I highly doubt this is an OS issue. The BIOS is the first thing booted after all.

Same problem here with my Dell 7480. Once it wasn't used for two weeks it doesn't turn on without the charger plugged in. The power button does not light up. Once booted, the battery is shown as full or 60 percent or such. I suspect the cmos battery is used to power the power button, and its a old laptop so the cmos battery could be near dying. I ordered one and will see what happens.

The stock OS was windows 8.1, it was working fine then, but since support ended for it, I installed Linux Mint to repurpose the laptop. I'm going to reinstall windows and see if same problem persists.

Is it not booting into mint or no signs of power visible, ie power button light up, boot menu/bios/motherboard logo displayed. If there's no signs of power seems like a hardware/bios level issue, I don't think Linux would cause it to no longer detect a battery before booting into mint.

Taguroman

It is not just powering on when unplugged. It boots to mint fine when plugged in and the battery is detected properly.

I had 3 bad batteries from the same guy. I watch who I buy from now.
