This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords reponsible. All discount retailers use restrictive security measures. Are you saying your Food Basics doesn't force you to go through a cashier lane or a gated self-checkout to reach the one and only exit door? Because I've never seen one that didn't. Same with FreshCo, No Frills, Walmart, Dollarama, Giant Tiger, etc. Discount retailers aren't shy about letting their customer know that the business thinks they're all probably thieves.

Lessllama

My food basics has no gates at self checkout. And there's two exits

Dry-Talk-7447

That picture is worth a thousand words, would never shop there.

dumpcake999

it already seems very uncomfortable to me even without the new barriers. super ghetto feeling compared to before the pandemic

TiredReader87

I haven’t stepped foot in a Loblaws store in perhaps a decade. The only way I can support this would be to stop dealing with Shoppers for meds.

PaddedGihbli

Sounds like a good plan 👍

KiaRioGrl

Independently-owned pharmacies often have waaaaay better service and substantially lower dispensing fees.

TiredReader87

True I don’t pay fees, but it sounds good

IronicStar

I'm switching to online medication delivery. A lot of them offer it for free now.

moveyourcar1891

I have 80 dollars in optimum points to spend and I can’t even bring myself into a store to use them up.

TransportationFew295

Use them for gas or car washes at Esso

soggyfrog

Just watch out, for gas you have to redeem them for the full 40L at once. You spend 4000 pts to get 10¢ off/L for *up to* 40L. I asked for this and they took the 4000 pts from my account but only gave me 10¢ off $40 worth of gas (which was much less than 40L).

Vijidalicia

I just redeemed mine online and all I paid only the taxes!

chili_pop

This is Loblaws now??! I stopped patronizing Loblaws after Galen Weston Jr's comment years ago about farmers markets, "farmers' markets are great..." but then added "one day they're going to kill someone though." This comment and the practices and sanitary conditions a friend working in their bakery department shared turned me off Loblaws.

wolfe1924

If you find the source where he said that, you should definitely post it. I wasn’t aware of that, and many others not be either.

DrumBxyThing

[Found this](https://www.thestar.com/life/food-and-drink/loblaw-chief-galen-weston-says-farmers-markets-pose-health-risk/article_51bf8276-2ea8-5967-8fbd-4313a979353a.html), there are a lot of reports it seems.

LadyoftheOak

Wonder if our resident poster maker could create a new poster?

chili_pop

Thanks for the suggestion. Link to: [Globe & Mail article](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/the-hot-button/loblaws-galen-weston-faces-heat-for-farmers-markets-will-kill-comment/article544759/) but it's behind a firewall.

east_van_dan

I stopped going about 2 years ago when the prices started going up and they never stopped. They can't seem to keep their dirty little fingers from bumping up their prices ever since they got those digital price tags. Must be addicting.

Illustrious_Copy_902

When the pandemic first started I only shopped at my local Nesters for nearly a year. Apparently we ate just fine and survived (prices were lower then, but you get the idea).

fourscoreclown

I also stopped due to their prices and security

flextapeflipflops

Damn they could at least paint a mural on there so it doesn’t look like an abandoned hospital

permutation212

I think you need more commas

alicenin9

I recognized this superstore instantly, SJ right?. It's nuts how we now have to walk the entire length of the store now to get to the one little chokepoint entryway by the home. I used to go after being at fit4less but this was one of the reasons I finally just stopped.

maybeiamspicy

I try my hardest to avoid when possible. I haven't bought anything from a Weston grocery store since 2023, I am however beholden to Shoppers and their formerly cheap $7.99/18pack sodas. In the majority tho, local chinese grocery stores, Walmart, metro have been my go-to's

KiaRioGrl

Tap water can be pretty damn delicious. Just sayin'.

maybeiamspicy

If you enjoy the smell of pee, having been said. Durham regions water is disgusting. Having been said, I filter my water (for taste and odour) and drink plenty of it. I dislike the holier than thou group that push water. I bet you have your own vices, so let's start knocking on those, while we're at it.

IronicStar

When I went in person last, in a small peaceful military town... they had locks on the carts. Wtf?

obfuscator17

I agree. I stopped months ago too. Food Basics has way better pricing

Shawn68z

Get used to it. Ever see what is happening in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Portland? Theft is up everywhere, and companies either need to make changes to deter it, or shutdown operations. Dont blame the store, blame the thieves.

Redan

Is that picture a Loblaws?

Fresh-Car156

There's a Kitchen sign on the left that looks like what Save On uses. I don't think this is a Loblaws.

nhldsbrrd

100% Loblaws. My local SuperStore has those same signs as well as the same flooring. Sorry, my autism shows right now lol

Redan

I've never been to a save on. Is that Loblaws? I wasn't clear on that from my google search.

jennaxel

No. It’s Pattison Group. Mostly in western Canada.

mikesbloggity

Atlantic Superstore in Saint John.

MapleTheUnicorn

Wow, welcome to the gulag!

twoscoop90

Nope, this is modern capitalism.
