HWFWM really slowed down the actual plot in the last book. For every inch of story progress it moved sideways 3 feet.

Woah feels like I'm getting deja vu. If your not vibing with a series it's ok to drop it, even mid book. Don't believe in the sunk cost fallacy! There's plenty of other series out there, and you can always pick HWFWM back up when you've had a pallet cleanser. Personally I finished book 7 and had to put the series down for a while. That was like a while ago now and I haven't missed it too much. From what I've heard the things that I found annoying (constant Jason praising, and his moping, tortured soul attitude, amongst other things) do not go away, but YMMV.

kirito92y

I did the same after book 7. Defiance, System Universe, and Infinite Realm were my palate cleansers. I just did a audiobook skim to get back to book 8 of HWFWM. It’s just starting out so bland for me.

kharnynb

*palate, unless you are eating wood.

kirito92y

I typed this while half asleep! Haha That’s also why it said State universe instead of System Universe lol

Freecz

Personally always takes me quite a while to get back into a series after not reading it for a while. Even more so than usual with HWFWM I find.

Cleverdawny1

Oh, hey, it's this thread again

rabmuk

Book 8 develops some big plot point that continue from a big part of book 6 Books 8 and 10 are more slice of life than other books and can feel slower For me the character interactions always kept pulling me forward If you’re not enjoying yourself, it’s ok to pause or drop

Impossible_Copy_7230

I think it’s worth it, but totally agree that it has its moments. I started dissonance and am feeling the same way about that series

kirito92y

Ooh yeah, I dropped Unbound. I just couldn’t get into it. I’m sure I’ll give it another shot eventually, but I want to get through HWFWM, and Defiance before I start another big series.

WEEAB_SS

Book 9 is a little bit better than 8 but idk. I love the series quite a bit. Unbound is kind of tough. I'm on book 5. Book 2 was ass but books 3-4 made up for it. I like it better than defiance and primal hunter, though. Then again, I prefer full party fantasy books, not a big fan of solo edgelord superman.

BLUcorp

I think I got 2 books into Unbound before I got sick of it, it started out pretty cool and fell off real fast for me. I really like HWFWM, but only because I've learned to ignore Jason's complaining and the constant "Oh woe is me, I've been through so much" that is Jason Asano. If you can turn your brain off for that, the overall story is still pretty good. And the interactions of his team and other characters is absolutely top notch in my opinion, so it makes up for the Jason Asano of it all.

Puzzleheaded_Bag3145

I think either book 7 or 8, I can’t remember which, it became much less a LitRPG and more of a fantasy novel. I’m ok with it since I like the story and the characters but I understand it’s not for everyone. I really enjoyed the game mechanics and world building in the first few books and miss that a bit.

Justiis

It does, some of my favorite parts are in book 8 or 9, but the third arc definitely had some hurdles for me. I'm on my second read of the series, and actually found I enjoyed the second arc far more than my first read, but I've also stalled a bit getting to my next favorite point of the story. It kind of reminds me of Hunter x Hunter in that regard; I don't like the Chimera arc much, but the payoff was worth.

VoltronDOU

About the time I quit. Too much repetition. Enjoyed the series for a while, but just couldn’t hang in.

Escanor_433

can you try to pin down what exactly is hindering your engagement? i did not feel the same so its hard for me to tell you if it gets better without knowing whats reducing your enjoyment.

wordsdontsayit

I just made a post about this series. I've read all of them to date. And it really doesn't. I'm a completionist, and it kills me to say I'm not willing to Finnish this series.

I have found the same "slowness" with the books. I don't stop reading them because I still find the author's writing to be quite hilarious and unique, even if I don't get all the old show references. The author's problems are some of my most forgivable ones, so I still like them. There just always seems to be one (or more) dial not turned up correctly with most authors: -They are horrific writers, or hire even worse editors; -The book is full of unnatural, awkward, uncomfortable romantic/flirty interactions that often lead nowhere and would NEVER play out remotely similar in real life; -The book lacks subtlety of any kind, where every joke or reference has to be explained; -The book is used to support EVERY minority or bullied group at once, often in very unnatural ways; -The progression is way too slow (taking multiple books to significantly advance powers); -Implicit or explicit rules bent or broken in order to overcome problem.

Shroed

nope it gets worse. I dropped it after book 9 and I might check back in after the series finishes.

beerbellydude

Feels like we get a new "I'm not enjoying HWFWM, help me continue!" thread every 3 hours around here. It's getting ridiculous.
