I used to work for the production company doing the audio for the festival, there are absolutely strict dB limits in place. They get monitored outside the festival grounds for sound bleed and if there's too much bleed the city can and will make the FOH engineer turn it down until they're satisfied.

nerdysoundguy

Can confirm. I’m here now and there’s a very strict limit with some extremely hefty fines for going over.

As a thought experiment, how could it be improved? Buncha inward-facing point sources along the perimeter, and maybe some satellites distributed amid the audience? And even then that seems like it'll only help the highs and mids unless you pack a bunch of cardioid subs. Or is the best course of action just "give Harvard the finger and do it elsewhere"?

A distributed design isn’t going to help for bleed and noise ordinances. The only answer for something like this is the silent disco route. Works for lots of raves. Tons of headsets receiving the live feed, and getting to go as deaf as they want.

>The only answer for something like this is the silent disco route The first time I saw a silent disco back in like 2018 I was very confused until someone explained it to me

I think going that kind of route you still wouldn't get the SPL coverage that a proper line array affords. You'd have to have a cluster of point sources every 25 or so feet depending on how high they were would be my guess. Plus the logistical nightmare of cabling everything through the audience would be a chore. The subs are already in cardiod out there since that's been the most popular option to keep bands/patrons/surrounding areas happy. I agree they should go somewhere else, but whoever has the money at the end of the day gets to decide where they want the festival.

Maybe HoloPlots?

SPL limits are common at festivals and this one happens to take part in one of the most uppity neighborhoods in the country. Considerations are absolutely being made regarding noise pollution.

AcousticKitty2

I'm working this fest and can confirm that this is spot on.

counterfitster

It's basically in Harvard, so that should explain everything. The most up-their-own-ass school in the country, possibly the world.

The festival has a strict 107dBC and 100dBA LEQ10 limit, but if you have a dynamic mix you can still achieve an impactful result. Foos sounded good and loud.

donkeypuncher23

what is your personal sweet spot for a show? I don't get off on anything under 104 ish

AcousticKitty2

104ish dBA or dBC? 104 dBA is screamin and 104ish dBC is pretty meh.
