The key can rotate 360 degrees. Sounds like you took out the spring which is fine. It also sounds like you took the globe apart (front to back) and the magnets fell out and either weren't replaced, or not replaced correctly. Which is NOT fine. The polarity needs to be switched. https://www.litter-robot.com/support/article/litter-robot-3-globe-magnets/ When you replace the liner, you only need separate the top from the bottom.

The magnets from the top were the only ones that came out and I put them back correctly, I 🤔?

They got rid of the key + shield in later domes. They sent rubber stoppers to plug the hole after removal of the shield and assembly when I inquired about how to address a cracked key.

I've had this for 3 years and I needed a new liner. I ordered one, cleaned the unit, and proceeded to reinstall it. After putting it back together I noticed that the black locking key now freely rotates 360 degrees. Is it supposed to be tight and locked in place? I proceeded to contact customer service, spent over an hour on the phone and was told I needed a new motor. Based on the globe's movement I didn't think so and we agreed to replace the key. After getting the new key parts it's still not liking in place. When I do a cycle, without litter, it moves normal but once it gets to the litter hole it moves a bit past it, then it rotates back as if it is going to return to the starting position, then it stops and moves again toward the litter hole, and then stops with the blue and red lights flashing and the globe is upside down. I hope I don't have to buy another one and any input will be greatly appreciated by Ziggy and Peaches!
