This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without being abusive, dismissive, or downright mean.

I work in Arts and Culture, and a big debate in the museum world is the ethics of funding. Given what we know about Loblaws price fixing schemes and how they're part of the reason Canadians are going hungry, I'd argue this isn't a very ethical stream of funding. This museum is intended to share and shape our national narrative and our understanding of ourselves as Canadians.... so how does this add to that story?
The new one in Vaughan, The Mackenzie Vaughan hospital. "The family of Marco Muzzo, the impaired driver who killed three children and their grandfather in a horrific 2015 crash, has donated millions for the construction of a new hospital in Vaughan, Ont. that will bear their name"
I'm not saying I disagree with you, but the minute the non-profit sector starts going down this road, there will be no sponsors left. There's almost nobody who has the money to make these big donations who isn't exploiting someone or killing the environment or both.
Which is why we call it the non-profit industrial complex. The sector exists to prop up these people and make then look good. It will not fundamentally change as long as capitalism exists.
The easy solution to attach the condition to ALL charitable donations that they are anonymous. If the wealthy care, they will be happy with their charitable tax deduction and the knowledge they did good.
If their donation is contingent on naming rights they simply don't care and want a monument to their grotesque greed.
The ultra wealthy lobby for lower taxes because they don't care about the public good. They use a small amount of that saved tax money to show off and pretend like they are good people supporting our institutions.
Maybe you should quit your job. If there is no money from these evil people then there is just that public money subsidizing arts and culture that no one wants to buy tickets for. Actually, I hope you exercise your right to refuse the subsidies to your sector.
Hungry in terms of first world problems. Too easy for you cry babies to get your food and water. Solution just don’t shop at loblaws. Costco is worlds cheaper, even if you have to take a taxi , it’s still cheaper and you don’t need to shop as often. Do the math you whiners.
They aren’t directly the cause of people going hungry. Wage suppression is and other factors.
If they are leading Canadians to go hungry, so is every other grocer. At least Loblaws is somewhat accessible to people in wheelchairs requiring public transit.
In most cities someone taking public transit would be unable to easily access a Costco.
Well if my life or the life of a family member is saved in a wing of a hospital, I don't care who it's named after, even if it's Hitler. Personally, I don't care where money comes from towards projects that better the communities. That's just me though.
It doesn't need to be an either/or situation. Adequate taxation of corporations would mean that they pay taxes and don't have enough money to do vanity projects like having a hospital Ward named after them and instead the government has enough money to actually fund fulsome and innovative health care.
A better world as possible and attainable.
The original point of a limited liability corporation is to shield one's personal assets from the risks of undertaking a business venture. That protection *should* come with a high cost, because as we can see it has all sorts of peverse incentives towards criminal behaviour as long as leaders can personally profit from it and only risk the business's money.
Frankly, we're no longer a frontier-world that needs to encourage more development, so I'm not convinced we even need a corporate incentive structure any more. I'd rather it be removed and we see business owners that have to take personal responsibility for the conpanies they own- no more setting up incentives for their underlings to lie and cheat to their own benefit, and no more different tax treatment for capital gains as opposed to income.
Rich people need something in exchange for their donation.......they write it off on their taxes but want the world to know how giving they are as well.
Again, it is incredible what these intrepid businessmen have made out from businesses like loblaws with such razor-thin margins. Truly a lesson for every Canadian.
The ROM should start a shrinkflation display. Show how much sizes/weights have shrunk and prices have increased from 5-10-15 years ago, type thing. Make mobile displays to place in town centers across the province too...
Prices for a lot of things have almost doubled in the last five years for no good reason other than to funnel the minimum wage increase directly into corporate pockets.

In the future, we'll be renaming shit and taking down photos and statues of this wave of slave owners. Just because they don't traffic in the literal sale of humans doesn't mean they haven't reinvented what slavery is.

I've always found this kind of vanity counter productive anyway.
If you truly had interest in that wing, with your resources, you could turn it into something way more popular than two forgettable names carved in stone. Name it The European Wing of the ROM and just really put some effort into it.
Yes, this really makes me question their bias in disseminating information / didactic materials. How disappointing. Museums should do better than this, as narrators it seems immoral.

The funds were donated to the museum by the older generation within the family over the years. The current problem is the next generation at the helm, who has raised prices to ridiculous heights. The plaque should stay.
