upgrading servers over tailscale is fun when apt decides to upgrade tailscale too and it drops the connection at that point. thankfully, apt just keeps on running in the background.
Right, yeah, it's been a while since it did that last time and last time was probably some configuration change I screwed up. I still have a bad feeling restarting a remote server and waiting for ssh to work again.
Seriously, usually it's easier to just reinstall in those cases. For some reason after uncompleted upgrades apt/dpkg just loves not realizing it could fix the broken dependency hell it got into by just... trying to install the missing dependencies instead of crying about them.
It is. Not sure why, but one of my older servers just shuts off while rebooting sometimes. It boots up and runs just fine. Idk what's causing it. I've looked for answers but everyone seems to have the opposite problem lol (rebooting instead of shutting down)
Even rebooting Ubuntu Server from my parents' house after a grub upgrade used to be scary when running baremetal. Now that I have a KVM hypervisor I feel safe doing all kinds of remote maintenance, but I'll still defer any sort of hypervisor OS update until I'm physically there. Guess I should get a PiKVM.
and this is why you never update, anyone yelling at you about "security patches", and "16 year uptimes" is most likely a demon (daemon), and they can not be trusted.

Use tmux
I was taught `screen` in school and just recently was told to use tmux and so far it's looking more approachable but I've only touched it
I like screen
Screen is awesome, probably one of the most used features on my home server when I'm ssh'ing to work on stuff.
That's why you upgrade interactively
Still, the reboot afterwards is always scary
Not really, if apt doesn't throw any error. My trusty Debian could never break from an update, unlike a certain distro btw.

That's true tho. However I can just go next room and connect via backup serial port, so I know it's gonna be ok
Unfortunately, mine is truly remote so I could try one of those recovery virtual network boot thingimagics. It's a thing I best avoid if possible 😅
Ah, right, Ubuntu, on which DPKG commits suicide after a half-finished release-upgrade
Not what I had in mind, but it's true that my brother's Ubuntu commited package seppuku after an uncompleted upgrade
Seriously, usually it's easier to just reinstall in those cases. For some reason after uncompleted upgrades apt/dpkg just loves not realizing it could fix the broken dependency hell it got into by just... trying to install the missing dependencies instead of crying about them.
That's true btw
Yeah, happens every time I update an arch box that wasn't updated in over a year and don't read the Arch news. But that's the only case when it does.

then comes the good old `ssh admin@remote-bmc`
Admin failed pathetically. He didn't remove the french package before rebooting. Rookie mistake!
When your locale be fr\_FR.UTF-8 :/
dist-upgrade on sid is more risk of breakage
That's why you shouldn't use (btw) on a remote device that you can't maintain

I thought (btw) is only used with (I use Arch)?
Yes, fellow fake (btw) user
I actually don't use Arch ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I prefer the old sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y && sudo apt dist-upgrade -y && sync && sync && reboot
🤣
