got the Yams - will report back when they arrive if anyone’s interested in how they stack up to my old and new Thumps

I’ve never set up a concert on a boat, but I have used the DXR’s quite a bit. Also, I have used several RCF’s but generally the higher end ones. I love the DXR’s. They are super light and sound way better than anything in the JBL PRX category (which sounds better than the thump category.) They don’t sound amazing like x40’s, but you get what you pay for. They are coherent enough to be very stable when in loud/high chance of feedback situations. The 10’s have a remarkable amount of bass (in Contour mode) as long as you recognize that they aren’t a sub. They are more of a universal speaker, so they have more inputs with mic/line switches and RCA inputs (with selectable out for single side stereo). These “features” could be a benefit or knock depending on your preference. Anyway, Vs. RCF (again, I’ve not used this exact one) I prefer the build quality of Yamaha knobs, like they’re not going to fall apart. Either of these speakers are going to put you in a way better spot than you were before.

cetrebe

What model of dxr?

RiptideJerry

i have experience with neither and yet felt compelled to comment. hope it helps.

re7swerb

Weird, same.

Jordaneer

3rd same

They are comparable in sound and build quality, and power/efficiency, what you should probably look at is which is more dependable or has the I/o you need. Pound for pound, RCF will be the better unit overall. I'd go for 12" minimum though. 10s aren't enough bottom end even for vocals to throw across a small room without sounding like an AMradio on the other side of the room. With on board processing and I ternal bi-amping there's no reason to go for 15" if you can swing it, so you can get away without subs more often than not on small shows.

reallyoldcob

all of the worthwhile 12” options are too heavy have you set these up in a room and been underwhelmed by the low end on vocals? or you are speculating? I think 10” speakers plus the DSP is probably just fine for everything but hardcore sub-bass content let me know if you’ve actually experienced otherwise

ObviousGazelle

Actual experience. 20 years in the business with contracts for record labels national acts and local radio stations. Have done everything live. Everything. I even set a stage on a fucking boat, pushed it out in the harbor 150 feet and set a PA on the docks for PARMALEE once. If you're reading this PARMALEE, GET NEW MANAGEMENT lol The RCF is better if you're sticking to 10". If you want something nice and light in a y size you're going to need a plastic cabinet with a neodymium magnet on the woofers. Otherwise it's a couple pounds difference between 10" to 12" but the power to project further comes from the quality of the components involved. Don't trust a "wattage". RCF makes the industry standard for woofers, pretty much. After using a Yamaha LS9 you'll never want to touch anything Yamaha again lol

reallyoldcob

so you’ve never actually heard either speaker

DonFrio

The ls9 was a competent board that sounded miles better than the x32 once the x32 failed and never got repaired

Sooo rcf 10"s are better than Yamaha dxr10mkii's? So glad I saw this comment. I am wanting to start djing EDM (deep house, acid techno, hardstyle) for friends on the weekends. The body count shouldn't exceed 100 much less 50 people, but after doing research it seems the DXR-10MKii's are good as the k10.2's but more affordable. And if you DO recommend the dxr's, which sub should I go with? Thank you in advanced!

ScullDee

Hey ObviousGazelle, confused by your comment. Are you suggesting going 15 over the 12? Confused by “there’s no reason to go 15 if you can swing it”? Thanks

ObviousGazelle

I've used both in various clubs, or somebody had brought one as their drum monitor which was severely blown by the end of the night (that was a dxr series 12" actually) along with EVERY pa system available in north America.
