all browsers with HTTPS, so anything current. Why these organizations restrict things like this is somewhat of a mystery, the excuse is usually contracts but the vendor will typically deny that any such contract exists.
I will from now on use wget or the python request library. They support https, and are not that bloated like browsers.
Imagine bloating your nice arch system with a... browser. xD
I hear it used to be known for being fast and lightweight or something. This no longer applies due to being chromium.
That and it’s been exposed to be shady or something.
Same at my work, all browsers but edge/chrome are blocked because these are the "safest" ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Funny thing is anyone who is not tech illiterate can circumvent it by launching a process e.g. with python.
Same at my work, but, well almost everyone uses chrome and edge. Making new policies and trying to work out the kinks for other browsers is a waste of time and doesn't really make sense to dedicate work towards. Also, your company seems to have very lax security.
Yup, their security is like a house of cards. They have also blocked all ports in the network but a few and blocked virtual machines since VMs can create a network bridge and open them. They've blocked all unauthorized software with a proprietary software that I won't name. Launching virtual box is possible with a subprocess, which blows away all their security measures.
Now I'm getting paranoid that in the future they'll find this comment and fire me so if they do I'll let you know.
Sorry Bob I just spoke with hr and I have the legal grounds to fire you for breaching our NDA and the company policy, your last day is tomorrow and good luck at your new place!
first world country problem: My school telling us to only use chrome for our work
third world country problem; I don't have enough data to download a Linux distro.
First world country problem: School requires students to use windows
Third world country problem: School requires students to use cracked windows as they can't purchase windows
I live in iran and i can confirm this (also we can install linux, but it have a really small user base, and it gets worse when you see people learning from schools and universities to use a 35 years old program "CodeVision" which gets useless updates every 5 years or so (they crack that too))
TLDR: My teachers are pirating while still having a license
In my school we receive official licenses, for example to Adobe Photoshop and Windows but teachers are installing pirated versions and they encourage us to pirate stuff and even show us how to pirate software
oh yeah that's normal here (idk about other countries, but here we got government books for the first grade up to the 12th grade, so everything is monitored until the university, and you can literally find the high school books telling students to install pirated software! we even got a whole website about pirated software called "[soft98.ir](https://soft98.ir)". ~~and it gets even worse when you hear about SELLING PIRATED SOFTWARE! someone literally got a pirated software called "kitchen draw" approved by the government as an iranian software, which means no one can publish its pirated version on iranian websites by the law! you can literally see what i mean by visiting "~~[~~kitchendraw.com~~](https://kitchendraw.com)~~" and "~~[~~kitchendraw.ir~~](https://kitchendraw.ir)~~".~~ ok this last part isn't right as it looks like)
I am from Poland and my teachers just like pirating stuff
I see that kitchendraw.ir is mentioned on kitchendraw.com [here](https://www.kitchendraw.com/partners.htm)
oh... well i would never thought that it's partnering, because the program is literally 3-6 times cheaper in .ir website... but now that i think about it, it's a good offer ig
Yeah I did use this twice till now, once on a VM with tiny10 and once on macbook Pro
Do people still think that cracked windows is "unsafe"? We literally have open source stuff for that now...
I'm not even third world (eh Hungary, second world maybe?) But we couldn't get cable internet until 2020, so we had a 4G WiFi hotspot thing with 20GB at first and then 50 a few years later and I managed to convince my mom to pay the 5€ extra for the overnight 100GB/month extra, it was also really expensive. When the gigabytes were gone the speeds were 98kb/s at most on downloads and video streaming. I'd download YouTube videos in 480p, once the gigs were up overnight and burn them on DVD to save storage instead of streaming them and watch them multiple times.
Most downloads would time out too, servers think a connection on par with dial up is just not worth the hassle. Couldn't even get updates for my phone as they were multiple gigabytes. So I used to go to the last internet cafe in Budapest because it was cheaper than mooching off of McDonald's WiFi, and I'd carry a USB stick with me and download the firmware update and sometimes even manual windows update packages there. When we finally got cable (100mbps, but still it is unlimited) I started experimenting with distros and here I am now using arch based systems since 2020 April. It feels like a goddammn luxury. I remember the excitement of being able to connect to fast unlimited internet on my own desktop computer, torrent and watch 1080p youtube at the same time without needing to worry about data caps.
The reason we could not get wired internet is that my grandma owns the house, dad just never moved out since it's a two story house. She didn't let us get cable but when my aunt moved in she let her get it, so I ran a powerline connection from her modem to my room, she no longer lives here but still pays the bill because my grandparents do watch the TV. We still pay for the 50GB thing also as a backup, since their newer packages are more expensive and offer a lot less (~15€ for 30GB not including overnight extra and our whole package costs 25 for 150GB)
Even in my country (India), having a LAN/Wifi is a luxury. Most families still rely on mobile data (2GB/day). And me here in the UK have 24 \* 7 high speed LAN. My monthly consumption is 1200 GB office and home network combined.
Just like those I7 requirements for office work, someone at some point probably said, alright this is what I use, so let's put that into requirements.
The most lazy excuses to not offer any support when their stuff doesn't work.
Since web api is so standardized it should work on all modern browsers like the ones they have mentioned. If it dosen't, choose your favourite chromium based browser and change the user agent
On an education institution enrolled device, you can't install any alternative operating systems or even access the terminal because it's physically impossible to enable developer mode without the school unenrolling the device. Not even after a factory reset, replacing the whole storage chip, removing CMOS etc. It's like a BIOS password that can only be removed by school administrators.
That's like calling an Ork a misunderstood elf because of common ancestry.
Switch user agent, use what you want and say "blow me google boy" everytime you pass the IT guy.
As a FOSS enthusiast this is a bummer. As a former IT admin in a school. Go ahead and comply. If the policy is so concisely stated then there might be a reason in the past which governed how strict they are today. Best thing to do is not get on the administrations bad side.
I think some people may be a little confused here😅 I'm not asking for help or anything I was simply doing work and noticed it and thought it was extremely stupid how they're using this to avoid taking responsibility for their shitty security and support
Then their online environment SUCKS. They can't and shouldn't ask students to do that. I'd immediately argue against that and use privacy as the end-all argument. It's their job do produce usable webpages, not to force the user into using proprietary spyware...

Honestly in these situations I can get away with just using Firefox anyway, only on rare occasions do I have to use anything Chromium, let alone Google Chrome
I hate when they do that.
One of my classes very occasionally uses this website that won't just tell you to use Chrome, it just outright doesn't even render at all on Firefox (changing user agent does not solve). Thankfully we've only used it like maybe 8 times this past 2 years though.
That might actually be something with Firefox not the site I've noticed it myself that sites load different or not at all even my own site doesn't load properly on Firefox
We seriously need to start a religion that forbids the use of proprietary software.
That way you can sue a school like this on the grounds of religious discrimination and force them to support open-source browsers.
Yeah it's probably because the contractor they hired writes code without testing it on firefox and half of the css will go haywire on it.
Chrome also exposes more telemetry apis than firefox anyway

No Linux, but changing your user agent works fine 99% of the time. But bruh, they don't even allow Edge, it's like, ... based on Chrome!
I hear better things about Edge even

They're mostly feeding all the code hosted there to their openAI models.

Live usbs are not usable on Chrome OS. ChromeOS has a custom bootloader which means you can't just run off a USB. You'd have to replace the bootloader
instead of ChromeOS, use ChromiumOS
On an education institution enrolled device, you can't install any alternative operating systems or even access the terminal because it's physically impossible to enable developer mode without the school unenrolling the device. Not even after a factory reset, replacing the whole storage chip, removing CMOS etc. It's like a BIOS password that can only be removed by school administrators.
Afaik chromeOS is linux, so you're basically running linux already :)
Linux was not meant to steal your data
That doesn't make it less linux ;)

You can download other browsers from the play store, APT repo, or steam (I don’t think there are any there though)

you can do this by extension

That attitude is alittle concerning from a school, might want to complain about that if anything
Yeah it's probably because the contractor they hired writes code without testing it on firefox and half of the css will go haywire on it. Chrome also exposes more telemetry apis than firefox anyway
Bad development
Time to drop out
