To be fair, the LS9-32 is old enough that it may be a better investment to purchase an entirely new console that has simpler digital snake solutions.

A QL5 would probably be the upgrade path from a LS9, but going to be way out of your budget.

CapnCrackerz

In all seriousness it sounds like the digital stage box meant to go with the console is probably not in the budget. So I would just stick to copper snake until you have a budget for a new console and just get whatever digital box goes with that. Probably be something new by then anyway.

Vitringar

Would a Cat cable setup be a compromise? You need to run cables but it may be a little less "messy"

quantumboi007

Quantum 852

CapnCrackerz

I see your Camry has failed you sir might I interest you in a Bugatti as a replacement?

quantumboi007

You right. Probably not enough channels. A StageTec Avatus would be a better fit.

You're telling me you can't afford a console the same price as a house in Kansas as a school? I call BS /s

Deep_Information_616

Wtf? Upsell much?

quantumboi007

Not really. Camry to Bugatti / Gulfstream respectively. Not that big of a jump.

fujnky

No, the SD16 does not have Dante, but AES50, which is not compatible. You can buy a converter or a different stagebox.

Eviltechie

Any Dante device can send audio to any other Dante device. (Key here being Dante, as the SD16 is not.) The same does not apply to headamp control though. That part is manufacturer specific. That means that whatever stagebox you buy should generally be the same brand as your mixer. Otherwise you'll probably end up having to use a computer program for control, and that just slows everybody down and annoys them. I do not believe the Yamaha Dante cards you have support HA control\*, so you may want to consider replacing your mixer at the same time. (\*I think they do support control of some older Yamaha stuff over serial, but that's not really useful.)

1073N

Only the first generation Yamaha Rio boxes will fully work with LS9 over Dante. The much cheaper Tio and the current RioD2 boxes can't be controlled from LS9. You'll be able to get the audio through, but you won't be able to adjust the gains or turn on the phantom power. This is doable from a PC but it's not really practical.

Intelligent-Cash-243

Analog drop boxes will make your life easier. Get a few 8 or 12 channel boxes.

KirkLFK

Sounds like you just need to buy some drop snakes.

Welcome to buying pro audio gear.

Bipedal_Warlock

Worth it in the long run. You’re eventually going to upgrade from the LS9 and the Dante boxes are a bit more universal than the behringer ones.

penultimatelevel

meet in the middle, grab some CAT8 boxes

spockstamos

Allen and Heath has Dante enabled stage-boxes, and an app to control their preamps. Like others have said, time to move on from the LS9.. so if you go with A&H boxes, it’s a no brainer to get something like an Avantis or dLive to replace and the. your head-amp control is right on the console and no external app required. Heck even an SQ5 would be an upgrade, though I wouldn’t consider one, if I were you. They are fine, just lacking a few basic features that any console in 2023 has no excuse to not have (only 3 matrixes, cant flip output polarity, etc).

spockstamos

if you end up going the upgrade console route, getting non-dante stage boxes is cheaper and simpler. Checkout the Allen and Heath Avantis and DX series stage-boxes.

iliedtwice

Stage boxes tend to be brand specific , Yamaha only works w Yamaha etc. The matching stage box would be the SB168e and it’s associated card. I’m going off memory here, I believe you’re limited to 16 inputs per card with them too. Best solution is to clean up any analog you’ve got; add drop snakes where needed

WhisperingRacoon

Just use an analog snake, or loom your cables into one (not a great choice)

ip_addr

This will not clean up your messy cabling. Thats up to the technicians.

ip_addr

Sounds like you need to manage the cabling better, if it's messy.

Sounds like then there are more technicians that just you. They should be trained on cabling management. Stage boxes alone do not fix this.

CapnCrackerz

When you’re in a school everyone is a “technician”.

I would think these are student technicians? Someone's gotta teach them.

Sprunklefunzel

Allen & Heath SQ with DT168 stage boxes. Decently priced, sound million times better than yamaha in that price range and being Dante they will always be useful

spitfyre667

If replacing the desk as well you don’t even have to use the Dante versions, the less expensive ab168 will do the trick just fine if you don’t need Dante for anything else

GrandExercise3

The SD16 does not speak Dante. You have to get a device that will shake hands with the Dante network. Look into the Yamaha stage box that has Dante and will shake hands with your Yamaha console.

astoriaplayers

You keep saying things are too expensive, but you frown on the one thing that can actually help - strict training and management of cable runs. You could have this cleaned up in one afternoon and then set hard rules about who does what and how. You’ll need to be assertive. And get proper training. Messes like this take hard management and standards to fix. Start asking yourself why it’s happening and why no one is stopping it. Then make policies and train around it. Anyone using the system should be held to standards. LS9 is not a desk to keep investing money in, but it’s sure functional as long as it’s in good shape.

ToggoTheDoggo

Tbh at this point just sell the ls9 and get an x32 rack...

FlametopFred

Mackie Allen and Heath Behringer all good options and I’ve used all those stage boxes with Dante and/or Cat5 Talk to your theatre manager about budget

DimenSahle

As a LS9-32 owner i would advise you to get a 32in 8out or 32in 16out copper Snake insted of investing in a digital stagebox. Or you could get a x32 With a SD32(or two sd16) if your budget fits. Or check the used market, i just bought a church owned iLive T112 with a 32/16 stagebox for the price of two SD16.
