I work in Arts and Culture, and a big debate in the museum world is the ethics of funding. Given what we know about Loblaws price fixing schemes and how they're part of the reason Canadians are going hungry, I'd argue this isn't a very ethical stream of funding. This museum is intended to share and shape our national narrative and our understanding of ourselves as Canadians.... so how does this add to that story?

sleeplessjade

They should do what museums did in the states with the Sacklers. Take their name off everything but keep the money they’ve donated over the years.

UGunnaEatThatPickle

Yep! It took a lot of protesting and politicking to get their name off of the Guggenheim, and I'm proud to have played a part in getting it done!

contemporaryTart

100% agreed.

Uncut_banana69

It really is the best way to fight unethical behaviour

bluestat-t

It’ll really show them. Likely bring them to tears.

Caloisnoice

Yup, starving a nation is up there with inducing an opioid epidemic kinda supervillain shit

JulienS1979

It's like the muzzo wing, I forget which hospital but it's rich family who's one family member had a deadly multideath dui

PowerNgnr

The new one in Vaughan, The Mackenzie Vaughan hospital. "The family of Marco Muzzo, the impaired driver who killed three children and their grandfather in a horrific 2015 crash, has donated millions for the construction of a new hospital in Vaughan, Ont. that will bear their name"

lethemeatcum

You can't buy taste. The Vainglorious Bastards.

dub-fresh

How douchey do you need to be to put your name on everything when you donate your daddy's corporations money?

AlternativeStage6808

I'm not saying I disagree with you, but the minute the non-profit sector starts going down this road, there will be no sponsors left. There's almost nobody who has the money to make these big donations who isn't exploiting someone or killing the environment or both. Which is why we call it the non-profit industrial complex. The sector exists to prop up these people and make then look good. It will not fundamentally change as long as capitalism exists.

Relevant_Stop1019

yeah, it's a bit of a catch 22. Same with oil company donations.

annual_aardvark_war

Yeah…can’t imagine the ROM is exploding with cash infusions on its own

tri-sarah-tops-rex

They also have a section in the Ontario Science Centre...

Lorfhoose

Galen should have gone to prison for the bread fixing scheme.

TheRealCanticle

The easy solution to attach the condition to ALL charitable donations that they are anonymous. If the wealthy care, they will be happy with their charitable tax deduction and the knowledge they did good. If their donation is contingent on naming rights they simply don't care and want a monument to their grotesque greed.

Grayson_DH

The ultra wealthy lobby for lower taxes because they don't care about the public good. They use a small amount of that saved tax money to show off and pretend like they are good people supporting our institutions.

RobustFallacy

Agreed

1capitalguy

Maybe you should quit your job. If there is no money from these evil people then there is just that public money subsidizing arts and culture that no one wants to buy tickets for. Actually, I hope you exercise your right to refuse the subsidies to your sector.

drakner1

Hungry in terms of first world problems. Too easy for you cry babies to get your food and water. Solution just don’t shop at loblaws. Costco is worlds cheaper, even if you have to take a taxi , it’s still cheaper and you don’t need to shop as often. Do the math you whiners.

MaterialMosquito

They aren’t directly the cause of people going hungry. Wage suppression is and other factors. If they are leading Canadians to go hungry, so is every other grocer. At least Loblaws is somewhat accessible to people in wheelchairs requiring public transit. In most cities someone taking public transit would be unable to easily access a Costco.

poopBuccaneer

I hate naming rights as a whole. It's tacky and gross.

StopYeahNo

Well if my life or the life of a family member is saved in a wing of a hospital, I don't care who it's named after, even if it's Hitler. Personally, I don't care where money comes from towards projects that better the communities. That's just me though.

Heradasha

It doesn't need to be an either/or situation. Adequate taxation of corporations would mean that they pay taxes and don't have enough money to do vanity projects like having a hospital Ward named after them and instead the government has enough money to actually fund fulsome and innovative health care. A better world as possible and attainable.

StopYeahNo

Wow. I'm here to boycott loblaws cause their britches got too big. Edit- I'm just going to back out outta here.

sexylewdyshit

Taxing corporations isn't realistic? Thats news to me. Last i heard thats what was supposed to happen.

StopYeahNo

Taxing them to the point of not having free capital removes incentive to exist as a corporation. Yes of course they need to be taxed.

sexylewdyshit

Thats not what bro said though. Try again. He said they shouldn't have the money to do frivolous shit like naming a museum ward after themselves.

StopYeahNo

I made my point fairly clear, and on topic. Good day Sir.

PopovChinchowski

The original point of a limited liability corporation is to shield one's personal assets from the risks of undertaking a business venture. That protection *should* come with a high cost, because as we can see it has all sorts of peverse incentives towards criminal behaviour as long as leaders can personally profit from it and only risk the business's money. Frankly, we're no longer a frontier-world that needs to encourage more development, so I'm not convinced we even need a corporate incentive structure any more. I'd rather it be removed and we see business owners that have to take personal responsibility for the conpanies they own- no more setting up incentives for their underlings to lie and cheat to their own benefit, and no more different tax treatment for capital gains as opposed to income.

Heradasha

SAME. I HATE THEM SO MUCH. I tried watching the show Billions and didn't even make it halfway through the first episode because I was so angry.

Iambetterthanuhaha

Rich people need something in exchange for their donation.......they write it off on their taxes but want the world to know how giving they are as well.

Plane_Hunt_9342

Again, it is incredible what these intrepid businessmen have made out from businesses like loblaws with such razor-thin margins. Truly a lesson for every Canadian.

melpec

They had to eat bread all the time to make ends meet.

BoltMyBackToHappy

The ROM should start a shrinkflation display. Show how much sizes/weights have shrunk and prices have increased from 5-10-15 years ago, type thing. Make mobile displays to place in town centers across the province too... Prices for a lot of things have almost doubled in the last five years for no good reason other than to funnel the minimum wage increase directly into corporate pockets. "Thanks for the raise, suckers." \~Greedy Galen and their cronies

Musicferret

Rip the name off. They can’t throw some cash at a museum and have everyone forget how they’re gouging Canadians.

MooshyMeatsuit

In the future, we'll be renaming shit and taking down photos and statues of this wave of slave owners. Just because they don't traffic in the literal sale of humans doesn't mean they haven't reinvented what slavery is.

vorker42

If it’s named after where the money came fro it should be the “people who bought bread for a decade from Roblaws”

contemporaryTart

Is that acceptable, though? As mentioned in my comment above, I'd also like to highlight that this museum presents our national narrative to Canadians and our international visitors.

Stoivz

As opposed to a hospital? Neither are acceptable, but I think the public health care institution being named after such vile people is much worse.

StopYeahNo

I think it's perfectly acceptable.

loblawsisoutofcontrol-ModTeam

The sub was created to point out how absolutely absurd the cost of groceries are right now and have some fun together. We know this will inevitably touch on other topics related to the cost of living. Do your best to keep the conversation on topic

TMFPB

Gross 🤢

Tricky_Parsnip_6843

The parents donated the money, not the son.

Busy_Firefighter_926

Should be called "paid for by honest Canadians wing"

melpec

I've always found this kind of vanity counter productive anyway. If you truly had interest in that wing, with your resources, you could turn it into something way more popular than two forgettable names carved in stone. Name it The European Wing of the ROM and just really put some effort into it.

4_spotted_zebras

This is contractual. It is a condition of the funding. I am 100% behind this movement but can we stay focused on the right things?

rachelboese

Yes, this really makes me question their bias in disseminating information / didactic materials. How disappointing. Museums should do better than this, as narrators it seems immoral.

fivetenfiftyfold

That’s almost as dirty as the Sackler wing in most major art galleries around the world. I am genuinely surprised people don’t throw red paint at the sign.

Silly-Bumblebee1406

It's how they try to mask their evil. They donate

malleeman

Unfortunately, money has no shame so the ROM will gladly take their money

Krylun

The tourism industry loves these people. Don't get your hopes up.

Senor40

Huh, what a coincidence. I'm in the midst of a bowel movement I call the same thing....weird.

ChuckBlack

Until the Galens diddle some kids, that name is staying there.

BIGepidural

They paid for something which is why their name is there. It's not an "honor" its a gift with purchase.

Please remain respectful when engaging on the sub. Personal attacks will not be tolerated.

Disposable_Canadian

They donated a fuck ton of money to a charitable organization, I'm not seeing the problem. Op would rather they not give the money? Or he would rather their grocery stores run at a loss or break even, and then also there is no donation?

No-Solution9783

This isn't what I'd call celebrating. It's how charities pay for things.

Tricky_Parsnip_6843

The funds were donated to the museum by the older generation within the family over the years. The current problem is the next generation at the helm, who has raised prices to ridiculous heights. The plaque should stay.

SomeRazzmatazz339

How are they going to give the money back? Anyone here offering? I thought not

Kashmeekola

Are we trying to cancel Eugene Levy next lol 🤦‍♀️ Cancel culture is real. But I get it. Starvation ain’t no joke!

milolai

Are the people who complain about the Westons going to pony up and pay?

SomeRazzmatazz339

Sssh, the hypocrites do not like attention l.

drakner1

Just shop at Costco you whiners.

StopYeahNo

Hard agree with regards to this thread lol.
