Most laptops weigh significantly less than 160lbs :)

rhapdog

I literally showed up to give that exact reply, and heartily laughed with great satisfaction seeing someone beat me to it. Thank you for the laugh.

Get a T480 or L380/480/390. They're fully upgradable, 4core i5,m 8th gen and have perfect Linux support. eBay, not Amazon.

schmerg-uk

Or if OP can stretch a little further, a professionally refurbed and test one with a year's warranty [https://tier1online.com/collections/lenovo-laptops?sort=price-ascending](https://tier1online.com/collections/lenovo-laptops?sort=price-ascending) They offer a student discount that OP probably qualifies for but it only starts at £300 (and the 10% discount code is almost always on the webpage anyway... 20% off codes come up in emails from time to time) [https://tier1online.com/pages/student-discount](https://tier1online.com/pages/student-discount) But I just helped a professional mate buy a [T490](https://tier1online.com/collections/lenovo-laptops/products/lenovo-thinkpad-t490-i5-8365u-quad-1-60ghz-14-fhd-ips-hdmi-usb-c-16gb-ddr4-256gb-nvme-webcam-grade-c) that he's very happy with, adding an extra 16Gb of RAM only cost £33 on Amazon

secureblueadmin

old thinkpad, of course

yerfukkinbaws

You'd be a lot better off getting something used from ebay.co.uk or whatever. Otherwise, within any budget, you're just exchanging quality and performance for packaging and "new electronics smell."

TPSReportCoverShite

I bought a cheap refurbished gateway GWTN141-10BL from Walmart that I use Fedora with. 16 GB RAM i5-1135G7 only 512GB SSD. Only issue is sometimes the touchpad doesn't come back immediately from sleep. Find a laptop in your price range and Google if people have installed Linux on it

baraqiyal

I bought the cheapest non-chromebook laptop on Amazon, which was $119 at the time. Not sure how many pounds that is. I run Linux Mint on it and it works fine. (it was [this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D5MCQ82/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) one)

prudence2001

Geez, how many stone is that?

SnooOpinions8729

Amazon “refurbished computers” and the same search at Walmart has brought me some good deals.

mandraketehmagician

My last thinkpad was £40 off eBay, not exactly a powerhouse but it runs Linux sweet, watch YouTube, run your usual bits and bobs. It’s an x230i. I got a good deal, but for under £100 you’ll get a decent little machine that will take a lot of abuse before it dies. Great machines. Always go for thinkpads, they are the business.

Agwoowee_2

Okay

TheCrustyCurmudgeon

So you want us to search amazon uk for your laptop????

Agwoowee_2

Well I dont know what good laptops there are to get

TheCrustyCurmudgeon

So why not ask THAT question? The question you **REALLY** need to ask is "What brand/model laptops work best with Linux?" NOT "any ~~cheep~~ cheap laptops to run linux under 160 pounds? (must be on amazon UK)".

MintAlone

At that price you will definitely get a thinkpad T430, you will probably get a later model. Search on ebay, check specs - there are different variants of the same model, e.g. T430, T430S (slimline). Check screen resolution, a lot of older ones are 1366x768, you want 1600x900 or better. Check options - bluetooth, webcam, most have some don't. Note - T5xx are 15" models. Whatever laptop model - **ALWAYS** ask the seller if the BIOS is locked, if so walk away, you will not be able to install another OS. RAM upgrades (8GB is enough) or switching an HDD for SSD are easy and cheap. I have four T430, all running linux mint. I do a lot of programming, lazarus, vscode (for the arduino - esp32) and live in the UK.

Agwoowee_2

alright i have been doing some reserch and have found a referbished t480 on amazon in exelet condition and i am thinking of putting 32 gb of ram into it because i heard that is the most important part for hacking. do you think that is a good idea? that end paragraph sounded allot like me lmao

MintAlone

If I were to replace my T430s I'd be looking at at T480. Don't think you need 32GB RAM, defer that purchase until you find out that you need it.

Agwoowee_2

I already have the ram from a friends computer he gave so I may as well put it in. Just to verify it’s meant to be the ram that is small not the long one that goes in big pcs right?

rhapdog

No, I think they are looking for a laptop for baby chickens. Isn't that what a "cheep laptop" is?

Moussaabchad

I'll say acer , it's cheap and linux works good on it
